The Sound of Crickets

By: CSD | August 27th, 2009

It has been relatively quiet around Liverpool recently. I think everyone is still speechless from the Villa catastrophe. A few things of note:

We’ll be facing Lyon, Fiorentina, and Debreceni in the group stages. Debre-who? They are the league champs from Hungary. Personally, I am not familiar in the least with Hungarian football and have no idea how much of a threat they will be. I’m guessing, not a lot. It’s a breath of fresh air to have some teams that the club has never met in European competition. In theory, Liverpool should have no problem being at the top of this group, with maybe Lyon coming in second. We’ll face Debreceni first on September 16th.

One of our promising youngsters, Krisztián Németh, has been loaned to AEK Athens for a year. This is great news for him as it will give him the opportunity to get some more experience. At the moment, unless someone in our squad gets injured, it is hard to get first team action. I would like to see a few more of these deals signed for some of the others. We have a huge squad that is just kind of sitting around.

It’s off to Reebok Stadium on Saturday to face Bolton. The team should predictably bounce back before the international break. The next league game after that will be against Burnley. Why am I suddenly worried about Burnley?

I know this is kind of a crap post. Sorry =(.

    That’s not very nice, Caco.

Anyway, I think Lyon’s a threat. They have a new scoring machine in Lisandro Lopez.

Wish Nemeth was given more first team action. He’s way better than Voronin…

I’m going out on a limb here but I think Veronin should play with Torres up front, with Gerrard dropping back deeper in midfield and Lucas dropping back to the Reserves.

Our next 4 fixtures are relatively easy, but then again I thought the Villa match was going to be easy too. Needless to say, I think we can all agree that anything less than 12 points would be a disappointment, considering that we’ve already dropped 6 out of 9.

I agree with Liverpool Shirts that until Aquilani suits up, Gerrard should drop back in the midfield. Lucas should remain on the bench and be called on only to deputize for Masch as our holding midfielder. The Brazilian in my opinion gets a lot of undeserved flak, but really he doesn’t have Xabi’s passing vision and offensive awareness. Too many times I see him failing to present himself into open space when the fullbacks are being pressed, and ends up with Liverpool losing possession.

But back to Gerrard…by moving him to the centre of midfield, I think Rafa has 2 formation options. If he goes with his favoured 4-2-3-1, I think we can play Yossi in the hole position, and have Riera assume the left wing role. Lately though I find that the defenses are getting used to Torres’ game and are simply crowding him in the box. If we go with a 4-4-2 formation, that extra striker (either Kuyt or Voronin) can help create more space for El Nino. Gerrard & Mascherano are world-class players who are more than capable of bossing the midfield, without the need for that 3rd central midfielder.

these days i hate Lucas with a passion but i think it’s all misplaced Alonso anger .. if the boy doesn’t get a chance, he’s never going to prove us wrong .. keep him in there and pounding away and pray to whatever higher power you deem fit that Alberto gets his shit in order sharpish ..

Gabby: It would be great if you could give us some info prior to the 2 teams match-up! :D

CSD: As much as I would like to see him drop back to Brazil, we might need him in case Marsch (or whichever centre-mid) gets injured. The rest of the back-ups are just appalling!

I say give Veronin a decent run in the team and see what happens from there!! Whose bright idea was it to sign that guy anyway…..
