Remembering the 96
By: Ed | April 14th, 2009Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster, April 15, 1989, a day that saw 96 Liverpool supporters lose their lives at the FA Cup semi-final. Reds across the world unite today to remember the lives lost that day.
The official club website is offering free LFCTV all day to follow the special services. The service at Anfield starts at 9:30am EST and will be televised, but there are other programs available as well. Full schedule here.
Yesterday was a proud day for Liverpool FC–the result was not ideal, but the spirit of the club shone through. A day like today is a sad one, but also a day of pride for the strength of a football club that does so much for its supporters on and off the pitch.

The memorial is quite moving. Some pictures:

I remember the pictures in the local paper. I was 13 at the time and knew very little about soccer, but this wasn’t a sports story. This was tragedy on a larger scale. I am glad to see the continued remembrance of all involved.
“Rafael Benitez has urged Liverpool fans all over the world to buy the brand new ’Fields of Anfield Road’ single – which was released on April 6 to help raise awareness of the Hillsborough disaster.”

I hate Steven Cohen…
http://www.epltalk.com/steven-cohen-blames-liverpool-fans-for-hillsborough-disaster/5915What a god damn wanker… It hurts me that he really is the most prominent voice of football in America… sigh…

Saw that the other day too Taylor…I guess he backed off a little but would not apologize. I personally have never heard shit else that he’s said, but I tend not to watch FSC unless Liverpool are playing and I don’t have Sirius. Really disappointing, particularly when it’s so easy for passive fans stateside to believe whatever they hear. In sum, he’s an asshole. Good work by the Gaffer, though.
