LFC 1 – 3 Villa

By: CSD | August 24th, 2009

So–yeah, about that title thing. Before everyone starts cussing the yank owners for their inability to fund an immediate replacement for Alonso, I would like to point out that we should not have to have a huge transfer budget to beat the likes of Tottenham and Aston Villa. Those teams certainly don’t. The only ones that do are Man Utd, Man City, and Chelsea.

The match was started with a good energy that quickly faded. Liverpool never lacked opportunities, having taken 24 shots, with 11 of them on goal. That may not be a fair statistic, because it does not show how well the Villa back four and keeper played. I would put Brad Friedel as man of the match for Villa as he had a nearly flawless performance. In the first minute, he somehow managed to get a foot to Gerrard’s shot that came in from a short header by Benayoun off of a chip by Torres. We should have scored there and it was at that time that I thought to myself, “it’s going to be one of those days.”

The only change to the lineup was Martin Skrtel back in his place. He and Carragher did much better together this time and made a number of crucial tackles. Glen Johnson was unable to get forward much as he was having to run against Ashley Young. Insua looked a bit shaky and was also not getting forward as much which led to a cluttered midfield.

Why is it that when someone on this team makes a mistake that could be considered where it all went wrong, it’s usually Lucas? The Brazilian international did not do well in hushing his critics today when he gave up a free kick that should have been too far away too worry the Reds. Instead, Ashley Young’s shot was deflected into the net by none other than Lucas for an own goal at 34′, and it pretty much went downhill from there. There was supposed to be only one minute of added time at the end of the first half, but Aston Villa earned a corner just before it was out and ended up scoring at 47″. I thought Benitez was about to strangle the fourth official and wish he had because it would have been far more entertaining than what was happening on the field.

Andriy Voronin was brought on for Lucas at 66′, who seemed to have no problem in running off the pitch to hide, and had seemed to contribute to a better flowing attack. A pass by him setup play that led to Torres getting his head on the ball at 72′. Call me crazy, but at this point I would much rather have Voronin out there than Lucas. If this performance has not shown that the current formation will not work consistently, I don’t know what will.

It seemed that Liverpool was going to launch one of the club’s famous comebacks. The Kop had woken up and the passing was quicker and more fluid. It seemed that the addition of Voronin was just what the team needed until a harsh challenge by Gerrard led to a penalty kick being given to Aston Villa. Ashley Young calmly slotted home the final blow at 75′ with Reina diving the wrong direction. After that, the energy was gone and the players seemed resigned to dropping three points at home.

I would really have liked to seen Riera on at some point; he was named as a substitute. With Fabio Aurelio out, we are really missing a good left foot to take free kicks and corners. Ryan Babel was brought in for Benayoun at 76′ and did absolutely nothing but take wild shots that went wide whenever he got a touch on the ball. I guess he thinks to earn a position in the starting XI, he has to score.

Rafa Benitez had told Torres to stop talking to defenders and just worry about scoring. Apparently, he did not say anything about talking to the officials as #9 whined to the referee pretty much the whole match. It was just a matter of time before he was finally booked after claiming that Young was wasting time after being injured.

I had thought about an alternate title for this post. Such things sprang to mind as “Calls for Benitez’s Head in 3…2…”, or “Now Playing for Fourth.” The truth is, I am too deflated to say anything witty. This club should have won the league that season and the only thing that really changed is the absence of one player. Unfortunately, we cannot keep blaming our short comings on Alonso not being with us and cannot say that we don’t need him when we roll a team like Stoke. We have good players and should be able to cope. If they are not being used properly or are not inspired enough to play for the shirt, then that is down to the manager. I usually try to put my own feelings aside and believe in the words, “In Rafa We Trust.” After all, I’m just a guy in front of a computer. I don’t know what goes on behind the scenes or at training. However, there’s a lot going on with the team right now that is leaving me to scratch my head.

Bolton on Saturday.

I giggled when you said United, Chelsea, and City need exorbitant amounts of money to get results against teams like Tottenham and Aston Villa. First off, you lost to both teams. Doesn’t matter if you’re the better side, you didn’t get the result you wanted. Welcome to football. The better team doesn’t always win. Second, you sound like a bitter and sore loser to point the finger at Chelsea, United, and City and state that money is their only means of winning. City is one thing, they spent a ton. But Chelsea and United? Both their sides remain roughly the same as previous seasons, except in the case of United, who actually LOST their best player and didn’t sign anyone even close to filling the role that Ronaldo had in that side.

So take the loss on the chin. You can point the finger at Chelsea, United, and City all you want and say “blah blah money money whatever” but at the end of the day – they’re the ones at the top of the table and you’re floundering around in the middle. Man up and stop whining. The Liverpool supporters I know would be ashamed of that comment.

I giggled when I read your comment because that’s exactly what I DIDN’T say, but thanks for the attempt at comprehension.

If you know anything about this club, you know that there is a lot of heat around the amount of money available to Rafa for transfers. My point is that we shouldn’t need big money to beat clubs like Villa and Tottenham when we already have a good squad. I never said that Man City, Man Utd, or Chelsea are only winning because of their money. I said that they are the only ones that have big transfer budgets.

Feel free to comment on anything else that I didn’t write about.

Perhaps Fin would be better of trolling around the Soccernet forums.

I’m gutted by the result. And CSD, you are right. There’s lots of things going on behind the scenes and 1 of them would likely be Rafa’s bro-mance with Lucas.

i think it is absolutely shameful but if you look at the statistics (from http://www.lfchistory.net), we have not made any significant additions to our squad for 2 seasons in a row now

last season, after selling keane, our net spend was around 5m. and this season, we have broken even so far.

this is really unacceptable. the americunts need to be driven off. even mike ashley was willing to personally bankroll 20m per year for newcastle. all the americunts are doing is sucking up all our profits to pay off their own loans. it is sickening.

Kai, I’m not trolling. CSD, I misunderstood what you wrote because its worded poorly. Even now I had to re-read the opening paragraph at times to decipher that the last sentence is unrelated to the results against those teams, and to the budgets allocated to transfers.

Even still, neither United or Chelsea spent much money this summer. United actually gained a bunch of money by selling Ronaldo, and didn’t use that money to pick up anyone – presumably because they’re wallowing in debt. Chelsea signed Yuri Zhirkov, which in comparison with the last couple years of spending is far lower than what people have traditionally come to expect of the Blues. Zhirkov arguably just adds depth, and isn’t a key player who will make an enormous impact like Alonso does (did) at Liverpool. Either way, Liverpool should be getting results against teams like this without big spending and I understand that’s your point, but seriously, to bring up a lack of spending in the wake of what is ultimately an embarrassing loss is kind of…poor sportsmanship.

Are you sure you re-read the paragraph Finn? I’m pretty sure it was brought up to discount it as an argument or excuse…which is what you said you understood…my brain is bleeding.

Poor loss for Liverpool, they’ll obviously need some sorting out in a hurry if a title run is in the cards this year. Villa deserved the 3 points, but I have a tough time discerning whether they were that good or :iverpool were that bad. Either way, fair play to Villa.

raist: That’s a pretty naive statement considering that Kop Holdings lost £42.6 million last year. They’re hardly raking in profits. And to put an owner, that has been scrambling for a buyer at the first sign of pressure and has subsequently led his club into the Championship League, in the same comment as Liverpool is very insulting.

The debt is increasing and I don’t know how long Hicks and Gillette can hold out. If we can get a better owner(s), hopefully, not too long. However, the current problem is not one that we can buy our way out of.

The only hope for Liverpool this season is that when Aquilani is fit he can go some way to filling the void left by Alonso (which I am not sure he will) the team at the moment is so slack and has nothing holding it together. Yes Liverpool had a lot of chances last night but they never looked like the team of old and always looked vulnerable

We must get Aquiliani fit asap. Before that we must keep the distance to the top to a minimum.

    Oof–tough loss for you guys.

But remember, at this time last year, everyone was writing off Manchester United’s title chances, Arsenal were definitely going to finish outside the top 4, and everyone was wondering if Hull could qualify for Europe. There’s a lot of football left to be played.

Good point Martin…and two years ago, United started with 2 points from 3 games. Not sure if Liverpool have that type of squad this year, but it’s certainly not unheard of.
