Liverpool 1, QPR 0: Making Life Difficult

Liverpool 1: Suarez 47′
QPR 0

Liverpool play well for large spells and endure a late QPR surge to get the result they needed at Anfield, using the one chance they finished to get all three points. The result’s obviously most important, particularly on the heels of the disappointment at Craven Cottage earlier in the week. But it was another performance marked by a frustrating lack of finishing, and ultimately another match in which Liverpool did most of the work for the opposition in making things much more difficult than they needed to be.

As it turned out, there wasn’t a ton of mystery or intrigue in the team sheet Kenny Dalglish selected, with the same back four from the past three league matches resuming normal service, and Jordan Henderson straight-up partnering Charlie Adam in central midfield. The starts for Dirk Kuyt and Maxi were expected, as the former linked up top with Luis Suarez and the former took up the left flank with Stewart Downing, back in the side after sitting for most of the match against Fulham, on the right.

Liverpool spent much of the opening on the front foot without really creating anything dangerous; a slight knock to Maxi interrupted the forward flow for the hosts, which included a flurry of corners that led to nothing after a couple of blocked efforts. The pick of the early chances fell to Luis Suarez, who stood alone in the QPR box and headed Stewart Downing’s cross straight at Radek Cerny.

adamswpThat was the first real action for third-choice QPR goalkeeper, and as we all predicted prior to the match, he’d go on to make a number of sparkling saves. Maxi, Kuyt, and Suarez linked up with increasing frequency—Kuyt played in Suarez on the right to no avial, then Maxi played in Suarez on the left, and finally Suarez sliced one across the face of goal that skipped past both Kuyt and Maxi at the far post. More fluid, and prettier to watch, but the same old lack of finishing marked each of Liverpool’s attacks.

The only other clear cut chance of the half fell to Maxi, who was played in wonderfully by Kuyt. The Argentine was one-on-one with Cerny and tried to curl it past him, but the Czech keeper did well to react and tip it wide. A chipped effort from Luis Suarez ten minutes later was also saved by Cerny, rounding off the host’s chances in a first half that proved fruitless despite a number of shots and two fair shots for penalties.

Thankfully the second half proved to be different enough almost immediately, with Luis Suarez getting the winner within two minutes. A quick Liverpool corner was cleared away, but Charlie Adam was able to maintain possession on the left flank. Rather than continuing forward, the midfielder cut back to his right foot and delivered an arrowed cross to Suarez, who, for the second time in the match, found himself alone in the middle of the QPR penalty area. This time he made no mistake, nodding past Cerny and getting his first league goal since the derby win at Everton.

The hope was that this was the first of many on the day—that one would open the floodgates, and Liverpool would purge their wasteful tendencies once and for all. But as has so often been the case, the rest of the match was marked by spurned chances (and paranormal goalkeeping by Cerny on Maxi) and an opposing side that sensed an opportunity to get back into the match. The introduction of DJ Campbell gave the guests the impetus, pressing higher up the pitch and causing concern at the back for the hosts. Liverpool’s stern defense never broke, though, as QPR huffed and puffed but never created any clear chances to draw level.

*

It always feels petty to make any sort of serious complaints with a win, and with Liverpool’s inability to do just that this season, especially at home, piles on the guilt. So I’ll refrain from any prolonged bitching and just say that while there were many encouraging signs on the day, and the three points is all that matters, I still expect more from Liverpool—lack of finishing is the most blatant offense, but there were large spells in which Liverpool looked passive and lacking in urgency.

suarezmiss That’s really the only collective worries, and there were some sparkling individual performances on the day that deserve more of our attention. Charlie Adam was the standout in midfield, showing tremendous growth from the player that most of us wanted benched during the early part of the season. He was more patient and composed, and showed tremendous positional sense as the deeper-lying of the central midfield duo. His delivery from set-pieces was less than spectacular, but the rest of his game was impressive enough to overshadow those struggles. And while he wasn’t quite as good as Adam, Jordan Henderson again shined in a more central role, playing box-to-box and working his socks off.

Pairings at the front and back were similarly effective, with Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger continuing their stout defensive form in the middle and anchoring an increasingly stingy defense. Maxi and Luis Suarez were the most effective link up front, with Kuyt playing the occasional foil and Stewart Downing producing one of his more positive displays of the season. Kuyt’s inconsistencies were evident, though, likely a product of rust and irregular match action. The South American pairing were clearly the best, though, playing one-two’s more than a few times and giving Liverpool two of the best looks at goal, even if they both spurned good goal-scoring opportunities.

As I said, there’s little to nitpick about both as a squad and for the personnel involved—I think we’d all like to see Liverpool be more dominant and finish the chances they manage to create, and until that’s the case they’re always going to come under criticism. And when points are lost, it’s more easily justified. But on days like today, when they struggle and frustrate and get the win anyway, I’m not in a mood to spend much time lamenting what could have been, when what actually happened was enough for a deserved victory.

Need goals, it just seems that every keeper coming to Anfield these days has the best game of his life. Our luck will hopefully change as the season goes on. It has been a while since we turned over a team by more than 4 goals...

  • ejbauer11

    Stoke!!!! Fuck spurs.

  • Latortillablanca

now all we need is for chelsea to lose... and then for that scenario to repeat itself at least a couple more times...

  • jpr

And Arsenal to get hammered by City on Dec 18th. If we win the next 3 games, we will prob be in 4th.

  • Ryan

its quiet around these parts....clasico much?

  • Ed

Yeah, a little more quiet than usual. Sort of a white bread performance from Liverpool plus a few ready-made distractions can do that.

  • Ryan

It must be a warm feeling to have 30 comments be "more quiet than usual". I wouldn't write my own blog in fear of being one of those blogs with 2 real comments and 2 pieces of spam.

  • Ed

Can't really complain, since this is sort of a I like Liverpool and drinking beer and being a smart ass type situation.

  • jpr

Poor poor Mourinho. He should have dropped into Europa comp. with Fergie so he could win something this year. It might be two years in a row with winning nothing. His head may explode. (Kings cup doesn't count).

  • Ryan

I'm kinda glad; I don't really take sides in the clasico affair, but I kinda like seeing Real Madrid loose, because their fans are incredibly annoying. Ronaldo is annoying. Pepe is annoying. The only player with dignity is like.......Xabi Alonso.

  • Latortillablanca

casillas is a stand up guy as well, but ya, they don't call em 'madridistas hijos de putas' for nothing...

  • jpr

It's not right Pep not shaking Mourinho's hand after the game. Considering what he does to him for 90 minutes during the game, he should have to kiss him on the lips before the game.

  • We are still not finishing. We were so laidback after the goal. A good team would have knocked us off. We really need to finish the chances we get.

  • PDubz18

It's not good teams that I worry about...we don't seem to have much trouble against them.

  • True, but its not a rule that we will dominate all big matches too. If we dont dominate and still are presented with  a chance we wont finish that too. Look at ManU, why do you think they are at the top? Cz no matter how bad they play they finish their chances even if that means 1 or 2 full proof chances in a match, they just win 1-0 somehow or the other, its the points that matter!

I like the banner pic by the way, where'd you grab it from? You gave us the site you use for these banner pics a while ago, but I forgot the name unfortunately.

Can't remember the site Noel uses, but I usually head to zimbio.com or Daylife photos.

would you be able to put up any extended highlights... you know those 12 minutes ones that show all the awesome passing and movie, those wonderful shots on goal, and the yellow cards

I am delighted with a 3 points. But 2 big concerns
    1) Liverpool unable to put in chances.
    2) Liverpool unable to hold up the play, letting opponent to come forward after just a 1 goal lead. Most of the large period of 2nd half, we were on the backfoot. There is at 1 stage I saw the screen flash of "posssession last 5 min" where it is a 12% to 88%, Liverpool : QPR.

Could it be Liverpool knowing that they are unable to score more goal that lead to them to defend after just taking a goal lead?

Often Liverpool found themselve unable to pass the ball out of defend. What went wrong? Our midfielders fail to effectively delivering those off the ball running? Our midfielders unable to hold the ball well? Skill ? We need skillful creative player Silva(ManCity). Lius Suarez creating his own chances most of the time, but his finishing touch deserted him. Though I am Liverpool fan and I love Suarez very much but I found Suarez went to the ground too easy at time.

I wish Liverpool do better next time, on scoring goals. Some said we have a good spell having weaken opponents this moment, but we already beaten by Fulham and won narrowly yesterday. The only consolation is, Newcastle lost yesterday.

    Com'on Liverpool

  • Waiting for Sterling

We all wish we could just go out and buy any player we want; but we can't.

  • mardia

Good to get a win at Anfield. I'd love to see a goalfest for Liverpool, but I'll take the three points and hope we can build on this for the rest of the month, before hopefully getting reinforcements in January. (Along with getting Gerrard back to the first team.)

Also, and I admit I'm just as guilty of this as anyone else, but it's interesting, and REALLY encouraging, that after all their early struggles, both Henderson and Adam have been flourishing as of late. Adam in particular, I had serious concerns about with Lucas out for the season, and it's good to see him stepping up this way. Phew. (It's also nice because, for all their struggles in the beginning, both seem like nice guys who are dedicated to working their tails off for the club, so I personally always felt a little bit bad about groaning every time I saw their names in the starting XI.)

On a broader note, it's good for us to get a win (and for Luis to score) so that for at least this week, the BritPress can SHUT THE HELL UP ALREADY. Their xenophobic bias has been out in full force lately, and it's absolutely disgusting to witness. I'm no conspiracy theorist, but the way SAF and British players like Wayne Rooney get a pass while other (read: foreign) managers and players are vilified is nothing short of an outrage.

  • Latortillablanca

i agree, with the caveat that THIS WAS QPR>>> #keepinurdickinurpantssssss

  • mardia

I agree, it's QPR, but let's face it, these are the sides we struggle with the most. I'm less worried about us facing the Mancs or Chelsea (who we seem to own) than I am about us facing Swansea or Wolves. It's the smaller sides we always seem to struggle against, and earlier in the season, it's the smaller sides where I was most worried about Adam attempting Hollywood balls against, trying the showier, fancier stuff instead of keeping it simple. Not trying to overstate the opponents or the win, but let's be honest: wins have been hard to come by at Anfield these days.

  • Latortillablanca

right, i mean, i dont think we're diverging in opinions when i say that not handling teams we should handle is an issue - right?

  • Waiting for Sterling

Growing up I always got annoyed when I did something that I needed to do and my dad said I could do it better without congratulating me on what I did.  But, I understand now when you know how much better Liverpool can do and they still come up short.

Shout out to Charlie Adam btw.  I'm a fanboy now.

  • Latortillablanca

we jus seem a bit snake bit - somebody slice us and suck the poison out. i nominate sue.  where the fuck is sue?  that's a dynamic that's been missing here...

  • Moevawda

feels like a long time since we won
have liverpool even got a 1-0 win this season?
maxi shows how good he is with his simple yet efficient playing
    downing was a little improved
adam needs to improve his corners

  • Latortillablanca

you know what, all my bitching aside, the 1-0 thing is actually a good point - championships have been won on the foundation of 1-0 wins...

  • Shelbylynn

If we could get a 1-0 win every week for the rest of the season, I'd be the happiest girl in the world. It might be boring but I'd just be happy we were getting the job done. Then maybe next year we could aim higher.

  • Liverbird

    u mean man utd!

  • jpr

United? No. Aunty Fergie  is coming to terms with losing to "lesser" teams 2 - 1 that knock him out of competitions. Crystal Palace and Basel. I think it will be Milwall in the FA cup and Stoke in the Europa league. More scoth Fergiemeister.

  • Latortillablanca

and chelsea, and real madrid, and spain, and greece, etc.
