Tom Hicks Jr. Has a Pint With the Locals. What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
By: CSD | February 25th, 2008Tom Hicks Jr. temporarily forgot that his father was hated by everyone in Liverpool and decided to go have a pint at a local pub after the Middlesbrough match. The pub of choice? Sandon, where the most extreme hooligans fans gather before and after LFC matches. As word that Hicks Jr. was in the pub quickly spread, the patrons turned hostile and spat at him. Hicks Jr. was then whisked away by his security guards.
I also wanted the opportunity to have a direct talk with some of the supporters.
I respect that some patrons have major disagreement with us, but that comes with the territory.
I did have several constructive conversations in my short visit and look forward to following up with them next time I am in Liverpool.
If he had been killed, the incident would be nominated for a Darwin Award. If I’m ever in Liverpool and decide to have a pint with my fellow Reds supporters, I’ll pretend to be from Canada. Not a bad idea, eh?

My feeling is that the owners are trying to build bridges, which is only a good thing, but have underestimated the strength of feeling against them, which is bad.
That said, I’ve got no time for anyone who spat or hurled beer at him. Behaviour like that does no one any good and it’s hopefully a good sign that “little” Tommy JR (he’s 6′4″) isn’t making a big deal out of it.
If this is the start of a constructive conversation with both sides listening to each other, I’ll be very happy.

I don’t for one moment condone the fans who allegedly spat at Hicks jnr but what was he thinking on going there? He can’t be that foolish to think he would be well received can he? If he wanted to speak to fans, which is a decent gesture to be fair, then there are much better ways of organising it. A supporters forum which is properly organised by the club or the Echo would have been one option and it would have been great to hear what he had to say in a controlled, constructive manner. But to just stroll into a pub unannounced and expect fans not to heckle him was naive in the extreme. I’m baffled at the thinking to be honest.

come on now Corey, don’t try to tell me that Scum Army they have up in Manchester wouldn’t do the same if Poppa or Jnr Glazer walked into one of your boozers ..
on second thought, they probably wouldn’t since all the United fans live in London ..
