Video: Steven Gerrard v. Blackburn

By: Ed | December 27th, 2011

On a day that ended in such a frustratingly familiar fashion, one of the lone causes for optimism was the return of Steven Gerrard. The captain’s initial return effort earlier in the season was cut short, leaving Liverpool with the task of forming an identity that didn’t involve the man who’s been such an integral part of the club’s success over the past thirteen years. There’s an argument to be made for the fact that they actually started that task last season, but with only two starts in the 2011-2012 campaign, Gerrard’s been an afterthought for most.

So that he came on to immediate effect yesterday was a sight for sore eyes, providing the class and quality that the club’s so badly missed at times this season. That doesn’t take anything away from those who have stepped up in his stead—Jordan Henderson’s been particularly impressive and flourished in a more central role—but there’s just no way to replace the impact that Steven Gerrard can have.

We’ll probably all keep our optimism tempered for now, as the false dawn earlier this season is too fresh to allow us to plan for a future that definitely includes Gerrard. But taking into account the worrying self-consciousness that Liverpool’s displayed this season, along with the lack of cutting edge, his return couldn’t have come at a better time.

Now let’s just hope it’s the last return he has to make this season.

There we go again, another 2 points drropped. What a "Puki Mak" kind of performance is this.

What a christmas gift by club.25 minutes of fit steve on the field.Let me tell guys steve will make this wait worth it.Owen and Fernando have enjoyed vision and passes of steve and scored goals for fun and its time for andy carroll to step up and establish a combination with steve.

The most critical component of Liverpool making a serious challenge for the CL places is a healthy Stevie G. The 25 minutes he was on the pitch Monday confirmed that for me. There dynamic synergism that was missing from our midfield and forward play for the first 70 minutes was instantly returned. Maxi should have finished that delivery from the direct kick. And what a direct free kick. No one on the team comes close. Charlie and Luis are not in the same league. In the 25 minutes that Stevie G. was on the pitch we had 12 clear cut goal scoring chances and some of those chances were actually harder to miss than to score. A good goal scoring chance every two minutes from 70 to 95 minutes. I can't wait for him to get match fit and for the rest of the guys to get used to his sorely missed world class talents. If Stevie was in the game for the full 90, the score would have been 5 - 0.

  • Suarez from the car park...

pure class.  And delivery upon delivery.  Push and receive and push forwards again. He drives the play so well it gets your heart racing, and the crosses are always dangerous.

To my mind Adam isn't high up the pitch enough to be effective and Hendo doesn't really drive or control anything (young and developing).

    jonny, agreed on all points.

for me, the adam/henderson pairing is from hunger - and it's neither guys' fault.  for every 5yds charlie advances, and with his lack of pace (etc.), he knows he's liable for 7-odd yds of makeup if he has to backtrack. which leaves the long ball as the high dividend/high risk/low (personal) cost default option. he needs to be in a 3-man mid or on the bench.

now that stevie's back-ish, and if we're not gonna play seba and fabio in a 2-man mid, i'd like to see stevie and jordan play together in a 3-man with Jay holdin it down. *pls. disregard any alternate readings of the preceding* jordan's game, while improving (if functional), lacks ideas sometimes and playing with #8 will be the quickest route to his development. and that 16 (20?) mil needs developing asap.

still think Coates is the key to 'replacing' Lucas though, and using whatever loot's available on a fucking goal scorer or two.

  • Suarez from the car park...

Did suarez go quiet after gerrard came on?  His best link so far is with Maxi.

  • Antonio

Good to see Gerrard back, but it take a while for him to hit top gear, but his vision and passing still there which we have been missing recently, as you don't rely on player of C. Adam to provide.
When Liverpool bought Adam, we are already classify as middle table team. Apart some occasional good passes, Adam did not prove to be a quality enough player. Most of the time adjusting ball to suit his left foot and slowing thing down, he is neither a quick player. The miss penatly and own goal don't help eithter.
The best bet now is Gerrard and Spearing in the middle of the field with Spearing operating as CDM, before Luas available again.
However after spenting money on Adam and Henderson, I doubt the Liverpool management team want to admit they are of poor buying and they will try very hard to continue play them, and we will continue to roam around middle table. Sad but realistic.
Jose E is the only player I found can hold and control a football more comfortably than any of other Liverpool player.
Downing although so far not contributing any assist and goal, still remain as the most attacking minded player for Liverpool.
    Just my personal thought.

It's like coming home to Mom's homemade chicken mole enchiladas after 10 months of bean-and-cheese burritos from Taco Bell.

  • Suarez from the car park...

that sounds like a pretty torturous 10 months .

  • CharlieAdamsBuckteeth

Stevie's passes against Blackburn were everything Charlie Adam tries to do with none of the baggage that comes along with it.  But that video is all about 1:11 to me - even when it misses by a mile, that is my favorite shot in soccer.  WHAM.

The Stevie G Special.  When he hits those right it's a beautiful thing.

And then he walks off, staring at the ground. As if no one saw. Ohgeehowdthatgetoverthur?

"Now let’s just hope it’s the last return he has to make this season."

So the next niggle to his groin dong is gonna be season-ending?  Shit...

  • Luis Suarez dentist

Great to see our captain back and to have a scouser back in the team! Can't agree with you about Henderson though, don't think he has added much at all.

  • Waiting for Sterling

Thats what a lot of critics say about Lucas.  J dawg adds simplicity and a quality touch.  He's composed on the ball, quick and has great vision of the field.  Does well with keeping a play alive; he can play quickly or slowly.  What's not to like about him? He's 21.  Kids got future and I'm behind him.

  • Luis Suarez dentist

I think it's a sign of extreme desperation to compare Hendo to Lucas. Put simply Lucas is miles ahead of Hendo. We are talking here about one of the very best holding midfielders in the World (Lucas) compared to an overpriced kid who has done nothing yet and still has it all to prove.

They don't even really play in the same position. Hendo is not a holding midfielder and he certainly isn't a leader like Lucas.

  • Reba

there is a chance I'm wrong on this, but isn't Henderson the captain of the England U21 squad?  He would have the armband if he lacked leadership qualities.

No one is saying he's there yet, just that he has potential, and that some of us are willing to back him on his journey, and not throw him overboard before he's had a chance to really get started.

  • KC

Agreed. At least when I watch games now it doesn't feel like he's completely disappeared. Plus I see him hustling other players, helping out Glen Johnson now and keeping the ball in possession.

  • Momo

Right,Hendo has an upper body but no legs,he must be told once and for all that Football game is about kicking the ball ,he must learn to stick his two feet and be less that fearing injury player we watch week in week out.At LFC we need 100% commitment, but I'm sure if he learns how to win the first ball,he'll become a star player overnight who would be reckoned with as a major force in the middle of the park, may be better than Masch and M'vila both combined.

  • brother jon

it's almost like hendo has been told that his defensive responsibility is to shadow the other guy, but not to win the ball back. he spends a lot of energy keeping up, but not much thought about how to close down options once he gets there.

  • Momo

You're taking words from my mouth,100% right, best description of the facts. Thank you brother jon.
