Steven Gerrard, what can you say?

By: Brian | June 2nd, 2007

So there’s these two Brazilian blokes who Nike says are the best in the world and all the zombies who eat telly like it’s fruit from the tree of knowledge slobberingly agree. And these two fine fellas walk around like they invented the game because, let’s face it, they believe their press clippings. Anyhoo, these couple of lads come to Wembley, pose for the cameras, show their teeth and what not, and then proceed to play like two headless chickens at a gun rally.

Let’s talk about Kaka for a sec. He’s a great passer. He’s great on the ball and he’s got a great shot. What else? Movement off the ball? Mediocre. Defensive ability? Slim to none. He truly lived up to his name yesterday.

What about Ronald? Rhymes with rubbish.

Steven Gerrard. Man of the match. If he was latino, he’d be the two-time defending Player of the World.

Oh, wait, he’d have to sign with Nike too.

Again, I know I’ve made this comment before here, but I (not a TV zombie, by the way) just can’t put Gerrard on top in the world. Kaka is streaky, I’ll give you that. At his best, I think he’s more of an impact player than Gerrard, but I can understand the point that he’s a bit inconsistent. Your argument about Ronaldinho is a bit less thought out. Rhymes with rubbish? I was almost with you until that one.

Stevie’s not had the best of seasons this year IMHO. When he’s at his best he really is a world-beater. Couldn’t f*cking believe that last-minute injury-time goal yesterday btw….arrrrrgh.

I hate the goalkeepers away kit..Its horrible. And the Calsberg logo on the players away kit is unacceptable. At least they could have changed the color to red. If you were relieved by the announcement that the sick yellow tops were going, you’ve got no better. Why don’t they consult a specialist in such matters. How am I going to bear such horrible dress through all the away games(Especially considering our awfukl away record of last season). And if that black dress that was leaked in the web before it is officially announced is for real, I’m not going to buy a away kit this season. It looks like training tops, not for the matches. Somebody go and stop them before they release it…..
And to all those dumb a** milanese
    I BELONG TO LIVERPOOL

Of late virtually all of the POTY winners have won their domestic league, the World Cup, or both. Obviously Liverpool’s European success has earned Gerrard a lot of credibility as one of the world’s best, but it’s hard to win player of the year when your team is always in the second tier domestically.

I agree with Ian a lot (is this a trend? I don’t know if I like it), but I don’t think Gerrard is flashy enough to be World Player of the Year. Now, that could be your entire point, but he doesn’t have the same creative flare that it takes for people to jump up and down and scream with ecstasy, which I think Ronnie did have a season ago (the CL Champ season).

I’m not a Liverpool expert and I don’t watch many EPL games, but Gerrard has always seemed a bit inconsistent, like what you say about Kaka. He tends to disappear at times, though when he’s on he’s effing on and it’s hard to stop him. But what are his qualities that really put him a step ahead of everyone else? Frank’s point about being second-best domestically is good and perhaps that’s the reason in the end. You don’t win at home or internationally, then what do you have? What accolades? It’s an interesting question and I think it can be applied to a lot of players.

Granted, in 2005 Gerrard came in 7th even though they won the CL title, but they wouldn’t have even qualified for the CL had it not been for a timely rule change. Sort of a nice rule change, of course, but still timely for Liverpool.

All in all, if I were starting a team, I would not choose Gerrard first in the world. If you would, well, I’d gladly take your squad on.

Agree with most of what you all have said. Gerrard is a great great player. We all have seen him disappear in the past, but at the end of the day he’s a badass with the ability to take over games with his sheer will power – like 2005 Cup match; but then this year’s cup match he just didn’t have it.

I think he’s good enough to be POTY but he’s not a self-promoter. He puts his team first and that just doesn’t help. But if you had to build a team from scratch, he would have to be in the first few players you consider, just because of age, experience, leadership, etc. I would definitely take SG over Kaka in midfield.
