Wolverhampton 0, Liverpool 3: Winning Ugly

andy carroll goal celebration wolves
Wolverhampton 0
Liverpool 3 Carroll 52′, Bellamy 61′, Kuyt 78′

It was another chance for a struggling club to inject some life into their season by facing a Liverpool side unable to find consistent results against opposition below them in the table. Unlike Liverpool’s last opponents Bolton, however, Wolves never really threatened to take control of the match, though it nevertheless seemed to be going down a familiar path for Liverpool for the first fifty minutes as chances were wasted and midfield devolved into an indecisive muddle. Still, for a side to be successful it needs to find a way to win even when the games are dull and performances sub-par, and for one of the few times in a season full of disappointing results against lower league opponents Liverpool managed to walk away with all three points in spite of a performance nearly as underwhelming as Wolves’ was at times.

At times that quality of play—or lack thereof—made it seem as though a couple of friends had headed out with a six-pack to kick the ball about on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and a quiet, half empty Molineux didn’t do a lot to alter such negative perceptions. Mick McCarthy meanwhile will have moved one step closer to unemployment, with his players turning in a passive, uninspired performance against a Liverpool side known for playing down to the level of their opposition. But only three days removed from an emotional victory over Manchester United in the FA Cup, it might very much be one of those times when for Kenny Dalglish and the Liverpool players a win is a win, and good enough in itself for that fact.

It wasn’t all dull and dire, though, as Liverpool came out of the gates fired up, looking to carry over their cup form to the league. In fact, the first twenty-five minutes were almost entirely Liverpool’s, even if that meant it was back to the theme the club ended 2011 on: An inability to consistently convert possession into quality chances, and an inability to convert any quality chances that were created into goals. First Kuyt bundled the ball into Hennesey in the opening minutes, his heavy touch at the edge of the six-yard area spoiling Liverpool’s chance to take the lead when the game had just barely begun. After that, Liverpool would struggle and strain, seeing lots of the ball but to little effect until the twenty minute mark, when a perfectly weighted pass from Jordan Henderson sent Craig Bellamy flying between centre backs and clear on goal only for the striker’s toe-poke to slide wide of the post.

charlie adam bad tackle

Soon afterwards, Daniel Agger’s header was saved by Hennesey off a corner before an odd-man break broke down when Charlie Adam refused to slide the ball out to a wide open Dirk Kuyt. Then, with Liverpool growing frustrated and Wolves beginning to realise they might not be facing an especially clinical side, the game began to devolve. Sloppy midfield play dominated for both sides, with Spearing and Adam the primary culprits for Liverpool as the match carried painfully on through the end of the first half and into the second with neither side appearing at all interested in taking the three points. About the only impassioned moment in nearly thirty minutes of play would come when Craig Bellamy cut the ball back to Adam with five minutes left in the first only for Emmanuel Frimpong to bundle the Liverpool midfielder over in the penalty area. Referee Anthony Taylor, however, was unmoved, and despite that it seemed a clear penalty the reality was that Liverpool had only themselves to blame for failing to convert their early chances into a lead.

Fifty-two minutes in, they finally did convert a chance, and it was thanks to the unlikely pair of Adam and Andy Carroll. Coming off perhaps his best game in a Liverpool shirt on Saturday against Manchester United, Carroll had again put in a strong shift against Wolves, and when Adam swung a cross into the penalty area that hard work finally paid off with a drilled, left-footed finish from close range. As for Adam’s role in the goal, while it’s impossible to overlook the quality of the cross, it’s also impossible to overlook that until that point he had been having one of his worst games in a Liverpool shirt—and that against a side with even a slight pulse, his numerous giveaways and sloppy defensive effort may well have seen Liverpool a goal or two down as had been the case against Bolton the week before.

Additionally, it’s also impossible to overlook just how bad McCarthy’s Wolverhampton Wanderers were on the night, a theme that would continue nine minutes later when the defence backed off from Craig Bellamy. The on-form striker accepted the room he was given on the edge of the area and slotted the ball under Hennesey to put Liverpool two goals up and seemingly put the game out of reach. The result would be confirmed not too long afterwards when Jose Enrique collected a poorly taken Wolves corner, shrugged off the disappointing Frimpong, and and fired a massive crossfield ball to Dirk Kuyt as Liverpool countered. Kuyt then passed square to a late-arriving Adam, who seemed to have held onto the ball too long before popping it back out to Kuyt at the last second for the Dutch attacker to drill home his fiftieth league goal from a tight angle.

Perhaps it was a far from a convincing display from Liverpool, and Wolves’ poor play most certainly had a lot to do with the result. Still, after how many poor results this Liverpool side has had against opponents behind them in the standings so far this season a few goals, a clean sheet, and three points are reason enough to celebrate despite that almost every question that has been lingering around this group of players for the past few weeks remains.

    FUCK THE FA:
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/n... - of course John Terry won't be prosecuted until after the championships, of course. That alleviates any pressure on the FA to issue a ban this season. Unreal.

  • Latortillablanca

    preposterous

  • Redarmy

I thought we played well yesterday, especially being agressive and winning the ball back and really looking like we're going for the win. Adam looks far more comfortable and confident with a legit DM to cover for him. Nice game Chaz!

  • NotTooXabi

If/when there's a highlight package, I hope it shows this moment from the 2nd half:

Carroll, about 10 yards from the halfway line, brings the ball down with a deft (accidental?) first touch and turns his man with an ease that made Agger smile. He creates a bit of space and marauds (Legal Compliance) about 30 yards down the throat of the Wolves back-line to fire off a not-that-awful left foot howitzer. And though it will count as a failed attempt, the fact that AC had a "should have done better" smile on his face says it all. Confidence is growing.

They boy CAN play some decent football. He CAN score goals. He CAN show commitment to the proverbial cause and a fair amount of audacious ambition. (He CAN also be as useful as a smartphone in Redknapp's hand, but we've covered that story before.) Right now, I hope Andy gets the same opportunity Downing, Adam, and Henderson got to cement a place in the Starting XI.

  • ejbauer11

That turn was f'ing fantastic. As were a number of his flick-ons. The one he put on the corner of the six yard box from the far post for the not-but-should-have-been-onrushing-[insert adam or henderson here] was perfect. Perfect illustration of how much he suffers when there's no one there in support.

The smartphone comment is re: Redknapp's bung defense (i.e., the smartphone is useless (in his hands)): "I can't use a computer; I can't write; I can't even fill in a team sheet; I'm too stupid to cheat the tax-man..." but let me tell you how it will be, 'arry...be thankful I don't take it all.

I think andy, suarez and bellers would be an interesting frontline (suarez and kuyt slightly recessed because they can run onto flicks...

  • ejbauer11

And by "Suarez and Kuyt slightly recessed" I meant Suarez and Bellers (w/ Kuyt able to do that when Bellers can't.

  • Suarez from the car park...

Well said.  He just needs to keep working and he'll be contributing each game and his confidence and aggression will keep building which will result in him having more of a go.

Let's hope Bolton was a real watershed game.  It'll be worth that loss if so.

What a February we've got.  Spurs, Urinals, Wemberlee, Arsenal, FA Cup 5th round, Everton if I've got it right!!

    Season defining or what?

You're gonna have to explain the smartphone comment to me one day [hopefully at a game or at someone's major basement home cinema setup].  Mad as a Hatter.

  • Latortillablanca

it's funny to me that the description of an andy carroll goal assisted by charlie adam as "unlikely" is a totally understandable one.  had the preseason over/under for adam-supplied-carroll goals been 1, i'd have laughed it off as ridiculously underestimated.  Just shows how crazy this season has been, i guess.  that said, i'll still take the over on that connection from here to the end of the season.  that's two effective performances in a row from carroll and he was markedly better positionally and confidence-wise against wolves than he was against manure.  long may that continue.

now lets introduce stuey into the picture, and see if we cant get that long awaited downing-skips-down-the-left-and-hits-one-in-with-pace-right-onto-carroll's-forehead...

  • brother jon

missed the match, so i appreciate the write-up double.

missed transfer deadline day too. there was one, right?  i'm not sure if our inaction was Kenny's call (or KD/DC, or JH/TW) and i'm not sure if we were just being prudent, lacked difference-making options, or have supreme faith; but if we make CL with this squad then KK for manager of the year? especially if 'arry's case goes south. though, i would pay good money for a picture of him in the hoosegow with his award. reppin' the FA for real.

and i 'love' the Charlie pic - even more than his Messi-like (first!!) pass for Dirk's goal or his wicked ball into Andy - his arm's at full stretch before Jarvis hits the turf.  his accountability game is strong (maybe that's his role??). still, i hope he doesn't play against Spurs. that's not the kind of responsibility KD is gonna demand from here on out. cuz the pressure is now on.  time for everybody to step up. We need CL!

  • Good to see us beating teams we actually should be beating for a change. More of the same please!

Bale: Boss, can you call Mr. Dalglish and congratulate him on Adam's two plays?
Redknapp: Lennon just asked me the same request. I already did.

  • Latortillablanca

    ??

  • manuyaji

Adam looks out of place against pacey teams like Spurs, and more likely than not, will end up making stupid fouls which might get him sent off.. I believe that's what tony meant..

  • Latortillablanca

wow, still over my head...cant see how you can read that from that...

  • fastrail

I'm totally with you..was waiting for someone to come up with an explanation lol

  • manuyaji

Hehehe.. I think he meant Bale and Lennon would prefer Kenny start Adam against them so that they can run circles around him easily.. That's why the congratulations message..

  • tony

Haha, that's what I meant. I am just too scared. We beat the 2 Man-evils whom Spurs couldn't. So at home we should handle them, right? But Bale & Modric are playing really well and we will hand in our weakness to these two on a plate. They wl go at Adam repeatedly to suck a yellow card early....

  • Suarez from the car park...

Wavelengths, parallel universes, they all feature on the good ole LIVERPOOL OFFSIDE!

    Carroll's on form? :O

I didn't get to watch the game; sadly, I had to go to work.  But, when I got off on my break I got a chance to look at the scores and smiled for the majority of the night after seeing that.  I don't care how we win, but if Carroll stays on form along with Craigy and Dirks gets that winger addition that Stuey can't contribute we may have a top four team to finish off the season.  I don't care how we do it (luckily I didn't have to watch the mostly boring game) but right now that makes me happy.

Isn't it written somewhere that it shows a teams quality that even at their lowest points they can still win.  We can def keep building from this.

  • Latortillablanca

yup yup.  id say that carroll was actually poor against man utd and that the wolves game is by far his best of the year, but sometimes a wicked assist (as he had in the cup) is all it takes to get a striker going.  against wolves we put the ball in consistenly and on the 6th or 7th cross into the box, carroll converts it.  it begs the question, what the fuck took so long for that gameplan?  suarez is in the game, pass and move. if carroll's leading the line, pepper the box with crosses.  pretty simple.  and the partnership between 9 and 7 just waits until next season and we dont use the two of them together for the rest of the season...

  • manuyaji

Yeah, I hope Kenny doesn't make them both play together as they are as different as chalk and cheese..
But Kuyt must definitely play, regardless of whether Carroll starts or Suarez..

  • Suarez from the car park...

Yeah, we made a bit of a meal of it in the first half.  Adam was terrible for most of that early period.

But we were trying to pass it around and make some moves, and it paid off handsomely.

Wolves weakened themselves to attack us so it made it easier near the end but they were pretty dire.

Spurs next - der der deeeerrrrrrrr!

I said the run in was the real time for this team to come together, and it's starting to look that way.

  • Ryan

Look forward to see more of stubby legs Adam, sprawling across the grass for the gamecocks. But "foreal" though. Hotspurs scare the shit outta me. They are THE team that has actually kicked our asses the past two seasons. None of the "they got away with a draw", or some weird offday from a poop team. They are good, and we. Well. Bend it. For them.

  • Suarez from the car park...

It's going to be tough.  I'm expecting a Man City type approach, 451 to contain the midfield.
Notice Bale is popping up all over the place.  He's going to be a great test for our defence as if he gets a shot away it's often lethal.

Feeling so much better about the team though.  Kicking the mancs' asses and adjusting to lowly Wolves is a good sign.

  • justin

Someone must be doing something right behind the scenes because the way Carroll has been playing in the last few games he's seemed so much more in-sync with the team's fluidity with his lay-offs and flick ons.

Just glad to be able to say that.

  • Latortillablanca

that assist at the end of the man utd game could be the turning point for not only his season, but for his liverpool career...

  • justin

Some how, I feel it's got to be something to do more with how the team is actually learning how to play around Carroll rather than purely Carroll's performances.

Then again, he certainly showed a certain air of confidence last night when he took a ball down, flick it over a defender and went on a run through the middle just to blast from a distance. A little gung-ho won't hurt eh?

  • Latortillablanca

def, the team's tactics havent helped him bed in at all this year.  both things need to happen for sure.

  • Lucious

I must say I agree. It seems most comments about Carroll on here today indicate most thought he was only adequate today. I thought he was excellent and it was the team that let him down. I'm going to guess he won around 75% of his airial duels. His flick ons were where players should have been, yet on so many occasions there was no one following up. Yes his first touch makes Kuyt looks like Messi and the way he goes about his business is oafish at best (quite un-Liverpool), but I thought his production was great. Could have had maybe 3 assists if people were on his wavelength. I was impressed with him today.

It's not spelt airial is it?

  • justin

There were at least two instances where he'd a knock back or the ball just fell off a Carroll duel right in the middle of the box with no one rushing in to finish it off.

It might be that the Wolve's defence was really poor today but from the very start with Kuyt's first chance it'd come off a ball into Carroll which dropped off to Kuyt who should've finished it.

Definitely think that Carroll deserves more credit that some might give him at the moment. That credit for me, is also deserved by those working on the training because it's quite apparent to me that the boys playing around Carroll are making more purposeful runs/passes that involve him now and not just send aimless balls onto his head at the word go.

  • Momo

He's beginning to shine as a target-man btw lines and not that danger-man/clinical finisher we were craving for.Someone like Crouchy I was going to say, quite handful but not a savior.

  • fastrail

    It's aerial :P

  • brother jon

and i'm glad you're able to say it. keep it up eh?

  • Geoff Twentyman

Let's not count our chickens just yet, but remember the kid is still only 23, came to us injured and is currently adapting to play our way. Time will tell, but by all accounts he still looks out of water to a certain extent.

  • justin

well, if my eyes served me right then i'd like to think that the team is figuring out the little ways of how to play around Carroll for a bit, but hey, we're not "that entire unit" yet.

But, I certainly thought that Carroll's flick ons or lay-offs had a better touch and a better sense of purpose than most of his performances in the past year. It's not much but 3 rather decent games on a trot is improvement.

We could've certainly done some of our guys from the middle busting their gut to get into the box late when some of those balls that came off Carroll duels were left hanging in the box with no one to finish up.

We didn't sign no strikers, but hey, all of them scored today. I'm happy with that.

  • CheekyFellow

the comings and goings of other than 1st team goalkeepers has always seemed strange to me.

  • leron

Must have been watching a different game. I saw very good passing between the players, and a very good performance despite the fact that the goal took time to come. Yes, Adam is always a bit careless, and Spearing looked as if he had just come back from injury (although he still kept the opposition out of key areas), but the team showed commitment and they always looked like they wanted to score. Also have to say that for me Henderson had an excellent performance and is improving to one of our top players.

  • manuyaji

It's time for us to acknowledge that Adam can never be even a half decent defensive mid.. He's slow, and his tackles are awful.. But today, I had no reason to blame him for his "clumsy" tackles - particularly the one which got him a yellow.. It broke down a dangerous attack - in fact I was hoping he would do that tackle.. Remember, it was kinda the same situation where Adam was just behind Eagles in the Bolton game, where Eagles ran on and provided the assist for the second goal - if Adam had fouled him at the beginning itself and collected a yellow, probably that goal wouldn't have materialised..
Adam can never be a Lucas/Mascha or even Spearing - that we must accept.. But given the limited talent he has at providing defensive cover, he put in a good shift with those "clumsy/stupid" tackles which essentially broke the Wolves attacks..

  • Latortillablanca

i think the write up was accurate, but if it had a negative tone it comes from the fact that we've seen liverpool dominate games in exactly this same way and then just not come up with the goods in front of goal.  i for one was totally expecting a 1-0 scoreline at best, so was pleasantly surprised.  its like waking up from a long, slow, hazy dream...

  • Suarez from the car park...

I loved the way hendo put in the first tackle I've seen him make and it left the other guy on the turf for 5mins!!

  • Red2death

Ugly indeed.  Towards the end, we had a 5-on-3 and mustered up one tame shot.  That about sums up our performance at times.

But if it means 3 points, I'll take as ugly as ugly gets.  Which is the love-child of Carlos Tevez and Gary Neville for those who needed an image.

  • Danny

    garlos teville.

  • Had an unreliable stream for the very beginning, got a decent one after we were 2-0 up but it dropped and managed to make me miss the third goal. Oh well, still happy for the result and the bucking of trends that have been persistent as herpes all through the season. Onwards and upwards, lads.

  • epic_skyline

I maintain that the previous 135 minutes of Premier League play (Bolton + first half of this game) was all an elaborate ploy to lull our competitors into a false sense of security. Well done, boys! ;)

  • epic_skyline

This may, in fact, also explain Stewart Downing's entire Liverpool career thus far.

  • Geoff Twentyman

    "defence backed up on Craig"

do you mean the "defence backed off from Craig"?

  • Geoff Twentyman

It sounds like a familiar story and the limitations of the squad continue to be displayed. Could the individual performances be summarised as such:

The back four looked realtively untroubled?

Spearing had too much adrenaline in the first half trying to imoress but got it together in the second to shield the defence well?

Adam redeems a typical Adam performance (frustrating and not of the standard expected by LFC fans) by creating a couple of goals?

Henderson was tireless and kept things ticking over, but didn't really take the game by the scruff of the neck or star as the crux of all things creative in the final third?

Bellamy scared defenders with his quick direct running and willingness to shoot?

Kuyt played tidy football and got into good positions one of which bagged him his 50th goal?

Carroll was often isolated up front on his own, but worked hard rather than looked spectacular?

  • Red2death

That's sounds about accurate.  Except for Hendo.  I think it gives him a bit too much credit.

I'm kinda tired of seeing Hendo and Carroll trotting around like 50/50 balls aren't worth busting a gut for.  Henderson gets bumped off the ball again, throws his hands in the air and moseys over back to his position.  I mean, seriously, you're wearing a Liverpool shirt for goodness sakes!  Fight!  If the ball isn't played to your feet, chase it down!

  • Chuckyred

I think Henderson does fight for the ball an I think Carrolls work rate has improved too. Henderson doesn't give away any needless fouls and only seems to dive in when confident of getting the ball, he basically stays goalside and chases te player away onto another option, patient, tidy and sensible defending really.

  • Geoff Twentyman

I dunno, not everyone is a born scrapper. I wonder what his interception stats are like? Tackling really is a last resort in the modern game. Getting back in position can achieve far more than getting involved in tussles with physically stronger players, just to show a bit of fight....

  • Suarez from the car park...

the one thing I don't like about Hendo is the way he stops the ball [going forwards] if it comes to him, then he looks around to see who he can pass it to, only to pass it back or sidewards.

Lucas used to do it but is better now.

the art is, as Stevie G and Xabi know, is to keep the ball moving, so you know the direction that has space and you touch the ball in that direction when it's passed to you so that you're off and running with the one touch.

Just wish someone would tell him that on the training pitch.

His style is much tidier than most English players which is why he gets pushed off and moans about it.  Will take a season or two to get all that out of his game.

  • justin

And I'd thought so far that Hendo's been the best one touch passer we'd on the team so far. I'm not sure if my eyes have been deceiving me but his technique is impeccable most of the time. There's room for improvement for his decision making though.

  • Ed

You've actually been watching the same Jordan Henderson, right? The one that has been playing one-touch football almost exclusively over the past few matches?

Or a different one who's not enough blood and thunder and not overly British and likes possession and patience and WHY DOESN'T HE JUST FLING IT 60 YARDS ALREADY?

  • Wait a second, I'm pretty sure those are the same Jordan Hendersons and you're just trying to trick me.

  • PDubz18

Personally, I think Hendo has slotted in well with our style of play, and has not been half as anonymous as some people describe him.

  • Ed

He's been that anonymous, and maybe worse, when shunted out right, but playing through the middle he's been consistently impressive. I'm not sure what everyone else sees when they're watching, but he's been one of my favorites on the season since Lucas went down. A few of the passes he's played this season--today's to gift a chance to Bellamy included--have been sublime.

Plus he's got a feel for the game that just seems right, but you know, booooring.

  • Latortillablanca

the sheer fact that the expectations for henderson have gone from "nurture your potential" to "why did u miss that 30 yard through ball on the volley?" speaks volumes to the season he's had.  playing with gerrard i feel like is opening his eyes even more as a CAM... and he's not the best on the right, but he puts a shift in and tends to get in a couple crosses a game when in those positions...

  • manuyaji

Ed, I believe Hendo's style is right - pass the ball on the ground so that the receiver can easily receive and position himself to make the next pass in the best possible manner, and also his crosses have not been overly disappointing.. But he needs to be a bit more adventurous, particularly when he receives the ball in the attacking third.. If you have observed, he always ends up delaying deciding whether to pass it forward where a player is making an attacking run and by that time the player gets covered, thus forcing him to pass it backwards, which basically means we would have to build the attack all over again..
I may be expecting a lot from Hendo too soon, but I would atleast rest assured if he tried being adventurous than be afraid of making a "wrong pass" in the final third.. I believe that may be the reason I like Shelvey more than Hendo, as Shelvey always tries to make the adventurous pass - sure it might fail most of the times, but atleast players learn from their mistakes, their judgement would be better, the direction/weighting of the pass would be better the next time..
Jonnysingapore got it spot on when he said that he should touch the ball in the direction where there's no one and get running, and also the fact that Lucas used to do it, but is better, much better now, and that's why you could see him dominate the midfield battles single handedly in recent days - his tackles/intercepts are already great, and his passing has also improved tremendously, and the point jonnysingapore made is a major factor in that..

  • Suarez from the car park...

Thanks for that, glad there's someone who is looking at what I am.

I don't want him doing 40 yard hollywood passes and he's as capable at doing the triangles as anyone else but I do want him to drive forwards with the ball when there's space to do it.
There's a part of him that plays on his heels where a little more movement [with the ball] would have a major effect on the game.
As he moves forwards so everyone responds and the opposition have to turn back on their heels to anticipate the advance, usually a couple of strides behind in their thinking.
Lucas is very good at doing this now and it used to drive me nuts when he would trap the ball and essentially stop the play.  It's a big reason why he looks so fluid and comfortable - AND he's looking for the pass so much earlier which has it's own knock on effect.  F'kin Disqus, this column's about 20 characters wide!

  • Geoff Twentyman

And that summary is not meant to be a criticism (except perhaps for Adam), but a recognition that we've developed a culture under Kenny and Steve. IE Hard work and keeping things simple. Pass and move.

All of these things were the basis of Shankly's vision for he club, and in a time where we'd have to pay 30m for a top talent to bring in some expressive creative flair and excitement, this is a solid approach.

The building blocks have been laid and whilst we won't overpay for anyone this transfer window (or so it seems) we'll be able to add to the squad in the summer when we've had a full year to assess things.

Onwards an upwards to 4th please boys!

  • The latter probably would have been the clearer way to put it, yes.

  • Geoff Twentyman

I felt like a dick as soon as soon as I posted that; but I can't help correcting football terminology - here in Australia, I'm still battling it out with people calling it 'soccer'. Gosh, the thought!

  • I'm more bothered by the the room for misinterpretation in my phrasing, even if after squinting at it for a bit I'm fairly sure that technically it works.

  • Suarez from the car park...

Technically, condoms work 98% of the time.

  • McrRed

Yeah, but it's like....hang on, I just have to go change another nappy...

  • Antonio

At least there are something to celebrate, away win, against lower opponent, 3 points gain, clean sheet and Chelsea only manage a draw.
Did not quite catch the whole game as the link was poor whole game, only manage to see the last goal.Kuyt still tireless, Henderson seem to run more and close down often during past few games which is a good sign.
Hope tomorrow Newcastle and Arsenal can only manage a draw or even loose, so that we can sit at the same position. We often stumble when our close rivals did not do well, I will hope this time will be different.
    Up Up all the way!!

  • Reba

Good performance, bad performance, top team, bottom team.  Who the frak cares?  3 points in the bag.  Hells yeah!  No complaining here.  YNWA
