Not a bad draw and I don’t foresee us having many problems advancing to tell you the truth. FC Porto worries me a little being a Portuguese side, but two teams advance from the group stage and Marseille and Beşiktaş J.K. just don’t have the talent nor depth to compete with us. I expect this year to be a bit different than the past three under Benitez though. In the past, especially in the first couple of matches of the group stages as we size up our competition, we’ve seemed to be satisfied with a draw away from Anfield. I suspect this year we’ll try to advance as quick as possible to the knockout stages so we can concentrate on the league. I’ll do further breakdowns of our group stage opponents in a very near future post.

In other news, Besian Idrizaj was sent out on loan to Crystal Palace and Rafa has revealed that a new signing will probably not be coming our way before the transfer window closes Friday at 11:59 PM GST. Oh well, cheers.

As for the rest of the draw, here’s what I think:
Easiest group to predict - Group A
If Liverpool and FC Porto don’t come out of that group, I’ll probably need to be treated for trauma.

Funnest group - Group H
Arsenal and Sevilla should advance, but there should be some great matches involving them along with FC Steaua and Slavia Praha

Group of Death - Group D?
It really depends on how good Milan is, but I still think second place is up for grabs as Benfica lost Simao Sabrosa and Shakhtar is a lot better and deeper than people think

Most unpredictable group - Group G
If the real Inter stands up, they should advance, but as for second who knows? Neither PSV or Fenerbache stand out and CSKA Moskva could still sneak in

I don’t know. I think Marseille may be able to edge out Porto. CSKA Moscow could well make it through that group. Arsenal’s definitely looks easiest especially if AEK can upset Sevilla.

Marseille is having some major injury issues at the moment, but if they can sort those out, they do have a legitimate shot. Porto is freakin’ loaded though. Despite losing Anderson, Pepe, and Hugo Almeida, they still have a decent squad anchored by Quaresma, Jorge Fucile, and Lucho Gonzalez. Inexperience might do them in though.

Like Brian said, Marseille are DECIMATED by injury at this point and have only taken 6 points in 6 matches domestically so far. This group should be a cakewalk for both Liverpool and Porto.

We’re not so hot right now. But don’t count us out just yet. last time both our team faced each other in 2004, we won and advanced. Let’s wait til september.

    Brian,
Both Arsenal and Liverpool have got the easiest groups amongst English teams. Liverpool should go thru. Which team goes next remains puzzle.

Yeah man, Marseille doesn’t have “major injury issues”. Their keeper is hurt, but they’ve got a very decent backup, and otherwise they’re more or less 100%. Just you watch: Bolo Zenden is gonna score five at Anfield.

I thought Cisse was injured in their last match?

Also, Sam, if Bolo scores one goal, he’ll probably save the trouble of Liverpool fans of breaking his neck by trying one of his trademark backflips. Ha ha ha.

And we picked up some French kid named Damien Plessi from Lyon. Any thoughts from you or Inara on him? Cheers.

Cissé is injured but not majorly. It’s just that MArseille’s preparation was too hard pgysically this year.
So Djib won’t play but he would have been fit to play against Italy.

As for damien Plessis, the kid was one of the best french players at the U19 European championship. Liverpool must have seen him there. He was just ridiculous. He has only played with the reserve a few times but has never made it to the big team. HOullier doesn’t trust youth.

To be honest i don’t think liverpool while come out top of this group it seems that now the English Premier League is way, way, way overated other teams in europe that are fantastic sides (hint FC PORTO) and for anyone who didn’t get that FC PORTO seem to become crappy national league teams ehmmmmmm i don’t think so. I think that liverpool won’t beat porto at the Dragao or at your all of a sudden fortress anfield and i don’t see you brushing Olympique de Marseille aside either especially at the Velodrome, and sorry Turkish sides are not crap either they will put up a fight.

So the way I see it English sides are not going to do that well in europe this year especially Man U and Chelsea because they do not play the right type of football to win the CL and don’t be surprised if Liverpool don’t make it out their group on top or even second!!!.

PS I don’t think anyone noticed but look at Liverpools Qualification to the Final Last year

Satring at Knockout Stages ( I actually thought Liverpool did quite well)

Liverpool 2-2 Barcelona (Note= Barcelona players falling out with each other, Manager uncertain to be there much longer, Ronaldhino getting fat, no Samuel Eto,o)

Liverpool 4-0 PSV Eindhoven (Note= again backroom arguments, players falling out again coach uncertainty, massive downfall in performances after winter break)

Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea PENS ( Some manager problems but they did deserve to go through after that performance from Chelsea

If those teams were in form im not so sure they would have been the same results

P.S Liverpool fans do not i repeat do not get your hopes up
