More on Fowler to MLS & Eto’o coming to Liverpool
By: Brian | February 28th, 2007According to Fowler’s agent via the BBC, Fowler desires a contract renewal and that the New England Revolution, specifically Steve Nicol, has not spoken with his client, nor if they did, he doubts they would be able to afford him. Hmmm, not be able to afford him? How much does a 31-year-old rarely used striker cost these days? I don’t see very many other teams lining up to sign him. I guess he could go to Dubai or Qatar, like the article mentions, but what good will that do him? Might as well sign with Macclesfield Town and play for Ince.
We really, really, really, really, really want Eto’o. All those links are to articles that basically reiterate that. It would be a dream move for us and a nightmare for every other team in Europe. Will it happen though?

Have the new owners given any indication what their spending habits will be? Eto’o won’t come with a cheap price tag.

Well, if you believe what Moores, Parry, and Benitez are saying about their meetings with Gillett and Hicks, then the funds will be there for whomever we desire/need. I’m playing the “I’ll believe it when I see it” game. Eto’o would be a nice way to instill confidence into the fanbase.

I’d be so mad if management at Barca were stupid enough to let Eto’o go, but if relations are really unsavagable I can’t imagine anything less than a 30 million euro price tag. For my money, he’s the best striker in Europe, and I think he would suit Liverpool’s style.

30 million euros would be a fair deal for Eto’o who is the best striker in Europe when fit. And Liverpool just don’t have an Henry, a Drogba, or a Rooney (?)…
As importantly. in one stroke it would signal to Liverpool’s EPL rivals that the new owners are serious about success. Remember their current record signing has been £14m for Cissè.
Liverpool don’t need to repeat the Chelski “Roman’s billions” strategy - their team is almost complete. Eto’o and a left winger would be the icing on the cake.

I think this is exactly my hope out of the new ownership. Use the money to compliment a team that already has chemistry and character, not to completely rehaul it. There is something to be said about the way a team that is organically composed - rather than a team put together by money alone - consistently produces. Liverpool doesn’t need to go the route of Real Madrid or the New York Yankees, and hopefully the ownership will be smart about its money.
