Bolton 3, Liverpool 1: There’s Bad, and Then There’s This

By: Ed | January 21st, 2012

steinssongoal
Bolton 3: Davies 4′, Reo-Coker 29′, Steinsson 50′
Liverpool 1: Bellamy 37′

Bolton thoroughly dominate Liverpool at the Reebok and coast to a 3-1 victory that boosts them out of the relegation zone. The host’s performance was certainly deserving of victory, and Liverpool’s was equally deserving of a loss. They were absolutely abysmal, and outside of a few minutes after Craig Bellamy’s goal, they looked as though they couldn’t be bothered to do anything differently. It was completely indefensible and, even with the shambles that was the early part of last season, easily one of Liverpool’s worst performances in recent memory.

One of the more difficult things to stomach is that, barring the presence of Charlie Adam, it looked like one of the strongest lineups available to Kenny Dalglish, with a fit Daniel Agger alongside Martin Skrtel, Craig Bellamy and Maxi both getting starts, and an on-form Steven Gerrard in midfield. Adam’s presence has been a worrying trend, but with Jay Spearing still out through injury, it was either him or Shelvey, and Dalglish has shown far too much loyalty to Adam to make his selection surprising.

And it all went to shit relatively quickly, with Mark Davies gliding through Liverpool’s midfield and slotting home the opener on four minutes, taking advantage of an out-of-position Martin Skrtel and tucking a left-footed shot past Pepe Reina at the far post. Typically it’s hard to say that a lead is earned after such a short period of time, but the hosts had pressed relentlessly since the opening whistle and were rewarded with a goal that was, in a departure from the way Liverpool has defended for most of the season, shockingly easy.

It would continue with Bolton in the ascendancy for much of the first half, highlighted by Nigel Reo-Coker’s well-worked effort in the 29th minute to give them a 2-0 lead. Chris Eagles played a nice little dink to the streaking midfielder, who controlled it with his chest before putting it past Reina. Once again, it was a surprisingly simple build-up, with Liverpool’s midfield providing no defense support and leaving far too much space for Bolton to exploit. Reo-Coker was left alone and Eagles wasn’t closed down, and it’s exactly what Liverpool deserved.

There was at least something of a response for the visitors, who were spurred on by the tireless running of Craig Bellamy. With little to speak of emerging from an absent midfield, it was down to Andy Carroll and Bellamy to create for themselves, which they did well in shaping Liverpool’s only goal of the match. The speedy Welshman latched on to Carroll’s flick and had only Adam Bogdan to beat, and his finish rolled over the line after Bogdan was able to clip it.

From there Liverpool were actually into it, pressing more and looking somewhat lively, and there was still hope that they could turn it around at the start of the second half. That quickly faded, though, with Greitar Steinsson volleying home from David Wheater’s header back across goal only five minutes after the restart. Liverpool were done, and other than Bellamy, completely rolled over. Bolton toyed with their guests the rest of the way, tapping it around for fun and relishing in only their second home win of the season.

*

Bolton supporters will rightfully be proud of their side today—they were confident and played with an urgency that I’d guess they’ve missed at times during a difficult first half of the season. David Ngog was especially impressive, working his socks off as the lone striker and proving a handful for a Liverpool back line that was out of sorts all night long. His play was in many ways exactly what Liverpool have been missing, so to see him do so well was a bit painful in light of Liverpool’s struggles.

Maybe the only downside of the night for Bolton, at least from a competitive standpoint, was that their victory didn’t come over an opposition who looked like giving them a game. In years past beating Liverpool was a fairly significant accomplishment—there was the history, yes, but even with the lack of titles recently it was basically assured that Liverpool were going to work their asses off trying to get a result. Didn’t always end up that way, but on the whole you could assume that Liverpool had some fight in them.

There was none of that today, with all parties involved, Craig Bellamy aside, colluding to churn out one of the most ineffective and shameful Liverpool performances I’ve seen. There will rightfully be serious questions asked of Kenny Dalglish, who had a week to prepare his squad but once again made a hash of both selection and tactics. And there will rightfully be serious questions asked of the players, who showed little justification for their inclusion and lacked any urgency in the final forty minutes of a match they were losing by two goals.

So it’s probably going to be a messy few days, judging by the number of comments in the matchday thread and Dalglish’s post-match comments. All we’d ask is that you at least remain somewhat civil while your hair’s on fire, avoid caps lock, any sort of poultry-based ranting, and try to remember that we’re probably all on the same side here.

Unless you want more Charlie Adam.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED CHANGE THE BOSS AND MANAGER!!!!!!!!!! IF NOT, DON'T WASTE TIME TO SUPPORT LIVERPOOL ANYMORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Why dun u just changed another club to support..?

  • You forgot to mention chicken this time, Generalissimo.

  • To be honest, I'm not surprised at all. A lot of us knew this was coming a long time ago. As soon as Meireles was shipped off, and we were left with overpriced, overrated and overhyped players a la — Downing, Carroll, Adam, Henderson — I knew this was going to be a bad season. Champions league was always going to be based on good fortune rather than the quality we bought.

For the first time in years we had money to spend and we wasted most of it.

Bar Suarez, and Enrique, with the occasional appearance from Bellamy, who in total cost nearly the same in total as one Andy Carroll, the transfer policy of this club has been absolutely abysmal since KD and Commolli took over.

I don't know whether Dalglish should be given until season's end, but I don't think a new manager could do a lot with nine days left in the transfer window.

Despite a Carling Cup semi, possibly final, considering we are 7 points of fourth place, with Chelsea likely to pick up the pace and Newcastle and Arsenal going to provide stiff competition for UEFA league, this season has to be considered a real flop.

  • Prad

I was glad to see Kenny angry after the match. Bolton wanted the win more, and that's unacceptable.

  • Etipok

i always thought ngog had good potential given we only paid £1.5m for him. yesterday he showed he is far better at leading the line than carroll.

  • I beg to differ.. while I think Ngog is a good player, and he is doing well at Bolton, our defence was collectively poor during the game..

In fact, I did not think Enrique had such a good game.. his cross was wayward, and for the whole match, he was doing more back passes, then trying to bring play forward..

  • poorscouserbobby

    Ed,

" There will rightfully be serious questions asked of Kenny Dalglish, who had a week to prepare his squad but once again made a hash of both selection and tactics"

    but

    "
barring the presence of Charlie Adam, it looked like one of the strongest lineups available to Kenny Dalglish "
While I can completely agree that serious questions should be asked of King Kenny, and the first team after such a dreadful display, I'm not sure what else the man could have done as you yourself stated earlier.  Sure, bring Shelvey on next to Gerrard, or drag hendo back and put either stewpot or Kuyt there.  I'm not sure which I would like more, and if either would have made a difference  Charlie Adamn has been watching too many St. Etienne highlights.  The clip starts with, "too many long and hopeful balls from Liverpool..."

In the interview linked above, The King was obviously disappointed and talked about how Liverpool were disrespectful to Bolton for not even showing up to play.  When asked about how a penalty would have changed the game, he shrugged his shoulders and basically said, the way we played... not really.  If we play city this way, I don't even want to watch.
     Bottom line:
Liverpool have a lot of work to do.

  • Suarez from the car park...

The only saving grace is put a proper defensive midfielder in there and the team changes completely.

It doesn't help the lack of guile or ability up front but at least it stops us looking like monkeys chasing the game.

I don't think it's acceptable not to spend anything in the transfer window but to be honest I can't see FSG agreeing to spend anymore while existing potential isn't realised.  And you can understand it too.

Anyhow, everyone lost this weekend that mattered except Chelski who drew, so 6pts is the gap to 4th.
Given our abysmal return on the last 6 games it's still amazing that it's in reach.

I have no confidence that we can make 4th though with our goal scoring.  Even 5th is a stretch.  And teams will come at us stronger than ever now.

  • johnny, i agree that a DM or perhaps even Spearing coming back for Chicken Adam might worked short term.. but seriously Adam REALLY NEED TO BE BENCHED.. he need to get it in his head that he cannot simply just keep thinking that he is an automatic choice..

Just look at that opening 15 - 20mins or so against City at Eitihad with Spearing at center.. we were so full of energy! After Chicken got in for the injured Spearing, BAM, the whole complex of the game for us changed!

Although its still only 6 points.. but I really do not believe we can reach 4th spot now.. Gunners and Chelskis are ahead of us now at the moment..

  • GoFigure

Isn't this game similar to the one against Portsmouth away in the 08-09 season? Supposedly weak opposition, 1-2 down. We were chasing 1st then, and now we are chasing 4th. Substitutions and bam, we win 3-2! Ah, 08-09 :(

  • Liverpaul

KK should be looking at scouting more young German talent - I live in Berlin and the ladies here are pretty freakin' amazing... but also the young German boys. The likes of Reus (now just unavailable having tferred to Dortmund ffs), Götze, Kroos et al are coming through their club's ranks, a wealth of young midfield talent that adheres to a pass and move philosophy so wonderfully displayed at the most recent World Cup and Under-18, 19 and 21 comps. and trumpeted by KK and co. I saw Reus single-handedly tear apart Hertha Berlin last year, but really he was just doing the basics very well and nothing outrageously impressive... oh, and he made runs into the box (Charlie Adam, if you're reading this...)! I recall seeing something a few weeks ago about Özil being surplus to requirements at R.Madrid, probably at CaughtOffside though so total bs. How can these young Germans be so fleet of foot growing up on a diet of heavy brot und bratwurst? I ask you.

  • Lis

"I live in Berlin and the ladies here are pretty freakin' amazing... but also the young German boys." - haha, the wording is great, especially the adjective describing the boys. But I agree, Germany seems to have a wealth of young talent with good mentality (would fit perfectly with FSG's vision) and players from Bundesliga can be very successful in the EPL.

  • Kev00

keeping with the current paradigm, I wouldn't be surprised if we grinded out a result against City on wednesday only to lose the title to fucking Cardiff or Crystal Palace

  • PDubz18

I don't think that FSG would be stupid enough to fire KK in the middle of the season, but if a world-class younger coach becomes available early in the summer I don't think that they would hesitate to replace Kenny if he ends up finishing short of Champions League. Sadly, I can't say that I would argue with them if they did.

  • I recall reading Chicken Adam's comment midweek that we should still be able to get Top 4.. I think he must have drank alot midweek.. we lost CL hope somewhere in last Dec already..

Is is me being critical of him, or is Chicken Adam one of the main core of our problems.. I mean looking at it this way.. he is so shite in his current role (whatever that is), that basically, no other team mates "dare" to be adventurous with him around.. Gerald especially.. G must be thinking: "Oh boy, I cant go up too often with Chicken behind me!".. he is pegging everyone back.. He cant string passes, his corner is worth 10 pound, he play like opponents are 1 mile from him, he is slow, clumsy, lumbering.. and most of all, his "tackling" is horrendous, and thats being kind..

I simply turn off the telly after he tried that "Alonso-styled" halfway line punt against Stoke at home.. :(

  • GoFigure

I think KD's post match talk was a step in the right direction.
He always defended the players against criticism, maybe this will make them realize that more is expected of them.

  • Prad

Bolton beat us fair and square, but what really made me angry was seeing how much more Bolton wanted that win. The passion and hunger was missing yesterday. We couldn't even keep the ball outside our third with the relent Bolton pressing.

Hopefully, it was a strong lesson that the players learnt, and maybe, just maybe, Lfc will go out and buy a player or two this window. I was happy to see Dalglish threaten the axe to non-committed players.

  • fastrail

True, the lack of desire is shameful. If you don't have at least that, you do not play for a club like Liverpool, where we fight till the end.

  • Oral Rohon

I have been saying for three weeks now FIRE DAGLISH NOW

  • fastrail

    Are you Roman in disguise?

  • purify_the_body

Cup semi-final against the top team in the league on Wednesday and another cup tie against our hated rivals on Saturday. What better time to fire the manager? Let's do it!

  • Oral Rohon

are you watching the same team i am watching

  • fastrail

    Bitch please. Let's hire chicken.

  • tony

We paid 35M to a lesser club and they are now one spot on top of us. That doesn't look very prudent to any football operator. I would never say a word that's offensive to the King for all the joy he brought us during my youth.

When Keegan left for Hamburg, I thought it was the end of the world. Then Kenny came and became an instant success and then a dynasty. Perhaps he nas not faced too much adversity as a manager then which might explain stubborness in starting inferior players. He doesn't seem bothered if it's appalling to the fans. This hurts.

The EPL has been dominated by the Big-4 in the past decade and the Big-6 in the last 2 seasons. The current separation can fittingly be called the Big-7. At least I can feel some comfy with it.

We are 16 points today both away from challenging the title and fighting relegation. We cannot say the current version of Liverpool has regressed because we are still above the rest of the non-Big-6 pack. This notion is irrelevant though.

We cannot say we improved either because there are 6 teams above us. It doesn't matter how much we improved. It matters only we have MORE IMPROVEMENT than MC, MU, Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and no-way-Newcastle.

Just do a roster match by position against these teams (exclude Newcastle) and most would agree we do not measure up. How many of our players are being sought by top clubs?

The King has to be a magician to convince the owners he can win with this version of Liverpool.

Now where the f*** is my bed?

  • purify_the_body

Actually, from January to May under Dalglish, we took the 3rd most points in the league. So we have not improved this season, we have gone backwards, particularly at home.

  • fastrail

And that's why I don't understand why some fans have said that we have improved this season. Not sure if blind or dumb.

  • nebhamoo

So just because I want to stir some trouble because well lets face it we all feel like throwing a fridge at someone at the moment...Charlie Adam right, well we all know he ain't worth the paper that his contract was written on, however, would you say Lucas has been responsible for Charlie Adams demise, by having the audacity to get injured for the season, because prior to his injury, Charlie and Lucas seemed like they would turn out to be a not too Xavi, partnership, especially when you added Gerrard into the mix...which I guess is my way of finding a way to blame Lucas for breaking all my hopes and dreams of title success this year...

  • ChrisLFC

Or Adam's faults have been even more exposed since Lucas has been out?

  • tony

Look at it the other way. If not for the slow and visionless dispossession prone Adam starting every match, Lucas might not have to run his lungs out every minute and got himself injured. Yes, we play 10.5 men every match.

  • brother jon

    10.25. On a good day.

  • jpr

    9.75 most days.

  • Very _Angry_Brand

Liverpool need Rafa BENITEZ! We can't rely on KD anymore!

  • tony

Hey, what's the problem? Our 7th spot is still safe.

  • Red2death

On the back of this performance, if we suddenly hit a major injury crisis and we were forced to replace the likes Adam, Hendo, Downing, Carroll their U-19 counterparts, I really wouldn't be that sad.

Would rather take a gamble on kids being thrust in at the deep end than go with consistently mediocre/bad 'senior' players.

  • Lis

They might also fight more for the win and not take their chance to make an appearance for Liverpool for granted.

  • fastrail

I've been crying for those kids for a couple of months now. Couldn't do much worse than the so called senior. If we are not grinding out results, why not take a chance with them right?

  • Travis Artz

Exactly.  Not to say that our back 4 haven't been great this season but I miss the fighting spirit of kids like Flanagan, Robinson and Kelly.  Those kids' spirit is priceless.  You can't buy that shit.

  • fastrail

Spot on. You could see the desire to prove themselves when these kids play. The seniors are not doing that right now, cause they don't have to be afraid to be dropped for the next game. They need challenge from these kids that will obviously want to prove themselves.

  • purify_the_body

Well, guys & gals, what can you say other than the truth hurts. We are the 7th team in the table and we looked every inch of it today. It was quite something to see the team suddenly start trying for real at 0-2...I guess those players have some pride inside somewhere after all. From there 'til the end it was 1-1, which may have been the result if our guys had made a serious effort from the start.

I wish I could say I'd torn my hair out or drunk myself silly because of this, but to be honest today was not that painful to watch, because we have looked disjointed and clueless in attack for most of the season, and the only difference today was that the back four joined in. We are still a team in transition, without a proven starting 11 or reliable formation -- and no closer to finding those things than we were in August.

For those who want a 'destroyer' signed, today was a heavy piece of evidence in your favor, as our three attacking midfielders converted into DMs were as stout as overcooked spaghetti in the middle today. We desperately need quality in midfield and to push Gerrard forward closer to the striker(s).

And of course, the sad thing is that Kenny already correctly identified all of our positions of need in 2011, he just signed players that aren't good enough to help. Keep signing players in the next 10 days and this summer. That's the only way out of this mess, and to avoid finishing 7th in 2012 and 2013...

  • CheekyFellow

Can we buy back Torres and Meireles, or no takesy backsies?

  • PDubz18

We already have enough misfiring strikers in our team, Meireles yes though.

  • nebhamoo

That was an "I want my mummy" kind of experience, not only by the players on the pitch but also every single Liverpool supporter on the planet watching. Who ever thought that You'll Never Walk Alone, would turn out to mean a bunch of dudes holding hands walking to their collective mothers.

Totally disgusted, totally beyond angry, and totally want my liver to be 18 again, cause the one I have just can't take any more punishment.

  • JAMES BOND

SEE!!!!!!!! ONCE AGAIN THE CHICKEN LIVERPOOL LOSE TO LOUSY TEAM AGAIN!!!!!!!!!! THIS BECAUSE THE AMERICAN BOSS JOHN W.HENRY WANT CHICKEN LIVERPOOL TO LOSE SO THAT HE CAN WIN A LOT OF MONEY TO PUT INTO HIS OWN POCKET!!!!!!!! • Well that answers my question about where this chicken stuff started...

  • Ed

    You did it!

    Now you're banned again.

  • nebhamoo

    No Ed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The guys holding our hoe hostage, please for the love of everything holy please just meet his demands and get our hoe back...because you literally can't plough a field of dreams without one...

  • fastrail

James Bond? This has to be a secretly coded message..

  • ChrisLFC

I cracked the code.  He's an idiot.

  • fastrail

    Holy shit I was right.

  • Lis

You know, we were actually all waiting for you show up. And "no more hoe for Liverpool" - now that made laugh.

  • fastrail

    No more hoe for him

  • Suarez from the car park...

    can I have his hoe?

  • Lis

I kind of hope he has no hoe at all.

  • Ryan

It's mighty quiet here. Thank God.

Kenny had some strong words in his interview. Any thoughts? I don't think he was too harsh at all, but I am afraid some headlines will spin his words against him.

  • Ed

Echoing other thoughts, and just adding that I think his typical style of interacting with the press might add a little bit of oomph to it--rarely does he show much emotion and provide any quotes that carry too much weight, but I think today called for it and he delivered.

Now it's a matter of doing some of that in the mirror as well.

  • crazyhorse

Ryan i dont think he was harsh enough! i would have slapped them around the chops and sacked them on the spot! guttless fairys grrrrrr!!!

  • I think two at least partially conflicting things. First I think that he was absolutely spot on. But then I think that we talked about 442 with Adam and Gerrard (or Adam and just about anybody) being a recipe for disaster back in the summer when Adam signed and also after they played together against Norwich and it looked kinda shit.

Then I think two more things. First that Adam, Downing, and Carroll have seemed the epitome of wildly inconsistent mid-table players who have trouble delivering consistent performances week in and week out, and that in the past few weeks they have at times appeared entirely, unforgivably, pathetically disgraceful. But then I think that these were the core players that Dalglish felt were worth spending a whole lot of cash monies on to drag the club back into the top four.

So, yeah. Spot on. But also it's rounding into a bit of a clusterfuck that goes beyond just the players, and I wish we'd seen more progress on other fronts from the coaching staff at this stage. And also Wednesday's City match offers an interesting clash between Liverpool playing up to the level of their opponent and Liverpool choking when things matter most.

  • fastrail

I think he had been too nice this season, always backing up his players and come up with excuses, which brings lazy performances such as this one. Imo he did the right thing today, to let the players know that they simply are not good enough and need to step it up.

  • Lis

Off topic, but after the game, every time I open this site and wait about 10 seconds I hear like this opera music and then a male voice saying something in a foreign language, am I the only one?

  • Ed

It's the Martin Skrtel video, Lis. Might not autoplay on all browsers, but does on mine as well.

Or it's the booze, which means you should keep drinking until it goes away.

  • Lis

Thank you, of course it's the Martin Skrtel video. I feel silly now.

  • That's unexpected and unfortunate—never autoplayed for me, and if it had I would have at least stuck it below the fold with a warning it did. Anywho, stuck the fold in now so at least those afflicted by the devilry that is autoplay won't be hearing voices.

  • I'm fairly certain I'm not hearing that. Though that might make me the only one.

  • Ryan

    Perfectly normal.

  • Luis Suarez dentist

Ha ha you found the right drink after all then!!!!   ;)

  • Lis

I'm not actually imagining it, but I did find the drink, yes :)

  • Gerard_moreland

Dalglish is the King, but he is acting like King Phillip of france just before they cut his head off, how can he not see how bad his signings are, carroll is a joke, adam will never be an alonso, and as for henderson being the nxt steve g were the hell did he get that from, come on the king get ride of the court jesters and get some good players. Not one of the players today played their hearts out because they were wearing the liverpool shirt and I think that is the problem, as long as they are getting their big big wages they don't give a fiddlers f**k, what is needed is a pay system, if u dont win u dont get paid, if u draw u get half ur wages if u win u get all ur wages. that goes for all employees, from the chairman down.

  • Kev00

the only thing that would make me feel good about january at this point would be if we managed a straight swap for charlie adam and xabi alonso.. i mean i can't wrap my head around why he's been an automatic starter for so long. does KK see something in him that nobody else does? is he trying to save face after putting so much faith in him early in the season? i think its glaringly obvious that he's nowhere near a top four player and his poor decision making/inconsistancy/hollywood long balls would better serve a team like bolton that needs to turn in an occasional performance to dodge relegation

  • crazyhorse

I cannot believe the crap the once mighty king kenny as bought,i cried when kenny came back last season as many other redmen and women did over a certain age,it was like a dream come true, like stepping into a time-slip vortex
and being 10 all over again, but it is slowly turning into a nightmare watching players who are and never will be good enough wearing the famous red jersey
we all know their names but just for fans who know jack s..t about a good player from a crap one heres my list of players to go Carroll,Adam,Henderson,Maxi,Downing, kuyt,Skirtel ...yes i know skirtel has improved but he still goes to bits to often when under pressure, now if you notice
most of these players are new so that begs the question who thought they were
decent players? i knew they were crap as did many fans but yet they still arrived,so either kenny or as i believe comolli can not be trusted and wearing my rose tinted specs i believe comolli is the guilty man! you only got to look at the shifty face of his,it has that mossad sly coniving look to it so if your reading this
message mr Henry i think a p45 should be on the way to anfield and a oneway ticket to dolesville, kenny do yourself a favour and distance yourself from the shady fellow and sell these crap players as soon as possible and do the scouting
yourself or just listen to the players the fans are screaming out for and when a name keeps popping up have him looked at,remember that this club really belongs to the fans, and as mr shankly said "its our lifeblood"

  • They are both Scottish, right? I'd hate to bring on the nationalistic paranoia, but I am running out of anything ration to put Ah-damn in the team sheet.

  • fastrail

Believe me, I also hate to bring on the nationalistic paranoia, but yeah I believe that to be the case.

  • Suarez from the car park...

It's odd given the whole statistical approach that Adam was bought.

If they're all deciding on players together then surely there would have been too many negatives regarding Adam.  And surely Comolli would have had a good selection of choices?

Or was buying EPL experience a deliberate strategy?

To then play Adam and Gerrard together and resurrect the problems of last year is poor judgement from Kenny, so obvious is their unsuitability to playing that role.

Stevie just goes forwards much too quickly and Adam doesn't know where he should be and his fouls are just embarrassing.

Hendo just hangs around hoping to be useful with little desire to really win.  He just hopes not to lose.

Carroll has lost the movement he had last year when he was joint top scorer with Berbaflop.
It might be the wrong training regime, it might be the injury has had a permanent or much longer lasting effect but he's definitely not moving the way he was.

I've seen people pushing a guy called Reges (Juventus?) but Dembele would be a good addition.  Or we could just use Agger or Enrique in that role.  I bet even Kelly could do a job there.

How are we going to pick ourselves up for Wednesday after that.

  • fastrail

Dempsey would be a good addition too, well at least better than Carroll.

  • Red2death

I always thought buying local was because of two things:

    1)  The cap on foreign players.
    2)  After Hodgson we needed players who could come in and make a difference immediately.  ie. Those who already had Premiership experience.

Evidently that's backfired in most of the cases.

I wouldn't be surprised if we do pick ourselves up and make it past City to the final.  That's the nature of Liverpool.  We can rise up for big games and pull a rabbit out of a hat - as much as we can pull shit performances out of our ass for the regular 'bread and butter' teams.

Been that way for 20 years.  That's the life of a Red.  YNWA, fellas.

  • Carljones19

Still do not understand why Liverpool supporters keep harping on about Benitez, completely over-rated, desecrated the youth system, spent a fortune on useless players, upped sticks with his millions and bye. The way Roy Hodgeson was treated by the Kop was shameful. You got what you wished for..... KK ... What a joke!!!!

  • justin

Thank God you must support Blackburn and then Fulham and now West Brom. Stick to that!

  • purify_the_body

I know, it's a mystery why any fan, in a moment of frustration and desperation, would fantasize about bringing back a Champions League winning manager. Why would they possibly want that back?

Meanwhile, the same fans treated a manager poorly who achieved a record of 0.50 pts per game away in the league, dragging the team down to 12th in the table and the worst league start for the club in over 50 years. Why wouldn't they like that??

I can see why you don't understand it...life is filled with many mysteries like this. But keep plugging away, one day you'll pull back the curtain, I'm sure. Lol!

  • Luis Suarez dentist

Compare Rafa's managerial record with Uncle Woys then have a think then make a comment!

  • Lis

OK, your whole comment is basically wrong, but the most glaringly stupid statement re: Rafa is that he "desecrated the youth system" (disturbing choice of verb, btw). We pretty much wouldn't have a youth system if it wasn't for him.

  • Wow, every single thing you said is certifiable dumbassery and a quick check of your commenting history suggests you're not a troll. So I guess what I'm trying to say is there's a fine line between annoyance and pity.

  • ShedYourYellow

I feel that crying is the only expression of emotion that I'm going to be able to procure. Anything else that was even feasible has already been stamped all over twitter/the matchday thread, so I don't even know what the point is.

We can talk tactics all we want. We can talk lineup all we want. We can talk about how much I don't like Charlie Adam especially after finally getting to see the game (if you would like to do that, come find me on twitter. I'm always up for that conversation) all we fucking want. Ngog? Yeah. That shit hurt. Of course he did well against us; it's us being the worst of us possible for godssakes, and our performance was not something I'm proud of at all. We can talk about any and all of the topics above for hours, we can call for Kenny's head, we can crucify Skrtel blahblahblah.

That doesn't change the fact that we fucking lost 3-1 to Bolton and that I am using language that is not really befitting the upbringing I had an awful lot in the aftermath of such a trainwreck of a match.

What the hell else can we do? We don't have much of a choice but to carry on, do we? They're a side facing relegation that bested us fair and square. What more can we say? Liverpool were horrendously awful today, 90% of those in a red shirt we're awful today, Bolton was the better side. It's shitty, and that's about all there is to it. There's no one to blame but Liverpool, but by the same token we have to keep it in perspective. It's not all rainbows and lollipops, but knee-jerk after knee-jerk doesn't help either.

Don't put your blind faith in the manager, but don't try to put him on a rotisserie either. Don't let these horrible performances slide, but don't forget that our back line's been something to be proud of all season.

    Also, I really love chicken.

  • ShedYourYellow

Reading back over this, I guess what I'm trying to say is, come on, people, have a little perspective.

  • crazyhorse

Lay off the booze mate! you have had enough, now get to bed!

  • fastrail

I admire you for being able to keep a cool head after a performance like this.

  • Suarez from the car park...

6 points from 6 games needs discussion.  What to do, where to go.  It's not a good time.

  • fastrail

It needs discussion badly, 6 points out of 18 is relegation form, no matter how you look at it.

  • jpr

And 3 of those teams are in the bottom 4 today. Tieing Wigan, Blackburn and Stoke at home. Getting outplayed by Bolton. Looking impotent and incapable of attack against Stoke at home. A one trick pony against Man City. Liverpool's trademark has Always been every guy giving 120%. Even if not the most talented team, we would outcompete and out hustle every other team. Where has it gone? We have lost that fighting spirit.

  • fastrail

The lack of desire made it painful for me to watch them play.

  • Geoff Twentyman

I thought that all of the youth teams utilise a 4231 system and that this is used from the moment they enter the academy to when they leave to promote consistency and  culture for the club.
I thought it had been established that Charlie Adam was better off employed in a 3 man midfield?

I thought it was universally accepted that Steven Gerrard benefits from playing in a more advanced midfield position?

I also thought we'd established through this seasons performance levels, that Henderson is not a right midfielder?

After the Stoke result, this was the game to get us back on track and hopefully score a few goals.

Kenny, that was an unacceptable team selection, formation and tactics today.

  • This was the realization of what a lot of us have known for months, that the big buys, Carroll, Henderson and Adam aren't good enough.

That said, you're right about team selection, even though he didn't have a fit DM, the fact he didn't play three in midfield was just poor tactics.

  • Baldrick

I agree Geoff, Kenny got it wrong today but he was also immensely let down by the players he selected who appear to have had the City game more on their minds than what was in front of them. Credit to Bolton they played with their hearts and Bellers was the one in a red shirt to match them. I appreciate that you're not advocating it but sacking the manager is not the right option at this moment in time. Yes, if Hodgson had spent all this cash and still been in charge we would be baying for his blood and the talking heads at Sky are having a field day on that as I type. But what they don't understand or appreciate is our belief in Kenny who knows the ethos of this club inside out and is the best fit to move the us forward at this time.

I think we should also look at the bigger picture and take this result in context; we are in transition, we also have a lot of relatively new players who are still finding their feet at the club and Lucas and Spearing, who are the wheel of our midfield and are both out injured. We are also still struggling from the loss of Torres and have yet to remedy that vital position. Personally, I don't think Carroll is a true fit for our style of play and was an expensive mistake. In hindsight we should have just swallowed the loss of Torres and waited to replace him in the summer but C'est la vie my friend, shit happens!

The way forward is to not panic right now. Okay we are not having the season we all dreamed of but let's not push the panic/reset button right now. The buys we bought in the summer were always with a look to what was over the horizon but it is clear that we are missing a goal scorer. Buying one now may get is into 4th but it's vital that they fit our style of play. It may however prove more prudent to wait until the close season.

  • Suarez from the car park...

    Wasn't great against Stoke.

  • Lis

Watching the match and reading some of the comments here have both been very "oh, the humanity" moments.

  • Gerard_moreland

Liverpool were so bad, the trouble is Dalglish doesnt seem to see how bad this team is, the supporters need to let him know how bad they are, they need to start singing "What a load if rubbish" because that what thee are, don't want the fans to start turning on the King, but if things don't change can't.see any other answer.

  • Ryan

.....This was a must win. And we lost? I really can't think of anything positive to say.

To be honest, I'm really not going shit up the pipe unless we loose this Carling Cup. That would help make up for not getting into the Champions League, for me personally. I'm simply talking about my footballing enjoyment, not what's best for the club. If we won a cup, I'd get over loosing our top players next year due to being in 7th place again. But loosing everything?

  • Travis Artz

I'd actually prefer it if we lose some of our top players.  lol

Gerrard and Lucas aside, I wouldn't feel the least bit disappointed if anyone else left.

Instead of buying British (KK) and buying based on stats (Comolli), I'd like to see them start buying more fighters.  Guys that fight like hell for 90 mins like Bellamy does now and Kuyt used to do.

  • Red2death

Well, you need some quality along with that.  Guts can only get you so far.

Blackpool were fighters.  QPR are fighters.  Wimbledon's 'crazy gang' had loads of spirit.  Take any of the perennial relegation strugglers and they're all fighters.  They'll hustle and they'll chase and do anything it takes to secure survival.  But really, does that give them a bright future and do you see them later climbing up the league?  Not really.  Sad fact is they'll still be beaten by overpayed pussies from Chelsea, Utd.  Or the more technically gifted at Arsenal, Spurs.  And let's not even talk about what happens when 'fighters' come up against the top European sides that are supposedly full of softies and dancers.

I'd rather stick with the likes of Suarez, Torres, Alonso, Maxi, Agger, etc.  Quality first.  Hustling second.  It's nice for us to think that the team that wants it the most gets the result.  But many times it's really not true.

  • purify_the_body

I'd be disappointed to lose any of Suarez, Reina, Enrique, Agger, Skrtel, Bellamy, Gerrard, or Lucas. They are the core talent of the team.

  • Very _Angry_Brand

This is how king Kenny Manage Liverpool...no comments! Hopeless !
