Video: Martin Skrtel v. Stoke

By: Noel | January 17th, 2012

Saturday’s match against Stoke didn’t provide much in the way of top quality individual performances to look back on over the longest break between games in December or January, but amongst the many disappointing showings was yet another quality outing for Martin Skrtel. Six months ago fans impatiently waited for Phil Jones or Scott Dann to arrive on the transfer market and bump the Slovak down the depth chart, and now all the rugged defender does is turn in one man of the match calibre performance after another. It’s not a complete shock, given the form he showed early on with the club, but after a few decidedly down seasons it’s at least a welcome surprise.

Today’s offering isn’t quite the top quality every touch compilation we’ve come to expect in recent years, and the dodgy Chinese streaming site providing it might have transfer speeds better suited to audio of 8-bit video game theme songs, but at least it is video of one of Liverpool’s two bright spots against Stoke—with the other being Glen Johnson alongside Skrtel. Plus with the madhouse atmosphere taking over the comments of late, we could all do with a bit of lightweight video distraction.

    In the spirit of distracting ourselves from annoying shouty types and poultry fetishists, here's this;

Some of the suggestions for the new Warrior Sports kit are seriously ugly. That the 3 I've included are the most attractive I could find, kinda says it all. Sneaking like for the first one. Nice plain, old school look to it. Some of the monstrosities out there are terrifying.

Any of our American chums got any insight into this brand? I know they're a sub-division of New Balance and do a lot of hockey kits....and they're giving us 25 mil, so that's nice....

  • Luis Suarez dentist

Surely are new shirts will have chicken feathers on them??????????   :)

  • fastrail

I think the 2nd one looks good. Looks like a mix of an old kit plus the kit that we are wearing now. I'm not sure if everybody agree cause I am really suck at fashion, really.

  • ejbauer11

Played only footie growing up - and a die hard baseball fan - so I'm only familiar w/ companies that provided kits for those sports.

I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around Under Armor being a real brand, so we better have gotten a premium for letting a non-soccer brand outfit the team (I still refuse to wear Nike cleats, speaking of non-soccer brands).

I do have to say that I will never forget the day my club team got those germany '94 kits (below) in blue and white and thought we were the coolest kids on earth, all of which is to say I wonder if the pros give a f-ck. They have to, right? (Given they're the ones taking those glamour shots (that look like they were taken at some midwestern american mall, by the way) for the website).

How much did we want from Adidas? I hear they turned us down b/c we were overestimating our brand value. F-ck adidas.

  • redtrev73

Yeah, it's the ultra-plain one with the white round collar I like (bastards jumbled up since I posted!!) I read those comments and obviously they've got to spin it so it looks like they did the dumping. As Noel says below, it makes sense for us to take the funny-money Warrior are gambling and it would have been madness for an established giant like adidas to spend the same on anyone unless it was to steal Barca from Nike.

Just hope the magnitude of their gamble leads them to make some good styling decisions. I get very fussy about my kit and as a brand-whore, I love the current adidas gear.

  • As we mentioned about back when the Warrior deal got signed (I think—it's a while back and I'm too lazy to dig it up), FSG negotiated the deal with Warrior and Adidas had the right based on the current sponsorship contract to match it but declined. In the end, the Liverpool brand is more valuable to a maker trying to break into the game than it is to an established brand. It's worth the gamble for both Liverpool and Warrior to sign the most lucrative kit manufacturer deal in football, but it's hard to blame Adidas for thinking it's not worth their while to match it.

  • ejbauer11

Makes sense; thanks - think I missed that post. And I was so looking forward to nursing an irrational hatred for Adidas.

If they bring back the old crest (as you said below), that would be the jam. I'm partial to the one on the far right, rather than far left, but both are pretty f'ing sleek.

  • Well, they've made themselves look a bit like dicks with the PR spin they're trying to put on it so they aren't "losing" Liverpool, but it's hard to fault the logic at the root of the whole thing for any of Liverpool, Warrior, or Adidas.

  • ejbauer11

I knew that picture wouldn't go through:
    http://www.google.com/imgres?u...

  • Everything I've seen suggests that the home kit is supposed to be a very simple throwback to the 80s, complete with a new (old) club crest.

Skrtel is the beast. He puts his homing signal on the ball and Nothing is going to stop him from getting to it. Love watching him. He's also (sadly) one of our biggest offensive weapons recently with Luis out. That header on the corner against Stoke he will score more often than not. He's always dangerous on corners. That pass through the defenders legs on the video around 50 sec into Charlie at the six yard box Should have been a goal. Come on Charlie. A little anticipation. The one time you get into the box you take a nap. Drop those sandbags out of your ass. Skrtel will also go on a few mazy runs each game which are always entertaining.

So, we're not getting Pato, Sow or Podolski? So sad. I guess Luis will be back soon enough. If we don't hammer Bolton on Saturday, Ed's full time job is going to be fighting off the trolls and editing all of the angry fan comments. Trev will help out, I'm sure.

  • fastrail

Yeah..I'll try and get my head sorted out by then and comment a little more sensibly to help out Ed, I hope.

  • KC

I love our back four. Skagger kicks everyone's asses.

On an aside note, lfc transfer twitter is going crazy. Read that we've signed Joao Texiera which is exciting and hopefully true since he seems like a promising player. Our future looks bright. Other thing that I read was Napoli agreed to a LFC bid on Cavani...More incredulous about that one to be honest.

  • justin

The Cavani link was simply put up to grab peoples' attention towards the E-Petition, in otherwards, a fake, but a necessary step since the petition really needed the attention.

On the transfer side, it's all good that we're stocking up potentially good players but I'm honestly hoping that we might see some activity on the first team side.

  • KC

Ahh! You have to be from the UK to sign it right?

I'm in total agreement about the first team activity. I mean I'd totally like to fast forward a few years and see the majority of our academy in the first team and doing really well but I can't. So I really hope we do sign someone who can fix our goal scoring problems or at least we can find a way to fix them with the players we have now.

  • fastrail

Joao is the lad from Sporting yeah? do you know which position he plays? and yeah agree about the Cavani thing, although I really hope that it will be true. And link for the twitter please :P..I'm bored without football

  • KC

Yea I'm bored too which is why I ventured into the twitter waters. I just typed LFC transfers. There is that account called lfctransfers I think which seems pretty legit but I wouldn't know to be honest...

Tried to find out more about the player we just signed but youtube and google were pretty sparse on info about him so wouldn't know about where he playes and stuff. Saw bits of the highlights in the Sporting vs Liverpool NextGen game. He looks exciting but he's young so still hoping for a more first team transfer.

  • fastrail

Thanks for the twitter thing dude..hope that it will kill some of my boredom off..and is it true we just signed him cause can't see the news anywhere...and yeah quite frustrating really without any news whatsoever about transfers for the first team...need a finisher BADLY

  • Sam

the back four is solid, its now the time for us to get a proven striker and a wide man with pace. PLEASE  kenny sign LUKAS PODOLSKI!!. he can play in both positions, natural pace, and awesome finishing, strikes the ball similar to rvp!!...just imagine suarez and podolski upfront, also i dont think podolski would cost more that £20m http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

  • PDubz18

If we sign Podolski then we will have to change our jerseys to the German national team jerseys for him to be worth a damn.

  • Rosco

Sorry to drift off topic lads.

But does anyone remember there being a John Terry racism scandal once apon a time?
Suarez's ban will be over by the time the FA sweep Terrys under the rug.
Seems they're picking on the foreigner, bit racist no??

  • redtrev73

Hey Rosco. Terry will benefit from a kind of FA Scooby-Do ending and will be exonerated as he speaks the Queen's English and has to captain Fabio's lot this summer. Once they win, everything will be sunshine and multi-cultural lollipops...that's the plan anyway....

  • I'm sure they'll get to doing something soon. Like maybe after the European Championships.

  • Bull_of_the_Bosphorus

Player of the year (along with Enrique), great spirit this year. As an aside, Sow looks like going to Fenerbahce in Turkey for a ton of cash

  • Only if he personally changes his mind—they offered before but he turned down the move and stated he wants to go to England.

  • Bull_of_the_Bosphorus

I'll live in hope - thanks

  • Irish Red in Oz

hello ed n noel long time reader first time blogger and just taught i would weigh in with a bit of support for ya'l.Unfortunately you have the best Liverpool F.C blog on the net and as Ryan Giggs would tell you with success also comes unwanted attention, hence your new found trolls ruining your usually funny and articulated comments section.take it as a compliment.I do have one problem though, whats d story with not having more articles over the weekends i think a bit of overtime is required:)

Anyway thanks for keeping me up to date and entertained while i live in Oz,where their coverage of anything non cricket/rugby related gets little or no air time.

P.S I would not let Andy Carroll cut my grass let alone pay him to run around on some, although i do hope he proves me wrong.

  • Ed

Thanks for the comment, appreciate the kind words. And yeah, if this thing ever pays for more than a few packages of microwave noodles, you'll have plenty of posts.

  • Ta. And when the blogging billions start rolling in one of these days we'll have to double the flow of content both on weekend and off.

  • redtrev73

Nice to have another Paddy around IRiO...it's been all kinds of nuts round these parts. I would like to second the motion that Ed and Noel abandon all family life and contact with friends at weekends in order to supply more content for us LFCOffside junkies...it only seems fair...!!

  • Irish Red in Oz

thanks redtrev i must say i always enjoy reading u posts along with l.s.d and Ryan of course its hard to find level headed opinions on football blogs nowadays,(aahem the mirror or the s*n)

keep up the good work mo chara n hopefully we can beat manure next week,Fowler knows there is no better feeling than waking up on the Sunday hungover after a mighty session in the pub with a pint of mancs tears to quence the cotton mouth.

  • Kopite

    He's the beast....lol!!

  • Ryan

You post a video, a big, black, dark screen of a video, covered in Chinese symbols. And you expect me to click it.

  • Pretty much, yes.

  • Ryan

What the hell, I'll live a little.

"Sure I'd love a free virus scan!"...

Actually I just never got the video to work, but I'll assume he was awesome the whole game.

  • deadlydirk_killerkuyt

a few weeks ago i dreaded coming onto this site. i felt like there's a huge dark cyber cloud hanging above waiting to greet me. with some back 2 back draws and the city loss, i guess it was a blessing in disguise that i was away from home and can only browse the web on a phone.

now that i'm back, i have to say that its indeed madhouse atmosphere. all the focus on the negatives (and there are a bunch of them) makes the dark cyber cloud looms larger and closer.

this post to highlight a few postives can do no harm at all.

  • PDubz18

I can write a few positives about Alan Pardew's squad building skills if you want.

  • justin

Skrtel's been doing a Lucas; the way he's seems up as a contender for player of the year recognises that.

    Long may it continue.

  • kenny

It makes me sick to think about us not having Skrtel and Agger. What if we did get Jones or Dann? Where would we be with them? Would Newcastle have scored from Ba on that night? What if Agger did stay injured? I feel very fortunate to have our back 4. I think our priority is them. I feel bad, such a strong back 4 but lacking in finishing up top, it's almost as if their work is for nothing. Not to say that, but hopefully whoever reads this catches my drift.
