We all dream of a team of Carraghers

By: Jim | December 11th, 2006

It takes a lot for men to engage in group hugs at 10 a.m. on a Saturday morning. That’s just too early for male embrace, but the Guinness and Jamie Carragher’s first Premiership goal in nearly eight years Saturday brought out the joyful congratulations at the pub. It was like hearing a buddy’s first kid was just born or something.

For all the miserable luck away from Anfield, Liverpool is fourth in the table, even with Portsmouth on points but behind in goal differential by one. There’s plenty to feel good about, even if the prize lusted for so desperately at the start of the season – The League – is beyond reach.

Now, for Rafa to get his hands on some of that Dubai money in January …

I don’t really get this enthusiasm about the Dubai takeover. Ultimately, it will be better for the club, but honestly, who do you think we’re going to pick up come January to help the squad. I like our team as it is right now and if we try and sign someone, it’s going to mean we’ll probably have make room for them. We don’t need another striker, Lord knows we don’t need another midfielder, and for Christ’s sake, Sammi rarely gets to play as it is, so another defender is not necessary. The only thing I see good about it is our ability to sign someone when we need an injury replacement.

I think Daniel Alves would be a good start in January, even more so now that Mourinho has targeted him for Chelsea. If Mourinho wants him bad enough to pay any price, then so be it. But Rafa has wanted Alves for two straight transfer windows now and Liverpool hasn’t been able to find the money. Alves is an attacking, dynamic right back. Not that there’s anything wrong with Stevie Finnan, but Alves is a cut above the Irishman, I’d argue.
