Weekly POLL: To Vicente or Not to Vicente?

By: CSD | October 15th, 2008

It seems that the only ones not disappointed in the recent decision to ban Atletico Madrid from playing at home for the next 2 matches is UEFA. Atletico is pissed. Torres and Reina are pissed. Liverpool fans who bought tickets to the game in Madrid are pissed. Was this a good way to punish Atletico for incidents of racism against Marseille or should UEFA have found another alternative that didn’t inconvenience so many people?

I voted yes, but I need to qualify it: it’s certainly not fair to the travelling Kop, or to Torres, but Atletico certainly had to be punished severely to send a genuine message of intent from UEFA. Now, I think there’s a better, less destructive way to do this–just make this punishment come later on in the group stages, or for two league games. Although I believe they targeted Liverpool not because they hate the English (especially the Scousers)–though UEFA loathes anything British–but because they knew that Atletico would take a huge hit from not being able to play at home with Torres coming back and a big, big club coming to the Vicente Calderon. As such, they need to find a way to punish them equally hard, but with enough lag time to not endanger the pay packets of travelling supporters.

I voted yes– isn’t sending a message about racism slightly more important than letting Torres play in Calderon stadium? I was looking forward to it as well–but it seems really selfish to consider my enjoyment of watching Torres tear it up at Atletico more important than the humiliation of the Marseille players who had to endure the humiliation of monkey calls. However, I do think UEFA should use the money from the Atletico fine to reimburse Liverpool fans who made travel arrangements.

That being said– it does also protect Liverpool’s black players (Ryan Babel) who would probably receive the same reception.

I voted yes and agree with David “UEFA should use the money from the Atletico fine to reimburse Liverpool fans who made travel arrangements.” Most execellent Idea.
