Roy Hodgson Out, Kenny Dalglish In

By: Ed | January 8th, 2011

Well good morning.

From the official site:

Liverpool FC confirmed today that manager Roy Hodgson has left the club by mutual consent.

Principal Owner John Henry commented: “We are grateful for Roy’s efforts over the past six months, but both parties thought it in the best interests of the club that he stand down from his position as team manager. We wish him all the best for the future.”

Roy Hodgson said: “Being asked to manage Liverpool Football Club was a great privilege. Any manager would be honoured to manage a club with such an incredible history, such embedded tradition and such an amazing set of fans. Liverpool is one of the great clubs in world football. I have, however, found the last few months some of the most challenging of my career. I am very sad not to have been able to put my stamp on the squad, to be given the time to bring new players into the club in this transfer window and to have been able to be part of the rebuilding process at Liverpool. The club has some great, world-class players, with whom it has been a pleasure to work and I wish the entire squad well for the rest of the season. I thank those with whom I have built up a close working relationship at the club for their loyalty and support during very testing times, and finally of course to the Liverpool fans, your passion and dedication to the club will see Liverpool at the top of the game once more.”

Club legend Kenny Dalglish will assume control of team matters for Sunday’s third round FA Cup tie against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Henry added: “We are delighted that Kenny Dalglish has agreed to step in and manage the team for Sunday’s FA Cup tie at Old Trafford and for the remainder of the season.

“Kenny was not just a legendary footballer, he was the third of our three most successful managers – three giants. We are extraordinarily fortunate and grateful that he has decided to step in during the middle of this season.”

Chairman Tom Werner said: “No one who cares for this great club has been happy with the way this season has unfolded and we have examined options and considered at length what is best for us going forward. Kenny will bring considerable experience to the position and provide management and leadership for the rest of the season.”

Great news—this doesn’t immediately change things or fix the problems the squad has had, but I think it does quite a bit for changing the atmosphere around the club. The immediate response seems to be one of optimism and relief despite what’s sure to be a media indictment of supporters, but, you know, the media can fuck off. Liverpool needed this.

I’d guess Noel will be around with some thoughts in a bit, so I’m going to schedule the United preview to go up later on in the day. I’d like to hang out all day and revel in the goodness, but I’ve got a birthing class to attend. When I pass out during the video portion, I’ll at least be able to come to mumbling “Dalglish.” Priorities.

Welcome back, Kenny.

    The King has returned!

I think Kenny Dalgleish was a fantastic player although he never played well for his country, but sometimes they do not always make the best managers. If you look at the great managers they were normally middle of the road players. I hope for Liverpool's sake that he does a good job, however there is a real problem in English football at the moment which was evident at the World Cup. Who won the World Cup - Spain and why do you think that happened. I think it was because in Spain the clubs are made up of Spanish players with team spirit and not made up of foreign players who are there just for the money. Like I said before this is the malaise of English football. I can remember 25 years ago when it all started that someone said we were making a rod for our own back and would you believe it it has come true. Cut Carragher or Gerrard in half and it would read Liverpool everyone else it would be pound notes. No longer is there playing for the shirt just money, money, money.

Let's be clear, the abuse of Roy Hodgson is so far removed from the respectful behaviour normally associated with LFC fans as to be unacceptable under normal circumstances and reprehensible at all times. Howeever, as one who was vocal in my dismay at how the man conducted himself and the affairs of our proud club, i must say that A GREAT DEAL of criticism and disillusionment was more than warranted. Roy had his chance, despite the bleatings of his london-centric media buddies that the pooor dear was in need of time and the myth they fostered that the squad was so poor that struggle was inevitable. This nonsense is now, thankfully, behind us and hodgson's inept tenure with it. We deserved better. LFC deserved better. In the warm glow of the King's appointment let's not lose sight of what was actually happening and how rappid the decline under Roy was. The best thing about coming on here is that you could read honest appraisals from proper redmen and women. I salute the return of the only real hero i've ever had. Better late than never. Welcome back Kenny.

  • ThatKrazyKlose

Well thats a shame, here I thought momentarily Bayern Munich might be able to snatch up Torres from you guys. Its good to hear hodgsons out though, A club of Liverpool's standing and history deserves better.

Get a grip Liverpool you had it in the past but not at the moment. Hard as it may be to swallow all clubs have their day but yours has gone for the moment. Like all clubs they are full of prima donas who think they have the god given right to be paid vast amounts of money to kick a ball about the park. Wake up and smell the coffee and think about paying paying the right amount for the job. Football generally has gone down the toilet and playing for your local team is not good enouigha any more. This means there is no spirit just money as the bee all and end all-so so sad,

    WOO HOOOOOOO!!!!!!

I know it's wrong on some levels to rejoice at the departure of a Liverpool manager. But I have apologies for doing so.

At first when he came in I had doubts but I thought he's a good guy and maybe he could do a good job.
Later it became "nice guy, wrong job".
And then as time progressed and he revealed his character throwing players, predecessors, fans under the bus, fabricating excuses, even that "nice guy" part went away.

  • Well, that came out of nowhere when it did finally happen.

  • Baldrick

This is just what the club needs. Woy was never the answer and I am glad that FSG have taken on board the fans' desire to see King Kenny back at the helm. These will be interesting times but hopefully he will be given the funds to turn things around because there is no doubt that things do need changing and the entire blame cannot be left on Woy's doorstep. He was just the wrong answer to a difficult question made by a bunch of bloody numpties.

I feel sorry for the bloke but he knew the position when he walked in the front door and although he didn't deserve some of the vitriol (chips n' all) he had given it his best and that was not good enough; it was time for him to go. Not the Liverpool Way but hopefully this will be the exception rather than the norm from now on.

Man Utd next. You just couldn't make it up... c'mon you Reds!!

I'm still having trouble believing it. This is what I wanted to happen, so badly, but I never really thought it would. It's a great day for Liverpool. Thank you, FSG!

  • It was twisted and toxic with Roy. I am sure he is a nice guy and all that and nice guys shouldn't be treated in this manner but there were no signs of Liverpool moving forward, only regressing.

I hope he finds great success in his next venture.

  • kenobi

Is this for real is it true?

  • Tawfiq

So true about not seeing immediate improvement and we might read tomorrow that Dalglish lost his first match and stuff like that, which is not so off the reality we've seen so far. But then again facts and simple fan emotions and belief arent to be ignored. Fans now-a-days are more educated and more interested in football then before. You can see clearly that Roy is a very nice man and I would be honored to know him on a personal level, but sorry I wont be happy to see him manage a top flight English club. Simply because of his history and stats, while I would put a man like Kenny is the hot seat simply for his passion and record at the club. At least now Kenny is the fans choice and we are happy with it.. Im not going to set high hopes but I will be supporting stronger than before. YNWA, congratulations for a historic day which allowed us to see a legend back to were he belongs. WALK ON KENNY WE ARE WITH YOU FOR BETTER & FOR WORSE.

  • Pyro

HELL YES! I woke up and checked BS.com. I have haven't been so happy about the manager of my club being sacked

  • LFC FAN

For first time, i am ashamed of Liverpool supporters or at least a group of them. I will tell at the end of this reply why.
First I have to explain that I was and am a defender of Benitez, once he went, i wanted Dalgish as his sucessor and I was not keen on Hodgson. however I thoguht that Hodgson was our manager and we should support him.
I also agree that Hodgson made many mistakes since he got here. however sacking our manager after just 6 months was in my opinion agaisnt all liverpool ethics. I was angry and upset when Kop booed him after Wolves game.
Now I want to tell you why I felt ashamed of some of liverpool fans. My son went to takeaway chippy in Aighburth few nights ago and he told me that Hodgson walked in. he told me that some of the youth in there started throwing chips at him and started giving him abuse. Hodgson seemed very upset and walked out the chippy.
we liverpool fans used to pride ourself on how we treated our former palyers and managers and club servants.however now we come to this.
sacking a manager after six months when that manager had hardly any time or money to spend on players is wrong but treating someone who was associated with our great club and he has tried his best for the club this way, is shameful.

  • Rosco

I assume it has never occurred to you these youths could just as easily belong to the blue half of Liverpool?

  • Tawfiq

You summed it up LFC Fan and I thank you for the true liverpool fan mentality we knew since the 80s, I hate to see Roy treated bad as its not his fault all 100% that he lost the fans but he was a bad choice from the directors at the time, sorry to say, BUT treating him bad is TOTALLY UN ACCEPTABLE BY ANY MEANS POSSIBLE. He is a recognised gentleman and we wish him all the best hope to see him happy in his life.

  • CharlieFineman

Well, that's just youth being youth I guess. They could've done the same thing to anyone. When your club is in a steady decline, and the manager just adds to it, last thing you want to think about is club ethics. Rafa showed what you can do if you manage the players properly. Roy showed erm, nothing.
I'm happy for you guys, hope Dalglish turns out to be good, despite the short term!

  • Emmychow

I think we as fans have given Hogson our support from the beginning. I think he lost us, not we lost him. I agree we need to support our managers, but Hogson wasn't Liverpool material. He wasn't Liverpool anything. It was obvious from his tactics and the way he tried to blame everything else instead of battling for the club, that his association with the club should come to an end. But I must say, that disrespecting him is truely wrong, especially if he's just trying to get a bite. Hogson should at least be allowed to move around the mersey without being hated. He was afterall, just trying to do a job.

  • LFC4LIFE

I disagree.the throwing chips part was essential to save the club from hodgson.hodgson preferred to play players like konchesky above aurelio or agger.he even chose n'gog over more experienced players with striking ability like Cole/Jovanovic/Babel/Kuyt/Gerrard.hell i'd even play maxi as second striker.Ps. Jovanovic IS a striker. With this kind of mentalily we(the technical, smart, and REAL fans) only had one choice.we prefer chips over n'gog/konchesky/poulsen and losing games.i'm not saying that n'gog is bad but he is inexperienced and not liverpool level. It's true he's learning and needs chances but NOT WHEN WE ARE LOSING EVERY OTHER GAME

  • Rosco

    Long live the battered potato!

  • LFC FAN

well, just read Thompson in Gaurdian article saying
"Six months is not long enough, not just for Liverpool but for all managers," Thompson said. "Everybody should have a chance. What we've seen at Liverpool in the last month has been unprecedented, unparalleled in the way the fans have turned. Even in the dark days of Graeme Souness's reign, there were no universal chants for Graeme to go.

"Liverpool fans felt as though we were different, we don't do things like that, we stick together and we stick with the club. Now the fans had even started taking the mickey out of their own manager, chanting 'You're getting sacked in the morning'. That is incredible."

  • LFC4LIFE

the facts are still there.he chooses an infamous n'gog over international and class players like babel/kuyt/jovanovic/Cole.enough said.

  • McrRed

Just remind us of the top scorers this season? Ngog ain't the finished article but the boy can play. Come on, support the development of youth at our great club.

  • lfc4eternity

All that shows i'm afraid is that Thommo has his 'rent a quote' hat on in case he's called back into the fray and that, WE (bold and underlined and in italics!) do stick together and stick with the club...pretty much all of us (and that surely does constitute a 'WE') stood by our team and club and knew that our beloved LFC needed RH to go if things were to improve....does that not show true loyalty and not just blind faith?

  • Rosco

    Well said that man

  • lfc4eternity

Where I can agree that the abuse in the chippy is totally uncalled for and those who did this should be ashamed. I equally have to point out that RH although not welcomed with open arms was supported until the mistakes he continued to make that you mention.
As for suggesting that it's aginst Liverpool ethics...I'm sorry but Liverpool of old would not have appointed him in the first place, the same Liverpool who've never won the Prem.
We must stop dwelling on the past...I want us to be as successful as the next supporter, but we're beginnning to sound like Newcastle fans!!, the REAL difference is that we ARE a big club, we need the players to be big, the manager to be big (RH was not!) and supporters to be big.
Take pride that we are moving forward, take pride in the fact that before it's too late, action was taken...don't abuse the man but recognise that his best was woefull
