Anfield Banter: The Idiot’s Guide to Le Tallec, Dani Alves alert, & Robbie Threlfall

By: Brian | August 1st, 2007

* Well, we found out a couple of things about Anthony Le Tallec today. First, Rafa has set his valuation at £2.7m and second, the club he was out on loan to last season, Sochaux, are apparently pondering whether or not to pay that much for him. Doesn’t seem like too much for the guy who won you the French Cup. Also in the running are Birmingham City and Fulham, but one thing is for sure, he’s going to be sold and soon. He was not even invited to travel with the reserves on their current tour of Holland.

* Apparently Brazilian right back extraordinairre, Dani Alves, has declared his desire to leave Sevilla. I hope Rick Parry is remembering his declaration of not done spending about right now.

* And finally, yes, it’s been a three-toed sloth crawl of a day, Robbie Threlfall has his heart set on first team action, whether it is the League or the Carling Cup. From what I’ve seen of him, there’s a good chance we’ll see him in the latter. Cheers.

Why would Alves be a good signing. ya, he’s a great right sided player, but he is not a great defender in the sense that Finnan is, and as a right sided midfielder, i dont think that Pennant should be bumped after his display in the CL Final. The truth is that Alves’ ‘brazilian winger’ style doesnt fit into Rafa’s tactical style. Rafa would get Alves, even though he is greatly overvalued, if he really wanted him.

For a club like Sochaux, 4 million euros is a lot of money, and Le Tallec hasn’t justified that pricetag. He did score the equalizing goal in the French Cup, but most of his performances were okay in L1. Sochaux do need a striker, so if Hantz is up to the task of working with Le Tallec and making him a better player (since he obviously has the talent), then they might see it as an acceptable risk.

Scott, I think the bottom line is we need some cover for Finnan other than Arbeloa who already is our back line jack-of-all-trades. Darby isn’t ready yet. A right back doesn’t have to be a great defender, just an okay one. Alves has the speed to cover the whole right side and most importantly, get back and put himself between the left winger and the goal. As for Pennant, if you don’t know about my infatuation/obsession with him yet, just wait. It’s borderline unhealthy.

Inara, are you serious? That would seem like a good buy to me. The kid is only 22 and his talent is unquestionable. He is pretty versatile and can play up front, in the hole, on either flank, on attack, or even as a defensive midfielder. Discipline has never been a problem for him. He’s definitely going somewhere and whether or not Rafa sticks to that price, I’m sure something can be worked out.

hey brian a differnt scott here! i read your blogs regularly and we have had a few good discusions i would like to know your opinions on what would be realistic in the coming season, i above all would be happy with progress the last 3 seasons we have finished 33, 9, and 21 point behind the winners, i would be happy with winning the league obviously but if that is not to be the case, realistically if we can get to within 10 points of the eventual winners i would be happy with that as it does represent progress. what do you think?

scott, I’ve been thinking about the EPL and what I hope and expect for the upcoming season, players, mostly because of my three fantasy teams, and teams-wise for about three weeks now. I plan on posting a full EPL preview soon. Possibly even tomorrow, if not, probably not until next week since there’s a game Friday and Sunday.

Le Tallec does have talent (I want to cry at his waste), but he only scored in three league games for Sochaux (a total of four goals) last year. For Lyon and Marseille, four million euros is pocket change, but for Sochaux, that’s almost half of their transfer budget. They lost some of their key players and need to replace them as well, so it’s still a gamble for them.

Though I think in the end Sochaux will buy Le Tallec because they’re current strike force lacks a “spark.”

I guess my follow up question would then be, Would Alves be happy playing behind Finnan for at least the next two years until health has an effect on Finnan’s performances? By the way he has handled this transfer window, i.e. waiting until now to publicly make it obvious that he wants to move, do you think that he has the class needed to handle that situation?
