Official: Sebastian Coates Signs, Christian Poulsen Departs

By: Noel | August 30th, 2011

Sebastian Coates signs with Liverpool:

We gave you the full overview of Liverpool’s imposing new defender on Friday, but issues with securing the work permit and that Nacional representatives flew to England to complete the deal delayed his official signing. An hour ago, Uruguayan sources with contacts in the Coates camp announced he had signed and was having his picture taken with a Liverpool shirt, and thirty minutes later Luis Suarez beat the official site to the punch by announcing on Twitter and Facebook that his friend Coates had indeed signed before quickly realising it hadn’t been officially announced yet and taking it down. Nonetheless, the wait is now over: Coates has signed for Liverpool.

Transfer agreed for Christian Poulsen:

As discussed in today’s edition of Rumour Mongering amongst talk of Raul Meireles to Chelsea and Neymar to Liverpool, Christian Poulsen’s most likely destination had become France after surprise interest from Evian Thonon Gaillard FC. Now, the club has officially announced that a transfer has been agreed with the newly promoted side, with Poulsen expected to take a heavy wage cut in order to ensure first team football after being dropped from the Danish national team by Morten Olsen.

While we wait for more transfer news…

All eyes to the skies, there'll be a Babelcopter up there somewhere!

  • Suarez from the car park...

    It's in for Bellamy!!

  • lfc80uk

I hope the Christan Poulson deal goes through and they do actually sign him. I would hate for his new club to bottle it....

  • THANK GOD that Poulsen is gone.  Seriously.  This time last year, my eyes were being assaulted by the "most dreadful central midfield partnership of all time," featuring Poulsen.  Now, well... Let's just say that he won't be missed.  At all.

  • NotTooXabi

So who is going to be the asshole who drops some Winston Wolf knowledge on this "I can't believe this is the same car" happy happy joy joy time: http://youtu.be/QYchlSj6YSc?t=...

    And yes, Comolli is Jules.

The finest centre back in South America for 7mil. That is an amazing piece of business. While I was skeptical at first (wasn't a fan I'd the Adam transfer, preferred Mata to Downing), this has been quite possibly the club's finest transfer window in the Premier League era.

Looking back on how much the club has improved from just 12 months ago is truly mind boggling. Almost as quick as the club's quick rot. It may have been the worst period in our football supporting lives, but it will make us appreciate the at times inevitable-looking march to silverware. Long may it continue.

  • Tropics Reds

There's still the question of the pace of the EPL; I am not intentionally putting the dampeners on the transfer, simply highlighting that he has been scouted before and no big club has come in for him. That might simply be a timing issue, but there has been questions raised about his pace. Hopefully like a certain Mr Hyypia, he won't need it due to his execptional reading of the game.

  • Suarez from the car park...

his debut game at 17, he got Man of the Match and has been a permanent fixture in the Sth American Champions League and the Uruguay international scene.

    He'll be fine.

  • I honestly don't believe that that's a question at all. Aquilani, Meireles and Suarez all fit in seamlessly and instantly with the supposedly superhuman pace of the Premier League, with the obvious asterisk by Aquilani's name for his ankle injury. I think the question is the big step up from Nacional to Liverpool, hoping he won't be a small fish in a giant ocean for too long.

  • Tropics Reds

I hope your right; its just the reports talk about his lack of pace and with Uruguay playing a deeper defensive line etc

Although Enrique was earmarked as not having much pace either, so it just goes to show you...

  • The lack of pace thing came from a celebrity scout in Scandinavia who may know his shit but wasn't tracking Coates especially closely by all accounts. Everybody else seems to say his pace is really pretty decent/better than average given he's a gangly motherfucker, which is what I thought I saw when we spent way too much time covering the Copa here.

  • Suarez from the car park...

and it's full backs that need the pace more than centre backs.  Centre backs need to read the game better otherwise Hyppia would have been Nick the Greek v1.

  • Tropics Reds

pretty decent/better than average is  reassuring!

  • KC

He's 20 as well so he still has plenty of time to develop. I don't know whether pace can be developed but I'm sure he can develop other strengths to lessen his weaknesses :D

  • Walid is me, I lent my laptop to my brother and he left his twitter logged in... will be checking that every time before posting from now on!

The best signing we've made in recent time has still got to be Kenny Dalglish.

Who knew this much could change in so little time?

Really like how the squad is shaping up in terms of balance (left footer/right footer) and personalities. Perhaps more importantly is how good the relationship of the players are with one another, with the staff as well as the relationship of the staff & owners with the fans.

We're bringing in players who really want to play for the club, shipping out players who are surplus and usual suspects for negative influence within the club itself.

In an entirety, the club is at its most harmonious and healthy state since I can remember and this is the very platform that could create a legacy, a successful one.

  • Ryan

When I first read your post, I thought you were referring to when we signed Dalglish back in 1977. And still, your statement remains. Best signing we ever made was Dalglish back in 1977. Who would have thought that we were actually signing our best player in our history, and (soon to be) most successful manager? 10 bucks says Paisley knew all this when he signed him.

  • tGryffin

Mabye a back-up defensive midfielder and a winger/striker would do the trick. If Lucas goes down we will have to have, 1. Gerrard+Adam? 2. Adam + Spearing? 3. Miereles+ Adam? none of those look defensively viable.

  • Suarez from the car park...

Defence?  We don't need no damn defence, 90mins of pure flowing attack attack attack with the crowd blowing the roof off the stadium.
Lucas can clean up for us.  Rock on!

  • Tropics Reds

Maybe Conor Coady stepping up this year rather than spending money on someone who's going to be sitting on the bench?

Re winger/striker, with Carroll/Suarez/Kuyt/Ngog, it would be nice to see a right winger who can operate as a forward & on the other wing as well i.e. Pedro of Barcelona.

Hulk springs to mind? Perhaps Eden Hazard although more of a Wing/Attacking midfielder.
Gervinho would have beena pretty good fit for that position I reckon. That sort of player anyway.

  • Ryan

Damn I forgot that Noel does machine-gun posts.

I feel bad for Suarez. The way Coates talks about him and being Uruguayan, sounds like Suarez is going to have a puppy dog following him around every time he goes out. How is he gonna hook up with those Merseyside girls with a 6 foot 5 wingman??

Anyways. So glad we didn't wait until the last 24 hours to sign everybody, like Arsenal. The striker position seems a little bit weak at the moment, how would you guys feel about getting an old, proven veteran to put in a season or two? I doubt it'll happen, Henry and co. were quick and efficient with the signings this summer, not letting anything get in their way...

  • CheekyFellow

    "Machine-gun posts" lol

  • NotTooXabi

"hook up with those Merseyside girls" ... um... have you seen la esposa del pistolero? Have you been to Liverpool?

  • Zach

oh yeah Suarez's woman is not too xabi either.

  • Ryan

Ok fine, "hook up with Liverpool's finest imports"...?

  • Tom Foolery

Not sure how the "I'm looking for Nipsy" clip applies...wait, quick and efficient signings. Nothing is more quick and efficient with business then Black Dynamite, except for John Henry of course.

  • Ryan

Glad to see someone caught my drift.

  • Suarez from the car park...

this is well good man!  I'm sitting here watching a truly awful piece of hollywood alien shite called DreamCatcher and as the aliens go up in flames I hear that Poulsen is on his way!  Such truisms always have a parallel.

Man they've done well to clear out just about everyone bar Degen, even if Cole is only on loan.

A streamlined squad of the right players.

What of this rumour that Kenny is after Corluka and Kranjcar from the Spuds?

Do we need another winger?  Do we need another striker, a young gun?  Or is Kuyt the 3rd striker while we bring on Stirling?

  • Tropics Reds

A right winger (pacey & skillful) who can operate on the other flank and centrally would be good.

Definately time to bring on the youth slowly to get them some experience though.... Sterling and Coady to be in the squad like Wilson, Flanno and Robbo were last year.

  • Suarez from the car park...

    >> A right winger (pacey & skillful) who can operate on the other flank and centrally would be good.
    You mean Gerrard then?

  • Tropics Reds

No, I mean a winger, like a Ribery/Ronaldo type player - a different skillset than what we have in Hendo and Stevie.

Especially with Ngog gone, someone who can also fill the void as a striker too.

  • Tom Foolery

I hope you're watching the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version of Dream Catcher. They rip it to shreds, just as any sarcasm-rich cynic would.

  • ChrisLFC

Kelly-Agger-Coates-Enrique-Carra-Johnson-Skrtel-Wilson-Flanno-Robinson  Our defense is as deep as our midfield now.  Another guy up top to add depth there would be the cherry on top of this transfer season...  Even if that doesn't happen, it's still a great window.

  • Tropics Reds

With injuries to Johnson and Kelly , do we need to keep hold of Degen this window?

  • Geza

In all fairness, playing with 10 man is better than playing with 11 and Deggen as right full-back...

  • Tropics Reds

    lol

  • brother jon

great window indeed! does this mean DC gets to kick back til January? AFTER he's brought in that last piece - Afellay!
in a year or two, that back four (j/k,a,c,e) could be effing famous. not quite Dalglish famous but...

  • Zach

aye afellay would be sweet bit of buisness as he adds some pace and after spending time with barca he'll know how to pass and move!

  • Can't wait to see him playing in a red shirt. Good day today. Coates finally signing and Poulsen leaving at last. Hopefully, we'll get rid of Joe Cole tomorrow. Certainly the most fruitful transfer window since I started following Liverpool.

  • Andy1892

What a feckin brilliant transfer window! My hopes for the last day of the window is:
Brad Jones, Joe Cole, N'Gog and Degen out, and a good backup striker in, not too old but not too young either... And as much like Suarez as possible :p Top 4 here we come!
    YNWA

  • Tropics Reds

Jones may stay as we'd need a 3rd keeper if the 2 youngsters have been loaned out - Gulacsi and Hansen.

  • Red2death

Kinda hoping Ngog stays.  Young, hardworking, and still has loads of potential.  22-yrs-old and already has 3 years of premiership experience.  Hasn't made a big impact yet, but always shows flashes that he could become a very good player.  The kind of kid that FSG wants to buy, not sell.

Of course I'm in the minority on this one though.

  • Tropics Reds

There's always a nee jerk reaction to players that dopn't quite make the grade, but there's no point selling him to bring in another prospect unless you are going to give that prospect time on the park. He may as well be kept and brought on when we can to see if he fits in with the new regime. If not, loan him out and get some money for him and start again or buy a more adaptable player that can operate in a couple of positions so they're not just competeing for 1 place.

  • Andy1892

You've got a point. Maybe he should've been loaned out instead.

  • RwandanRed

Good luck Christian. All this was none of your fault. Your only wrong was being namesakes with our then managing director! Wait, that's not why he was signed? Well then why on earth was he? Oh, some one has just reminded me we had a mad man for a manager at the time!!!

  • Suarez from the car park...

I always thought c5nting owl face was quite apt, when I'm in my less than charitable mood.

  • Now if only we can ship Degen on...

  • NotTooXabi

Isn't he on tour with his crap band, Blink 182?

    Would explain a few things....

  • Zach

This bit of news brought a tear to my eye when I read this today... now only if Lille are really taking J. Cole on Loan then I'll be the happiest lil man in Ohio...

  • poorscouserbobby

I know what could make you Happier.

  • KC

Well supposedly Joe Cole leaving means that we get first refusal of Eden Hazard next year. Whether that's a rumour or not, that made me happy :)

  • Ravenilli

Lille have confirmed this to only be a rumour and Joe Cole has signed a 1 year loan with them.

  • Suarez from the car park...

would you two like some privacy?

  • Zach

are you saying that cause your curious?

  • Suarez from the car park...

no, cos I'm a smart ass.
