Dalglish: No New Senior Players

By: Noel | January 30th, 2012

With Liverpool set to face Wolves on transfer deadline day, there was always some worry on our end as to how we’d manage to fit in both match coverage and any last-minute transfer insanity. Turns out that the club and Kenny Dalglish were fully sympathetic to our concerns, as today the official site put out a brief statement from Dalglish that under no circumstance will any new senior players be brought in before midnight in Paris on Tuesday. So all those people hoping for a last second bombshell involving Edinson Cavani or Mauricio Isla or Andy Carroll can either breathe a little easier or work themselves up into a moderately annoyed state as applicable.

Kenny Dalglish is adamant that Liverpool will conduct no business in what is left of the transfer window.

The boss expects no new additions to the first-team squad at Melwood before the window closes on Tuesday night.

He said: “There’ll be nothing happening here in the transfer window, in or out.

“There’s no need to ask any questions about transfers or speculation or anything else.”

And so concludes the dullest and least interesting transfer window in recent memory, at least for Liverpool. Given that in the past the official site hasn’t put stories up about new youth signings, there’s every chance that the first official word anybody will hear of Sporting’s Joao Carlos Teixeira will be when he scores a goal for the reserves, though in any case he isn’t a player ready to make a difference in where the club ends the season. As such, it appears as though it will be up to last year’s big money signings to fully and finally come good for the club to have any kind of shot at the top four finish John Henry called the club’s minimum goal for the season back in the summer.

On that front, we’ll be back in a little bit to get you ready for tomorrow’s match against Wolves, fingers and toes crossed for a continuation of the determination and effort shown over the past two games instead of a dreaded return to the sub-par form often shown against lower league opposition.

hiii...firstly, i don't understand why kenny buy to many young player but not use them, like sterling, suso, carlos and others. i think is if u don't have a transfer budget why not you use all the hot prospect player we got, do some gamble to the player like suso, sterling and coady or carlos. you kenny must follow the arsene wenger step to use and believe all the hot prospect young player we have. don't waste all the money from the transfer budget to player like carroll. i think henderson and adam we use them at the wrong position. henderson is not the original wide player and adam is better to the steve G position. another one if u don't have a right wide player why not you use glen johnson to that position, we got many talent for the right back. so push johnson to the attacking role, look like gareth bale at spur, he not the natural left wings attack (he is the wing back) but harry know gareth is the attack minded so their try to be wide player and succesfull. so if kenny don't bring liverpool to the champion league this season i think he should go out from the position and bring the good manager like martin oneil at sunderland now.

WOW, we beat wolves 3 _ 0.  But this same team lost against the last placed team on the log.
Carroll and kuyt now the heroes.  Do me a favour.
Please calculate how many points we lost because tweedle dumb and tweedle do could not finish in front of the box

Martin Hansen leaves the club. Gulacsi seemed to be above him in the talent stakes, so its not suprising.

    Good luck young man YNWA

....Oh and in other news, we'll be seeing Krygiakos back at Anfield again! He's just signed a loan deal with Sunderland.

  • Latortillablanca

i gotta say im disappointed about this... hard to believe we werent in for one or two players, but i guess its good we're not overpaying for anyone... *sigh*

  • Momo

At least we'll stop holding our breath, and furthermore I'll stop reading those comments with written masturbation over the rumors on sites less credible than Nigerian lottery winning/lost relative inheritance scams.

On a serious note we seem to have plenty of new signings with a so called resale value, all chosen by the sabermetrics method by the way. So why the owners would bother themselves with new players given the most coveted ones are out of reach while the the second rated ones who seem to be available at a fair price are unlikely to have any immediate impact since their pedecessors already wearing our jersey haven't shone yet even after a whole year of a 'work in progress' for some of them.

Besides, if I were the owner I'd wait until summer to make a genuine assessment of the players I'd already bought without any new arriving stars from this window in the pack because any decent performances of the latter on an individual level can cloud my judgment even if they're completely fruitless on a club level.

My point is after sabermetrics the yanks will show us the tough part of their medicine come May and it's called ABC method,a method based on assessing personnel from top to bottom in order to sack the 20% less performing guys of the year.A bit harsh but efficient enough to keep everyone on his toes.

Though they're not knowledgeable in football business, both Henry and Werner are quick learners and their message if I'm not wrong is this one:

"OK, when we came here the club was stuck in a civil war ,we are grateful to KD for being able to  settle a truce so quickly, and nobody can deny he changed this club's fortunes after a hard work on every front and this is the main reason we showed him our commitment with huge cash injection last summer but you must know -and here lies the truth- big spending approach is both irresponsible and unsustainable."

That's the hidden message I'm getting from this quiet window transfer. At least that's the meaning I got from the movie picture "Money ball" based on the true life/experience of the inventor of Sabermetrics Billie Bean(Brad Pitt) . In the closing stages of the film Billie Bean is exchanging few words with Mr Henry and if you pay attention to what the latter said, he seems to have a mind which is ruled by two ratios:

    millions spent/points gained or
    millions spent/goals scored,

it's called return on investment. So both the manager and the players are under mandatory to work harder prior to any further spending step.
And here are some reasons to worry about our current situation.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Top-flight financial firm Deloitte have gone through the audit books and worked out how much the Premier League clubs paid their staff in the 2009/2010 season.

Deloitte collate their Annual Review of Football Finance using the financial records submitted by each club at the end of the financial year. The figure given above is the total of salaries and fees (including any contract termination payments) that have been paid to the staff by each club.

     Table for 2009/2010
    Teams—Pts----GF-- GA---Wage bill---Total revenues----WB/pt (m)
    1)CFC---86---103—-32—£174.110m---£209.500m--------2.024
    2)MU----85----86—-28—£131.689m---£286.400m-------1.549
    3)AFC---75----83---41—£110.733m---£224.400m-------1.476
    4)Spurs-70----67---41—£067.203m---£119.800m--------0.960
    5)City---67----73---45—£133.306m---£125.100m-------
    6)Villa---64----52---39—£079.974m---£089.600m-------
    7)LFC---63----61---35—£121.085m---£184.500m-------1.921
    8)EFC---61----60---49—£054.311m---£096.600m-------

The ratios show that Chelseas's business model is no longer sustainable, more than £2m/pt that's too much. And we weren't pretty far from the CFC figure, that's why the owners tried hard to trim the wage bill and to enhance our revenues by touring china.
Only Spurs seem to enjoy a relatively healthier situation.

    Table for 2008/2009

    Teams—----Pts—---GF-- -GA---Wage bill--- -----WB/pt (m)

  • Suarez from the car park...

great post.  Where the hell do Chelsea get their revenues from?????

  • Momo

    What was Rick Parry doing?

  • jpr

Interesting Kenny wanted no questions about transfers. Probably trying to head off any questions about the Guardian/Carroll article. He was setting up his previously used answer "do you have wax in your fucking ears"? Maybe he didn't curse but he was surely thinking it. I was hoping one of the Journo's would at least have the balls to ask him about it. Just to get to hear his answer. But, no balls.

  • Ryan

    No Tevez? awh. *OH DARN*.

really though. thank gawd. I prefer Carroll giving out all the noogies and manly shit during goal celebrations.

  • jpr

Another quality South American striker would mean a LOT more celebrating. I like celebrating and drinking better than crying and drinking. There's always gonna be a reason for banging down some Belgians, though.

  • Suarez from the car park...

So, I can't work out quite what this means, and am struggling with conspiracy and double meaning.

Kenny said a little while back he expected a quiet transfer window, so the question is why??????

A deliberate policy of really only buying in the summer because getting screwed on price is so much more pleasant with those warm balmy evenings to look forward to than it is in the deep mid winter.  Cup tied players, contracts not running down yet, yada yada yada.

But given we're a striker short [until the Big A gets his form together] and according to rumour we were looking at some players - at least we didn't rule out signings at the start of the window, then what happened?  The lack of goals is not in doubt despite Comolli saying the squad was complete.

    1.  Targets/clubs not interested [yet].
    2.  FSG expect current players to be coached into form and half a season isn't enough to go on.
    3.  in theory, we have the right numbers so we must sell to buy.
    4.  The money isn't there until the summer due to summer outlays.
    5.  The discipline of rarely allowing January purchases is something FSG believe in to sharpen the manager's decisions when they do spend.
    6.  FSG are not prepared to fund further purchases until more of the latest ones have been proven as good signings.  Otherwise they may hold someone responsible for those decisions and envisage a change in Dalglish/Comolli before other purchases.

4th place is going to depend on us scoring goals.  I don't see a signing as a luxury.

  • Geoff Twentyman

    1)
Without meaning to sound too negative, but which top targets are going to be interested in a move to Liverpool whilst we sit 7th? We're not covering ourself in glory at the moment.

4th is vital to secure the services of the top talents.

That essentially means continued scouring of leagues for young talent - a tactic that will serve us well in the future.

We'll only get a top target if the club they are currently at are in a worse position than we are!

    2)
Agree with this with regard to strikers as we have Kuyt/Bellamy/Suarez/Carroll - 4 strikers in varying form.

However, I think its obvious we're filling a gap on the right wing and there's bit of creativity required in attacking midfield.

Talk of DM's is all very well and good, but when Lucas returns we could be overstocked if we're not careful about the skillset of the player brought in.

    3)
Agree this could be a factor except the RW position.

    4)
We really don't have any idea of the depth of FSG's pockets or their willingness to spend. Each window to be assessed on its merits, but this could be very pertinent.

    5)
    Linked in with point 2

    6)
    Linked into 2 and 5

  • purify_the_body

    FUCK

  • Everyones understandably ecstatic after two big wins but lets not get our hopes up too soon. We have a habit of winning against the big boys and then drawing against the lesser sides. By all means let's go crazy if we go on a roll and actually beat the teams we should be beating, but history tells me to be cautious.
As for signings, i'm a little disappointed. We needed a striker (one okay performance from Carroll doesn't undo all the bad) and a DM - Carragher was playing as a makeshift for Pete's sake! It's understandable due to the inflated costs but I have a sneaky feeling it will come back to haunt us.

  • nebhamoo

No new senior players doesn't necessarily mean we won't be getting macherano back now does it?

That has to be my favourite rumour so far, the guy left claiming his family couldn't settle into the city and is now apparently back because his family no longer mean all that much to him apparently.

Love your work random transfer rumour mill. Names out of a hat determine which player gets linked to which club.

  • Zacmanje

Just hand in ur resignation letter daglish

  • nebhamoo

    I don't like you...

  • NotTooXabi

Not sure why you popped up on a Liverpool forum to call for the head of the sixth premier of Western Australia. Daglish has been dead for nearly a century.

  • poorscouserbobby

Well played sir. Well played.  *applause*

  • ejbauer11

Thank you for the much more level-headed (and wittier) reply than what I contemplated, NTX.

  • Prad

so we did sign Joao Carlos Teixeira then? I remember it was almost a done deal, and then the news dropped of a cliff like nothing ever happened.

  • Red2death

    Everyone's very positive now.

Though if we start sputtering in the league again, there'll certainly be howls of "we knew we needed a striker / holding midfielder and we didn't get one, now look what's happened...".  Of course technically we haven't stopped sputtering in the league yet.  All we've had are two good cup victories which will count for next to nothing if we don't actually win the respective cups.

Sorry, just had to spread the Monday cheer.

Here's to business as usual against Wolves!
(and by 'as usual' I mean overall usual over the club history, not necessarily our usual performance of late against relegation battlers)

  • justin

Well, the thing about momentum is that it goes as quickly as it might come.

So, here's hoping that we take our positive momentum and have it give us a little kick-on in the league effect because that would be very nice indeed.

  • Red2death

That would be very nice indeed.

And we need to learn how to get a result on bad days too.  Momentum and luck come and go, but it needs to be the case that on a good day we put 4 or 5 past Wolves, and on a bad day it's just 1-0.  We're not there yet.  But I trust we will be pretty soon.

  • Waiting for Sterling

Sooo, we can save our money now, make a huge push for top 4 and then have money saved for the summer to buy players that we can offer champs league. I think it's a good idea.

  • Suarez from the car park...

may be essential given the cost of CL quality players.

  • Seanster

Thats ballsed up my working day rightly. A morning of NewsNow staring has turned into an afternoon of doing actual work. I've been even clinging on to a double bluff theory and we're leading clubs a merry dance of a stand off before they bow to our outlandinshly low bids for their star players on the back of our "no transfers" dupe.

All my childish anticipation of a day of out and out transfer luncy tomorrow has been scuppered. Damn the King and his honesty. Unless of course he's treble bluffing......back to NewsNow.

  • NotTooXabi

I'm pretty Zen with letting this squad battle it out for the remainder of the season. Though I do feel that lack of midfield steel will be a source of disdain by year's end. But alas, the squad, as is, has enough to see out the year. Maxi, Dirk, Aurelio's corpse are all gone in the summer. Let them have a go at some trophies and helping us push for a Champions League place. As for the latter, the League Cup final does relieve a bit of the pressure in that if we win, we're in Europe and can make a run at 4th by going for wins rather than going for not losing (and falling out of 5th). At least, that's my theory. I also thought Ice T was brilliant in Surviving the Game.

I'd love to see some loans for a few fringe-ready-to-make-a-leap youngsters: Coady, Wisdom, Sterling, and of course, the Dark Lord. If Jonjo doesn't start on Tuesday (and he really, really should), then I hope he goes back to Blackpool or somewhere to get the minutes he deserves/needs/wants. But across the board, everyone agrees that reserve football is the John Travolta of the professional game. It's time to see where some of those talented youngsters are; it will definitely impact our summer spending plans.

After Wolves --> Spurs, United, 3rd Team in Liverpool, Cardiff Final, Arsenal. Tomorrow's set-up is going to be very interesting.

  • Khaine

The Ice T stuff killed me. Absolutely sensational reference that.

I'm picturing loans for the younger ressies next season; gotta remember many of them are still 17-18 and really could be playing in the U18s instead. This season is all about matching them up with senior players at less than a breakneck pace while they mature physically, all the while reinforcing our system of play. Would hate to see Suso and Sterling get their ankles molested by the predators of the championship at this stage of their development.

Also, why nobody ever mentions Adorjan in these situations surprises me to no end. Kid is class. Is it the Nemeth thing?

Jonjo is definitely first team material, and should get more game time.

  • PDubz18

I want Sterling to get a loan just so that I can watch him play somewhere!

  • Subscribe to lfconline for 5 pounds a month and you can watch all the reserves play :)

  • Suarez from the car park...

    in proper teams/games

  • justin

Ironically, this statement about no new senior players in January is only getting me really excited about what the plans could be in the summer, or at least, what I hope it'd be.

Let's hope the cup wins will drive momentum into our games and help for the push for 4th, certainly would help with signings in the summer.

  • PDubz18

Is Suarez available for tomorrow? Or is this going to be #8?

  • justin

I believe tmr will be the 8th and he'll be available thereafter.

  • ejbauer11

That is correct. Tomorrow is the last game of the ban.

  • ejbauer11

I'm buoyed: Arsenal and Chelsea are weak; Spurs faltering; January's ending. It's time to batten down the hatches and finish strong. We don't need any more senior players until this summer.

And since I'm high off the weekend's win and pretending that a stop-gap CDM is surplus requirements to finishing top-4 (notwithstanding all evidence to the contrary), I'm further convincing myself that Commolli, et al. are saving money now so they can spend it on a certain French striker come summer. Let me have my fantasies.

  • PDubz18

We make Champs League and anything can happen.
