Liverpool:

Reina
Kelly Carragher Agger Enrique
Lucas Adam
Kuyt Henderson Downing
Carroll

Bench: Doni, Flanagan, Skrtel, Spearing, Meireles, Maxi, Suarez

Two of the expected additions happen—Dirk Kuyt and Martin Kelly make their way back into the starting eleven, but it ends up being Kelly for Flanagan and Kuyt for Luis Suarez. Given how quickly the Uruguayan tired last week, and that he was lacking in the bursts that we grew accustomed to, a rest isn’t the worst thing in the world. Probably would have chosen a break for him last week rather than this, but he’s still available and could see meaningful minutes. Jordan Henderson gets another start, keeping Raul Meireles and Maxi on the bench. Charlie Adam and Lucas again partner in central midfield, with Henderson and Stewart Downing wide and Andy Carroll and Dirk Kuyt up top. For the second consecutive week, Fabio Aurelio misses out on the squad entirely.

Arsenal:

Szczesny
Sagna Vermaelen Koscielny Jenkinson
Frimpong Ramsey
Walcott Arshavin Nasri
van Persie

Bench: Fabianski, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ryo, Miquel, Chamakh, Lansbury, Bendtner

I'm going to temper expectations until we play at top 6 side.

Really excited to see Johnson and Gerrard in this side. How solid do Agger -Enrique - Downing on the left look so far? Wow. You add a ball-playing CB (Hoofing Carra is really frustrating) to Kelly, Johnson/Kuyt to the right side...

Anyone else notice Carroll lounging around the back post when the ball was worked up the field? If we need to move away from the lumping, the Last Samurai needs to check to ball better. (Of course, I could be way off...I had nachos for breakfast.)

Full credit to Vermalen who was incredible today. How good would he and Agger be as a CB pairing? (Hint for FSG next summer)

  • they would be injured

  • JPR

An away win at the Arsenal  against a 10 man Arsenal reserve team is still an away win at the Arsenal. I think. Slow start is now a barn burner. Pl. hurry back Stevie G.

  • poorscouserbobby

Good win for Liverpool.  The first goal was very lucky, Suarez was a step offside... barely, but indeed off.  These misses have cost Liverpool going the other way, it's what happens you deal with it.  Very unlucky for the young defender who made a good play but rambo got in the way.  Shit happens.  Suarez indeed changed the game, he made that play even close, and of course he started and finished our second goal.   For being not completely fit, and maybe even a bit rusty, two goals in two games... I'll take that for the rest of the season.  One thing that bothered me:  We backed off Arsenal and let them dictate the game.  Towards the end of the first half and starting the second.  We can't do that against the better teams.  If Frimpong (who'd played very well) hadn't been stupid might have been a different result.  I'll take it, but Liverpool have a mans work ahead of them.

  • Gryffin

Anyone Notice Raul Miereles middle finger to the Arsne crowd after the 2nd goal? And then Suarez batted it down quickly? hah.

  • Ryan

I just had me a Frimpong for breakfast. mm mm good.

  • Ryan

dah fuck, stupid Disqus. I missed most of the discussion. Good result, for playing the way we were. Didn't like the Henderson inclusion. And by God, if Meireles is sold, he had better go for 50 million.

  • Suarez from the car park...

well apart from Ping-Pong going off, taking Carroll off means we're playing it on the ground and hey presto their defence has problems.

Hope KK noticed that.  70mins of trying to plant it on Carroll's head is not stretching their defences - and won't trouble most teams who will prepare for him.

  • Glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks that!

  • Lucas, Enrique, Suarez, Meireles all were dominant. Boy, an away win at Emirates makes up for a home tie against Sunderland.

  • Enrique looks like a signing and a half!

  • Suarez should start ahead of Carroll with Meireles behind him every week. Granted they were aided by the sending off, but the movement was so much more intelligent once they came on.

  • Red2death

Well, that was the easiest  game at the Emirates we'll ever get.  We could have been playing QPR.  Anyway, 3 points =)

  • Suarez from the car park...

    yep, 3 pts is gooooood.
feel for Van Persie I have to say.  He's a top striker and he's wondering where the guts of the team have gone.
Good save from Reina against their one chance.

  • CheekyFellow

Well, there's your depth. Instead of Poulsen and Shelvey off the bench, you get Suarez and Meireles.

  • Gryffin

    L O L. I'll take it. Ugly but a Goal is a Goal

  • CheekyFellow

    The A-team is on.

Edit: Turned away from the TV. I assumed they subbed Adam...

  • Guest

Adam played well IMO not super but well?

  • Ed

"Well" isn't the word I'm looking for.

  • To be fair, he wasn't quite as careless in possession as against Blackburn last year when he had 40-something percent passing. So depending on where you set that bar...

  • NotTooXabi

I recall Mascherano having to 'coach' Lucas quite a bit and do extra work to cover his lost moments. Seems Lucas is doing that now for Adam and Henderson when the play centrally. How off am I on this one?

  • Khaine

Quite possible, but Mash rushing to get into position for a challenge was likely a result of his rushing out of position to get into the previous challenge. Never missed the opportunity for a tackle, him, positioning be damned.

  • JPR

    Meireles for Adam.

  • Ryan

More defensive it seemed. I saw him doing a long of backwork with the fullbacks. I think his extra effort helped Enrique  have the great game that he had.

  • Walcott was an embarrassment

  • JPR

Enrique shut down Walcott 1 on 1 all day. Very impressed considering Walcotts speed. Had little to do with Adam. IMHO.

  • Khaine

He shut off the inside, forcing Walcott to Jose's stronger side. He did well. And Enrique is just a beast defensively.

  • CheekyFellow

    Yea definitely

  • Frimpong, him gone

  • Red2death

This game is crying out for a creative sub.  Meireles, Maxi, Suarez.  Aquilani not even on the bench.

Arsenal are there for the taking today.

But if we stay this way, they do have the individual players that can nick it with one moment of magic.

  • Red2death

I'm glad Kenny was reading the Liverpool Offside on his iPhone.  Thanks Kenny.  We'll get a beer later.

  • CheekyFellow

Frimpong falls once again and gets the call easily - what. the. fuck.

  • Thom Hoppe

I got really excited when I saw Suarez, Maxi and Meireles warming up. Macca is a true pro

  • Suarez from the car park...

There's a goal in this game somewhere, just not sure where.

  • Ryan

AH there it is. It was on Aaron Ramsey's chest! took Suarez 10 minutes to find it.

  • Suarez from the car park...

there it was under my nose all the time!

  • Suarez from the car park...

Every move is about planting it on Carroll's head.  They need to take it further in so defenders have to look both sides of them and let Carroll pull the defenders around.
The early balls in are expected and the defender is ready for it.Adam's doing well.  Middle of the pitch is good, Kelly looks very good again.  Currently Carroll's head is the only game in town.  Not good.

  • Suarez from the car park...

I'm surprised Henderson is back in.  I have no problem with him being 3rd choice and bringing him on over a couple of seasons (bar the price) but he's not a starter against the big guys or the next tier.

  • poorscouserbobby

Liverpool haven't pressed the way the should have in the last 20 minutes.  I think a 55th minute sub of Suarez for Hendo will fix that.

  • Suarez from the car park...

Macca also commented on pool being a little off the pace.

  • wallsofsatan

i spent the last 25 minutes alternately screaming "PRESS UP YOU STUPID GITS" and "OH MY GOD FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING THAT IS HOLY MAKE THE SIMPLE PASS". I am now tired and may spend the second half on life support.

Ugh. Be still my heart, etc.

  • PDubz18

     First half thoughts:

    - Great on defense, we've barely let anything through except for a few crosses.

    - Carroll is getting the service, but Vermaelen really has been keeping him under wraps.

    - Henderson is playing a good game; he has tracked back on defense and kept the ball very well.

  • I agree about Henderson.  But it looks like no one else agrees

  • Ed

So a couple decent chances, mostly Arsenal towards the end, and I hate Frimpong. Nice half.

  • CheekyFellow

That name - Frim...pong. The name itself, pisses me off. Frim...pong.

  • Ed

The hair, the dive, the terrible challenges, the flipping off Lucas, his stupid face--it's all bad.

  • If some of these Carroll nudges on opponents rise to the level of a foul, then the nudges he receives should be taken up in the International Criminal Court

  • CheekyFellow

And none of those get yellows either...

  • I'm half expecting Carroll to be booked by healthy and safety regulators for not having a "Stay Off Top Rung" warning on him

  • Gryffin

Why can't ESPN cover every single Liverpool game? ( I know why - Sky and Fox) but its rather nice, isn't it?

  • JPR

Was hoping not to see Nasri. Will be fun to see whether the fans roast him, though. Yea, mostly Americans here.

  • Ryan

the Arsenal+Nasri and the Liverpool-Suarez factor is worrying. Well, I think I'm worrying. I might just be pissed off that someone gave Gary Neville a microphone.

  • I have it on a good source that Gary Neville looks like Bee Arthur's vagina

  • Gryffin

Gazzetta dello Sport is saying Alberto Aquaman is going to AC Milan for 7 mil... Not a penny less than 10 mil IMO.

  • Ryan

And so it begins. We are going to really regret that when we realise come January that we have few good attacking midfielders and lots of money still.

  • Nick

    No Suarez

  • Ryan

Seems Dalglish actually DOES read the offside, just my posts only...
