Liverpool 2, Valencia 0: Closing Out the Preseason

Just like that, Liverpool’s preseason matches are done, and we can put to rest the conversation about whether or not the results matter. From here on out, it’s all for real, and there’s little time left to get themselves sorted before Sunderland visit in a week’s time. Exciting, yes, although it’s also a little nerve-wracking given the questions created by some bumpy preseason performances. Better today, and some encouraging signs from those involved, but still plenty left to do.

It was as full-strength a squad as you could hope for from Liverpool right now—with Steven Gerrard, Raul Meireles, and Martin Skrtel still out through injury, Kenny Dalglish’s eleven included three of the four summer additions and a strangely experienced and skilled back line. Pepe Reina started in goal behind Glen Johnson, Jamie Carragher, Daniel Agger, and the recently fit Fabio Aurelio, giving Liverpool their strongest-looking defense of the preseason. A central midfield pairing of Charlie Adam and Jay Spearing were tasked with most of the organizing, Stewart Downing, Alberto Aquilani, and Jordan Henderson were further advanced from left to right, and Andy Carroll started as the lone man up top.

As you’d expect in the first and only home match of the preseason, Liverpool came out the gates on the front foot, winning an early corner from a Glen Johnson forward run and getting a near-chance from an excellent Stewart Downing cross. Downing set up another chance shortly after, with Aurelio playing him down the left, but the resulting cross was just out of reach of Caroll in the box.

The front man wouldn’t have to wait very long to connect, though, as David Albelda’s errant back pass left Carroll clean through on goal. His first shot was ricocheted off Diego Alves’ left leg and caromed from the post across the goal mouth, leaving Carroll with a chance to tuck away on the far side. It ended up at a narrow angle, and Alves nearly recovered, but Carroll pushed it across to give Liverpool the early lead.

From there things died down for the rest of the first half—Stewart Downing provided most of the impetus getting forward on both flanks for the hosts, but few chances were left for Liverpool as Valencia gained more of possession. The only real talking point in terms of match action was the altercation between Andy Carroll and Adil Rami; Carroll again had a look at goal from distance but felt he was fouled, and he almost immediatly produced a terrible tackle on the defender worthy of at least a yellow. He found himself on the receiving end minutes later, as David Albelda clattered into him around midfield. Not the type of involvement anyone was looking for, and he was lucky first not to be sent off, and subsequently not to come off injured.

Halftime saw only a few personnel changes, with Lucas making his preseason debut in place of Jay Spearing and Jack Robinson spelling a surprisingly still-fit Fabio Aurelio. The biggest change came off the pitch, with the club announcing the sale of Daniel Ayala to Hull City. Not a huge shock given the talk in recent weeks and his time spent there on loan, and a good move for his career, but slightly questionable timing for the announcement. Andwhile he wasn’t likely to see any action this season, one less central defender for a squad whose defense has looked both shaky and lacking in depth.

The second started as the first half had wrapped up, as the guests again saw more possession with Liverpool looking to find balance. Jack Robinson’s cross to Downing at the far post was the only forward move to speak of; a slew of changes on 58 minutes (Ngog-Carroll, Kuyt-Downing, Maxi-Aquilani, Cole-Henderson) saw a surge of energy up front, with Dirk Kuyt’s cross reaching Maxi within a minute after coming on. The Argentinean’s volleyed cross back across goal found Ngog, but the resulting effort was pushed wide. Some slick moves by Daniel Agger followed shortly thereafter, but the match again settled into a slower pace, with Tino Costa’s free-kick from distance the only effort at either end to speak of.

Sotirios Kyrgiakos was Liverpool’s last substitution after John Flanagan came on for Charlie Adam, replacing Daniel Agger in the 79th minute. The Greek was involved somehow in the final goal; a scramble in the box after Joe Cole’s free kick left Kyrgiakos and Kuyt just off the goal line, and both looked to bundle it home for Liverpool’s second. Kuyt was credited with it, though, and the home side saw the match out with little incident.

*

I suppose today was about as encouraging as a relatively dull 2-0 victory over talented Spanish opposition could be. It was clear that Valencia had little urgency for most of the match, which you can either credit to Liverpool’s defensive effort or the fact that it’s still preseason. It was better from the hosts at the back, and it was a team effort for most of the 90 minutes—aside from Andy Carroll, most of Liverpool’s front four spent considerable time in their own half on a day that Pepe Reina had little action to speak of.

Stewart Downing was far and away Liverpool’s top performer on the day; he got forward confidently and nearly set up two goals in the opening minutes, and he was the only consistently positive attacker when Liverpool looked mostly out of ideas. He was just as impressive tracking back, assisting Fabio Aurelio on the left before switching flanks and turning in a similarly impressive, if less prominent, display on the right.

There’s less to shout about for the other summer signings, as Charlie Adam wasn’t terrible but looked somewhat lost deeper in central midfield, and Jordan Henderson struggled to exert any influence on the match despite his best efforts. I don’t know that either slide directly into the starting eleven in a week’s time, as Lucas and Jay Spearing are the more effective central midfield pairing and Dirk Kuyt experienced more success on the flank after coming on (and is a nailed-on starter for most anyway). There’s indications that both Adam and Henderson will have a positive impact, but right now only Stewart Downing looks like a marked improvement to last year’s front six.

The rest of the squad varied, as Reina had little to do, Agger and Aurelio stayed fit and were consistent, and Andy Carroll scored but showed a reckless streak during the five minutes that saw him booked and nearly injured. It was nice to see Lucas back, Spearing was solid during his time alongside Adam, Kuyt showed the class and composure that were lacking during Henderson’s time on the pitch, and Joe Cole showed that he’s remarkably adept at inappropriate backheels and changed nobody’s mind about where his future lies. Not the flashiest performance from anyone involved, but if steady and consistent is what we were looking for after shipping 15 goals in five matches, today was a success.

And any way you cut it, even with the anxieties and unanswered questions, we’re only a week away from the opener. After a summer that, at times, seemed like it was crawling along, that’s a good thing.

Ed, sorry to continue ths non football thread but I used the Oxford Dictionary which might be a better reference. I will try find out more as I love finding out new words but not those only used in Scrabble. Do you usually spelling in this context in polite company.

  • Ed

Haha, no worries, there's this, which is a discussion about use of the phrase. Might be helpful:

Ed, it didn't help my cause to misspell grammer. However my spelling is usually good but my typing is getting worse. Don't want to sound pedantic but I cannot find any other meaning (online) for "spelling".  Is it Olde English or Scouse perhaps? And I wasn't confused by the use of it in conjunction with the seldom used phrase re a fit Aurelio.

  • Ed

Dunno about the veracity of Online Dictionary, but it at least proves that I'm not the only asshole using the word that way (v4):

    http://onlinedictionary.datase...

  • MidnightOil

Long-time listener, first-time caller. Vic, dictionary.com defines "spelling" with Aussie usage as "to have or take a rest period". Give it a try, mate.

  • VicCapeTown

Ed, usually your gammer is spot in but wreck
less instead of reckless. And what does Robinson spelling a still fit Aurelio mean?

  • redtrev73

    Dude, what's "gammer"?

  • Ed

Re: reckless, sometimes my fingers revolt against my brain.

Re: "spelling...", it just means relieving or giving a rest, had thought it was somewhat common. Except "still-fit Aurelio" isn't really that common, so I can see where you might have become confused.

  • CheekyFellow

    hsssssssss

  • Russell

I think it's clear that King Kenny is molding Adam to play the way he wants him to.  He had maybe one long raking ball that whole game and it has been like that in almost every friendly.  Charlie's game today showed me that he is all about finding the open space, no matter where it is.  I remember several times he had a long, accurate, one-touch pass to Reina or a defender because they were in space.

I'm interested to see him play alongside Lucas for a longer period of time because I feel Lucas really creates space in the midfield and Adam could exploit that space very well.  I mean, didn't anyone else notice that once Lucas came on the center-midfielders had more balls coming to their feet?

  • redtrev73

Yep, at least someone else was watching the same game as me. Charlie didn't resemble a mixture of zidane and gerrard but he was tidy and efficient and displayed fine touch. Just because I and others wouldn't pick him ahead of a top-form Raul ( yet ) doesn't mean he should be knocked or viewed in the jaundiced fashion I have witnessed since he came to LFC. Well done lad. And by the by, Hendo put in a real shift of work in an alien position. Any danger we can cut these new lads some slack???

  • Ed

Completely agreed on Henderson--I think more than anything, his workrate and willingness are a welcomed addition. As he finds his footing I think he's going to be a terrific addition, and folks will be spending far less time talking about his price tag.

My criticisms of Adam are probably still colored by the build-up to his arrival, which is admittedly unfair. Like Russell, was much more encouraged seeing him alongside Lucas, and think that similar to Henderson, once his fit in the squad is found, we'll see good things.

  • CheekyFellow

Nice to see a different take on Adam, I think too many people are bashing him. I think the same thing of Henderson as well.

  • Yann

G'day all. Good to be posting again. I promised myself I'd stay away during the off-season because I simply can't handle the rumour-fuelled wankfest it always is. Plus my Collingwood Magpies are absolutely flying and I've been lapping up the brilliance. Anyway, thank heaven's the real season is now upon us. I wasn't able to catch the match early morning Melbourne time but I've seen highlights, and I'm almost certain the second goal is Soto's. Should I have my eyes checked?

And regarding a defender, has anyone suggested Christopher Samba as a defensive acquisition? To my (faulty?) eyes, he looks like exactly what Liverpool needs down back.

  • Baldrick

Woah Yann! Are you adding Samba to the 'rumour-fuelled pre-season wankfest'?!!

Nice idea... though Cahill seems a better fit (he says raw knob in hand)

  • Yann

Soto has a one year contract and could well be gone before the season is done. Samba is a Goliath, quick for his size and composed on the ball. We could do a lot worse than him, although I agree Cahill would also be a good buy.

  • CheekyFellow

The fact we're still missing Johnson (hardly played), Meireles, Gerrard, and Suarez from the lineup, leaves me pretty optimistic. The guys that were brought in (Downing especially), will only shine more. Reality is, they can't do it without the the players I just named. Defenses will be in a mind fuck if they have to deal with our best players (I know, we have to assume they're healthy, which brings us back full circle again)

  • Jake_LFC

Just how good is Daniel Agger? Honestly, when fit, is there a better CB around?

  • Mike

I would disagree if I wasn't too busy scouring the internet for bed sheets that featured his likeness or contemplating shaving two thirds of my head in solidarity. Yeah he's ok.

  • Ed

How I long for the days when the "if fit" qualifier isn't needed.

  • CheekyFellow

I remember the troll of a couple weeks ago would say that Agger needs to be put in a midfield position. It was a troll of a comment, but I'm not gonna lie, his forward driving runs are often better than those of Lucas - it made me chuckle.

  • Guest

It's actually not the worst idea if we, you know, had other central defenders available. Which we do not. Moving Agger to defensive midfield is robbing Peter to pay Paul, so to speak.

I still fear Jamie is only going to get worse...

  • Sue

Carra is done, he's always been slow, but age has really caught up with him. He should be cover these days. He's not Sami. KK will learn the hard way, I fear. Or Carra may learn to not HOOOOF the ball all the time, and learn excellent positional sense like Sami (also a sloth for speed) and have a great season. Nahh, he'll be slow and a hoofer :(

  • redtrev73

Must be brilliant to be so clued-in about Carra's ability when Kenny is so poor he must torturously "learn" from his stupidity.

  • Ed

Also, left out comment on Glen Johnson, who apparently suffered a thigh injury and will be evaluated more fully tomorrow. Well done by Martin Kelly, I thought, who was as good as he's been this preseason.

  • paul

A great start to the game, and then a little bit of handbags, then dull dull dull.

Carroll's gifted goal showed determination and chasing, which will do well for his confidence. Aquaman disappeared pretty quick after some classy touches. I thought Adam had a good commanding game, without his usual can't be bothered routine too.

Disappointed how poor we became when Lucas, Maxi, Cole and Ngog came on. Cole, we know is poor, Ngog's pace was used to run away from receiving the ball. Lucas looked two gears short, and I hardly noticed Maxi. Kuyt was back to toberlone boot for first touch too.

Certainly a more solid performance that the rest of the preseason, even if the ending players harked back to the Wubbish times. And we finally get a clean sheet, not that Reina had any real work to do!

Top 4 is surely too far unless Suarez comes back soon. A strong side isn't going to flap around like today's opposition. We hardly tested their keeper, which must be worrying.

Any news on Johnson (not that Kelly did a bad job)?

  • Geza

I was at the match today (in the paddock, right beside the subs' bench) and witnessed what could reignite the good old Mata gossip: himself and Reina had quite a bit of a chat at the end of the game, once all the other LFC players had left the pitch (he ended up giving him his shirt...). That means more then likely that they are simply friends, but hey, you never know...

With respect to the game itself I thought that Martin Kelly was clearly the man of the match. He replaced Johnson 2 minutes into the game and did not make a mistake in defence while making quite a few productive runs forward. Great day for him, especially since Capello was in the stands (if he stays fit, he is big time on course to earn a senior england cap sooner or later...).

I thought that Aquillani did good as well and showed a couple of world class touches. On player that clearly did not add much was unfortunatelly Henderson. He made several unfortunate choices and had a good few of bad touches...not a starter from my pov.

Finally a small correction to your report, Ed - Rami is a French international (with Maroccan origins if I am not mistaken...)

  • Ed

Gah, thanks, edited that. Even worse that I double-checked to see that I got his first name right and blew past that. This is the problem with being an idiot.

  • mardia

Didn't get the chance to see the match live, although I'm glad to hear about the clean sheet and the improved defensive performance, not to mention how well Downing played according to these and other reports. Still would really like us to make a couple of defensive signings before the window closes, though.

Finally, a frivolous question--I heard that Raul was in the stands watching, exactly how much of a hipster did he look like, anyway? From all accounts, it was impressive. Are we talking the full-on costume with the glasses and scarf or what?

  • Geza

He had a baseball cap..no glasses and scarf... for the rest I am not sure, but the daily mail might have a picture :)

  • Honestly, I think the "Raul is hipster" thing's a little overdone. Sure, for an athlete he comes across hipster as fuck, but he doesn't look like the sort who spends half his life digging through thrift shop bins to get the look just right.

  • Jake_LFC

This is going to be a long week. Let's go lads. YNWA
