Manager for a Day: Who would you choose?

By: JRW | June 4th, 2008

With the silly season in full swing, I wanted to have everyone put on their fake Rafa mask for one second (the goateed or non-goateed version is up to you) and pretend that you’re in the Spaniard’s shoes.

We know Rafa was given a current budget of £20 million from Hicks and Gillett to use on summer signings, and so far, Rafa has splashed the cash (I use that term lightly) on free transfer Phillipp Degen. So for all we know the tranfer kitty is still full.

With all the transfer rumours flying around recently, I thought it would be interesting to see where everyone thinks Liverpool will end up when the summer is over.

My proposition to you is this: First, figure out who on the current squad will actually get moved this summer. I know we all like to hope and pray that Voronin has a valuation of £25 million, and that some team would pay. But to be honest, we both know he’s probably worth a couple pairs of boots and an old kit or two.

For instance: If you think Crouch is going to be sold this summer, figure out how much he would really go for on the open market, and then add that final transfer total to the current £20 million budget.

After you’ve figured out who is going this summer, then take the final transfer kitty (£20 + whoever you sell this summer) and figure out what your transfer budget will end up being, and who you’d realistically go after this summer (and how much you’d be willing to spend on each transfer target).

What I’m trying to figure out is, based on our current transfer funds, plus the money you get from selling players, do we really have a chance to bring in some top class talent this summer?

Could we really sign Quaresma, Bentley, Dossena and Barry? I think we can. But I’d like to see how you think Rafa can make it happen.

The Shopping List should be Quaresma, Jaoquin, Van Der Vaart and maybe David Villa if can afford it as well I think. I’m not convinced you need Barry, unless the intention is to play him at either LB, or LW. He certainly isn’t needed in the Defensive Midfield role he plays for Villa and England – even if you sell Alonso, Masch and Lucas can do a great job there, with Gerrard back there if needed. I’m not sure how I’d go about getting them, but it could be done if you sell a few players like Xabi Alonso and Peter Crouch.

Barry is being brought in, I feel, to fill a cm role. With the current formation with Gerrard as a second striker there is a lack of forward movement from midfield. Bringing in a player like Barry will ad strength in going forwards in supporting attacks and in returning to a more defensive role. I Benitez has realised that Alonso is expendable out of masch and Gerrard and could get a decent fee. I don’t think he will be missed to much. Lucas isn’t Ready yet for that responsibility.

Why is Klaas-Jan Huntelaar not on anybody’s list? I’m not even talking about this site, It’s everywhere, this lack of Huntelaar. Obviously nobody knows for sure, but I think KJH would do wonders in the Red attack, much more so than an overpriced Villa.

Also…sell Agger? Seriously? I can’t even begin to fathom that one.

    Crouch – 10m
    Voronin – 3m
    Pennant – 4m
    Carson – 7m
    Riise – 6m
    Alonso – 15m
    Yossi – 4m

    Total + 20m kitty = 60m

    Quaresma – 18m
    Riquelme – 6m
    Adriano – 5m
    Moutinho – 15m
    Santa Cruz – 10/15m

I really cant understand why Riquelme has not been touted about the big european clubs. The guy oozes pure class. Adriano has had his problems after his father died and he fell out with Mancini but the guy is still top quality and would be available on the cheap.

    What do you think??

    Transfer Out
    Crouch – £11 Million
    Riise – £6 Million
    Alonso – £16 Million
    Carson – £8 Million
    Pennant – £7 Million
    Finnan – £2 Million
    Voronin – £2 Million
    Itandje – £2.5 Million

That would bring us up to £54.5 Million Plus £13 Million left in the transfer kitty (Dossena was £7 Million) Thats £67.5 Million to shop around bring in another big name talent.

    Transfer In
Gareth Barry £13 Million (could be packaged with Crouch,Riise, or/and Carson)
David Bentley £11 Million (With Hughes gone from Blackburn, should be looking to leave)
Rafinha £12 Million (Degan may be good, but Rafinha is proven)
Quaresma £17 Million (Depending on his showing at the Euros his stock may rise)
Any veteran GK – £2-3 Million. Someone for back ups and Carling Cup.

In my wildest dreams I’d also add in someone like Berbatov, Huntelaar, or Villa to partner with Torres. Berbatov is great with the ball played to his fit and can assist as many goals as score them. With him likely departing Spurs maybe Rafa can work a deal for him. Huntelaar is a great prospect and could be a great addition to the squad. Villa would be a great partner for Torres and if it shows so during the Euros his stock will rise and be almost unaffordable for the team. But at the same time if he does well it would make Rafa salivate at the possibilities.

No way is Riquelme going anywhere. Once players go back to Boca, they retire there. It seems to happen with most of their really talented homegrowns- they start there, go overseas, then come back, play for 2-3 years, then retire.

Have you guys thought of Guiza from Mallorca? I think he would do great in the EPL, and as much as I would love to have him at Barca, he would excel with Gerrard feeding him through, as well as partnering with Torres.

Or, WE can pay YOU to take Gudjohnson.

That was hilarious Dave..are you from that Mourinho show???

Don’t know what I am doing here…a Utd fan…but I don’t really dislike the Pool (’cause of Rafa)..true!!.. but I think the reason Riquelme will not go anywhere is that you have to build a team around him…and for that any big team in Europe will have to make many changes ..apart from that he has a very big ego..something Barca and Villareal saw first hand! ..good luck this summer…We’ll still beat ya! :D
