Liverpool Agree Deal for Charlie Adam

From the official site:

Liverpool Football Club today announced they have reached agreement with Blackpool for the transfer of Charlie Adam.

The player will now travel to Merseyside for a medical and to discuss personal terms.

And with that, as well as a fee rumored to be in the range of £8 million, it seems that one of the summer’s longest running transfer sagas is finally at an end. Adam gets the move he apparently wanted, Liverpool get the man they were after since January, and, regardless of whether or not you’re an avid Charlie Adam fan, we all just sort of shrug our shoulders and say, “about fucking time.”

There’s two different levels to this transfer—the first is the impact that the ongoing rumors and reports had on the way we experience the transfer window, and the second is the impact that the player can have on this Liverpool squad. Noel’s already covered both in some amount of depth prior to the transfer (when discussing Conor Wickham for the first and Adam’s statistics for the second), but given that we actually have some news today, both are worth briefly revisiting.

**
The Charlie Adam transfer experience has, at least for me, been the transfer window’s shark-jumping moment. Yes, we’ve had drawn-out rumors of negotiations and stories of helicopters en route to London, but Adam’s twelve different medicals, Liverpool’s seven different offers, the four different modes of transportation Adam’s tried between Blackpool and Liverpool…it all proved to be one of the most consistently asinine transfer dealings in recent memory.

None were more guilty in the saga that the self-anointed “in-the-knows”, who took all the spotlight off the parties involved and placed it firmly on themselves. With each passing day their stories became more and more convoluted, and when nothing happened, we were treated to another twist and turn, none of which had much truth to it. The longer we waited, the more their tales became like a five-year-old trying to explain the juice stain on the carpet—there’s a point at which reality is irrelevant.

Now that he finally has signed, we’re likely to be exposed to a number of folks pronouncing their rightness and proclaiming that “deals take time.” I’d preach caution in falling back into the trap, though, as by the time this deal actually did become a reality, there wasn’t a football-following person who didn’t know something was coming. Thinking Liverpool were in for Charlie Adam and that a deal was possible didn’t mean you were in the know, it meant you had a pulse.

With a good chunk of the window left—a little less than two months—there’s plenty more to be stomached, with attentions shifting heavily to Stewart Downing and Aston Villa’s reported resistance to Liverpool’s approaches. And whether or not that happens, or deals for Juan Mata, Nolan Roux, Aaron Lennon, Santi Cazorla, and Jesus H. Christ are reached, I’m hesitant to care about any of it.

Not because there’s nobody I want to see arrive at Liverpool (there’s plenty), but because the transfer window’s become less about the players involved and more about glory-hunters spouting off to anyone who’ll listen.

**

There’s significantly less for me to add about Charlie Adam, as I think most of us are on the same page about what he brings to the squad. He’s got skill from set pieces that can, at times, be extraordinary, as can his range of passing and ability to drag a team along with him on the way to bigger and better things.

If we’re looking at the squad as a whole, though, I’m not convinced that he brings anything Liverpool are absolutely in need of. Sure, he’s left-footed and sprays passes at will, but as Noel pointed out after the player had his third medical of the summer in the middle of June, there’s a maddening inconsistency in that part of his game. And, when much of your reputation is built around that part, it’s worrying.

I also don’t know that he automatically lands ahead of anyone in Liverpool’s current midfield—plenty have been quick to hand him a place in the starting eleven over more proven, more consistent squad members like Raul Meireles and Lucas, which makes no sense if you’re actually paying attention. In my mind neither the Adam or Jordan Henderson signings should displace any of Liverpool’s best midfield last season; they both add depth and something slightly different, but not necessarily much that’s an immediate upgrade.

The best case scenario for all parties involved is that training and preparing at a higher level provides Adam with the type of structure that leads to performances that help Liverpool win football matches. He doesn’t have to be an instant first-teamer or the one to take the place of Lucas or Meireles or anyone else—he just needs to have a positive impact on the side when he’s called upon.

So we welcome Charlie Adam to Liverpool and wish him the best of luck, even if there’s varying opinions about his place in the squad. Let’s hope he’s one of the pieces that helps Liverpool move forward.

    Now that we have Adam..
WE need to go for Downing(and/or) Mata
and if Man city get Nasri then try for Adam Johnson/ James Milner
as for backup striker should look at sturridge

  • Russell

I think both Downing and Mata would be nice.  Downing on the left, Mata on the right.

However, that's easier said than done.

  • Sai Manoj R

I think Aquilani and Meireiles will leave for some italian club(s)
Now we should address our problem areas Downing....
If man city get Nasri we could try for Adam Johnson or Milner

I'm somewhat ambivalent about the transfer itself, but why was a photographer at his medical?

  • AdamSonOfIstanbul

what is the deal wit the LFC website, keeps telling me to use a pw and a login?

  • Russell

I was having the same problem.  If you just keep clicking cancel, it should stop.

    Off topic, but nice piece:

One thing I'm actually kind of excited to see us try is a 4-4-2 diamond:
    -------------Carroll----------
    --Suarez----------------
    -------------Gerrard---------
    -----Adam-----------Henderson/Meireles
    --------------Lucas-----------

Adam and Henderson could provide Andy all kinds of cross from  deep without having to play as true wingers, and Gerrard and Suarez could have the freedom they need to thrive. With the addition of an attacking LB, it could be a very effective formation against all but the top teams.

  • AdamSonOfIstanbul

Charlie needs to be in the center and Dirk could start for Barca.  Rather see Kuyt on the right, Meireles on the left and our two new boys on the bench.  I really think Captain Fantastics injury might be a lot worse than he is letting on.  Only the coaches really know how fit he is.

  • poorscouserbobby

    I think you're right about Stevie G.

  • Russell

This has nothing to do with Charlie Adam, but my home page is the LFC website and now when I get on to it it asks me for a username and password.  I've tried every username and password I can think of and it isn't going away.  So, is anyone else having this problem?

  • Ed

I think everyone's been having the same trouble, Russell--if you just click "Cancel" it should keep loading.

  • Russell

Ya, but it's annoying how it makes you click cancel about 5 times.  I was just making sure it wasn't just me.

  • Rosco

I'm fairly pleased at the signing of Adam, for as Ed mentioned, solely for the purpose of Premier league squad depth. He does bring a few things to the table that are not to be sniffed at, some that most definitely are.

I just hope to Jesus, Allah, Buddah, that Kenny doesn't try to attempt sticking 'ol Chuck out on the left as, after watching him for a couple of seasons in that position at Rangers it really was chronic to witness.
But, as I say, pleased to have him. Welcome big man and I look forward to seeing you scoop dead-balls into the top corner on a regular basis this coming season.

  • Tropics Red

I've got to admit, I'm not keen on the transfer - I believe we have more pressing positions to strengthen. In saying that, 8m is not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things. SAF paid 16m for a 4th winger... Adam gives us a deep lying playmaker to sit alongside Lucas in a 4-2-3-1 & 4-2-2-2 or a 3rd left sided centre midfielder in a 4-3-3.
Whether he's better than what we've got is questionable. Can he kick on after disappointing at Rangers and being a luxury at Blackpool? Maybe - or maybe he's just simply the style of player KK/Commolli want in the squad.

Can we attract the cream of players being courted by the top teams? Probably not as having no CL football is a big factor and we have to shop accordingly.

Pre season I heard calls for us to sign Coentrao - is it any suprise he's signed for RM? One of the ways of getting a bargain is to sign someone who has not achieved their peak at another club, identify wht has caused that failing and turn it around. Maybe now Coentrao has gone to RM we can take advantage of RM's soon to be ousted LB - Marcelo?

Liverpool training from yesterday...is that a young Argentinian LB i see there by the name of Insua?

    LB problem solved!?

  • Ed

Considering last summer I lost my shit every time an Insua exit report was released, I'm very glad to see him back. Not sure that it completely solves anything at this point, or that it removes LB as a need in the transfer window, but it'd be nice to see him back in contention.

  • Nic

Pants - well Ed seems you might be staining a few more pairs, sorry!

Just heard via Skysports that Roma, Fiorentina & Palermo have all been linked with Insua so potentially the search for LB continues.

  • PDubz18

Before the LB problem is addressed I assume that KK is going to check out how Insua is doing...if he looks like a solid player then I do not see why you would buy another LB when Aurelio and Insua plus Robinson is perfectly okay.

  • Tropics Red

Is what we've got ie Insua 22 (played for Argentina) and Robinson (18) more of a gamble than say buying someone like Cissokho, who is also unproven in the EPL? At least Insua looked comfortable attacking even if he did look like he has a lot to learn defending. But that's also the nature of attacking full backs, particulalrly if Kenny sets us up in a narrow formation with lots of CM's!

  • I guess I'm totally on board with the concept that a deep (and a more left-footed) midfield is a good
thing, and a Charlie Adam addition certainly fits into the John Henry
mantra that Liverpool needs more depth, but there are glaring problems
in the backfield and the wing that need *the most* attention. And
only rumored moves have addressed those key deficiencies, with no actual
    transfers there yet.

Sure, I'd be disappointed if, after all the talk of
Liverpool going on a youth spending spree this summer, we'd end up with
    only two-possible-starters-but-more-likely-backup-midfielders and after all
is said and done we still retain our sometimes incompetent, but more often
hobbled back line.  Depth would be good there, too!

Then again, I'd not be disappointed enough to lose faith that we're on an upward slope.  Remember, under King Kenny's points average, Liverpool would have been in the Champions League with the players we already had if KK coached all year long.  This transfer window really is just gravy on top of an already-successfully-prepared Kenny Daglish meatloaf.

  • poorscouserbobby

The King makes meatloaf?  very nice sir.

  • Jack

Spearing, Lucas, Poulson, Henderson, Gerrard, Adam, Meireles, Aqualani, Shelvey, Cole, Jovanovic

that's a full team of central midfielders, plus perhaps youngsters I don't know about!

Surely some of the above should leave permanently or on loan. I know which ones I would choose...

That said, many benefits in rotating the midfield, which the mancs and to a lesser extent chelsea have done very well with the past few seasons. The midfield is what changes a team's style the most, and they do the majority of the running so it gives us more options than previous years.

Because Adam has been a long term target, not a 'shit! there's only a few hours left of the window, this Danish holding midfielder looks good...' type of buy, I'm optimistic. He's been bought cos Dalglish / Commolli have something in mind for him. I can only assume they have a tactical plan and don't just sit in the sefton over a bitter and a cheque book reading about players in the daily star (although that's a lovely mental image).

  • redtrev73

Being a tight Scot I bet The King ducks out to the toilet when it's time to get his round in Jack!! At least in your sefton-set fantasy they're not reading Martin Samuel for tips!
My take on the eventual arrival of Adam is simple...
"Welcome to the club Charlie! As a rabid Redman of many years I embrace all new and talented recruits...have a word with Carra about tracking back though lad...you do NOT want an on-field rollicking from our centre-half.."

  • matt

i was just wondering if i was alone in my hatred of the following: "why don't we just try put in a cheeky bid for ______?"

what in the hell does that even mean?  how is a transfer cheeky?

i also love how it's used in the context of a totally ridiculous idea that can thus be phrased around it being "cheeky."  example: "We should try a little cheeky 20 million pound bid for Samir Nasri."

I'm slowly losing my mind, I'm ecstatic we signed Adam just for the sake of ending it. Like when you get the flu and you feel so nauseous that you finally are just excited to puke and be done with it already.

  • Jack

In what kind of world can the life time approximate earnings of 50 people ever be "cheeky"!?

  • Cheekyfellow

So, you're trying to say that Damien Comolli and KK made a deal for the sake of, "ending it."  Heh.

  • matt

no, i said i'm happy the deal has been made for the sake of ending it.  never said they did it just to end it

  • Ryan

BAH! It's not on wikipedia. Therefore, it can't be true.

  • poorscouserbobby

I am confident that the King will work something in the midfield.  Gerrard is no spring chicken at 31(does Dalglish know something we don't about Gerrards injuries, and will he soon take a Giggsesque role of cameo's here and there?), Meireles is 28, Aquaman is 27 tomorrow, whilst Charlie Adam is 25...Toss in that Jordan Henderson is barely 21, Shelvey is 19, Spearing is 22, while Lucas is only 24. We've got some pretty young midfielders that have an excellent opportunity to learn and grow into the Liverpool way.  I do sadly suspect Aquaman is leaving, I hope Raul is not.  The words that I have heard about the Adam deal involved player(s) going to blackpool as well.  If it's Shevley on loan, that could be very good for him.  Also the latest word I heard on wide-type-players involved Michael Bastos.  I am excited for the up coming season, and new additions and I'm confident we have good things coming our way.  Golden skys and all.

  • Guest

    Fuck.

  • I'm so happy ... that I don't have to hear about this, anymore.

As usual, I agree with most of what has already been said here.  He's a fine player to have coming off the bench, if only for his corner kicks and sporadic flashes of creativity.  He's not a starter, at present, on account of being chronically inconsistent.

That said, I obviously hope he does well, improving on his problem areas and giving Kenny yet another quality option in his ever-expanding quiver of midfielders.

    Now, go get Mata, already.

  • Khaine

Like I said in the other thread,  I can live with this. Options aplenty in midfield and a lot of players that can handle different positions in a variety of set ups.

I can't see him as an anchor or a central mid in a 4-4-2. More likely to the left of Lucas in a midfield three or as an attacking mid in that narrow 4-4-2. I could even picture him playing in "the hole", playing it simple when called for or coming deep to collect, giving him time and space to move and orchestrate play, while the one or two deeper lying midfielders can advance past him as play moves into the final third, while he remains outside the box, left peg at the ready.

Also, as Ed alluded to, perhaps (hopefully) training in a top team with top facilities and staff and playing without the pressure of being 'that guy' will make Adam reach new heights (I'll be happy if he can consistently deliver like he did against man utd in Jan).

And set pieces. Adam. Carroll. Boom! I've seen it. When I close my eyes. It's beautiful.

  • INCABRUCE

Welcome....to the House of Steven Gerrard!

  • acha5066

As long as he's only there as cover I'm not entirely pissed off, but if he gets in the side ahead of Meireles then I will be entirely pissed off.

  • AustinRed

    When you consider it, the
problem is self-correcting.  If Adam is thrown into the fray,
experimentally. and fails, it is difficult to imagine that Kenny won't
make an adjustment, at which point Adam will become the squad depth we
all probably want him to be. If Adam succeeds in the starting eleven,
    well hell, even better.

So if reports are accurate (SkySports suggesting 7M), then we paid a
reasonably small sum for some Stevie insurance and a bit of scrappy
emotion on the pitch (which every club needs, occasionally).

  • acha5066

yes, but what if his arrival means Aquilani or even worse, Meireles departs?

  • AustinRed

The value of signing Adam can't be reasonably assessed until the end of the transfer window. I suspect Aquilani has nothing to do with this deal.  If we sell him, it is likely to make room for Downing or Mata.  Meireles is a different story.  Its possible he could be sold in the wake of the Adam signing due to an overcrowded midfield.  But what if Meireles is sold to increase our purchasing power? What if you were told FSG were swapping Meireles for Adam so they could gain a few million on the exchange, and use the surplus to buy Mata instead of Downing?  Could you live with that?
Its difficult to imagine what the club intends at this point.  So I'll reserve judgment until August.  However, for the record, if you turn out to be correct, and we simply swap Adam for Meireles, then yes, I will be inconsolably pissed off.

  • acha5066

I don't think I could live with it. Meireles was too good last season and we would definitely miss him.

To be honest. I don't think money is an issue. When you consider Carroll and Suarez were basically free considering the money from Torres' sale, then all up we've only spent somewhere in the low twenties on Henderson and Adam. So, if FSG want Mata I'm sure they have the funds to make it happen without selling one of our stars.

The last three transfers in Carroll, Henderson and Adam have genuinely left me saying 'WTF!?' However, like you say we have no idea what the coach and manager are planning. I really hope that at the end of August though, we have some genuinely good additions to our squad and not a team of duds. So far, Mata is the only one I'm excited about. I guess all we can do is hope.

  • Cheekyfellow

I like it. More on the indifferent side, but I generally like the pickup. This looks more like a Kenny buy than a Comolli, though they obviously had to both agree. You can see the type of players Kenny is perhaps after. A player who led a team to the premier league, and regardless about the "tracking back" issues, still has a lot of passion and energy. This team needs more of these types of players that can challenge for spots. Henderson is so young, I don't think you should even call him a center midfielder yet, he could be a winger waiting to blossom - who knows?

With no Euro matches this season, we have to go as far as possible in the domestic cups. Liverpool have been so lackluster in these it's ridiculous. For now, at least, we got a congested midfield(center) - but what better way to make spots more competitive. I think Man United have this down pretty well. I think it'll provide more interesting/entertaining matches, especially in the domestic cups, and hopefully those bottom level table matches that were so dismal at times.

So fuck it, he's a Liverpool player now, I wish him the best.  All I ask for is some passion and energy to a side that often lacked it. I mean, one year ago we were complaining about Alice and his band - errr, we still are! That's my 2 cents.

  • Ravenilli

I was one of the people that did have a soft spot for Adam from the start so hopefully he will be a great Liverpool player.

  • Joel

Seems to me that Adam is intended as cover for Gerrard's passing and presence in a three man CM. Agree 100% that Adam/Henderson aren't likely to push Lucas, Raul, or Gerrard out of the 11 consistently. Additionally, I'd suspect that if Aquilani sticks around, we'll see a fair amount of Raul/Henderson as wide AMs. Personally, I'm still hoping that we pick up an actual DM to cover Lucas.

  • paul

Isn't Raul almost out of the door now though? I read someone (could be BS) he initially signed on the cheap and would get a better deal at the end of a year, but the improved deal hasn't been forthcoming, or something like that.

  • Red2death

    Spot on.

I think Adam will be a decent squad addition, but nothing more unless he improves significantly.  When he's on-form and spraying passes around, he can be a great player to have, maybe even get a run of a few matches.  And at other times when he's just ineffective (and we know those times will come), then we'd just save him as injury cover, or for cagey times late in matches where pumping set pieces to Carroll's head seems to be the order of the day.  After all, he's only 7m.  Standard price for a domestic substitute these days.

  • Ed

Shoehorning Gerrard into a defensive role and subtracting Lucas/Meireles for an Adam-Gerrard-Henderson midfield for the sake of "they're new and he's the captain!@$!", unlikely as it may be, makes me want to scrape my eyes out.

  • mardia

The most baffling thing to me is suggestion that Henderson/Adam will easily replace Lucas/Meireles. Ignoring the (imo, wrongheaded) suggestion that LFC sell Meireles, there's no way anyone's displacing Lucas, not after the season he had. Kenny rates Lucas highly, he's been a rock in midfield, he's not going anywhere.

Depth in midfield is never anything to sneeze at, and the fact that this transfer saga is over is something to celebrate, at least. Still, I'm more pleased at the news of Glen Johnson extending his contract with LFC, I won't lie.

  • GalahadThreepwood

+1.  I find myself very much of your mind these days, mardia.  I'm happy Adam signed, b/c he has potential to be a solid addition to the squad, and at any rate it ends all the rumor-mongering.  But Johnson's contract extension makes me much happier.  I like it when established players like Glen and Pepe make long-term commitments to the club because it shows me they feel that things are moving in the right direction.
