Liverpool 2, Manchester City 2: On to Wembley

“Would it be a risk to play defensively?” the reporter asked Kenny Dalglish as Liverpool prepared to face Manchester City at Anfield in the second leg of the League Cup semi-finals.

“Well,” said Dalglish, “we won’t play defensively.”

“Because you’re at home?” asked the reporter.

“Because we’re Liverpool,” said Dalglish.

*

After a dull and uninspired performance against Bolton on the weekend, and following on from one of the most conservative and defensive displays by a Liverpool side in recent years while eking out a narrow one-nil advantage from the first leg of the semi-final, it wasn’t entirely unfair for those looking on to wonder just how Liverpool planned to deal with the league leaders. And with a teamsheet containing many of the same names in midfield as the one that had recently shown so little fight against Bolton in the league, it was equally fair to wonder just how this struggling Liverpool side would survive for ninety minutes if City were fired up for the match.

In the end, Craig Bellamy putting in one of the best performances by a Liverpool player this season, strong showings from reliable big-game players like Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt, and a lucky bounce or two would all help to propel Liverpool past Manchester’s big spenders with a performance that deserved more than the final scoreline. On the day, though, that the two-two draw flattered City and once again spoke to Liverpool’s inability to put their chances away mattered little, with Liverpool now set to make the trip to Wembley on aggregate.

*

“What did you think of the penalty?” asked a reporter after the match.

“What do you mean?” asked Dalglish.

“The handball,” said the reporter.

“Exactly,” said Dalglish.

*

It seemed to all be going wrong for Liverpool just after thirty minutes into the first half, when a pair of Charlie Adam blunders and a screamer from Nigel de Jong put City ahead in the game and drew them level on aggregate. Up to that point, the inclusion of Jordan Henderson in a midfield trio and Steven Gerrard curbing his attacking instincts to take up a more defensive role had gone a long way to shoring up Liverpool in the centre of the park after a shaky showing against Bolton had led to Dalglish calling out the players’ work rates and attitude. Adam had put in a number of poor tackle attempts and given the ball away cheaply repeatedly in the early going, but the players around him had ensured that Liverpool hadn’t yet been punished by a City side that had more possession than the hosts but showed little cutting edge.

That all changed in the 31st minute when Adam turned the ball over to City and then went charging off after it. The problem was that in doing so, he deserted his part of the pitch to double up on a man already well covered by Gerrard, and when the ball then popped out to de Jong where Adam had been standing seconds earlier the City destroyer was given the time he needed to uncork a rocket from distance that flew past Reina and into the top corner. Even more damning was that after leaving his side of the field deserted, Adam showed little determination to get back and close down de Jong, instead leaving it for the more distant Gerrard to try to deal with

manchester city liverpool penalty

Still, if Adam deserves damning for City’s opener, he also deserves praise for Liverpool’s first when he collected the ball towards the right of the penalty area off a corner, dipped his shoulder and created the space he then moved into, and chipped the ball to Daniel Agger in the middle. Agger’s shot tipped off the boot of a sliding Micah Richards and ricocheted up to strike his elbow—and Phil Dowd pointed to the spot. There isn’t a fan who wouldn’t have considered it an injustice had it gone against Liverpool instead, but when Gerrard slotted the ensuing penalty home the resulting scoreline was the least Liverpool deserved after peppering the City goal throughout the first half.

*

“What did you think of Bellamy’s performance tonight?” asked the reporter.

“If they’ve got another player like him they don’t want,” said Dalglish, “I hope they’ve got my number.”

*

It wasn’t just that Liverpool had once again been wasteful in front of goal, as without Joe Hart it’s likely that City would have found themselves down by a goal or three and out of the tie early. He stopped Jose Enrique when the ball dropped to the fullback at the edge of Hart’s six yard box. He sprawled to block Stewart Downing when Dirk Kuyt lofted a cross to the midfielder standing unmarked at the back post. He stopped a Martin Skrtel shot sailing towards the top corner from the penalty spot. In short, he stopped just about anything that came near him—and more than his share of anything that didn’t.

When Edin Dzeko converted City’s second shot on target into their second goal of the evening after 67 minutes, it was Hart who appeared certain to receive man of the match honours for almost single-handedly dragging his side past a far more dangerous looking Liverpool and into the finals. Craig Bellamy, however, had other ideas, and the firey, tireless striker who had been charging at City’s defense all evening finally beat England’s best keeper from open play—Liverpool’s first and only such goal of the two-legged tie.

After City allowed him to move to Liverpool on a free in the summer, the man who has turned out to be Liverpool’s best—and cheapest—signing of the last transfer window had sunk his former club, and when he left the pitch after 87 minutes it was to a well deserved standing ovation from a grateful stadium. Then it was back to packing their own penalty area as they had at the Etihad, Liverpool defending as a team to repel City’s last-gasp effort to force extra time by evening up the aggregate scoreline. And, after a nervy few minutes, the final whistle blew: On the back of stellar performances from Gerrard, Henderson, Agger, and—especially—Craig Bellamy, Liverpool will make their first ever trip to the new Wembley to face Cardiff in the League Cup final.

Absolutely chuffed with this result. Liverpool FC exists to win trophies. Lets hope this is just the start of bigger things to come.

  • tony

The Cup is as good as ours now. With a silverware in his hirst year back, the King should have earned the trust from FSG. That also means we are going to see Adam starting every game for the next 2 years.

  • fastrail

I don't want to be so sure about that cause we suck big time against lower opposition. But Suarez is back by then so maybe you're right ;)

  • lfc80uk

    YNWA!

  • lfc80uk

Still smiling! Great performance from Liverpool! The encouraging factor will be that Suarez is back for the final as well. After the depression of the last few years of Hicks, Gillette, Purslow and uncle Woy Hodgson. It is just such a great feeling to have a final to look forward to. A club moving in the right direction, and the King on course to for a record 8 League Cups for Liverpool.

It just shows that even with £400 million investment, Man City are out of the FA Cup and Champions League. Having proven you can't buy history and you can't buy class. Man City have now established that you can't even buy the Carling Cup.
    Please excuse my schadenfreude *smile*

  • Liverpaul

What a match! Here's hoping many more starts for everyone's favourite fiery, wee Welshman. The Carling Cup final is the new Champions League final and it's 2005, babies.

  • Hart. What a keeper. What an outstanding keeper. If it is humanly possible in some way, shape or form to save a shot, he will.

Bellamy. Give us 11 Bellamys please. Or put Bellamy together with Suarez up front. My goodness they would terrorise defences.

  • Redarmy

yeah, Hart is good, but at the same time, that guy Savic is the worst player in the EPL, and it's not even close.

  • reddie

well well how did the crappy ol kk lead the red men past the bottomless pocket arabs?
lol. c'mon yhu red men, letz dump the red-faced 'sir' outta the F.A

  • Ryan

Any of you plan on going to the final? I'm too poor and too foreign to make it. But I'm curious in how many of you are in that weird European country known as Liverpool.

  • I'm over from Australia and in Berlin, so I will try!

  • McrRed

It's a modern-day wonder as to how difficult it is to get tickets for these games. When I was a regular at Anfield I couldn't get them. Now that times are hard in the McrRed household and I don't get across to see regular games it will be virtually impossible.

Liverpool could easily fill the Anfield-South Stadium. 85,000 turned out to see a friendly in Malaysia in the summer fer cryin out loud! Wembley holds, what? 90,000? So we'll get an allocation of 25-30,000.

    Don't mean I won't try though... ;-)

  • Latortillablanca

lol, what brilliant quips from the King!

if we can just wrap up this trophy (which is by no means assured considering our considerable knack for playing poorly against inferior sides) against cardiff and knock out manure from the FA cup, it would take considerable sting out of missing out on a CL place (although that's by no means out of grasp).

how huge wud this trophy be for the confidence in this long term rebuilding effort? look how much of a catalyst citeh's fa cup success was... or birmingham's carling cup... ;)

    YNWA!!!!!!!!

  • CharlieAdamsBuckteeth

Really glad we'll have Luis back for the final, I hope we can get him his first trophy in red.

This write up was gorgeous.  Many a Liverpool blog (all, in fact, except OYB) has made fools of themselves during the trying times of the last few months.  Ed and Noel are unceasingly excellent.

  • With each passing match, it showed more and more why Chicken Adam should not be playing for Liverpool. He is just not contributing anything constructively. He is a LIABILITY. And I am not being unfair by comparing him to Xabi.

  • tony

Comparing Adam to Xabi is blasphemy.

  • Redarmy

"He is just not contributing anything constructively"

That is simply not true my friend.

  • I mean "constructively".. Sure he makes up the 11th man on the team, but if u look at his play, he is dragging and slowing the team down. His pass rate is poor too.. Perhaps I am not intimately aware of what role KD wanted him to play, whatever that is, he is obviously not doing a good job at it. Above all his minuses, his tackling and awareness is simply horrible.

He may not cost too much at 7M, but he is certainly not a player you wanna bank on taking us back to the top. Nor Downing either.

  • Redarmy

Of course Chaz is not the perfect midfielder, but you can't talk away his good moments. (Think about the pass to Glen in the Chelsea game, or the run vs Manu)

BTW it is getting a little annoying making Chaz the scapegoat for every goal we concede or for every goal we do not score - this goes out to all of you chaz bashers out there - we're going to Wembley - so enjoy the moment - and stop this bulls..t

  • Yes, I can remember that pass, no doubt it was a good one. The thing is, that is the ONLY moment i can remember. Fact is with the position he is playing, dismal and consistently abject displays like these will just expose the team time and again. He is playing for Liverpool, and we cannot afford ONE good moments in every 6 or 7 games. That is not good enough. If he has had a good run of high level performance and is not suffering from form or fitness, I can then understand. He has not. He has not produced anything consistently productive for a substantiated number of matches!

For the quids that we have paid, i really do hope he will come good. Unfortunately, i think its not  a question of his form or fitness, its a matter of ability and talent, for which he possess little.

Just to go on record, Steward Downing is another disappointing player. And at 20M, he is soon degenerating into another "wasted buy".

I am happy we got to Wembley after such a long time. But at the same time, it pains me that we are getting over the moon with a Carling Cup final appearance (we have not won it yet). We should be aiming higher. Much higher. We are Liverpool!

  • tony

Adam contributes, yes but he has more minuses than pluses for sure

  • Like Shankly said, it is like a piano: it takes 8 men to carry it and three to play it. Adam might be one of the carrying ones, but he is not one to be trusted to play the piano. So many times he just looks lost when he has the ball driving forward; as if he'd rather not be the one with the creative responsibility. I feel sorry for him in such moments. I am sure it is a heavy burden to bear - one he is just not cut out for. But when he throws away passes and kicks people, my empathy quickly evaporates. Sorry Adam, but you are not top4 - let alone Champions League material.

  • My sentiments exactly.. while I admit I may have been over zealous in my critic of Adam, but the truth remains that he is never good enough to bring Liverpool back to a top side..

To be fair, the same applies to Downing.. I am just hoping the same is not true for Henderson and ultimately Carroll..

  • purify_the_body

I think you figured it out -- he is trying to carry a top team when he is made to play a lower one.

  • Ed

Just finished watching a replay--loved the sequence right after Bellamy's goal when Gerrard intercepted and played Henderson down the right and the crowd erupted. Led to nothing, but was just one of those goosebump moments. Haven't had many lately, and it was phenomenal.

  • kenny

I'm glad someone said that... I live for those moments, I cry with joy, at how amazing life can be when something happens. Looking back on this game in the future will be like those amazing games I look back on now. I saw the score on my mobile phone(couldn't catch the game, I hate myself for it) and was ecstatic. Thrilling and chilling

  • Ryan

Or as Kim Jong would have said, "WREMBREY!"

  • Ryan

Aw damn it. That joke had been taken already. I'm all out of ideas now.

No i'm not! Joe FART lolol.

  • tony

This was essentially the Carling Cup Final. Obviously my switch to MaCallan has worked.

  • justin

Wow, I haven't felt an atmosphere like that from the team and fans since like, CL semi against Mou's Chelski? So reminiscent of it and that's saying a lot if you think about the renditions of YNWA and how anfield erupted after we were through.

Is there anyone not proud to be a Red out there?

  • RedKen

Yes, great review. The quotes are wonderful, too. Fantastic win! YNWA

  • ShedYourYellow

    Lovely review.

    Lovely match.

    Lovely, lovely, lovely feeling.

I haven't been following Liverpool terribly long, and certainly not long enough to have witnessed any silverware or any kind of trip to Wembley. Let them call it the Mickey Mouse Cup if they like; that doesn't change the fact that I want nothing more than to see Liverpool have it for their own.

And to everyone else who cried? Yeah, me too.

  • Kev00

given our abysmal record from the penalty spot earlier in the season, we can probably thank Gerrard's return to fitness for the trip to Wembley.. He was also a formidable defensive presence in the holding midfield role today and made some excellent tackles to help get the result (in spite of Charlie Adam)

  • Geza27

2am, just back from Anfield...no voice left but happy, happy, happy. Fantastic atmosphere tonight. See you at Wembley!!!

  • Suarez from the car park...

Agger is at fault for the Dzeko goal, he stops tracking back and the pass goes past him for an easy tap in.
Gerrard could have done more to track Kolarov too.

What a cool customer for that penalty.  It wasn't as far in the corner as his first, but it was hard and fast and hart had waited for the central shot.

Hart's reactions and speed of movement are just obscene.

While Adam is a total liability and should have given Dzeko a penalty, their De Jong goal was luck.
Why oh why does Adam keep on tackling from behind.

He gets this glaswegian thick as pigshit, hard and very dense mist come over him and just runs into the back of  people.

Saw the rumour of a £15m bid for Isla (winger, full back and midfielder).  I really hope he ousts adam from the starting line up.

    Wemberlee, wemberlee wemberlee wemberlee......

  • Adam as a defensive midfielder just means poor positioning, clumsy fouls and over the top tackles. Add that to his regular misplaced passes. He is a dirty player and a liability. Please can he be demoted to the bench and away from the starting 11?

  • Scotty

Firstly no need for the ethnic slur on Charlie Adam "He gets this glaswegian thick as pigshit, hard and very dense mist come over him and just runs into the back of  people."

Save that for Man Urinal fans and the like. For the record Adam is from Dundee and not Glasgow like Kenny Dalglish. But maybe all Scottish people fit one stereotype for you?Secondly, while I agree he will ultimately be a squad player let's not forget- he has created more chances and scored more goals than Henderson or Downing- he cost less than half of both of those players- we didn't buy him as a defensive-minded midfielder and he's still adapting- where is your venom for Daniel Agger who totally switched off for the 2nd goal?- while Adam was partially at fault for the first goal it was a wonder-strike from a player who scores once a seasonDowning, Henderson,Carroll and Adam are all struggling for confidence recently but it seems that Adam is bearing the brunt of fans' dissatisfaction. Like those other players as confidence returns his performances will improve. Tonight his cross played a part in the first goal, he had a couple of lovely long-range passes and he did his part.

  • Suarez from the car park...

ok - first a huge apology, it came out all wrong and managed to be offensive to you and probably others.  So a VERY BIG SORRY.

    To demangulate my scrawlings:

thick as pigshit tackles - didn't mean this to be related to scottishness!  Just his bad positioning and play gets him behind other players and then he just goes right ahead and kicks them.

AND HE CAN'T HELP HIMSELF and it drives me nuts!

The scottish thing was taken from the hard nut stereotype of the Gorbals of old in Glasgow (which you have pointed out he's not from) and it's rough gritty reputation.  Being a Rangers player I tied the two together.

I reckon Kenny was attracted to the 'hard nut' character of the player aswell as his passing.  I think it's this part of this make up that lends itself to his determination at which point when he's lost his player he just gets the mist coming down and can't avoid hacking them down.

We were actually very lucky he Dowd didn't give that Pen against him last night.

    So, sorry for the offense.
It has nothing to do with it, but I LOVE Scotland AND the people that I have got close to there.

I worked a summer near Fort William as an Outward Bound Instructor and one out of Largs as a Watersports Instructor on Cumbrae, and used to go Kayaking on the Tay and Awe every Easter, staying at Firbush Point near Killin on the immensely beautiful Loch Tay.

    I shall watch my words....

  • Scotty

Firstly as a fellow Scot I resent your ethnic slur...'Glaswegian thick as pigshit...'. Leave that garbage for Urinal fans and the likes please.

Adam deserves criticism but did we buy him as a defensive-minded midfielder or box-to-box midfielder? I'd argue no. I will also argue that just 8 months into his Liverpool career he'll improve in these duties.

I will also remind you that he has about 8 more assists than Stewart Downing who cost about 2.5 times more and he is also way ahead than Henderson in assists.

The difference at Liverpool from his previous clubs is that a team aren't going to be built around his left foot the way it was at Blackpool. Like the other domestic recruits (with the exception of Bellamy) he is struggling for confidence. When it returns fully we will see better performances.
Ultimately he may only be a squad player but where is the barrage of criticism for Agger? He was asleep for Dzeko's goal and had we not got a 2nd he would be the reason we didn't make it to Wembley.

  • fastrail

Agger? He got us 2 penalties, so people take their eyes out on his mistakes. And more importantly, he is Agger. People love him.

  • What is more, Agger is solid, week in week out. Such a man you can forgive a lapse in concentration.

Adam's work, week in week out? Let's not go there.

  • purify_the_body

Actually, yes, Kenny bought him to play right next to Lucas and run up and down the pitch in a 2-man CM and started him there from day one against Sunderland. Whether you want to call it DM, box-to-box, or CM, there are defensive and positional responsibilities required that he is not suited for.

Against all logic and reason, he has persisted with him there through the embarrassing sending off at Tottenham, being overrun by Swansea, and on and on. It's just crazy. Everyone knew Adam is not built for that even before we signed him, and the occasional assist and goal has not been a good trade for the giveaways, getting caught in possession, ugly/dangerous tackles, the own goal, the missed penalty...

As has been repeated many times, he played in a 3-man CM at Blackpool with two guys to carry his water for him, just like Gerrard and Henderson did today at Anfield. Agger doesn't get the same criticism because overall his standard of play is much, much higher.

  • fastrail

Ah yes overall standard play. I was searching for a right term to defend the criticism against Agger. You got that right.

  • Tom Foolery

Great points, but did it need repeating...twice?

Kidding with ya, Disqus is the bane of my existence, too.

  • Scotty

I have an electronic stutter thanks to Disqus...

  • WHY did Chicken Adam starts AGAIN?? Spearing still out? How long more?

  • purify_the_body

Isla is quite a good player and fits with the Liverpool we saw last season under Dalglish -- he'd fit in perfectly with the Suarez-Maxi style of play. I don't know about him pushing Adam out as I'd guess he'd be used by us on the right.

Adam can be sensibly dropped anyway, without any new players coming in, but Kenny just loves him.

  • tony

Adam moved from the left toward the middle at about the 30 yard. He saw a red shirt on the right. PASS, YOU ASSHOLE! But he would have to pass with his right foot. He turned and flicked left with his left. High school defences would have been back in position with that much time. With a win at Wembley, Adam will be starting for the next 2 years.

     Wembley here we come!

  • Momo

At the end of the day it was a painful draw but not the ugly win I was fearing ,our reputation of a team with an endless fighting spirit against big sides is safe. As I always say our resilience is second to none, however I would like to see our lads defeating the mancs even by a narrow margin on Sunday.

I want them to be dominant in all areas and above the mancs to show everyone here and overseas that Liverpool spirit is the real match for the two giant Mancs' big money no matter which side of Manchester each of them is coming from, the wrong side or the ugly side...

As for Noel I have always joy to read your posts. This time it's a climax.I quote:

"and Phil Dowd pointed to the spot. There isn’t a fan who wouldn’t have
considered it an injustice had it gone against Liverpool instead, but
when Gerrard slotted the ensuing penalty home the resulting scoreline
was the least Liverpool deserved after peppering the City goal
    throughout the first half."

This is the most diplomatic words I've "heard" in the footballing word. You should work for the foreign office.

  • Ed

Looks like you had your Shelvey in hand while reading.

  • Momo

Haha, it was 03 a.m and I had lost all my energy way before that.

  • Tom Foolery

    Pushin' it, Ed. Pushin' it.

  • Ed

Ooooh, big man, so high and mighty when it comes to jokes about players who've showed their wang on the internet.

  • purify_the_body

Wow, we made it through! Amazing. Some thoughts:

Bellamy's work rate is making me question whether Kuyt is the hardest-working player I've ever seen for this club. His chasing was unreal.

Downing's missed chance was eerily similar to Maxi's (2nd?) goal last season at Fulham.

I don't know why 4 City defenders all decided to close down Kuyt at the same time, but I'm glad they did. I still think Kuyt looks close to done, but I'm willing to reconsider if he can serve up some more assists.

And what a classy touch by Johnson back to Bellamy instead of trying a shot from the angle.

Anfield has not seen a cross as high quality as the one Kolarov put in all season...and maybe for a few seasons.

Thanks for the laughs, Adam, Downing, and Carroll. You can go now. No, really, you can go. We'll be fine without you.

What a shot by De Jong. Interesting how falling down seemed to put the perfect curve on it -- better to be lucky than good, for sure.

    Henderson keeps plugging away. Respect.

Suarez should be able to play in the final, but will we take them for granted and play our fail 4-4-2, or respect them and come out in our stronger 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1?

  • 4-5-1 was the unsung hero last night. If we play it against Cardiff with Suarez up top and Bellamy in place of Downing, we will be very hard to beat.

  • Mike

I really like the 4-2-3-1, but the lack of true, fit CDMs limits LFC's ability to play it. Maybe we could swap Charlie Adam for De Jong? Or Di Giorno; at least the delivery wouldn't be such a problem.

Incidentally, even if Kuyt is close to done, I'm not sure personally, that was his best performance for quite a while. And Henderson, going in the right direction, definately.

  • Nothing stirs the passions like a controversial “hand ball” decision. A ball slams into a player’s arm and one team and their fans are screaming for a penalty, while their opponents are claiming it was an accident. It is a difficult one for the referee to call in the heat of the moment.

The term “Hand Ball” is commonly used, but is not defined in the official FIFA rules. It is a “direct kick foul” if a player (other than the goalkeeper inside his own penalty area) deliberately handles the ball (meaning to deliberately touch the ball with any part of the arm from the finger tips to the top of the shoulder). If the player handles it for the purpose of preventing an opponent from gaining possession, it is a “cautionable offense” and a yellow card should be given. If a player deliberately handles the ball to deny an obvious goal scoring opportunity (e.g., to prevent a breakaway or to deliberately stop a shot), a red card should be given and the player “sent off”. However, a hand ball foul should not be called if: (1) a player is instinctively trying to protect himself from injury or (2) the player did not deliberately touch the ball but the ball hit his arm & he did not move the arm toward the ball.

Micah Richards did not deliberately touch the ball BUT did he not move his arm(s) toward the ball?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

  • Suarez from the car park...

in real time you can see why dowd gave it.

  • Jonny be good.

  • purify_the_body

Thanks for the vid link. Stonewall penalty.

  • Momo

Technically it was not a penalty but intentionally speaking it was one you can't deny. Actually Richards rushed all his body to close down Agger with his  right arm wide open. However, the ball hit his leg then his left arm.The ref clearly saw the intention of stopping the shot by a handball, that's why he didn't hesitate even if the ball ended up flicked by the left arm and not the right one.

  • fastrail

What the? Another draw at home? Just kidding, who cares. This game shows us what difference passion, hunger, and fighting spirit can make.

And Bellamy, what else can I say about this lad. So fucking brilliant, it's hard to believe that he is already 30+ and still got that kind of speed. And to think that there were fans who didn't want him during the summer transfer window, I wonder what they think now.

And I always love it when Kenny talks, he is funny (bar last week of course, lol).

One more month to Wembley, sooo looking forward to it!

  • mardia

That banner made me cackle with delight, just so you know. What a welcome feeling after the mess of the last few months.

Just--man. Top-notch review, Noel, and peppering it with the epic quotes from Dalglish just make it all the more delightful. I'm sure there will be plenty of analysis later from far more knowledgeable people than me, but I'm just gonna delight in the fact that 18 months after fears of relegation/administration, Liverpool FC are going to a final at Wembley.

  • Ed

So that last sentence provides a nice bit of perspective, doesn't it?

Great night, and great review Noel.

  • Suarez from the car park...

hear hear.  One of his classics.

Had to repost the transcript of the handball conversation with the reporter.  so cool.

  • Kev00

anyone have a link for Kenny's prematch interview?

  • Parkje04

Dalglish when asked about whether the penalty should have been given:

    King: "Huh?"
    Reporter: "The Hand Ball."
    King: "Exactly."

Call for his head all you want.  THAT is why he is my king.

Immensest. I think I put that shit on my yard to get rid of the weeds.

  • Suarez from the car park...

    immensini, immensidi,  immemsici.
We came immemsely, we saw immensely, we conquered immensely!  We were immense (apart from Adam).
