Fernando Torres to Liverpool is a Thing People are Talking About

By: Ed | December 13th, 2011

fernandotorres

Like so much surrounding Fernando Torres in the past eighteen months, the sudden Twitter explosion about his possible return to Liverpool doesn’t make much sense. A seemingly baseless rumor about his current club’s willingness to sell for £30million less than he was purchased for eleven months ago, and all of a sudden there’s legitimate-seeming people having legitimate-seeming conversations about the likelihood that Liverpool would make a move for him. Proving that, once and for all, we need to stop drinking so much.

It was sort of a strange thing that happened once the Daily Mail reported that Chelsea would be willing to sell Torres in the January window, in that everyone apparently forgot that other clubs exist. It wasn’t just that Chelsea might be thinking about considering the idea of an opium dream that Neil Ashton had, it was that Fernando Torres was leaving London and he had to be coming back to Liverpool because he never really stopped loving them and how good would he be with Luis Suarez and does anyone know how to get burn marks off of ClimaCool?

Which isn’t meant to entirely trivialize the sentiment that comes along with the idea of Torres back in a Liverpool shirt, because even the most butthurt of us has to acknowledge that the love affair between player and club was something special. Hindsight can trick us into believing that it was never that great, but myriad YouTube compilations, public proclamations of undying love, and the four jerseys you have stuffed in a bin in the closet tell us otherwise.

torreschelseaWe can probably all acknowledge that there’s a fair bit of romanticism involved here, and that as pejorative and condescending as we’d all like to be, there’s a flicker in all of us when the topic comes up that’s informed by past glories and endless what if’s. If only he’d stayed, his partnership with Suarez would be unbeatable. He’d never be struggling the way he is now, lifted by the unconditional love of supporters and a natural mentor in Kenny Dalglish. And obviously Steven Gerrard’s groin dong would be in pristine condition, buoyed by their magical link-up on a regular basis. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

There’s really no reason for any of this to have traction other than the romance and the memories, though, and I’m not so sure that’s good enough justification to go after anyone. The desire for a once-loved player to return makes sense emotionally, but in the real world, it doesn’t do anything for the club’s current troubles. Sentiment doesn’t convert chances, even as much as we’d like to believe it.

One of the other main talking points to emerge since Neil Ashton and most of the Twitterverse experimented with mescaline is the idea that, at £20million, there’s some sort of juking the stats to be done. All of a sudden bust of the century Andy Carroll only cost £5million, and we can retroactively explain why Liverpool spent so much money on the former Newcastle striker. Which is not really the most flattering argument for Liverpool or Carroll, who’s not yet had the chance to rid himself of the fact that people with lots of money decided to spend some of it on him.

What a terrifically awful idea—purchase a player you sold who’s scored fewer goals than the player you bought with the money earned from the player you sold to try to prove a point that the player you bought wasn’t worth that much. Uh-huh.

So to seriously argue that coming back to Liverpool is the best thing for the club or for Fernando Torres, or just because I could lift the ban on my wife wearing that jersey she really likes, is misguided at best. It’s emotionally appealing but ultimately unfulfilling, as the joy we experienced during his first stint at the club—and even the glee we felt as Daniel Agger delivered a Danish special to his jaw—can’t be taken back or duplicated. Both are painful in retrospect, but I doubt we’d take either of those things back.

In the end, Chelsea will probably end up selling Fernando Torres, whether it’s this coming January, next summer, or five years from now. He could find his way back to the starting eleven for them and hit the goalscoring trail, or continue to languish in obscurity and find himself subject to ongoing rumors about discontent and failed potential. And if by some otherwordly influence they end up selling to Liverpool, there’ll be a healthy amount of dissonance we’ll have to deal with.

For now, though, we can chalk it up to bullshit and romance. At least before we slink off to YouTube.

Let me just wake you from your dream and bring you back to earth. Let's look at facts from this chrstmas cracker as it was.

    1. Yes Chrstmas is 10 days away nd a wonderful time for kids to write to Santa for that special gift

    2. Unfortunately Santa doesn't exist and we know it's the Parents who have to pay for that cherishegift

    3. Unfortunately for You that whilst your Parents have money there
are a lot of other parents out there with bigger wallets all keen to buy
that present for their kids. PSG, Malaga, City and Anzi to name but a few.

    4. The person looking to sell this toy would rather sell to anyone other than your parents for less money !!
    5. The reality is even the toy would look for new parents.

    6. Dad considers the present to be so last year that he has other ideas.

As previously stated Santa doesn't exist so there ends the xmas  dream !

  • screw torres, i want alonso back...

  • Ryan

Damn, watching his early goals for Liverpool...he was so ruthless. Footballers are funny, how they just forget how to do things.

  • Kevin

You've all lost the plot completely. It's like your bird running off with another geezer because he's got a flash moter, 1 year down the line realising that there's no love between them, coming back with her tail between her legs and you, like a divvy, taking her back with open arms. Actually applauding her for doing it. The fact remains he disrespected the club. He handed in a transfer request on the last 48 hrs of a transfer window to force through a move to a bunch of tories down in London. He did it at a time when we'd just ousted those American louts and reinstalled Kenny. F##k fernando torres. He doesn't deserve the prestige of wearing our shirt. He's gone and he's forgotten in my eyes and the next time I see him at Anfield I hope he's getting splinters in his a##e on the away subs bench whilst watching us play some super football.

  • Latortillablanca

i also think that remembering his greatest goals in a red shirt is fine, but is separate from the above sentiment, which is spot on from where i'm sat...

  • Ashfah Hussain

Take him back. We did the same thg to Ian Rush.

  • MikeyC

If he comes back, does Carroll have to surrender the number 9 jersey?

  • Lis

Hmm, at liverpoolfc.tv they uploaded an adorable video of kids auditioning to become a LFCTV presenter and one of the comments is this: "Get Torres Back Get Torres back the campaign has started everyone who is with me say it!"
    The madness has indeed started.

  • Geoff Twentyman

    Final word:

If Chelsea are willing to sell &
If the price is right for LFC &
If Nando wants to return &
If Kenny wants him back &
If Kenny thinks he can get him firing again......

....then all our hot air don't mean a thing and it will happen.

The likelihood is that this rumour is exactly that - a rumour; a bunch of old fart and as such, it won't happen.

  • Ryan

Wow, a man can't sleep around these parts without a explosion of posts!

    My take of the cake:

Even me, myself, I, say "we don't want him back" when really in my mind, I want him back. I've been a big fan of Spain and Liverpool for a few years, so ya, I'm emotionally attached to the guy. BUUUUUUUT. that's why we fans don't make the decisions, and hopefully, if there is any truth to this rumour, there's someone sitting behind a desk who gets paid good money to make good decisions for Liverpool without bias or emotions coming into play.

So hip hip hurray to Emotionless Moses!! The smart sunofabitch who got us 62 million off these heartless selfish scumbags. Torres costed 20mil coming in, and brought in 50mil. take out the Carroll fee, and we got 70 goals for 5 million! Have a drink, Em. Moses.

  • binhamis the great

that why god create forgiveness wat we have to do is take back our men and bless him ,forgive him and let him play with suarez.fernando he made mistake and he need to be forgiven so plz king kenny take him in,remember gerrad is on his way back to the squad so it will be fantastic though it will not be a problem coz nando have alot experience with the club.thereby to leave nando mr kenny is like to bear a child an throw him to the sea.welcome welcome welcome back nando this is your second coming like robie flower did you forget kenny ? am out

  • Suarez from the car park...

Robie Flower was a sensational player, must be said...

  • redtrev73

Aaaaaaand the comments roll past 100...again. Seems a few people read your stuff, Ed and Noel.

  • Ed

If this isn't going to turn the comment section into Thunderdome, nothing will. Good stuff all around, as usual.

  • Sheldon Whittaker

I say bring back Torres and let Carroll go the other way. Carroll does not fit in the Liverpool team

  • Latortillablanca

i dunno what all the fuss is about - not only are the numbers ridiculous, but if our main problem is goals, why go for the only guy in the world who's goals per dollar rate is more expensive than carroll????

gimme a break... torres is finished, at least andy's gonna get better...

  • Steviemccann84

If he does leave Chelsea he'll probably end up back at Atletico Madrid or in newly rich Malaga. Don't think Liverpool or the fans would take him back and can't see Barca or Real signing him.

  • 5x

fck torres lets him rot on chelseas bench thats were the ladt boy deserves to be with terry doing his mrs in his bed.

  • heitz11

That youtube shows what torres was excellent at: finishing. What have we struggled with most this season? Suarez creates all the havoc and then there is no one to finish.

  • Latortillablanca

WAS excellent at, as in no longer any good at.

  • Geoff Twentyman

And could be again if all of trhe physical attributes are in place - its then a case of the system and the pyschology - mending whats wrong with a player is the cheapest way of getting a bargain.

There is the doubt that he has the same pace as well, which truly affects a striker like him as the extra touch is no longer viable and as such, no chance to create that extra space to unleash a shot.

I can't tell whether thats true and if it is the case, then I'm with the 'no thanks' crew...

  • Latortillablanca

The torres from the above clip hasn't been seen in a Red, Blue or Spanish Armada shirt in over 2 years.  It happens quite often in football.  The physical tole robbed him of his first step and the money (and successes with Spain) robbed him of his hunger.  the guy will prolly always be an above average player, but THAT fernando torres is long gone...

im not hatin on the torres that gave his all for the club, he was great and pretty high up on the man crush list, but that's all dead and buried now.

  • kenny

How much did Van Persie cost the Gunners? 2.something million? Now he has more goals than all of Torres, Aguero, and Suarez... who are 100million something. Maybe we just don't buy expensive

  • Red2death

We tried buying cheap before.  Under H&G.  It got us to up to 2nd.  But certainly not because of the cheap buys.  If Rafa had actual money to spend, it'd be Liverpool's #19, not Utd's.

  • Ryan

There were also some rather expensive purchases that we are all rather Keane to forget...good times huh?

  • ejbauer11

I can't watch those youtube goal compilation links. I felt sick when I read the headline and then I'm ashamed to admit I almost teared up thinking about him leaving in the first place, which is healthy and sane, obviously.
I see where Anne is coming from in her post, but disagree: what was wrong about Torres leaving was that the new owners were addressing his professed reason for leaving, namely, lack of ambition. He could've f'ing waited until the summer, and could've f'ing not gone to f'ing chelsea. Whatever. I still derive a sick satisfaction from watching him languish on the bench. I'm not saying I wouldn't cheer if he were in the starting XI w/ Luis, though. And I do f'ing love the torres song...and that picture w/ him wearing the f'ing YNWA armband while at atletico...sigh.But much like the girl/boy you almost but don't end up marrying, it's over. I'm not gonna hate him (b/c it's too much effort) and will be polite, but it's a waste of time thinking about times past, even if some of the times were delirious.

  • CheekyFellow

I can't watch them because of the music

  • ejbauer11

    Hah - too right.

  • Mult bill

surely liverpool should bring back Torres back to Anfield

  • poorscouserbobby

Well children, have a seat at my feet whilst I pontificate on the pondering about the wandering boy who could have been king.
    1)  While I was angry, and betrayed that El Nino left for what seemed to be only money.  Realistically he wants to win, loves to win and thought Chelsea would help him win.  I enjoyed far more watching him score than take a D.Aggers elbow to the face.
    2) He looked better in Red.
    3) If Nando comes back I can go back to actually calling my Dog Nando Calrissian the Magnificent.
    4) He could be what we lack.  Carroll has time to develop, not a huge weight on his shoulders.   Perhaps with the Bull, The pistoleer, and The Boy we would finally start to run riot on the QPR's of the world.  It seems Chelsea don't give him service he needs, but we can't get the finishing we need, but lots of chances... just sayin'.
    5) How many players have left Liverpool only to return? Rush, Fowler, Bellamy, Souness.  How many others?
    6) how many of you would forgive the man for leaving, for following boyish fantasies the moment he scored that first goal?  To hear FERNANDO TORRES LIVERPOOL'S NUMBER 9!!!!!
Conclusion:  I do not think Fernando Torres will ever return to Liverpool.  I do not think Roman would allow him to be sold to another Premier League club.  If he were to return, humble and work hard to getting back to the striker who filled us with such joy and passion... I'd take him.  I'd take him in a heartbeat.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Tell me you don't want this man back.

  • Geoff Twentyman

"3) If Nando comes back I can go back to actually calling my Dog Nando Calrissian the Magnificent."

I little bit of wee escaped into my trousers when I read this line....

  • redtrev73

Bobby....I don't want this man back.

    Also...BEST. DOG-NAME. EVER.

  • poorscouserbobby

Watch the video, tell me you don't want that man back.

Of course it's the best dog name ever.. That's my little sister, all 5 foot 10 of her being crushed by NCtM... .

  • redtrev73

Watched the video, bobby. I still don't want this man back. (I would like to go back in a time machine to the days when he was the best on the planet and wearing a Liverbird on his chest, beam THAT guy aboard and dump him stunned and confused on the melwod training pitches on Thursday morning...but that, I'm told by my wife, is unlikely)

That is a frighteningly massive and simultaneously adorable dog/horse that's crushing your sis. Do you charge peole to ride him?.....coz you should....

  • Lis

At least he looks remorseful about it. And is all fluffy and cuddly.

  • Suarez from the car park...

I'd rather have Benitez back.  His priority was pace, which is what teams struggle against, and which is what we're missing.

He would attract star players and with a healthy budget we would buy far better than we do now.

FSG unfortunately might be an obstacle.  I reckon they might have told Broughton to get rid of Rafa before the deal was to happen.

  • Mcadb

This rumor is total twaddle.  He left LFC with no options on the last day of the transfer window and has now followed with disgusting act with what he deserved, his worst season ever.  He has no quality in front of goal and LFC needs to look to the future not the past!  Time to start developing young diamonds in the rough, not old broken has-been's.  Now can we all stop talking about this utter rubbish and get back to reality please...

  • Ed

  • Is your refrigerator running?

My wife also liked his hair. The blonde highlighted version. So...see you at Anfield, Nando? I guess?

  • Anne

There was NOTHING wrong in what Torres did - NOTHING at all. And, in fact, we may not know the full story behind his departure for a while. Rush left Liverpool, so did Souness, and so have millions of other professionals, not only footballers, to enrich themselves in one way or another, and so, why not Torres ?

Clubs are run like private companies, and sooner we, the supporters, get that in our minds, the better we'll understand personal motivations and ambitions of the next generation of players, owners, and managers.

Secondly, the cream of the crop want to win the CL. Nothing at club level matters to them, not even the EPL, or the Liga, or whatever else. A fact: we don't have CL this season, nor will we the next.

Another factor is that Liverpool's thinking is very old, in fact, very ancient. This oft-quoted phrase that "no player is bigger than the club" is garbage, pure hogwash. Torres showed that players' too are important, that some players can be as big as a club. Look at recent instances on how Wenger held on to Fabregas for so long, or SAF to Rooney, and even Liverpool to Gerard ? We left Torres leave. We could have and should have tried more to hang onto him. I think any other top club would have. We are not a top club anymore.

  • purify_the_body

First, wrong is a slippery concept here, Anne. There's nothing "wrong" with divorcing your wife when she gets cancer, but it doesn't show class, integrity, loyalty, or respect. Leaving on the last day of January to a rival is like slipping out the back door to move in with your wife's co-worker -- very different than a proper divorce where you talk things out, etc., then finally move out.

Second, Liverpool's thinking is not ancient or outdated. Perhaps you approve of Tevez' "I'm bigger than the club" behavior at City?

Third, the league matters a lot to every player in it. They all want to win it, definitely.

You are wrong about a lot of things...not everything, but plenty...

  • PDubz18

Wenger had a project in full bloom built around Fabregas, same with SAF and Rooney. The Gerrard to Chelsea rumors were similar in that Liverpool played like shit without Gerrard on the field at that time.

The difference is that Torres was sick of seeing terrible decisions being made and playing Woy tactics with Woy trying to spur him on.

We let Torres go on the back of a club sale and a beginning of a new project. Torres didn't want any part of it, so we got top dollar (Carroll + 15 pounds) for him and got over him. He wanted to leave, and he wanted to go to Chelsea. Rush and Souness both went to Italian clubs, not the clubs that are most likely to cause us the most threat of our CL spot. Had Rooney and Fabregas left, do you think they would have even wanted to go to one of the club domestic rivals? I don't think so, and that's why most of the fans hate Torres for what he did.

Now we have a project not built around Fernando Torres, and I think it is much better that it is not. He is just not the same player as he was before going under the knife.

  • Luis Suarez dentist

Would love Torres back ( can we give Chelsea Downing and Carroll?).

Thing is unfortunately I can't see it happening.

  • Geoff Twentyman

Do you mean Downing (no goals, no assists)?

  • Welcome home El Nino, all is forgiven, you don't look like a girl, I was only messin

  • Eddie

all of el nino's goals right here : http://football-talk.co.uk/521...

  • KC

Back when he left, I hated Torres. How could he betray our club like that? But I can say I kinda fell into the bandwagon of hatred towards him because I'm a new fan so I generally follow rather than make my own decisions. One day I saw an uncle wear a Torres jersey and I asked him why he wore it when he betrayed us like that and he said that he feels no hate towards the guy because he did so much for the team when he was here. It was eye-opening to see it like that. I did find much enjoyment at seeing him get smashed in the face by a D'Agger elbow but it does pain me that such a brilliant player has lost so much of his form.

One incident that comes to mind is when Liverpool first beat Chelsea this season in the league and at the end of the game, Torres went and hugged Lucas and chatted with him and smiled. I get a general feeling that no one at Chelsea is like that with him. That moment just really got me and kinda melted away most of my remaining negativity towards him. I'm a softie at heart. He deserves better than what he is getting at Chelsea but if he's going to find his form again, I'd prefer it to be at Liverpool or in another league.

  • Suarez from the car park...

He's not done the business to earn that respect from Chelski players.  Not all his fault, they don't play to his strengths, he's slower now and the game is faster/defences more organised.

He did us a favour if his decline is permanent.

It's a short career, fraught with obstacles, I certainly don't blame him for doing what he did, but I think he made the wrong decision in that he should have waited for the summer with the new manager coming in.  He could have done well with Suarez.

That being said, opportunities (and those wages) might not have been available had Chelski bought someone else.

  • Dan

Torres is made for LFC. Please bring him back.

  • Alifzulzharif

    yes please..:)

  • RedDownUnda

Look, there's only one real reason to get him back - he looks like absolute shite in blue. Have a look at him in red, no comparison. No wonder he can't play at the moment, he's in the wrong colour. It's so fucking obvious. He needs LFC Red like Samson needs his dreadies.

And I don't care how stupid/wrong/unlikely/pathetic it is; I'd like him back thanks. And I'm singing it in the shower until it happens. (Sung to The Equals 'Baby Come Back) - "Come back. Daa da de da daaa. Nando come back. Daa da de da daaa." Repeat until wife beats you senseless with an overweight West Highland White terrier.

Once again, thank you and goodnight.

PS. Ed, you are becoming a truly funny bastard "...purchase a player you sold who’s scored fewer goals than the player you
bought with the money earned from the player you sold to try to prove a
point that the player you bought wasn’t worth that much..." Priceless mate.

  • Ed

Appreciated. I blame my lack of funny lately on having -63 hours during the week to actually commit to the blog. Much easier to go be snarky on Twitter for five minutes than write something semi-coherent.

  • redtrev73

"Repeat until wife beats you senseless with an overweight West Highland White terrier."
This is quality mate!! Already a magnificently comical image but the fact that the terrier is overweight pushes it into the realm of absurdist genius!!

  • Suarez from the car park...

Not a nice thing to call the trouble and strife.

  • Redarmy

Everybody is talking about a new striker these days, but buying one in january means giving up on Carroll. I guess Ashley would gladly take him back on loan, and I don't wanna see a grin on f..ing Mike's face. What I'm saying is it's to early to dump Andy. I'd much rather see us getting some sort of creative midfielder/wide man/winger which we don't have right now. A Maxi type of player, but younger and more energetic. Any suggestions?

  • Latortillablanca

i dunno, if we get a loanee, or a clearly developmental player, or someone who's older and just a poacher 'fox in the box' type player, i think itd benefit us, while not crowding anyone out of the pecking order.  we've only got 3 strikers that can actually hold up leading the line solo, so we're short a body...

  • Geoff Twentyman

Hazard, Gotze, Muller, Schurrle, Reus, Eriksen, Kagawa spring to mind

  • jpr

Yea. Let's look for a killer midfielder in January and see what it does for our goal scoring. The hell with Torres. Too likely to be $30 mil wasted. Why would we give up on Andy. Kenny won't.

  • Redarmy

thanks! Lots of guys from germany though, not sure if we could realistically get one of those

  • Geoff Twentyman

Thats our problem - we've not had enough success recently nor do we have oil money to fund massive transfer fees and wages.

BUT the owners have to be brave about the here and now. It's all very well recruiting the pick of the talented youth, but we also need class on our books right this very isntant!

  • Coleyiii99

I already got rid of my Torres jersey's and they were my favorites next to my Black Gerrard jersey.  Yes I was hurt and when he left and went through the 5 stages of overcoming grief I a man enough to admit it.  I also got a kick out of Agger's elbow to the face, served him right.  Honestly, its not so much the 20 mil cost as it is his wages I believe that he was just below Gerrard in wages when he left at arounf 130,000 a week whereas Carroll is at 80,000 a week.  I believe that would be what would kill the deal is the wage expense.  John Henry has stated in the past that we had a bloated wage structure and I doubt that he would want to increase it and I also think they had something to do with why they let Torres leave in the first place.  I doubt that Torres would take that big of a pay cut but if he did and apologised for the way he acted I would love to see him back home.  In hindsight I would have wished I had not donated an expensive jersey to the local thrift shop though.  If he comes home he will come good I will garantee it.

  • purify_the_body

Just to be clear, Henry stated that he expected to *increase* our total wages. But he also said that he was shocked at who we were paying the wages to, with long-term contracts for old, low-impact players getting too much, and that he thought it would take a few years to turn that around.

  • Red2death

That 81 goal compilation made me realize how much I preferred blond Torres.

  • Suarez from the car park...

I'm pretty relaxed about my feminine side too!

  • Filo Sobh

Torres coming back to my Fav Team is a Dream, I Hope he comes back and Apologize for what he did. Him and Suarez up front will be unstoppable, nd both will bring Champions League Football Back to Anfield, Inshallah He comes back, F9T <3

  • Leonerik

No way, no way for the guy and there's no room for romantic affair here. The shit way He left the Club in January for his desired move to Chelsea, forcing the Club to find a replacement in the deadline day, showed no class and no gratitude for The Club, the Manager and the Fans Who loved him, and protected him in an unconditional through good and bad moments. He was the Liverpool's no 9, a "Legend in the making", an icon for all LFC & World football fans, and He threw that for a plastic club He perceived "as a bigger club" than Liverpool. In the aftermath of his "big move" He slams Liverpool as a smaller Club, and He continued to put Liverpool in a dark light at any occasion. No chance, no chance there and I do not want to heard this rumour. Historic comeback is part of Liverpool's saga, but not for men like Torres Who proved to be  absolute shite.

  • GerrardsBoxingCoach

I actually never really thought he slammed the club that badly, except with that "big club" comment, which was quite possibly a completely inadvertent insult that he didn't mean to deliver.  In fact, I always thought he made more of a point to say that he wouldn't turn on the club and its supporters, in spite of things that were said about him by the fans, because the supporters (he claimed) didn't know the whole story of why he left.

  • Singsuperman

Hv a feeling that Villa & Torres wil hv tol make a loan move come January.Unless Del Bosque promised they'll b chosen for Euro in 6mths time despite not playing regularly?

  • Singsuperman

Don't think it's true at all. But if somehow, KD is offered Torres & is considering, then let it only be a loan move not a perm transfer! Think deep into this and you'll all agree why.

  • Dazton_2000

I would take him back in a heartbeat

I love Torres, he was absolutely amazing at Liverpool, even when he wasn't at top form he was still a threat

That arsenal champions league goal will remain with me forever.

  • kenny

Well, here goes. Fernando Torres was the reason I started watching Football. I was watching a Spain game and saw him. I thought to myself, "Wow, who is this guy?" The commentators were talking about Liverpool, so I quickly went and looked Liverpool up and when their next game was (My coach when I was a teen was also a follower...More below). This was the end of the 08-09 season. Next season came and I was so excited. I had done all the studying I possibly could have. I learned so much about the club. I felt so connected. 09-10 was a season for me to remember. Following Liverpool became my passion. I was mesmerized by the way Torres played, and everyone else. This was for me. 7th place I felt robbed (The 2-0 win over Manchester was the best thing I have ever felt). It was a good and bad feeling for me, good because I knew the next year, we would be right back up there. Bad because it's very far from where we should've been. I didn't want Rafa to get sacked, and was distraught when he was. Hodgson was a terrible replacement. But Liverpool went to him. He took the job and did what he wanted to do, and it just didn't work, and it didn't make very many people happy. I am so thankful I witnessed the revolution. I am so thankful I am alive to see Kenny today, and his new reign. (I am not old enough to have witnessed first-hand his previous glory days, but I did do my history).

Pretty much, I owe Torres for making me love football and love Liverpool. He introduced me to my life! I will never forgive him for saying the things he did and then leaving, but he always has a place in me.

Anyway, I brought him up to my coach, and he was a fan. Being in America, I wasn't as aware about football. People would talk about Manu, and I would have no idea what they were talking about. So I was happy to find someone who I knew what he was talking about, I could kinda keep the interest going. I was falling out of football, I had been playing a while, but it wasn't sticking. Until Torres came along it revived me, to watch someone so amazing, on an amazing team. It made me want to keep playing. Keep watching. So close to falling out, going a different path in life, Liverpool got me back in. 3 years strong now.

Now, some might say I don't know what I'm talking about or I'm not worthy because I haven't been a follower as long as "necessary", I might be young (not that young), but I know what it means to be a follower of this wonderful club. This isn't a bandwagon for 2nd place team in 08-09 with the some of the world's greatest players in Alonso, Gerrard, and Torres, the only ones really known. I found all the squad magnificent, I paid attention to all. They were my family.

I feel the emotion when we lose, when we win, and when we draw.

Torres was here when I came in, but he'll be leaving without me. YNWA

Your comment really resonated with me as I'm also young (a teenager, in fact) and it was also Torres who got me into Liverpool. It was during the 2nd league game with Man Utd in the 2007/08 season and that really was the beginning of my obsession (meant in a good way) with LFC. Great words by you.

  • redtrev73

Well in kenny. To hell with snobs who reckon you need to serve an apprenticeship. You love the club, you want to know as much as you can. Therefore you are a top man in my book. Simples.

Would've been great if he'd made a turnaround during the January window ala Gerrard when he was wooed by Chelsea back then.

That said, he's at an age when he's supposed to be hitting his peak but we are obviously aware that he's way into a decline which no one knows if it's only going to continue in a downward spiral or even if it recovers, how far back can he get back to?

The romantic in me hoped during that last day of the January transfer window that his transfer request was all a farce and would die down like Gerrard's protracted move to Chelsea before, but it did not and the boat has sailed.

It would make no sense that we take him back when we're trying to move forward, moreover, he is no Fowler.

An up and coming striker who could potentially be even better than what Torres ever was would be a good direction to move in rather than thinking about Torres. It's a case of what could've been but the man himself took the decision to put an end to his growing legend and while we will remember him, the pleasant memories will be but a footnote in Liverpool's future.

  • Suarez from the car park...

I don't think we'll get another striker with that style and ability to terrorise. His link with Gerrard was near telepathic, that won't be seen again.

Unfortunately, his extra pace has gone and defences are better organised than they were, I just don't believe that kind of striker will be found for a very long time.

My concern is that strong sides not only have a knack for hitting the net, but as the video and stronger sides are showing, the pace in the game is everything and we're not producing that, and won't without new recruits.

  • I was extremely butthurt when I heard the news. I remember a lot of talk on LFCtv about the need for him to come out and dismiss the Chelsea rumours publicly. I scoffed at the idea. Why should he? He's our Niño, he's not going anywhere! Especially not to useless, aging Chelsea who's key players are all a season or two from retiring. If Liverpool are in bad shape now, it's nothing compared to what Chelsea will be when Anelka, Drogba, Terry, Lampard, Kalou, Malouda, etc etc all retire. A transfer to Chelsea makes no sense!

Then the transfer request news came in, but somehow my eyes missed the headline and I scrolled straight down to the comments. Fans were up in arms, shouting, baying for his blood, calling high treason. "All this because he won't come out and dismiss the rumours? Get a grip, mates! Where's your faith?" I thought to myself with a chuckle. Until I scrolled up and read the headline. ..Again. ...And again. And again... still not believing it. "This must be a mistake," I thought. "A typo. Or perhaps a dishonest journo... but this is liverpoolfc.tv. It had to be true! ....Why? Why, Nando, why...??"Then Agger elbowed him in the face and I jumped up and punched the air in glee. I put on a tough exterior, I tell my mates and little brother that we're better off without him. But I still catch myself absent-mindedly whistling his tune. I see him in Blue and sometimes take just a fraction of a second to wish that fate could have reconsidered... before giving him the mandatory middle finger. Yeah, he hurt me bad, much like he did many of you. And maybe I do secretly want him back. But Kenny's LFC pride will never allow it. FSG's future-minded plans have no room for a player who's likely already given his best years to us. And while I do still chuckle with schadenfreude everytime a Spain XI is announced with his name absent... I still take just that fraction of a second to curse fate for forcing us down this path.

-And to think, I was originally going to go with a two word comment: "fuck no."

  • redtrev73

You brought me right back there DJ....and you're right, Kenny spoke warmly about 'nando as a character and a decent man when he took over, despite his travails and questionable attitude over the season to that point. The greatest striker in tthe club's history supporting a potential heir to his throne. Then our ex no. 9 paid him back with an 11th hour transfer request to a rival Prem club, something he swore he could never do. So, after all your eloquence, let me row in behind A definitive "Fuck no!"

  • Suarez from the car park...

decision is definitely a no, infact there's no decision to be made.  I have to say though, I'm very sad he's not firing because it's good for football and the league, and it may well be that his top class career has infact finished.

For such a high achiever that is sad.

  • Zuco

He was promised lots buy old owners he only should have given kenny 6 months.
I am sure that chelsea have to give liverpool money still for torres and mereleis
    something could be worked out.
suarez and torres have same agent it was all wrong from everyone past owners and torres shouldnt of said what he did . but every LFC supporter around the world will cry with joy . torres is 27  david villa is older and 40 mil plus we are all hurting not just fernando knows how big liverpool is.

  • Sharadbhavan

    torres please come back

  • Red2death

It'd be great to have him back.  He's quality through and through, just short of confidence - and if anyone can give a player that shot in the arm they need, it's Mr Kenny Dalglish.

But I don't see Chelsea selling.  They know who they bought and I think they'll stick by him till he comes good for them.

If Torres becomes miraculously available to us for some cut price next month, by all means let's get him back.  But I'm certainly not holding my breath on this one.

  • Geoff Twentyman

'They' say that form is temporary and class is permenant. On this basis, if there's any truth in the rumour that Chelsea would sell and Kenny thinks he'd fit the system and he can get the boy firing again; who wouldn't agree?

'They' say never go back. Well I agree with that when it comes to ex girlfirends, but I'm not so sure it necessarily rings true for footballers. He's 27, not 32 (see Craig Bellamy who doesn't seem to be having too many problems on his return).
Many will refer to Ian Rush (I was gutted when he left...) not being as good on his return as his first stint at the club, but he did go on to break all sorts of records.

For me, its all about whether Kenny thinks he'd fit the system and whether he can get him scoring goals again; I can forget the Judas thing cause I can assure you all that I've told an employer I'm committed to them whilst securing a better salery elsewhere and in business, if it was right to go back, I wouldn't think twice about it and as en amploer, I would have the right people back in a heart beat.

  • Red2death

"For me, its all about whether Kenny thinks he'd fit the system and whether he can get him scoring goals again"
I think he'd definitely fit into the system.  Keep in mind the system was created with Torres very much a part of it.  The whole reason we have Luis Suarez is because we needed a strike partner for Torres.  We've had to adapt since then, but a reversion back to the original plan would certainly be welcome.

  • deadlydirk_killerkuyt

A: oi you! that blue team is offering us big money for you. i want you to go there, make a big deal out of it then just play like crap for them.

B: sure i don't mind. as long as you take me back when they're losing it.

A: of course. how about we make it next january then. a year from now. that always a tough time in the season. if you do it right they'll be struggling with mid table teams then.

B: definitely. and why don't you ask one of the tattoed guys to just elbow me in the face when we meet. you know, to make it look good.

A: even better. in the mean time, i think i'm going to splash out some money on a big lug to cover up this whole thing. maybe someone with a flashy ponytail. you know how the brittish press are, they follow the flashy ones.

B: good idea. by then, those blues won't know what hit them and reds will make some good money.

A: you just worry about your hair and i'll worry about the money.

  • Geoff Twentyman

  • Suarez from the car park...

    That high?

  • how can you trust a person who walked out on us when we were at the darkest hour of our history? how could Gerrard, Carra, Reina, Kuyt, Johnson, Lucas, Maxi, and Dalglish himself trust him again when they all needed each other to lift the club?

  • Geoff Twentyman

The darkest hour of our history was 1989 mate....

  • Suarez from the car park...

He gave the club 6 months from his original decision which was a disaster thanks to Purslow, if you had to make a big decision in life you might do the same thing.
Give it 6 months and if things aren't changing for the better than that's it.

  • purify_the_body

Of course it will never, never happen, but I do hope he moves out of England so the healing process can begin. Every time he appears for Chelsea it is like picking the scab again.

That video of the 81 goals is interesting. You can really see him rampaging through the channels using his pace and power -- something he has never been allowed to even attempt at Chelsea. His directness is stunning and contrasts with the twisting and turning of Suarez. And his display of class and grace are refreshing after watching clumsy Carroll fall down so many times this season.

Can't wait to get through this lukewarm transitional phase and have great players at the club again.

  • for 20m or swap for the ponytail

  • Kiz_898

If he does this to Kenny publicly for all the disrespect in the media and for leaving us and sulking when we needed him: http://www.thecampussocialite....

then i wouldnt mind seeing him back, but he would be below alot of players in the pecking order for me not that I ever did like him much

  • Mike

The sad part is his song is one of the best songs ever chanted. It pains me that it's gone. That being said, bring back Raul first. And force Aquilani at gunpoint to play for us.
