Gerrard’s Injury Setback, Formations, and Other Monday Notes

gerrard liverpool hospital cast injury

It’s Monday, which means you probably don’t need an excuse to get your drink on. But just in case you do, that’s a current picture of Steven Gerrard there on the right. We’re pretty sure it’s not a Halloween costume. But more on that in a little bit…

* Against West Bromwich Albion, having Henderson tucked into the middle worked at both ends of the pitch. Yet on a number of occasions when the Baggies did manage a spell of possession, he displayed the same tendency to chase into the centre of midfield that early in the season led to trouble by leaving his fullback isolated. While it didn’t lead to any problems when he went wandering on Saturday, it has to be acknowledged that that had less to do with the play of Henderson or Johnson and more to do with West Brom not offering the sustained attacking threat shown by sides like Sunderland early on.

After all, there was much talk after the Norwich match about how if Liverpool had only won, the massive gulf between midfield and defence and the lack of any real defensive steel from either Adam or Gerrard would have been a non-issue. And here, perhaps, there is a sign of just such a situation playing out, as Henderson’s performance at times showed the same weaknesses he was rightfully criticised for early in the year and yet with Liverpool winning those faults have become much easier to overlook. Over on Oh You Beauty, however, Nate is primarily concerned with the offensive side of Saturday’s game—those positives that were exploited instead of the negatives that weren’t—and the way in which the combination of Johnson and Henderson on the right contrasts to that of Enrique and Downing on the left, and from that standpoint there does seem far more room to take encouragement from the developing pairing.

Still, in the short term at least, it’s a duo that could easily be found out by stronger opposition, with many of Saturday’s perceived positives in attack becoming extreme negatives in defence depending largely on the outcome and regardless of any virtues the approach itself might have—or lack. The possibilities of Dalglish’s emerging, lopsided, preferred formation spoken to by Saturday’s approach are intriguingly broken down as one would expect, but that those early season weaknesses quite obviously remain can’t be overlooked, because for all the good that was on display at the Hawthornes, against stronger opposition Henderson still seems likely to leave his fullback exposed. Then, the topic for discussion would have been Henderson remaining a defensive liability instead of an exploration of attacking promise, with the performance itself largely the same.

* Moving on from West Brom tidbits to news of Liverpool’s academy prospects, as Jack Robinson has signed a new contract with the club that signals his continuing integration into the first team. With Jose Enrique appearing to solve the club’s left back needs at least in the medium-term, there have obviously been fewer chances for Robinson this season than there were towards the end of the last, but with Fabio Arurelio’s contract running down there’s a good chance the 18-year-old could find himself as Enrique’s primary back up come next season.

After last year, many would have thought of Robinson as being only steps away from regular first team football, and that may not be the case any more, but at a position where most players don’t begin to peak until their mid-twenties, Robinson has plenty of time to refine his skills and grow into the eventual starter most seem to think he will become. In fact, as Damien Comolli points out, Robinson’s biggest competition for the starting left back role at Liverpool in the future is more likely to end up being a younger developing fullback instead of any current senior player, with Brad Smith in particular pushing hard at a position that seems as though it could be well stocked for the next decade at least:

We’ve got one or two more good [Academy] left-backs who are probably as good as Jack was at their age. There will be competition for Jack in a few years. The most important thing is that there’s talent coming through. Hopefully the future of the club is bright on that side.

* Back with fully established first team players—or at least ones who would be established if they could stay fit for more than five minutes—there’s news on the Steven Gerrard front. And it doesn’t look good. It also doesn’t offer nearly as many opportunities for smutty double entendres as his groin dong. Leading up to the West Brom match, talk was that he’d picked up a slight knock to his ankle in training. Then it became an infection. And now he’s been seen leaving hospital on crutches and with a cast on his right ankle that runs nearly up to his knee.

At this point, it’s almost certain that he’ll miss the game against Swansea on Saturday, with about the only silver lining being that after that it’s time for the latest interminable international break, with England set to play a meaningless friendly against Sweden and to be slaughtered in a meaningless friendly by Spain. After that, however, Liverpool faces Chelsea on the road, Manchester City at home, and then Chelsea on the road again in the League Cup in a week and a half stretch poised to play a massive role in determining the longer-term success or failure of the 2011-12 season.

We’ll be back with breaking news as the day moves along—especially if it gives us the chance to talk infected groins instead of ankles—but in the meantime, while you sneak “fun” sized bags of candy you really don’t need and try to figure out how to cope with this latest injury setback news…

I'd like to imagine that Robo will inherit the role from Enrique over time.  With all the Stevie drama it's nice to have reassurance over future players.

  • redtrev73

Oh for fuck's sake...Stevie's ricockulous injury-fest is starting to become a pain in my groin dong. Look at the simultaneously sheepish and agonised head on the poor bastard.

Particularly salient point raised by Noel about our Hendo-satisfaction levels being directly proportional to the number of points garnered... especially given the likely inclusion of the young man in forthcoming Gerrard-free sides.

  • Red2death

My major complaint is that Liverpool aren't playing often enough.  It's been 2 days since I could sit my fat couch potato ass down and watch them run circles around some opponent, and it's going to be 5 more days before it happens again.

What am I supposed to do in the meantime?  Drink?  Well yes, but what else?

And then after Swansea it's an international break filled with more pointless news, accusations of racism, and more than enough time for Agger and Johnson to get re-injured and Bellamy and/or Carroll to shatter our hopes that they're actually stable characters now.

Man, I love a good rant...

  • Suarez from the car park...

So, Hendo isn't the real deal yet.

Stevie I read somewhere had to have his ankle drained.  So it must have come up like a melon. You know, the Gala types (who the hell names melons anyway.  Like who has the job of melon namer, so that when someone comes up with what they think is a new type of melon, do they just come up with a name, or, do they say, here's one for the melon namer while grabbing their hat and coat and striding urgently out the door heading for the branch office of the International Melon Federation (IMF, probably the same clowns dealing with Europe's unauthorised overdraft issue).

    I digress (again....)

So, Stevie's ankle.  I wonder if all the anti-biotics and stuff he's been on recently has knackered his immune system - supposed to happen with ABs right?  Hence his mild injury/bruising might  lead to inflamation, fluid etc, though still just an infection.

the cast is clearly just to immobilise it to allow recovery/prevent further damage.  The question now is how long it will take to heal given early complications that make it an unknown quantity.  My thoughts are that I expected some kind of groin dong niggles in recovery anyhow, so in some ways it's no worse than expected assuming recovery is not too problematic.

    Other stuff for me.
The media went nuts over Bale again this weekend following the Welsh Simian's 2 goals against the mighty miscreants and misfits of QPR and the annoying Yorkshireman.  Apparently it's his first goals since early in the year which I found hard to believe, but was pleased to hear it given the quite ungenerous nature of my, well, nature.

Anyhow, I looked at Spurs' record and they've dropped points against Stoke, Newcastle and were given early season wedgies dished out by the 2 Manchunian Candidates.  That vulnerability made me feel good about our chances.

For our stumbles, you have to add Sunderland and Norwich though we have yet to play City and we did better at ManUre.
Arsenal have picked up but also dropped points all over the shop.  I still reckon they are a bit brittle in defence thanks to Wenge's rather bizarre transfer policy of not strengthening and only eating Special K for breakfast.

Nothing to say about Newcastle except that apparently their recruits are also misfits according to a guardian article linked here recently though raw spirit has not been lacking.  That article also reflected on the media's proclamation of Wenge's genius having 'discovered' the obscure Theirry Henry and Viera, part of the 1998 World cup winning squad (game I watched in Boise, Idaho on my West Coast trip all those years ago when my Westfalia went through 5 engines!).

That summed the media up for me.  Once they associate a stereotype with a club or individual, they milk it ad nauseam and never let the truth get in the way of tired stories.

Here's to Hendo's development and more Maxi time.

  • Amtosh

Well... to be fair, Wenger was Henry's first coach at Monaco so could claim to have 'discovered' him prior to the 98 World Cup, and he signed Vieira from AC before 98 when he wasn't an established player.

Nevertheless, I completely agree with the media's inclination towards reporting stereotypes and proclivity towards lazy, cliche-driven journalism.

Suarez is a diver!  Fergie said so!  (repeat incessantly).

  • Momomca

You are right, with the overdose (massive injection) of anti-biotics of fourth generation last time his immune system has been weakened somehow. Fans must face it,from now on Stevie is no longer the same, any bruise or injury would be a major issue for him.Medically speaking there are alternate remedies under development to cure the likes of Stevie but no result is guaranteed. Hope I'm just wrong an wish him quick recovery.

  • poorscouserbobby

according to the Registered Nurse of a wife, (I get broken all the time, she's nice to have around, also the hot/naughty nurse thing, but I digress..)  The large dose of antibiotics could have had an effect, but not in the way you speak. The body has natural flora/fauna that is on our skin, in our mouths etc, (good germs) that might have been damaged by the large dose of antibiotics, there-by opening him up to possible infections from a cut or something along that lines, However the way the clubs medical staff is, highly professional and all, the likely-hood of Stevie G, Captain Fantastic, Leader of Men getting a cut and it not being taken care of properly cleaned etc is unlikely.  Long term usage of antibiotics has been shown to loosen ligaments and tendons opening them up for damage.  I do not see how an infection, unless it was a BONE infection (bad news) would warrant a cast.. - End transmission from afore mentioned Nurse/Wife.

my bit.. this is all a conspiracy by Chelsea and the scum and Howard Webb.  Particularly Drogba, and David Luiz.

  • Latortillablanca

you had me at 'hot/naughty nurse thing'...

in all seriousness, what kinda odds you think you'd get right now for carra outlasting stevie careerwise...  just puttin it out there.

  • poorscouserbobby

  • Suarez from the car park...

    alternatives?  To antibiotics?  Pray tell....

  • Latortillablanca

    this is all very depressing.

  • Tom Foolery

Ween is hands-down my favorite band still touring (right up there with Phish). I'm going to see them for a three-day set on New Years. A perfect distraction from the mindlessness of the silly season.

    CISSE LIKE A BOSS

man... usually i dont condone using terms out of contxt, cuz u know, its the 21st century, and there's always a better word out there than curse words, in particular ones that can offend. but disclaimer aside, this perma-crocked stevie bullshit is fuckin dreadful already...

  • Ed

Yeah, we don't really condone them at all.

Edited to sound sophisticated or something.

  • Latortillablanca

no doubt.  where would i be without u, ed...

  • Ed

    Probably flourishing.

  • mardia

I refuse to believe Gerrard's injury is that bad. Mostly because the media have already started to walk back their dire predictions of how his season is screwed, Liverpool are doomed, blah blah blah, and instead are simply reporting the truth...Liverpool are just waiting to see what happens in the next two days. Also because I refuse to believe anyone's luck can be THIS shitty.

In related news, whoever has the voodoo doll of Steven Gerrard in their possession, put the pins down and back away slowly from the doll.

  • Suarez from the car park...

    lol

"Move away from the doll, move away from the doll....."

  • Red2death

Isn't that the new Adidas Tech4000 Performance-Enhancing Cast?

We'll see Gerrard against Swansea with a right leg capable of winning a World Cup all by itself.

  • Suarez from the car park...

Now you're just being silly.  League title maybe.....
