International hangover: No Gerrard & no Carra = no win for England

By: Brian | August 23rd, 2007

I can only laugh. As much as most fellow England fans take any chance to slag off on the scousers, we certainly needed them yesterday as England was embarrassed at New Wembley, 1-2, by a makeshift Germany squad. I hope this spells the beginning of the end for Paul Robinson who was simply shocking in net. I have little doubts that either current Liverpool-loaned-to-Aston-Villa keeper Scott Carson or former Liverpool keep David James would have at least stopped that first goal. The second one Robinson was caught well out of position, but it would have been a Herculean task to prevent it. Great keepers do that though and what we’ve learned time and time again is that Robinson is rubbish.

Let’s see, Beckham? Check. Terry? Check. Lampard? Check, and might I add that his goal was impressive yet he seemed to relatively disappear after that. I guess Fatty Frank also heard that the food at the New Wembley is pretty good and seeing how overpaid he is, in his price range. It was quite evident that this team lacked the kind of world class ability that scousers Gerrard and Rooney would have provided. At times it seemed they couldn’t put a meat pie in Fat Frank’s mouth using their hands, yet alone put the ball in the back of the net.

In other Liverpool players International action, despite praise from the official site, Riise did not have a great game for Norway against Javier Mascherano and the Albicelestes. In fact, Riise won a very questionable penalty from his fellow teammate by basically diving in the box after Javi kicked the ball away from him and he had no chance of making a play. Mascherano, on the other hand, was quite impressive at times, including a lot of fancy footwork against the Norwegians.

The only Liverpool player to score on the day was Dirk Kuyt, who came on for Holland in the second half and scored the only goal for his country in their 1-2 loss at Switzerland. Ryan Babel also played in this match.

All 15 called-up except Scott Carson (how ironic is that?) LFC players played some minutes for his country with Pepe Reina, Sammi Hyypia, and Daniel Agger playing full matches. Why Daniel Agger played the full 90 is a mystery to me, his team lost at home 4-0 to Steve Finnan and the Irish. Seems to me a manager would take out his star players as not to risk injury, especially after his side went down 3-0 in the 54th minute. With Agger and Hyypia now fatigued, who are we going to start alongside Jamie Carragher at centre back on Saturday at Sunderland? Arbeloa?

Anyhow, overall not a good day for our internationals and a boring day at that. Hopefully the boys will take out their frustrations on the Black Cats. Cheers.

About the Riise v Mascherano incident, Masch himself said in an interview after the game that it was correct to give the penalty.

The guy who wrote the blog you linked to obviously didn’t see any reruns/highlights of the situation and just rattled something off. You can see for yourself that Riise did a good job getting past the first defender before Masch sticks his leg out in a way that will result in a given penalty pretty much 95% of the time. It’s not exactly a clean tackle on the ball, as the other blog suggests.

You’re out of your mind. Mascherano clearly gets a piece of the ball. There’s no way that should have been a penalty.

Agger’s a stud, he’ll play against Sunderland. He’d better or my fantasy squad is shot.

Well Masch himself said there “might have been some theatrics” but that it was a correct penalty.

Anyway I’d think a Liverpool blogger would be happier about Riise getting two assists in a game vs Argentina, friendly or not!

I think Masche was probably just doing the right thing and letting water run under the bridge. They’re teammates and there’s no reason for him to care really. It was only a friendly. Still though, it was a bad call. Javi was clearly ‘in front’ of Riise, his intent was to knock the ball away, which he did, and if he wanted to take out Riise, he could have, but of course, wouldn’t.

I don’t consider a penalty an assist and though the second was nice (a free kick to Carew, who headed it in), I’d much rather see him do that in a Liverpool kit instead of being rather useless like he was against Chelsea on Sunday.

Atleast Lamps and JT had the guts to play inspite of their injuries. “King” Carra chose to move away from three lions coz he was afraid of competition. And the “mighty” stevie put club ahead of country. Lamps came here with the same injury (as of Stevie) and scored too. He and JT had guts to play midweek game and accept the loss. And may I remind you abt (your) scouser Rooney tht he hasnt scored in any competitive game for England since Euro 2004. World Class.

SM should keep Stevie on Bench for not turning for his national duty. Afterall he only performs for his Kops.

Nice one, Adam, too bad Lamps and Terry aren’t good enough to lead England past a second string German squad at Wembley. McClaren maybe an idiot, but I doubt he’s stupid enough to sit his best player for Dough Boy Lampard.

My point was JT and Lamps atleast showed infront of 90k fans even though they lost. And both JT and Lamps did what was their job. Its not their mistake that Scouse boy Owen missed 2 sitters. Unfortunately SM is also dolt to play guys like Dyer/Smith instead of Defoe/SWP.
If Bentley is given ban for not turning up for the country then same treatment should be applied for all other guys too. Let them be the best player in this world.

Stevie the best player in England? Are you sure? You gave me good laugh. He hardly contributes what he does week in week out at anfield. I know you guys have lots of bitterness for Lamps. But its pure jealousy. Good luck for Stevie since Im sure Rafa wont be allowing him to play in any International Match for next month given his hairline fracture.

JT and Lamps played with no heart, but what do you expect when they play for the robot that is Chelsea. They care more about their bank accounts than they do about their country, hence all the crying over their wages the past couple of years. The only reason the even showed up was for television time.

Stevie-G is without a doubt the best player in England. Name someone better.

Explain ‘pure jealousy’ for Lamplard, now that’s a laugh. I actually like and respect Terry, but will never feel the same about that selfish bastard, Fatty Frank.

Bentley should have been able to play and Owen has been disowned by the Scousers ever since he wanted to leave for a ‘bigger stage.’ That worked out well for him.

    Brian,
JT and Lamps didnt play with hearts is lame. Even after injuries they chose to play indicates the same. Everyone in white jerseys played with heart on their sleeve except Becks (too much travel and media) and Dyer. Care to watch how Lamps and JT play in blue jerseys. As far as fat accounts goes we know even Stevie is not playing for peanuts in Anfield. He happens to be highest paid player in Liverpool.

Once again its pure jealousy from scousers for Lamps. Co z he won England’s best player award twice. Coz he plays in same midfield with muppet Stevie. Coz he gives staunch competition to SG for best midfielder in England. Although Lamps had a average season both for club and country last year (even SG had a some bad seasons in past ). This season he is looking more promising. And scored 3 goals in a row of 3 matches. I dont know why everyone hates Lamps so much.

AS far as best player in the country goes…at the moment it is Hargreaves or JT. And Richards being best young talent.

When Stevie is fit, Lamps sits. And no, they played with no heart.

Hargreaves? What are you smoking in India? Two good games in the world cup doesn’t make you England’s best player. He’s too inconsistent and incomplete of a player.

JT? No. Not complete enough player. Gerrard can play any position except keeper effectively. You can’t say that about JT.
