Comolli Talks Transfers, Flanagan Re-ups, and Other Friday Notes

By: Ed | July 8th, 2011

flanagancomolli Friday’s here, I’m leaving town, I’ve come to accept Charlie Adam, and there’s a good chance that if I don’t get straight to the point I’ll say something embarrassingly lustful about Raul Meireles omigodilovehimsomuch:

* Following the signing of Charlie Adam and the extensions given to Glen Johnson and Andre Wisdom, Damien Comolli took a break from smiling deviously to chat with the offal about the the new boy, what the club’s intentions are in the transfer market, and his feeling about things have proceeded so far. A couple of the more broadly based questions and answers:

Liverpool have been heavily linked with a lot of players. This is our second signing. How happy are you with how things are going in this transfer window?

We are very pleased because the two signings we’ve done were absolute priorities on our list. When you go into a transfer window you always have X number of targets, and it’s very rare you get all of them. We’re lucky we’ve got two of our priorities. That’s good, and I’m sure there’ll still be a lot of movement, especially going out but also, hopefully, a few more coming in.

There is a lot of talk in newspapers about our strategy in the transfer market – is there a strategy and, if so, what is it?

There is always a strategy. It’s about players who we’ve identified through the year. You identify players in positions where you think you’re weak or, if not weak, you think you can get better or add an extra body. There is a strategy in terms of profile of players we want to bring in: the mentality, the attitude, the work ethic – and the age is also a factor. People think about the citizenship and passport – but this doesn’t really matter as much as what I’ve just said.

It’s always interesting to hear what the folks in charge have to say about the club’s dealings, but rarely do we get much beyond the surface, and, despite the probable rush to guess about who he’s referring to with the “going out and coming in” bit, this doesn’t seem much different. It’s relatively similar stuff to Comolli’s comments earlier in the summer when the Jordan Henderson deal was done, just without the focus on player nationality.

We’ve all known that Liverpool (or any club for that matter) look for players in positions where a weakness is present, that they look to improve in positions that they feel they can, and that there’s attributes that come into play when the club’s looking for talent. We’re certainly not entitled to anything more than the genericisms that Comolli’s proficient at, and from the looks of things we’ll have plenty of waiting left to do. Which, after the way things went in the past few years, is a welcomed, if occasionally frustrating, change.

* Three days, three defenders’ contracts renewed. Wednesday it was Glen Johnson, yesterday it was Andre Wisdom, and today it’s wunderkind John Flanagan. Pressed into emergency duty because of a plague of injuries at the back, Flanagan played beyond his years in filling a much-needed gap in the latter half of the season. He made a confident full Premier League debut against City at Anfield, and continued to perform admirably as part of a resurgent Liverpool back line.

Not to completely rehash yesterday’s discussion, but we can tentatively say there’s a depth in quality at the back that’s encouraging enough—Martin Kelly, Flanagan and Robinson were the vogue topics this season, but Wisdom’s coming up quickly, and Danny Wilson’s still got more than enough time to develop into a first-team regular. Just like that, a back line full of promise, all age 21 or younger, and three of the five mentioned here became regular contributors during the 2010-2011 season. The searches at center- and left-back won’t likely end, but there’s cause for optimism.

* We’re on the downslope of Adampalooza, and as such there’s some loose ends being tied up. First is the shirt number—Charlie Adam will retain his 26 shirt, with Jay Spearing vacating to take up the number 20. Jordan Henderson will take up number 14, which Milan Jovanovic stopped wearing in January, and Maxi will make the switch from 17 to 11, the number he wore during his time at Atletico.

The other closing-down of the Charlie Adam deal is getting the manager’s take, so today we hear from Kenny Dalglish about how he sees the Scottish midfielder fitting into his Liverpol squad:

“We’re delighted our patience has paid off. We tried to sign Charlie in January. Blackpool wanted to keep him, which is understandable because they were trying to maintain their status in the Premier League. Our interest never went away. Both the club and Charlie have been patient, and then Blackpool’s circumstances changed because they were relegated.

“We’re looking forward to Charlie being a success here. He made a huge contribution to Blackpool’s team last year and we’re looking forward to him making the same contribution here. We know what he’s got and that’s why he was such a success last year in the Premier League.”

There’s something to be said for the parties on both ends of the deal regardless of how much you like or dislike the signing—it seems that Adam had interest from a few different clubs but wanted Liverpoool, and, as both Comolli and Dalglish mention, the club were able to pursue and sign a target they’ve wanted for an extended period of time. It might not be overwhelming, but it’s at least a sign that Liverpool can get their man.

Welcome to the weekend, and tomorrow we’ll have a guest post from redtrev73. Look for that early on in the day, and barring any major news or developments it’ll run the length of the weekend. We’ll also be around, both here and on Twitter—if you’re looking to get in touch with Noel that’s the place, and I’ll be increasingly active here, mostly for alcohol-fueled debates.

Hope you all have a nice Friday and are enjoying the summer so far, and if not, there’s always some stonerized George Gershwin to get you in the mood:

I feel like its an unwritten law to not talk about Agger. Well he's fit now god damn it. I won't quit him. He won't let me quit him. Why won't he let me quit him?

Join the club--every time I start to type his name for a post, I feel obligated to include some sort of phrasing that includes "world class," "makes the squad better," and "might be a leper."

Moratorium on Raul Meireles omission from the Asian tour talk or else I'm stabbing someone.

  • Suarez from the car park...

lots of options for KK / SC. You've almost got to assume 2 injuries amongst the 1st 11 so this depth can work well for us.

The extra personnel have a very good age range so replacements should be less traumatic.
Last summer turned out to be horrific for transfers. Raul worked, can't blame anyone for Cole, but Hodgson must have run his eye over the others - Konchesky, Poulsen, Jovanovic - but their failures left us very light in playable players and heavy on the wage bill.

But we should have enough of a squad now to give KK consistency which we didn't have enough of in the last half of the season when we got 3rd in the form table.  So that, 1 or 2 more signings and the yoof, should give us enough to see the season through with high expectations.

I reckon the more complete squad guarantees us 9 more points playing at the same level that KK gave us but doing it through the whole season.

If we can really light up Carroll, it'll add 6 points on top, and if the wide boyz and midfield do a great job of support, pressure & link up with their own goals then another 3 points.

So we could achieve a strong top 4 finish on 77 points on my weirdo logic.

Beyond that it's about magic.  Not Derren Brown.  Magic between the team, in Luis, Dirk, Stevie, Adam's left foot - and KK/SC conducting an orchestra and the players dying for the cause because it's another 7 points to the title.

I wouldn't bet on it, but I wouldn't bet against it either.

That's the way to go.  Title ambitions?  Why not.

As far as I'm concerned, Kenny's team finished 3rd last season.  So why not a push for the top this time round.  Plus, no European distractions.

Roy Hodgson's Liverpool and Kenny Dalglish's Liverpool are two different entities.  Same name, different team.  The former is dead and the latter is now getting summer improvements.  I'd say those who think scraping a CL spot next season is a great success are aiming too low.  This LFC team to make them eat their words and then some.

Third? Unlikely, the honeymoon period ended and we lost the last two. Had there been five more games, would we have won them, or continued the losing streak with clueless performances?

We had a great run with KK considering where we were under the awful Hodgson. We've got a gem in Suarez, but now we have a new side, which is probably going to take some time to get working together. Carroll's inclusion on cost pushes Kuyt back out wide, clearly weakens the side. Kuyt to be replaced with a real winger to feed Carroll, or more dour players not fitting well to come? I can't see KK dropping Kuyt, and Carroll will start if fit. There's no indication Suarez will start wide to accommodate these two, so we'll probably get more disjointed play up front.

Midfield? New players coming in, some way over priced. Only 3 spots available. Crock Gerrard will start when available, can't see Lucas getting dropped for a while, so we've 6 players vying for 1 place. That's not going to work, more rotation and disjointed play from that?

Defence? Good kids, but slothlike Carra will start, Johnson will get a FB slot, clueless Skirty to get CB leaving 4 defenders after 1 FB position.

Can't say I'm excited by the new season, even with the biggish spending (not really that high when factoring in outgoing from last year). If we drop the oldies I'll be ecstatic, but does anyone really think KK will leave out the old school? We'll be like England, hard to beat, but not good enough to challenge. :(

"crock gerrard, slothlike carra, clueless skirty" what fascinates me is your claim to be an lfc supporter. maybe you would be better suited supporting a team of poulsen's, konchesky's or jovanovics. dropping gerrard or carra would be to drop the heart and core of lfc. yes they're 31-33 retrospectively and wont play forever, but i would never contemplate leaving them out of the starting 11 until they can no longer do their job on the field. and as for skrtel, one of the most consistant players last year. rethink your words possible. So you're saying that being a fanatical supporter and wanting the best players included in the starting 11 are incongruent? BS mate. I'd say any sentimental inclusions would be beyond foolish, but of course, what Carra lacks in finesse he makes up for in leadership and guts. As for Stevie, obviously he'd be first option on a good day, but he didn't have a whole lot of good days last season, you have to admit, and we saw exciting displays without him. Personally, I love Skrtel, sure he's had a howler or three but come on, in terms of consistancy, he's a pretty sure thing. But PLEASE GOD LET US GET A BLOODY WINGER!!

  • I thought our centre backs performed poorly both under Hodgson and Dalglish.  Skrtel is deceptively skittish and Carragher has lost more than his legs.  Gerrard may still have some explosiveness left but he won't have it in spades like he used to.  Hopefully he can stay sharp and fit this season as he undoubtedly is 'saved' for specific runs of matches.

Regardless of how we feel about the Charlie Adam deal, it is nice to see all the higher-ups at LFC saying all the right things and seemingly in sync over the transfer season. Very welcome.

Given some of the hoopla at other clubs over transfer issues (I'm thinking of Arsenal mostly) I think it's important for all LFC fans to remember that while LFC has a lot of work to do still in the transfer window, and a long way to go over the course of the 11-12 season, as far as we can tell, all of the first-team players still want to be here. When you think that just a few short months ago, we were all still thinking we'd be saying goodbye to Reina around this time, that counts for a lot.
