Sadness … Just utter, total sadness
By: Jim | January 10th, 2007There’s not much to say about losing 6-3 to Arsenal in the Carling Cup. Being unable to watch the match from Milwaukee, I was forced to settle for the papers’ accounts, which, not surprisingly, were unkind to Liverpool. Liverpool Offside is taking a couple days for a short, personal vacation to Chicago to see a hockey game, of all things. Now is a good time for meditation and reflection. Think about Istanbul and not Baptista. Focus on The Gerrard Final and not Arsene Wenger. Let’s collect ourselves and move on. There’s something called “Barcelona” in about five weeks, so it’s time to prepare for the next challenge. Perhaps some sort of sci-fi brain cleansing is in order to reach the right frame of mind.

Well, I watched the match and was apalled at the officiating which was clearly in Arsenal’s favor. If the first goal was not offside than not only should Guthrie’s goal been allowed but Bellamy was called offside twice and shouldn’t have. Also, Song’s goal was clearly a handball, intentional or not, it was a judgement call, and like I said the ref was not looking to call a fair match today. Futhermore, the fourth Arsenal goal, Baptista’s second, I believe, was clearly offside, no doubt. Finally, if Gilberto’s two-footed, actual contact made slide tackle in the box was not a penalty in the first game, but a dive, how in God’s name is Hyypia’s clear contact with the ball ONLY one? Aliadiere should have received a yellow for that, one of many yellows that should have been distributed for the obscene amount of overly aggressive, unneccessary display by Arsenal. I’m wondering if the little incident where the boys were using the official as target practice affected the decisions made by the ref and the linesman, wouldn’t surprise me.

I live for the day when Liverpool finds a goalkeeper that knows what the hell he’s doing. Positioning on the first free kick goal was abysmal. Naturally, the defending in front of him left a lot to be desired as well, but Dudek can’t keep dining out on Istanbul.

The largest tactical problem was because of lack of a holding midfielder something we dont have now that Sissoko is out.
The Palleta and Hyppia combination was also a joke against Baptista and Aliadere, they were just too fast and the last goal was testament to this. As for Dudek, we regret the sale of Kirkland for surely he just wasn’t interested in playing.
When a team has slow defenders, a holding midfielder is important to assist in defensive duties and this is also why we lost in the FA cup game. It makes me miss Hamaan even more and we need Sissoko now more than ever. The Chelsea game cannot come at a worse moment.Posted from
