Jordan Henderson Joins Liverpool

jordan henderson signs liverpool

Jordan Henderson, formerly of Sunderland and assuming a successful medical and the midfielder agreeing to terms, will become the latest player to join Liverpool Football Club later today. David N’Gog, Liverpool’s promising striker on the fringes of the first team who originally arrived from Paris Saint-Germain for a bargain £1.5M, heads in the other direction to help make up the fee. And so, after a seemingly endless series of rumours to start off the transfer window, Liverpool secures its first move of the summer.

Henderson, a Sunderland-born product who came up through their academy, was valued by Steve Bruce at around £20M, which even after taking the English premium into consideration and that he had a massive four years remaining on his contract seemed more than a touch steep. For all that he’s a quality prospect with plenty of room to develop, when you start dealing in those kinds of figures you expect a household name, and Henderson—for all the ink, both virtual and real, that’s been spilled on him over the past few weeks—wasn’t an especially well known name outside the Stadium of Light.

Still, though the fee may have been high, most didn’t think him a poor player. In fact, Henderson is almost universally considered to be at least quite good: A versatile attacking midfielder, a more highly regarded Jonjo Shelvey with a fair bit of Premier League experience for his age and a player who created the fifth most scoring chances in the entire league over the 2010-11 season. Amongst the many players linked to Liverpool early on in the transfer window, amongst the likes of Ashley Young and Stewart Downing and Charlie Adam, it would have been hard to argue that it wasn’t Henderson who appeared the most promising English name being churned out by the rumour mills.

Even then, however, £20M would have seemed too much, even if a significant portion of it had been dependent on Henderson achieving certain performance benchmarks. Especially when it would mean a lot of money spent at a position that could hardly be called one of Liverpool’s greatest needs. Sunderland had in the past, however, shown an interest in David N’Gog, and earlier in the summer Liverpool had made it clear that he could leave if he found another club. As long as that club was willing to pay £8M for him.

It was a valuation of the Liverpool striker that many fans baulked at, thinking it signaled he was far more likely to stay than to go. But of course, in a world where Jordan Henderson—as good a prospect and decent a player as he might be—is given a valuation as high as he was, David N’Gog’s price tag suddenly seems a little less unreasonable.

And, as it happened, Sunderland’s past interest in N’Gog was rekindled while the clubs negotiated, leaving the two rather inflated price tags to at least somewhat cancel each other out in a cash plus player exchange that will see around £12M and David N’Gog head to Sunderland for Jordan Henderson. It is also believed that a not insignificant portion of the fee remaining after N’Gog’s valuation will be dependent on Henderson reaching certain performance benchmarks. Just how much of the fee will be determined by just how good Henderson ends up being isn’t yet, and may never be, entirely clear. No matter the finer details, though, going from something in the range of £18-20M for the Sunderland starlet to a fee around £12M plus a player whose time at Anfield was likely at an end no matter what is worlds apart.

It’s still a touch high, perhaps, but then one can get into the issues of English players demanding a premium and that Henderson had four years remaining on his contract. It also seems likely that unless he’s a complete bust, most of that fee could be recovered by selling him on again. It’s still a gamble, of course, but given N’Gog’s current situation with the club and the likely high resale value for Henderson no matter what happens at Liverpool, it’s hardly the gamble it could have been.

The players’ medicals still need to be done, and both N’Gog and Henderson need to finish negotiating terms, but by all reports those are mere formalities and this is a deal that’s to the satisfaction of all parties.

For Liverpool, it means a potentially exciting midfield prospect with enough experience to step in and at least play some kind of role with the first team next season while being young enough to continue his development as part of Liverpool Football Club. For David N’Gog, it’s a chance to see if those flashes of promise he showed can turn into something more with a solid run of action that he was never likely to get at Liverpool. And for Sunderland, it’s a good chunk of cash to add to the £18M they received for Darren Bent as they begin their rebuilding efforts.

Quite how it will all pan out a few years down the road is anybody’s guess. For now, though, best of luck to David N’Gog at Sunderland, and welcome to Liverpool, Jordan Henderson…

Some nice passing in that carefully crafted montage, Torres would have lapped up that kind of service. I do wonder where he's going to play in our current side, Gerrard, Kuyt and Lucas are going to be the first names on the sheet when available. Carroll and Suarez are definite starters, so that leaves one spot for 4 or 5 players.

  • GalahadThreepwood

Have to agree with Ismael Jawad...let's give this some time to work out before coming to any conclusions.  As fans, I'm sure we would all love Liverpool to go out and sweep up the big names in the market--Turan, Hazard, Coentrao, etc.  But as Real Madrid showed us a few years back, you don't build a title winner by stocking it with every available star player.  A winning side works best with one or two stars and a solid cast of supporting players.  We have a bona-fide star already in Steven Gerrard, and we have several budding stars in the stable (Suarez, Carroll, and Meireles).  What we need now are good players who can contribute on the field and add depth to the squad.

This is what Kenny is doing.  He's been through all this before and knows his stuff.  As Tony Barrett pointed out on the official site the other day, fans weren't crazy about John Aldridge and John Barnes when they came in, and look how that team turned out.  I'm not ecstatic about Jordan Henderson, but I trust Kenny to put together a team that can play attractive, winning football, and at the end of the day that's what matters.

Ah...the silly season! Love it! Hate it! Never been more exciting to be a Redman, so people.....just ENJOY and relax. The King knows the Way. Welcome to young Jordan.

Jordan Henderson does have the potential to a great player....he is athletic, energetic and industrious, willing to run all over the place, does whip in nice crosses as well as spot a pass.
(which can be seen by the scoring chances he created last season). One of his main points is i believe his versatility, able to play in the middle the park to give that bit of energy and the drive to get forward. He is also able to play on the right given his crossing ability.

He may not have the flair to go pass defenders with ease, but he has that bit of pace to drive pass his opponent to spot a defence-splitting pass or to whip in crosses. His passing range certainly is adequate, which i believe is about 80-81%...the numbers may not impress you but lets not forget that he is in-charge of Sunderland's set pieces which would mainly be the bulk of his misplaced passes.

Henderson is only 20 or 21 this year, a regular in Sunderland's first team and he did play a major part in Sunderland's rise in the first half of last season. His form did drop after his début for England, coincidentally how Sunderland did drop from Europa league challengers to nearly relegation candidates last season. A reason to ponder about his importance to Sunderland perhaps?

His young age(younger than Spearing by the way) meant that he is still learning and growing. With both Kenny and Gerrard guiding him along his budding career, i believe only great things await for him. In my opinion, he certainly does resemble a young Gerrard, a huge raw diamond just waiting to taken care of properly to shine brightly. His potential is indeed limitless from the looks of it and lets just hope that he can develop into a great player. Certainly he has time on his side, but we as fans should not be quick to judge him if he is unable to produce the goods and label him a expensive flop.( We should learn this from the Lucas leiva story)

For those out there who doubt his ability to play for Liverpool, if you are only an average player, you will not have strong links with the top clubs like the two Manchester clubs( Unless you go by the name of Bebe....) He is also one of FIFA's young players to watch and highly regarded as one of  England's brightest prospects.I would not be surprised that he can be as good as Gerrard in the future if he does fulfil his potential....

So Phil Jones for 16 million or Henderson for 13 plus 7? Sorry Sir Alex but i will take Henderson anytime.

While I love you all dearly, this is why I hate the transfer window.

  • This. This a million times over. I wasn't logged in when I clicked "like" so I want it known that I like this.

signings have just started.  King Kenny and Damien have a pretty good idea of what's going on.  Lets wait to see what happens before we start bitching bout them not knowing what they are doing.

  • Seanster

Betting suspended on Phil Jones signing today. Liking the way we're doing business.

  • Apparently he's having a medical at United according to various reports on the net.

EDIT: Looks like a done deal now. United have agreed to splash out 16M for the youngster's services. Would've loved to see the reaction to that had he signed for us.

  • Seanster

Yep, I got that one on the money alright.

  • FUCK FUCK FUCK!! I can't believe how many people are already slagging the guy off!! All I keep hearing is how wonderful Turan is or how we should've bought Honda. Fuck it. Both of them aren't coming to Liverpool and I don't give a flying fuck about it. Be it Henderson or Carroll, both of them are quality buys who were linked with the EPL's top dogs in the past year or so and both ended up at Liverpool. Wingers will eventually be signed, just give it time. Why are some of you making it seem like Comolli chose to sign a midfielder instead of a winger? The transfer window's been barely open for a week FFS. If anything, it shows that the people in charge are ready to put the money where their mouth is. Sorry about all the fucks, just had to let it out.

Sunderland confirmed the news on their official website: http://www.safc.com/news/20110...

    And so did Liverpool http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news...

  • Yann

I have to agree with you on this. The continental transfer window doesn't even open until 1 July, so what on earth do people expect to hear, other than British signings. Taje a chill pill people and have some faith. The Reds are on the rise.

  • So we have sold the player who sold more goals than Torres last season.

He scored the goals when we most needed them rather than when Hodgson needed them the most in Europa League. At least we dint get kicked out in the qualifiers thanks to him.Just having a look at our Midfielders.
LUCAS    SPEARING    MEREILES   GERRARD    SHELVEY    HENDERSON

    6 players. 2 positions.
Latest rumours say Adam is on his way. That makes it 7.

Why? This is stupidity. Commolli not learning from what he did in Spurs and Arsenal.

I think we need a winger, not Henderson kinds who are CM's but can play wings, these guys are supposed to play on the wings when your main winger is injured.

Why hasnt there been such link ups with hazard, turan, dszudsak? I for one want Hazard he is the next big thing. I dont mind paying 25 million for him.

  • king kenny

Keep on chatting all your scenarios, its like listening to andy gray! Are you lot manageing liverpool? no didnt think so leave it to kenny! I bet you lot are the ones who were saying he had been out the game too long and i bet most of you are from wales or somewhere like that. Just sack boring everyone.

  • Mike

Welcome Jordan. Please be more dynamic than Andy...

  • Harry Kewell

There's a really good article that tries to provide a bit more logic behind the buy other than JH being young and English - http://paisleygates.com/?p=412...

It looks like NESV are taking a similar approach to what they did in baseball, mainly using statistics to identify the best young talent. Henderson fits the bill in this regard (chance creation) but I can't help thinking he's mainly one for the future instead of next season.
    In KK we trust.

  • CharlieFineman

LFC dot tv don't mention the transfer, Noel.

  • cheekyfellow

Guess Aquilani will be getting sold for some sort of fee, even if it doesn't match the original asking price in the contract.

I like this deal. With Stevie G getting older, we could use a promising star, but we'll see. Just curious, we need a left back desperately.

I would splurge more on a winger right now as opposed to a left back. Kelly, healthy, to me is formidable. Although, that doesn't negate the fact we still need another Left back..dammit.

  • I'm not to fancy about C.Adam either, more over he's 27, which is... old I guess. The last thing the team needs right now is another Xabi incident (Barry for Xabi, anyone?)

  • As far as I'm concerned, this is the best possible deal that could've been brokered. N'Gog was as good as dead wood at Anfield and the club had clear intentions when they labeled him with the 8M price tag. He was going to be used in any potential deals as a makeweight, no more no less. Henderson isn't a household name, far from it, but in my opinion he's one of the most exciting midfield prospects England has to offer at the moment. He and Rodwell, valued at 25M himself, might end up as England's midfield cornerstone in the not so far future.

No official confirmation as of yet, so we all might want to hold our horses for the time being.

  • Dirk Kuyt Industries

The strategic implications seem a bit more disconcerting. If we say that Lucas, Suarez, Gerrard, and Carroll have to be in the team, that leaves two remaining spaces. How do you fit Kuyt, Meireles, Henderson, and the likes of Downing, Adam (ugh), Mata (please?), or Bojan (lol) into those two spots?

It makes you feel like JH is at least something of a longer term project (which, fine by me).

  • Tom Foolery

Quality analysis DKI, and the most quality "name" I've seen in a long while. I would hire Dirk Kuyt Industries to do my intense labor, anytime.

It does bring about a seriously confusing tactical scheme though. I tried to dissect it (above), and I just have to think that Jordan is there to add depth. FSG and the coaching staff are more than clever, and have to have noticed the frailties that arise every year, in every team (Arsenal *cough*), due to a lack of quality depth at the end of the year. I wouldn't start Jordan over Lucas, Stevie, or Raul at the moment, and I have to feel that he'll be eased into the fray in the Carling Cup and whatnot. Versatility and potential could be his key to breaking through though, see: Jonjo Shelvey.

  • Dirk Kuyt Industries

    Heh, thanks.

Totally agree with your take on the 4-3-3. I'm not too familiar with someone like J. Enrique's crossing ability, but Johnson certainly fits the wingback bill down the right (and honestly, Aurelio's quality out left, save for the staggering lack thereof in his lower limb musculature). If only Baines played for any side but wrong Mersey.

Overall, I think we'll see a *lot* more squad rotation (of the non-injury induced variety) in midfield than the past couple years. Which, honestly, all the good clubs have had the luxury of. This year, United had 8 mids that got at least ten matches (Nani, Valencia, Giggs, Carrick, Scholes, Park, Anderson, Fletcher), Arsenal had 9 (Fab, Sami, Song, Diaby, Walcott, Arshavin, Rosicky, Denilson, and Christ 3.0 (a.k.a Gareth Bale 2.0)), and $ity had 8 (Silva, Toure x2, de Jong, Barry, Johnson, Milner, Vieira). Those are obviously a bunch of "big" names, and I feel top players are fine with it as it means fewer injuries and more success.

Right now, with Stevie G, LL, J-Hend*, Raul, and Maxi, even if we added the likes of Downing, Adam, AND Mata, we'd be basically on par with the new Big 4 (sad face) in terms of midfield depth.

Obviously, that raises questions of financial viability/the time, date, and location of J.W. Henry's son's exhortation of a so-called "fuck" "face" to fellate him, but I'd rather pretend those things no longer exist la la la la.

*hip hop career** clearly not in his future
    **ergo, not next R-Bab

  • Yann

Ah, don't you mean Tom Hicks's son?

  • Dirk Kuyt Industries

Financially, it actually makes good sense to me. I look at like this:

Minus incentives, the fee is 9-10 million from what I've read. Let's say Henderson is a complete bust - the club will still rather easily be able to sell him for 5-10 mil. before Henderson hits age 25. That's the curse and blessing of being a hyped English player at a young age. If we write off Ngog (and I do) due both to his own relative lack of development and the presence of Suarez, Carroll, and, fingers crossed, Wickham, it's not nearly the huge financial risk (they spent 20 MILLION for their first move?!?) many will paint it as. The other aspect to consider is though Ngog was "valued" as an 8 mil. pound player, 8 million pounds of "make weight" is very different from 8 million pounds of actual money. Nobody was going to give us 8, or even 4-5 mil., straight up for Ngog, I don't think.

Back to Henderson.. again if you're fine with totally disregarding Ngog, which I understand won't be true for everyone, it's, at worst, a ~5 mil. pound risk for a 20 year old who, as Noel mentions, created the 5th most chances of every player in the Premier League. I like that.

  • Sue

    W.A.S.T.E. O.F. M.O.N.E.Y.

    :(

  • LouisvilleRed

5/10, Sue.  Cash outlay was in the range of £12-13m.  At most overpaid by £2-3m.  League-proven, long-term contract wrapped up, massive room for improvement, capped and young.  He'll be great in Red.

  • Russell

I disagree.  I believe we are paying 13 million and giving them N'Gog, and in return we are getting a player who will most likely play in our midfield for many years to come.  Also, from these early transfer rumours it looks as though King Kenny is building a team (mainly English) by purchasing young English talents.  That is, if we do end up sealing the Wickham and Jones deals.

  • Tom Foolery

Yea? I don't think rash is a strong enough word to describe that comment. Of course, maybe rash isn't a strong enough word to describe the transfer of young Jordan to The Pool.

I think my point is that its too soon to decide how good he is, or what value his football will provide. Carroll is looking like a waste of money so far, but there's plenty of time to dispell that impression.

  • mardia

After hearing 20 million pounds thrown about, this deal--and the ridding of N'Gog--isn't looking too shabby at all. I've said this before, but if Kenny and co. think a player's good enough to play at Anfield, I'm trusting their judgment, and now all it remains is to see how it turns out.

These Charlie Adam rumors, though. Not thrilled about. ESPECIALLY if we end up losing Meireles, as has been suggested on Twitter. I know, I know, it's CRAZY. But I don't really get why we're going for Adam in the first place.

  • Ed

    MEIRELES MUST NOT GO

I'm coming out of an in-law avalanche and am admittedly out of touch during the last few days, but, you know, what the fuck and stuff.

  • mardia

It's just some crazy rumor started on Twitter by, apparently, a SUPER unreliable source, so, y'know, truckload of salt coming with it, but yeah, the immediate reaction is to clutch at your chest in horror, because what the fuck, MEIRELES MUST NOT GO.

  • Mike

Please provide a link or something to this twitter rumor. No to Charlie and Raul must not go!!

  • Khaine

Buxton... It wasn't from a source, simply an educated guess that signing Adam would lead to another midfielder being shipped out. He's gone back on that and now considers Shelvey going out on loan a more likely alternative.

  • Tom Foolery

That just doesn't seem right...The Adam/Raul thing that is. I also don't find Adam that attractive (as a footballer), and was thrilled that Henderson was purchased instead. So, I'm going to continue feeling that way for the time being.

I wonder what all this means for the future of The Aqualung...

Also, I've been wondering about what Kenny and Steve see as our go to formation(s). I've thought the 433 would be ideal with a packed midfield, wingbacks providing width, a centerpiece forward (Andy), and two versatile forwards making interchanging and cutting runs from outwide or drifting inward to link play (Suarez and Kuyt for the time being). In this manner, getting a "winger" is less likely, and bringing in someone like Bojan makes more sense. So, the all winger rumors are confusing.

I still see LB as our primary weakness too, and I can only hope that those incharge do as well. We NEED a marquee signing to fill that void, and oh what a void it is.

What this transfer does tell me though, is that perhaps things aren't as behind the scenes as I was hoping. Maybe Phil Jones (would be a good signing in my book) and Downing are next to arrive. I do approve of the swiftness, for sure. Better to get them in and let them acclimatize before the (pre)season.

  • mardia

Ugh, I meant to say LB over there, drat. You get the idea, though.

  • mardia

Aquilani's getting sold. Just don't see him ever coming back to Anfield, sorry to say.

I really like the idea of 433, I don't know if it's gonna happen. And good grief, we REALLY need a decent CB. I'll take Enrique, but my dream signing would be Leighton Baines (yes, I know, never gonna happen).

I'm not thrilled about the media getting wind of the Henderson deal, but the fact that it wasn't as insane as we previously dreaded (20 million fee looks ridiculous, 13 million and offloading N'Gog is much more reasonable) is making me feel much better. But yes, the swiftness is VERY encouraging.
