Joe Cole Loan to Lille Confirmed

joe cole lille signing loan

My fellow Liverpool followers, our long national nightmare is over. Joe Cole has completed a loan deal with French club Lille that will see him head to the League 1 side for the coming season. Liverpool will, unfortunately, pay roughly 60% of his bloated salary over the coming year, a fact that shows Cole’s priorities lie in receiving a pay day more than in receiving consistent first team football. But at least now, if he continues not receiving first team football, somebody else will be paying 40% of his bloated salary while he sits around looking winded.

But Joe Cole is totally a winner, totally cares about playing football, and totally intends on making the French champions winners at something or other now that he’s there but with his old club still paying 60% of his salary because he cares about playing football and not money:

I am a winner. It did not work at Liverpool for many reasons and it hurt me…

I like the continental football and it’s exciting for me. I love challenges. It’s a different playing style and I hope that people in England will watch me play and get more interested in French football!

No word on whether or not he likes the rap music. Meanwhile, Evian have also confirmed that they have signed Christian Poulsen after Liverpool made him available for free to any club willing to pay his wages.

Ngog Deal officially confirmed, still not too keen on Bellamy

  • kenny

Ok I am going to make a Joe Cole goodbye compilation... But don't get too excited, it's only going to be about 35 seconds long...

  • poorscouserbobby

with 1 clip showed in slow mo 3 times?

  • Suarez from the car park...

are we down to just Degen left on the training ground (from the dead wood)?

  • Ed

Looks like it--you'd think a loan/sale for Brad Jones would be worked out simply so he could get some first team football, but other than that (assuming Ngog gets his move) everyone else is taken care of.

  • redtrev73

I'd like to retain the high moral ground here...but The Perpetually Winded One's patent money-centredness as well as his undeniable crapness in a red shirt means that I cannot....He's GONE!!!!! Tales of Comolli and his Machiavellian machinations re. Hazard and first-refusals are all very well but basically...He's GONE!!!

Sayonara also to The Hair, The Greek, The Chunky One and, perhaps, Wash-N'gog. All good lads no doubt...but our squad is a less dead-woody place for their absence.

  • "No word on whether or not he likes the rap music."

I'm going to miss all those merciless Joe Cole jokes on these pages. We still have Degen though..

  • NotTooXabi

Really, who's left for Noel and Ed to take jabs at...please not Aurelio, he's fragile.

  • Ryan

This is only somewhat related to Liverpool...but is there any hope that Jose Enrique could get a  national team call up after his performances at Liverpool? I know that Spain is overflowing with talent at the moment, but the only real competition for the left back position is ex-red Arbeloa and Nacho Monreal, who is the same age and playing for a lesser club (even though Malaga is in Spain). I don't consider Capedevila as competition because he's surely not going to be around after Euro 2012, maybe along with Puyol. Liverpool play a good enough of a passing game to fit in with the tiki-taka, and he's solid enough defensively to emulate Capedevila and allow Ramos to attack on the right. How has he not even had a national team debut?

  • Guest

I imagine del Bosque will give him a run out at some point in the future, though with Capdevila not even taken in the current squad, it's a little odd that Enrique wouldn't have been given a shot now, especially considering the form he's shown for us.

That being said, in a selfish way I am always glad to see our players rested for club play, so Enrique not being selected is something of a blessing. I was sort of excited when Meireles picked up that tiny knock against Exeter because I thought it would allow him to be rested for league play after the break. Evidently that is not the case. Its nice to see that we have players of international quality and all, but it can be hard not to be selfish sometimes...

  • Suarez from the car park...

    Good point.
nothing like a big club to up your profile.  Guarantee a call up for him before the season's out.

  • Ryan

This could quite possibly be the most entertaining thing to watch: to see Joe Cole sit on the bench to a 20 year old. Joe Cole's money-hungry smile is just as bad as Nasri's. Actually, Manchester City in general is just disgusting. Sorry. I'm quite fed up with all the moneyness. Mainly because of the transfer window. The player's true colors come out at this time in August. Can't wait 6 years until Manchester City comes knocking on our door to buy our Liverpool homegrown back 4 of Flanagan, Kelly, Wilson, and Robinson and they get a warm "no thank you". I'm mostly dreaming though...

  • Red2death

I just read that the Cole deal involves us getting first refusal on Eden Hazard.  Anyone seen any truth to that?

If that's the case, it's a fantastic deal!

  • Geza

It was mentioned in a French paper as well...might be some truth in it (gossip culture is not that big outside the UK...)

  • I tweeted something along those lines. Wishful thinking, that. Not because I like, know, or anything. If it's true, Comolli is up for sainthood, surely.

  • Far as I can sort out, there's no truth to that. If it sounds too good to be true, etc., etc.

  • Red2death

    Dammit.

I kinda wanna believe it anyway though.  Why let reason get in the way of anything.

    Hazard's coming next summer...
    Hazard's coming next summer...

  • Righteo, Guardian's reporting that in fact the first right of refusal wasn't just a crazy rumour and getting it is why Liverpool was willing to pay 60% of Cole's salary. Colour me shocked. Also Cole will commute to training from London on the Eurostar.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/foot...

  • And never mind all that now, as the Guardian's gone and changed their story to no right of refusal.

  • What about this Bellamy deal makes sense?!

  • Let's "check some boxes":

    1.) He's British (Wales 62 caps, 16 goals)
    2.) He has EPL experience—Since 2001 roughly:
                                            Apps(Goals)
    2001–2005 Newcastle United 93(28)
    2005 Celtic (loan) 12(7)
    2005–2006 Blackburn Rovers 27(13)
    2006–2007 Manchester City 27(7)
    2007–2009 West Ham United 24(7)
    2009–2011 Liverpool 40(12)
    2010–2011 Cardiff City (loan) 35(11)

3.) He wants to play for LFC (Well so do I, so f*** off)

    ...

    4.) He's old (32)
    5.) He's psychotic (http://www.guardian.co.uk/foot...
    6.) He's expensive (£90K a week at City)
7.) The deal might be for TWO years...

    8.) Consolation prize: it's a free transfer

    Net win? I think not.

  • Suarez from the car park...

backup winger.  Downing can't play all the games and this way can rest up during the cup runs.

  • Ryan

I guess it's good news to hear that all-knowing wikipedia says he's going to QPR. Heh.

  • Wishful thinking I suppose. It's going to take me awhile to accept Bellamy as an LFC player again...

  • Red2death

I'm guessing he's decent quality and he's free.

As and when Andy Carroll gets injured, we do need some experienced backup up front.  Would prefer if it was a pay-as-you-play deal like Owen at Utd, but I guess wages aren't as important to FSG as Kenny getting the right man - and evidently they think Bellamy is the right man.

I'm not complaining.  He ain't Aguero, but he'll be an asset nonetheless.  Besides, if Carroll's too injured to start a dressing room brawl, who will?

  • Suarez from the car park...

He's a backup for the wing I reckon, rather than striker.  Maxi isn't a winger.

If he's still got his pace then that will be the reason why they want him.But agree, it's still odd.  guess it's experience.

  • paul

Gerrard can play on the right, no need for Bellend to return.

  • Ed

Experienced cover, short-term deal, Ngog headed out.

Also batshit crazy, might be in it mostly for money, and jury's out on top-flight ability after being away.

    So you know, it's cool.

  • Yeah, I'm just not much of a fan of locker room poisoners. I like the buzz about the place right now and I think Bellamy might take away from that. Besides, shouldn't there be some holdover/ill-will between Bellamy and the LFC players remaining at Liverpool? Surely he must not be too popular with our captains.

  • ejbauer11

Well, Riise's no longer there...but if he does come then we should start him against Fulham

  • tGryffin

on the right wing as well? Just so that he can get the scuffle going again with Riise? Don't forget the 9-Iron Bellam.

  • jjhukill

I just typed "football loan deal wikipedia" into Google to learn more about how these types of transfers work.

LFC's Wikipedia page is the second link that comes up. As it should be.

  • Purify_the_body

So the nightmare is 40% over, back to 100% nightmare next summer. lol

  • Suarez from the car park...

yeah, we really get the butt end of these loan deals, but beggars can't be choosers and the overall wage bill has been seriously mended.

Only Aquaman and Cole on loan and Degen playing satan's son (his contract seems to have outlived entire civilisations), is certainly a result.

Aqua should be gone permanently by the end of the season, and Cole might get offered a contract somewhere if he can pick it up this year in a slower league.

Overall you have to say Comolli has not only done pretty well, but he's taken a hatful of work off Dalglish's desk which can only be good.
