League Championship Suddenly Doable?

By: CSD | March 9th, 2008

trophyAs I was searching for news, giggling about how funny it was that Portsmouth is the only Premier League team left in the FA Cup, I happened to bring up the league table. With 9 matches left to play, we sit only 10 points behind Arsenal. I know it’s not likely, but damn, is it doable?

It would probably take a run at the table like Real Madrid pulled off last season, but I think it’s no longer a pipe dream to say that the number one spot is out of reach. With the current momentum, Liverpool and Everton continue to rise, while Arsenal, Manchester United, and especially Chelsea, have slowed down their progression. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Chelsea slide into 5th by the end of the season. That would definitely mean the end of Avram Grant. Blasphemy you say? Only two points separate them and the Merseyside duo.

With the club’s current form, and having won the last four league games, I don’t think it’s out of the question at all to say that we have many more points coming to us. Sure we have to play Arsenal and Man U in the not so distance future, but wins over them is exactly what we need to slow them down.

It’s going to be very interesting to see how the rest of this season plays out. I don’t think we’ll know who the champions will be until the last week. It may not be Liverpool, but suddenly it’s a possibility.

you have to remember that chelsea has 2 games in hand over liverpool, and man u has 1. not to mention, the next two games for chelsea are against derby and sunderland, two teams in the lower part of the premiership, so that two point difference will probably increase to 8. so seriously, lay off the herbals kid, you buggin.

A few of us were chatting about this after Wigan managed to hold Arsenal yesterday. It’s not going to happen but if results were favourable at OT and Emirates then the table would certainly look a lot healthier by the end of the season. I think it’s fair to judge progression this season on how many points we finish behind the leaders - and that could be in fourth still.
