Have you heard about that cool new European competition?

By: Ed | November 24th, 2009

Soccer UEFA Europa Cup

Surely there are hundreds of clubs who would be envious to take part in the Europa League (and I think hundreds of teams started in the competition), but for Liverpool this is surely the capstone on a month of disappointment.

The win at Debrecen was anything but a foregone conclusion, with Liverpool needing to scramble to escape with the 1-0 win. Some curious substitutions as well, but at least Aquilani was on the pitch for…a minute. Good run out, son. And we have confirmation that Andrea Dossena is still alive.

Lyon couldn’t convert their chances late in the second half, largely due to the goalkeeping of Sebastien Frey, falling 1-0 on a first half penalty. Lyon looked more dangerous in the second half, with Puel bringing on villains Lisandro Lopez and Cesar Delgado, but couldn’t do Liverpool the favor they needed. Now Lyon need Liverpool to beat Fiorentina at Anfield to secure first.

There’s really little left to say after such a disappointing stretch for Liverpool–injuries, inconsistent form, and all-around indifference surround the club, as well as most of my cerebral cortex. Even the goals at Anfield against City on Saturday were met with muted applause, and at times all you could hear were the City supporters. Whatever the case, it’ll be a fascinating few months.

Surely now the calls for Rafa’s job will again ring out, with the club failing to advance beyond the group stages for the first time in his tenure at Liverpool. This will likely bring about the Rafa apologists, which will bring on disgruntled players (oops, too late), and Martin Samuel’s chin-less, scruffy-faced columns…

Hopefully the injuries will begin to right themselves, Liverpool will hit their stride in league and the remaining cup competitions, and there will be plenty to learn from this stretch.

    Ed,

Yeah, I certainly didn’t mean to suggest that you were necessarily looking down at the Europa League. I just think that when a big club ends up there, the response tends to be “well, it’s disappointing, but we’ll just get out there and win the UEFA Cup/Europa League as a consolation.” That’s motivated by both (a) a positive outlook, and (b) an underestimation of how difficult the competition is. It’s only natural for a big club to look over the competition and think that, given the lack of “big name” clubs, the competition should be fairly easy, but I think recent history shows that that can really come back to bite you.

Like I said, though, I’d love to see Liverpool make at least a deep run into the competition, as I think it would be good for the club and good for the competition itself.

If we want to look for a positive, Ngog once again got himself on the score sheet and while I’m not about to suggest that he is even close to Torres’ level, he is certainly improving over a relatively short period of time.

Aquilani’s lack of match time is definitely beginning to look troubling. What will he need to do to get some credible time on the pitch? Once again we show a distinct lack of cutting edge yet our new, expensive midfielder with the attacking impetus that we need gets all of two minutes.

underestimating our opposition is one of the reason we’re going to have to give this wretched competition a go .. might be nice to knock Everton out .. they have one of those crappy stadiums Martin was referring to ..

Woah, I never realized it, Liverpool weren’t wearing Mbt shoes during the Champions League this year! Their posture was horrible, their gait was off, they should have ordered Mbt Chapas!

And I can say that I definitively don’t love that prospect, Jack. But schadenfreude suits you.

but yeah I am extremely glad you guys got eliminated, what can I say, oh I know how about KARMA’S A BITCH!!!! YEAH thats right, did you forget about my team already> I still remember the agony I suffered because of how fucking lucky you got against us, thats right the first goal took a nice deflection while the second goal was meant as a cross which so happened to bounce nicely off the post and then in. Oh and what a better way to top things off in the second leg then have ibra miss a sitter, cruz miss another sitter and then that wretched burdisso get sent off, and the icing on the cake was when torres scored that goal. But HA look how things have turned around, were still in the CL and you are NOT and we are top of the serie A, 5 points clear of juve! Isnt it funny how all of the teams who have been eliminating us over the years have gone on to get in even worse positions then us?? Your guys’ season is basically over, man united is trailing chelsea, valencia and villareal arent even in the champions league and the last I heard of milan we were showing them a la barcelona how to play football.

Don’t mind The Troll lads, he’s 12 years old (no joke) and obviously Daddy let him back onto the internet after he was grounded for a month for talking Shiite on this website last time. And i don’t know why he’s laughing because Inter lost and aren’t in great shape to qualify either. You may get to face them again and give them another humping (fingers crossed)

At least we’ve all learned something–Inter are part of a UEFA-fueled vengeance fantasy, which entails producing mediocre results in European competition while teams that beat them previously methodically fall to the wayside, mostly by passage of time.

dont mind antonio he just got off his period and has been quite bitchy lately, (I think thats because his beloved milan couldnt beat marseille :D ). The best thing to do when he gets like this is to just not talk to him because if you do he just makes the situation worse, and I would advise you not to respond to this antonio because if you do then you are only demonstrating that your “maturity” (if we can call it that) is as good as mine. Lol sorry for all this acting like a 12 year old BS, what can I say I needed to vent after the barcelona match! Kind of like Antonio just did with his post

dont incur antonio’s wrath because he will bombard your blog page non stop with comments about how much more mature he is even though he was the one to react in a negative way to what you were saying (because thats REAL maturity for you). If he does anything that annoys you then just show him this vid:
