Anfield Banter: Heinze, Mancini, Torres, & Giorgio Chiellini?
By: Brian | July 16th, 2007* Sorry this is so late, but honestly, there was really nothing to write about until the last hour and I’m saving that for the last part of this post. From now on, I will no longer talk about Gabriel Heinze. Go to Real Madrid, Gabriel, we don’t want you. If any of this nonsense of him coming to us is true, I’ve got to know what the heck is Rafa smoking? Heinze has been nothing but unimpressive for the last year or so. He’s done, stick a fork in him and carrying him to Spain. If he comes to us… I don’t even want to think about it.
* We are not after Mancini. What Rafa says, goes. Enough of that nonsense.
* Fernando Torres and his new tattoo will debut tomorrow against Werder Bremen in Switzerland, if all goes according to plan. I’m hoping to watch this match and give a full report, but with preseason matches, I never know if I’m gonna get to see it or not. Also, El Nino suffered a slight ankle injury in training last week, but that’s not supposed to stop him from playing.
* Finally, a new name has popped up in our search for a left back to back up John Arne Semundseth Riise until Fabio Aurelio gets back and that name is Giorgio Chiellini. The 23-year-old Juventus player and captain of the Italy U21 squad is said to be available for £7m, while we have only offered £5m for him. From what I’ve read/researched about him, he is primarily a left-sided player and can play midfield as well. I think we need someone more versatile, like, oh I don’t know, Jorge Fucile maybe?
EDIT: Well I did a little more research and apparently Chiellini was used to play centre back as well last season, so maybe he will be a good pick-up. Not sure if he’d get more playing time here next season as he would at Juve though. Save injury, I don’t see him playing any matches other than domestic cup ties.

Isn’t it a bit odd that Italy’s U-21 captain is 23?

Well, technically he’s 22, but he’ll be 23 August 14th. The rule is though, if you are 21 when the qualification process for the UEFA U21 Championship begins, which is usually about 1.5 to 2 years prior, than you can play in the final. It makes sense on the level that you don’t want to have to switch out players every time one gets past 21, but then again, they could just say you can’t be older than 21 when the final comes around.

Looks as though Chiellini is joining us. When I say us, I don’t mean Liverpool though, Man City, lol. Have to say I don’t know the first thing about this guy but he has excellent pedigree breaking into Italy’s full squad at such a young age. Here’s hoping…
By the way your comments about Heinze. We all know about the rivalry between you two, I am of the opinion that he is committed and a class left back, however, not world class. The way he played in Milan was shocking, but a godsend for Man City and Liverpool fans!
