Internationals Preview: Tuesday’s European Qualifiers

Serbia is set to face the Faroe Islands in Group C action, while Kazakhstan heads to Azerbaijan in an exciting match-up of countries that can’t qualify for next summer’s European Championships. Plus there might be a couple of games that you’ll be vaguely interested in because hey, it’s football, which is better than nothing. Unless a Liverpool player ends up injured, in which case it really isn’t.

First things first: Wrapping up the Brazil v. Ghana match played Monday evening in London. Lucas anchored Brazil’s midfield for the full 90 in a 1-0 win over Ghana at Craven Cottage, though it probably should have been more with Ghana being down to ten men for more than a half. After Chile v. Spain ratcheted up the intensity on Friday, this was another friendly that was far more intensively competitive than the vast majority of international fixtures that are supposed to actually mean something.

Getting back to the qualifiers, for those whose local options don’t give them access to the game of their choice, ATDHE, StopStream, and First Row Sports should have things covered…

Finland v. Netherlands 6PM GMT/1:00PM EST

The Dutch have first place in Group E wrapped up completely while Finland needs a win to keep their hopes of participating in next summer’s Euros anything more than mathematically alive. Hopefully, in a game that doesn’t matter to the Dutch in any way, Bert van Marwijk takes it as a chance to rest some of his key players after failing to do so against San Marino on Friday.

Slovakia v. Armenia 7:15PM GMT/2:15PM EST

With both sides still fighting to qualify in either first or second in Group B, Martin Skrtel’s Slovakia can go a long way towards ensuring advancement while Armenia get the chance to prove they’re the real deal.

Denmark v. Norway 7:15PM GMT/2:15PM EST

After taking off last Friday’s round of games, Denmark hosts Norway in a hugely important Group H contest, and Daniel Agger is expected to start. Currently Norway and Portugal stand in first and second in the group with thirteen points after six games out of eight played, while Denmark is third with ten points but have only played five matches. A Danish win, then, would put them in a very strong position to at least advance to the playoff round from second, while a loss would nearly put them out of contention.

England v. Wales 7:45PM GMT/2:45PM EST

For those interested in watching as many Liverpool players as possible play on Tuesday, Stewart Downing versus new boy Craig Bellamy on the flanks at Wembley offers by far the best entertainmentis likely all you’ll get when England takes on Wales since I’m an idiot who didn’t notice Bellamy was out on accumulated yellow cards. Then again, it’s an international match and most would rather if the Liverpool duo spent it clipping their nails on the bench or sat in the stands like Craig Bellamy will in fact be doing and it’s kind of embarrassing now that I used him for the header image. In any case, Andy Carroll seems unlikely to start given Fabio Capello’s current insistence on picking in form players instead of just the big names, which makes complete sense from an England point of view after years of watching Frank Lampard start in midfield to little effect. More negatively, Capello also used the Bulgaria post-match to offer his opinion on Andy Carroll’s lifestyle choices: In short, he’s not a fan.

Scotland v. Lithuania 8:00PM GMT/3:00PM EST

In the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s draw against the Czechs, talk was that Adam being substituted after 79 minutes was a precautionary move. Later, however, it came out that he had picked up a slight but unidentified knock earlier in the match and would miss out against Lithuania because of it. By most accounts, this mystery injury isn’t an especially serious one, and so far at least there’s been no suggestion that he’s likely to miss Liverpool’s trip to Stoke on the weekend as a result. As for Danny Wilson, after coming off the bench to concede the penalty that dealt a major blow to Scotland’s chances of qualification, it seems unlikely that the Liverpool youngster will be any less a spectator than Adam in what should be a winnable match.

Spain v. Liechtenstein 9:00PM GMT/4:00PM EST

Elsewhere in Group I, Pepe Reina will continue the trend of Liverpool players starting on the bench as the group leaders set out for a likely mauling of the group trailers. If you enjoy goals, passing, and brawls, though, it should make for decent viewing, with the added benefit of not having to worry about the fitness of the Liverpool player nominally involved.

We’ll be back later on with any breaking news on the Liverpool front and a look at Molde, Liverpool’s next opponent in the U19 Champions League, the NextGen Series. In the meantime, try to get whatever joy you can out of Tuesday’s qualifiers. And enjoy crossing your fingers.

Of Course Dirk Kuyt has to play major minutes in a completely meaningless qualifier against an inferior Finland team....

  • Suarez from the car park...

Wilson's hit that proverbial small fish in a big pond thing since arriving at lfc.  His best game so far has been a centre back performance, but he's going to take the season to settle down.

It isn't natural for a player of his age to be comfortable at EPL or International level. The pen will make him feel not too clever, despite the Czech guy dragging his leg over his foot, but he's got to keep his chin up and keep working and he'll get there.

I'm surprised he hasn't gone on loan somewhere, but that may happen this/next week when the league transfer window thingy opens.

  • Latortillablanca

he needs a loan for the confidence, but i honestly think he's destined for the door.  i dont think there's much between ayala and wilson, and if ayala wasnt good enuff.... plus we'll get to see more of Wisdom who is an intriguing player to say the least.

Denmark v Norway --> Bane of my existence this 6th of September.

But seeking comfort in history...I discover that on this date in 1995, Baltimore Orioles shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. plays in his 2,131st consecutive game, breaking "Iron Horse" Lou Gehrig’s record for most consecutive games played.

May the gods favour us and return Agger to Merseyside unscathed and ready to Ripken for LFC.

  • Latortillablanca

im quietly confident this is agger's year - so much so he's goin into my fantasy team for vermaelen... or maybe i jus have a twisted thing for perma-crocks...

  • Guest

You use center backs in fantasy? I usually go the all-full back route myself.

  • Latortillablanca

vermaelen is TITS in fantasy, man, but he's never healthy...i got enrique and baines, just need a CB that scores - Agger gets it done. hopefully.

  • Bob

    Jose ENRIQUE.

On a fairly random and depressing international football week. Check out this link that gives all LFC fans another reason to hate beloved Man Utd defender Gary Neville. Enjoy!

The difference between ET and Gary Neville?

One is a short, fat, ugly, scrotum faced creature and the other just wanted to phone home.

  • redtrev73

Mate, far be it from me to preach to anyone about what to read but my ample experience of the blog you mention has led me to the conclusion that the author is a self-publicising reactionary who pushes his own negative agendas and courts controversy. Say something he disagrees with and he edits or deletes it. Say something that upsets his prissy disposition and he bars you...tragic. All that said, the piece you link to is atypical in that regard....

And by the by, what a horrible slander-slinging little rat Neville is...

  • lfc80uk

Totally agree with you mate, this is the joker that urged all Liverpool fans to get behind Hodgson, even when the team was languishing in the relegation zone. Its all coming back to me now... And I respectively withdraw the link. A week without Premiership football does crazy things to a man :S

  • Gally

Oh how right you are redtrev...about Neville AND the joker behind LiverpoolKop...

  • Geza27

Not expecting much from tonight's games except of-course a Swiss victory against Bulgaria...

In other news, did you guys hear about Rafa launching his own website (www.rafabenitez.com), which will include among others regular updates on his thoughts on football. So what about a Rafa guest post on the Liverpool Offside??

  • redtrev73

Good call Geza27. Any chance of trying to make this happen, Ed and Noel? Long-shot maybe, but it would be quality, no? Imagine Tea and Crumpets with The Goateed One...

  • I suspect that's a little above our pay grade, though I can't imagine we'd say no if it looked half-way possible.

  • lfc4eternity

    Is it me?
I can't stand International football...boring, jingoistic, Press fever, then hopes are always dashed (not mine, I know England are crap) and players inevitably come back injured.

It seems that for example England support at games consists of fans of lower league clubs (just look at all the banners...Don't see any Pool, Manc, Arsenal etc...all Hemel Hemstead and Bradford supporters club/s)
Can we get a campaign going to finally rid ourselves of national teams and replace the world cup with a PROPER World Club Championship every 4 years, with a co-efficient based on the previous 3 years results to see who qualifies? (we already have Champs & Euro cups, so just scrap the International Euro's and Copa's etc)

On another note, interesting to hear Kenny's reaction to Fab's critique of the Geordie?

    Over to you.

    Cheers

  • PDubz18

International football is always better as a bandwagon fan.

  • lfc4eternity

Oh yeah....and THAT 'band' from Sheffield...please, just say no!

These banner pictures are getting creepy

*Here's a good video: Carragher lists, in his opinion, Liverpool's top 5 transfers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

  • Tom Foolery

Do you have a link to the Capello quotes on Carroll?

In short just isn't goo enough during this lull. I'm actually trying to waste my time here, Noel.

  • paul

Not that I'm a fan of how we tend to play when Carroll is on the pitch, so I'm clearly not his greatest fan, but Capello is really starting to piss me off. This is the second time he's had a go at Carroll via the rags. How come he knows so much about Carroll's lifestyle? You'd think the "press" would be all over him when he goes out on the piss. Any drunken antics would soon be all over their covers.

Maybe Andy needs to quit the international scene, telling Capello to bog off while he concentrates on his club fitness and form.
