Video: Sebastian Coates v. Chelsea

Rumour has it that although the initial diagnosis wasn’t a positive one, until the swelling goes down enough to perform an MRI the exact nature and extent of Lucas’ injury won’t be known. By most accounts that means later on today there’s a good chance we’ll find out just went wrong, which jumble of letters describe the part that went wrong, and how long he’s likely to be out because of it. Until then, though, nothing is entirely certain—no matter how bad the circumstantial evidence seems.

Rumour also has it that until solid news on that front comes out it will be difficult to start things off with anything other than an acknowledgement that there has in fact been no news yet, and that no news is no news. With that out of the way, and accepting that a potentially season-ending injury to one of the club’s key players rather puts a damper on any attempts at in-depth tactical deconstructions of events at Stamford Bridge, we’re still left with the need to move on to something. And something in this case might as well be Sebastian Coates, since by most agree he played well in his second outing for Liverpool. Plus there just happens to be video available detailing his exploits, and that always helps.

As against Stoke in his first Liverpool match, Coates made one major error on the night, the kind of thing that would have had many fans calling for the head of a more experienced centre half. Thankfully on both occasions Liverpool went on to win the match, allowing the more reactionary sorts to mark it down as a learning experience for a far from experienced centre half. For most, however, far more important than David Luiz throwing away the chance at a penalty by sticking his leg out and beginning his swan dive before he’d even reached a recklessly sprawling Coates—and thereby earning himself a yellow card instead of a penalty—will be the way the young Liverpool defender shrugged off the early misstep to put in a nearly perfect performance from that point on.

He may not look the finished product quite yet, but his quality—and confidence—is already hard to deny. Amongst all the tackles, challenges, and headers, perhaps the only thing that stands out in any kind of negative light when one revisits his performance on Tuesday is his tendency to chase the ball at times. There may not be anything unusual about a defender pressing his man, but if his occasional wanderlust isn’t paired with teammates willing and able to cover for it, it could lead to problems. Which, in a way, brings things back around to Lucas once again. For now, though, it’s time to revisit Coates’ performance against Chelsea, and with it one more reason to think that along with an increasingly assured starting duo of Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger, a resurgent Glen Johnson, a revelatory Jose Enrique, and another promising but already capable youngster in Martin Kelly, Liverpool’s future in defence suddenly seems far brighter than it did before the season began.

  • Lucas is out for the season, well fuck me that is terrible news.... Here's hoping Kenny splashes in January even though we have a few options as cover, all are stop gap including our captain as they don't do the same defensive work, a real blow during the Red's most impressive form in the last few years...... http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news... Pass that bottle of whiskey, stick on the Lucas compilations and cry yourself to sleep, happy December

Gutted Gutted Gutted. All the optimism I had for the rest of the season has just be drained out of me. Irreplaceable. Would rather have lost 8 - 0 to Chelsea.  No doubt there will be lots of discussions about replacements and systems etc. No doubt there will be optimistic views on how we can mitigate the loss. However, when we look back at the end of season this is the moment we will pinpoint where it all went wrong....

  • Suarez from the car park...

    ouch, that's gloomy!

  • Luis Suarez Dentist

Terrible news. Anterior Cruciate Ligament for Lucas. Out for the rest of the season. A big, big loss. Still Lucas is a fighter and it wont be long before he is back bossing the midfield. A future Liverpool captain without a doubt.Well I wonder if Barcelona will let us loan Masc for the rest of the season????????

Johnnie Walker and I have been brainstorming together the past hour or two or threee, and we've decided that Coates is pretty decent. We have also decided that Heskey needs to be brought in asap this winter for linkup play with andy carroll(+leomessi). Oh, and  Shelvey-"whatever-star-trek-guy-darth-vader-motherfucker-god-damn-alien-who-gives-a-fuck", don't really see how he can help with the recent destruction of lucas Suarez. Me must recall the Joe Cole for bill paying skills!

  • Ryan

And don't you try and tell me that we have two separate players and one's named Suarez and the other is Lucas. I'm under the impression that Lucas Suarez is a total boss man cross bred samba man who scores braces faster than a orthodonist while e-brakin the church bus in front of the back four.

    annnnnnnd he's injured too. damn.

  • Suarez from the car park...

you're friend Mr Walker has  a lot to answer for.  i'd scapegoat him a lot more in the future.

    A couple of points;

    1) Coates could be a monster for us for a decade if he keeps his progression up. Fantastic kid with so many attributes. May want to revisit his ideas on appropriate penalty-box tackling technique and may also need a Chaz Adam-type lesson in when-and-where to press but these are quibbles and detract from the positivity of young Seb's development.

    2) Sweet Baby Jesus...why has our Brasiliero been crocked? So sad for the kid. Just as even the mindless naysayers and lazy Sky pundits were starting to see what most intelligent Redmen knew for a couple of years now. There is no-one better in the Prem at the CDM role.

    3) Let me echo Mike's sentiments here. Lucas will return and captain a title-challenging side under Dalglish. Obviously there is fuck-all positive about his absence but the kid is so well-liked that his injury may have a galvanising effect on the team. Chaz is improving, ditto for Hendo. Andy will surely come good in front of goal (his effort is unquestionable, his luck, like LFC's, stinks). Luis will find his scoring touch, ditto for Dirky. Spearo will be busy and productive in covering for Lucas and Jonjo returns after a productive loan-spell. Stewy? There's a class-act in there, but he hasn't come out to play yet. Newbies may or may not be required.

3)I would have echoed Mike's sentiments with a 'like' but disqus won't let me in this ugly new format. I detest and fear change...I'm going to hide in my nice OCD-friendly office...call me when it's safe to come out.

  • Mike

Each time I see Coates play I find that he is improving, getting used to the Premier League pace and style, and that he is looking like the beginnings of another Agger. So much so, that I have spent too much time looking at the Uruguay National Team on wiki hoping to find defensive midfielder and striker sleepers, as it were.

Oh, and re: Lucas; he will be back to help us win the league next year!

  • King Kong

That was a solid performance by Coates. That's how he played for Uruguay. Absolutely promising star for the future.

  • kenny

I think I'm going to throw up I'm so scared about Lucas, but enough on him, because we all know how horrible it is to lose him, how it's not like he's our best player and irreplaceable. Anyways, this was a Coates post? Just kidding, all credit to the kid, I think from each game he's played, I've only seen like 1 mistake, and it just so happened to be a big mistake, but he shakes it off and gets his game on! Very, very, very excited to see him on the pitch in the future. I can't wait to see him deal with City in the two semi-finals. Oh and Maxi, what would I do without him? Probably drink. HE NEEDS TO PLAY EVERY SINGLE GAME. He's scored in his last like 10 games(?) Even with some gaps inbetween. And! some hat-tricks here and there. So yeah.

  • kenny

Oh, and very happy for Kelly, I almost cried seeing him scored and how happy he was. I want more goals from him as well, he's very promising. And Bellamy is awesome I'm gonna cover my right arm in tattoos representing him.

  • Latortillablanca

lol, you know who else has scored a hat trick last season? Somen Tchoyi - a career cdm hodgsoned into a forward position...  he hit a purple patch, it happens, an its awesome for sure. but the whole thing about maxi being a goal scoring machine makes me laugh, because the fact that his games are spread so far apart is a pretty major distinction to, say, luis suarez going on a 10 game run of goalscoring...

if he were to start every game, people would prepare for him and presumably be able to shut down his mono-speed, no trick, lightweight style...  i'm not hatin, i love that he's able to just be plugged in once a month and contribute (not to mention all the intangibles he brings to the locker room) and long may that continue, but c'mon...
