Video: Liverpool v. Wolves Extended Highlights

By: Noel | September 25th, 2011

Jose Enrique had another display that argued his case as Liverpool’s player of the season to date, but you won’t see much of that here. Lucas played over 270 minutes in less than a week and still had the stamina to run from one end of the pitch to the other to make a match-saving tackle in injury time, but you won’t see that here. You also won’t see Charlie Adam standing around in midfield, checking email on his Zune Bold 5000 and leaving a tired Lucas to almost single-handedly cover the defensive side of the game. And you won’t see much of Jordan Henderson, either. Though those last two were always a stretch to get much time in a highlights package, at least outside of the part where Charlie Adam’s frustrating tendency to fire wide from distance finally ended in a lucky break.

You will, however, see Suarez being Suarez, Carroll having his best showing since Manchester City with not a hoof in sight, and all the other good sorts of highlighty things you tend to see in MOTD highlight packages. Which, if you’re still in a mood for silver linings a week out from Tottenham, leaves plenty of topics free for further discussion as the week goes on. But enough dithering, on to the video…

    It's the third video down.

First time not to see a game in forever. Made do with live radio commentary on my iphone supplemented by the higher-end twitterati who were good enough to post as they watched. Will be watching the full 90 tonight on delayed broadcast on setanta. Some initial observations before wallowing in an analytical viewing later.

    * Sounded like Hendo was anonymous and motd hilites bear that out. I get the idea of the boss playing him at home in front of our fans to bring him on but alas, the reaction ended up being  similar to what a certain Lucas Leiva once endured by the second half so can Kenny really stick with the kid ahead of Dirky in the derby?

    * Well done to Andy on a much-improved display.

    * Can Adam survive the return of the captain or is it the afore-mentioned Hendo that's at risk? Or does Kenny see Stevie and Suarez edging Carroll out?

    * All of these are so much more appealing issues to mull over than the unrelenting misery and horror of  last September.

    * Interesting times Redmen and I'll have me some of those any day

  • Suarez from the car park...

that and so many more answers you must provide on your return.

  • Nic

Feel i need to defend Charlie here :)

    1. Plays it simple to Enrique, rather than lashing it long, for Enrique to play the long ball for Suarez - good choice by him!?

    2. Tracks back and gets himself into the area for the Wolves goal, even if he didn't get close enough to the man with the ball.

Not sure that's good enough tho!? :|

Also just wanted to ask, i know we keep talking about where Gerrard fits and seems everyone is mentioning Hendo or Adam to move out and Gerrard to fill either the RM or CM role but aren't we forgetting that he can play just off the striker...Suarez and Gerrard up front anyone!? :)

    Makes my mouth water.

  • Tom Foolery

Missed the match. Can't wait to see the indie highlights of that ponytailed monster. Defenders are really trying to make the most of any contact with him, too.

    How'd Kelly look?

  • Sandro

Kelly didn't play as well as he usual, still a solid performance though. My tip is that everybody will recognise him as one of the best defender's in the league by season's end... if he stops impersonating Aurellio on the sidelines.

    Not too xabi?

Jonny, you must have some wicked CPU security. That site tried to eat my laptop inside out.

  • JPR

Ditto!! Norton saved my ass. Like Stevie G. and Luis Fuckin Suarez is gonna save ours.

  • Suarez from the car park...

hey guys, sorry if I posted a duffer up there.  I downloaded the 2 files fine and have played them without any bother.
There's a bunch of pop ups and stuff, but I just ignored them.  I run ESET anti virus and my net provider also has protection enabled but it didn't seem to flag anything and the files scanned ok too.

What happened when you tried it?

  • JPR

Nah, no worries. Tried it again and seems to be OK now. First time Norton Security Suite popped up and warned of an attack and then some bogus security software was running on the screen that indicated my system had 3 trojan horses on it and I should buy their fix. I need to pick up an iMac or two anyway, I really like the apple systems. Mr. Ryan there, being in the creative Music business, is prob only using Macs and iMacs.

  • RedDownUnda

Go Mac. Look good. Work smart. Leer at viruses. And learn to respect the Catherine Wheel of Doom. Make OptionCommandEsc your friend grasshopper.

  • JPR

Close your eyes, what do you hear?

I hear the water, I hear the birds.

Do you hear your own heartbeat?

    No.

Do you hear the grasshopper, which is at your feet?

Old man, how is it that you hear these things?

Young man, how is it that you do not?

  • RedDownUnda

Do you hear the new 27-inch iMac hum softly, young one?

Feel the Intel Core i7 clock 3.8GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0?

Sense the twin 2TB Hard Drives gently brush lips?

See 16GB of memory chew on the Microsoft bloatware?

    No old man.

You really are a deadshit Grasshopper.

  • JPR

Funny. They are sweeeeeet machines. Getting my daughter one soon. 9th grade, ya know.

  • Ryan

Never fear with a Macintosh near!

  • Suarez from the car park...

Nice one Noel.  Very clever way of summing up the game and the team.

  • CheekyFellow

We're on this seesaw it feels, tipping between good, decent, and bad in a matter of a few weeks. It's an interesting time to say the least.

  • Suarez from the car park...

I know what you mean.  It looks good going forwards, but then we don't deal with teams taking the game to us, Lucas is doing the work of 2 and Hendo doesn't appear to protect Kelly or do other stuff and the defence has to work overtime too making it look feeble.

We don't help ourselves not taking our chances - against all but Spurs we could have had 3 before half time and put the game to bed.

When we don't, it makes Kenny's job a lot harder trying to get the new intake sorted, and taking the pain up front. The team is under pressure and the midfield isn't dealing with it too well right now.  The older guys will get plenty of game time through the long season.

Kuyt, Maxi, Bellamy, Carra and Aurelio all have contracts that expire end of this season or next, which won't get renewed and who might get injured badly or even sold before then.  Gerrard has a little longer I think but again might not last that long.

This is the key I believe - we moan about them being on the bench but fail to realise they're all on borrowed time. Any half season we get from them now is a bonus and we're constantly one month from not having any of them on the bench.

So there's a bunch of youngsters [and Adam] to get sorted out and working together within 1 season perhaps and 2 seasons max.
Kenny's used a good selection of games to bleed them despite being put to the sword at Spurs.

The defensive youth are coming along well as is Spearing.  Hendo is mobile, quick and has good feet.  He's being prepped for being a significant midfield presence in 2 years time when he'll be 23.  Carroll's talent is clear but he's only 22 and inexperienced.

This is FSG's strategy, it's a multi year plan.  There's no doubt we'll buy more players and perhaps not such young ones if ours are struggling to settle.  Especially if we get 4th.

But they see us as having a maximum of 2 seasons to have a completely new squad with Downing, Gerrard, Agger, Enrique and Adam as the oldest players.

It's not the worst strategy except when key players like Adam and Hendo have big holes in the their game right now.  The best thing we can do is actually not switch them out, but take our chances to take the pressure off them.

    Bet they would play better.

Like you say, makes it 'interesting' to watch.

  • NotTooXabi

Gerrard nudging the ball for space, on the bounce, dipping volley, the Kop in ecstasy. Not too Xabi personified.

  • Ed

One of the great moments yesterday, if nothing else than to remind us of his potential to be extraordinary.
