DIC out of takeover bid; now if no Gillett purchase, then what?

By: Jim | January 31st, 2007

If you can follow my bizarre (and probably flawed) logic, maybe the silver lining in DIC withdrawing its takeover attempt means Liverpool still has a shot at winning the league? This Dubai purchase was supposedly a slam dunk. Everything seemed to be set in stone.

Now, it looks like all the assumed knowledge is out the window.

Admittedly, I didn’t at first like the possibility of what a Dubai-based ownership group swimming in billions could mean. Success like Chelsea’s isn’t worth the price paid. But Liverpool as presently constituted cannot succeed in the long term. The new stadium must be built. Funds must be injected in Rafa’s transfer accounts to bring in at least one, maybe two, big-time player the quality of Gerrard or Alonso – at different positions, of course.

Have Liverpool’s shareholders emulated Arsenal’s at times maddening passing? In the search for too fine and perfect a result, the chance to score has been lost?

I too think there is a positive side to the DIC deal falling through. While I appreciate your Arsenal metaphor and see the danger of rejecting the best in a vain search for the perfect, I am giving the shareholders the benefit of the doubt in this case. Perhaps Gillett has less money but more of a shared vision for the club. Perhaps they think DIC will turn Liverpool into a Real Madrid or, to bring a good example from the States, the New York Yankees: plenty of expensive talent, but no team chemistry and a forsaken farm system.

Let’s hope whomever ends up buying Liverpool will have the fragile balance of money and vision required to bring a club success at the pinnacle of European football.

I think its terrible the DIC deal falling through. At least the dubai group had a life long liverpool supporter who has stood on the kop many times at their helm. The US takeover will just use LFC as a commercial tool. We wont have’nt have sufficient fund to compete. Have you seen how Gillete & hicks teams are doing ??? worst of all we have got an owner in Hicks who finances GEORGE W BUSH. Having such a man goes against the dignity of LFC
