Full Time: Liverpool 2, Birmingham 2
By: Ed | November 9th, 2009
To recap:
* David Ngog opened the scoring with a stunning volley from six yards after some good Liverpool pressure.
* Liverpool concede the equalizer from a set-piece: Brum get three headers in the box, the last by Chucho Benitez past Pepe Reina.
* Albert Riera aggravated his hamstring injury (again) and had to come off…enter Steven Gerrard.
* Cameron Jerome threw his hat in the ring for goal of the season, beating Pepe Reina from fully thirty yards. Out of nothing really.
* Liverpool have spent nearly the entire second half on the offensive, and get their chance at an equalizer when David Ngog flops down in the box (see banner picture). If he’s looking for the penalty there, as opposed to avoiding Carsely, it’s shameful, shameful stuff.
* Gerrard beats Joe Hart for the equalizer, 2-2.
* It’s Benayoun’s turn to come off injured, hamstring for him as well.
* Aquilani makes his Anfield debut in the 82nd minute as Liverpool search for the equalizer. Nervy stuff.
* Liverpool can’t find a way through, and at the full-time whistle it’s Liverpool 2, Birmingham 2. Not the result anyone would have wanted.

How does it feel to get the point after such a ridiculous dive? No seriously, is it better to have anything won by a cheat or you’d prefer fair nothing? Sure, the spirit was great but you know…

Yikes, tough result for you guys. I hate to pile on, but that dive was pretty bad–at least as bad as the dive Eduardo took against Celtic, in my opinion. I wonder if there will be the same media outcry? (Just kidding, I don’t really wonder, because there won’t be…)

And here I was thinking fair play to myself for calling it shameful and running it as the banner picture, but apparently not enough. I’ll let you know when I track down David Ngog and beat the point out of him.

No, no–full credit to you, Ed, for posting that. Nothing is more maddening than when clubs get a result through something like this and some bloggers on this site either outright deny it or just pretend it didn’t happen. And the bottom line is that as bad as they are, every team has these incidents, and it puts you as a blogger in a tough spot.
I’m just still a bit touchy because when an Arsenal player dives, apparently UEFA has to get involved and try to ban the player, but people generally just shrug it off when other clubs’ players do it. And I think the penalty is going to be the big talking point from the game.

Sad to say I agree that it’ll be the main talking point. I had actually marveled at Ngog to that point-his volley was brilliant, he tracked back wonderfully, and he showed intelligence in his runs. With that dive he pretty much wiped away the memory of what would have otherwise been a great run-out. If I’m honest I think the Premier League should take action. I think this is a chance to emphasize to a young player that diving will not be tolerated. Ngog seems to have a future ahead of him at Anfield, and that type of display is the last thing I want to cheer.
Relatedly, it’s also a shame that about five minutes after the Ngog incident Gerrard acted similarly on a challenge from Bowyer. That was waved off, but very well could have been rewarded as well. Not a real strong period for Liverpool’s integrity there.

I’m still thinking about Glen Johnson’s backheeled cross. That thing defied the laws of physics.

Johnson got more luck with Ridgewell than Wright-Phillips did last week.

What a waste of money

More injuries just what the team needed! Something needs to change quickly or Liverpool are going to be struggling for a Europa League spot never mind Champions League spot

liverpool have never had integrity Ed. gerrard has been diving for years and still does. torres dives, riera dives, reina dives, mascherano dives (constantly). alonso use to dive every single match. its absolutely pathetic. your club is a disgrace to the sport. hows that 20 year wait for a title going?.. wankas..

Insightful stuff as usual zach. Carries extra weight coming from a Chelsea supporter, who’s never had a player dive or make a meal of a tackle. That’s integrity. What else can I expect, though, coming off such brilliant quotes as, “good luck making europe league guys. you’re gunna need it” and “you’ll never walk alone is a celtic song, liverpool copied it. cant do anything original.” Breathtaking.

seeing both Zach and that hatchet man Lee Carsley attempt to take the moral high ground is about as convincing as Ngogs dive .. it just ain’t working .. stay classy ..
