Liverpool 0, Stoke City 0: Hey Look, Sami Hyypia!

By: Ed | January 14th, 2012

hyypia

We’re not gonna do this. Not right now. Just go read the Blackburn recap. Or the Swansea recap. Or any other match in which Liverpool never really looked like doing something worth watching, subtract any chances that were created but not taken, punch yourself in the face for watching the whole thing, and then go back to drinking yourself into oblivion.

Liverpool matched Stoke in the worst way possible, failed to do anything to threaten the opposition goal, and earned their seventh draw at Anfield. Seventh. At Anfield. I’m all for furthering the hate of Stoke, who had no other result in mind and looked like they were on ice skates any time they tried to get forward. But like the great Dennis Green said, they are who we thought they were. And Liverpool let them off the hook.

Poor marks for Liverpool for being so dire (again), so uninspiring (again), so impotent (again). From top to bottom—aside from very solid showings from Sebastian Coates and Glen Johnson—they weren’t creating anything, and there was little to indicate that they could actually do something about it. Things aren’t getting any better for those who have come under criticism, particularly Stewart Downing, who was abysmal and completely anonymous other than a brief streak and shot in the first half that sailed well over Thomas Sorensen’s goal. After starting so brightly, he’s become a liability and adds little positives to side that’s already self-conscious enough.

I have little interest in doing a breakdown of the match action, mostly because there wasn’t really that much to break down. Couple near-misses for Dirk Kuyt, a few clear penalty shouts that were waved off by the unshakably arrogant Howard Webb, and a tremendous amount of possession on the edge of the Stoke area that was repelled time and again.

Whether it’s a need for additions prior to the end of the month or just finding something that actually clicks on a consistent basis within this squad—which seems unlikely due to Craig Bellamy’s knees, Maxi’s disappearance, Andy Carroll’s infrequent appearances, Luis Suarez’ ban, Downing’s disappointments, Kuyt’s worrying dip in form and effectiveness—it’s plainly obvious that, once again, we find ourselves saying that Liverpool need to be much, much better if there’s going to be real progress.

There’s big matches on the immediate horizon, ones in which it’s probably safe to assume that Liverpool will look like a completely different side than the one we saw today, regardless of the fact that many of the personnel will be the same. And that’s one of the biggest frustrations, and one that we’ve seen the club struggle with for far too long. The importance of the emotional changes around the club can’t be dismissed, and with so many of the other pieces seeming as though they’re in the right place off the pitch, it’s a matter of hoping that at some point in the near future, the football finally catches up.

So it’s shitty for now, and we’ve sort of had to learn to be okay with that. We’ll continue to hope that things get better for good on the pitch, and at some point, that hope’s going to be rewarded. Today, though, it’s just not the case.

is a asshole he don't know what the hell he is doing. 35 mil for corroll absolute disgrace the club should give a refund every match he plays. mil he has no touch all he can do is head the ball and a left foot and the GREAT asshole Dalglish gave 35 mil for him.

  • fastrail

Well tbh I have no idea who control the transfer...it might be comolli so I'm not entirely blaming Kenny. And the football that we played has improved, it is the amount of incompetent players that is making it suck. So unless someone make correct decision about transfers like the one with Enrique and Bellamy, we will not improve.

But seriously laying all the blame on Kenny is just stupid, and it is even stupid to call for his head right now. Changing manager every season isn't gonna change our fortune (*cough Chelsea *cough), and changing manager in the middle of the season will just make things worst imho (bar Hodgson of course).

Well, that's 14 points left on the Anfield turf.

Context for that stat? We'd be TOP by one point. Nice.

Jonnno and Unrealque as our only real wide-threat is to be expected when you play 3 at the back. What is thoroughly unexpected is the lack of atacking support from the 5 players nominally ahead of them.

The shocking truth is that the clever, quick inter-passing we expect under Kenny is almost impossible to replicate with Bellers, Maxi and Luis on the sidelines. And Stewpot, The Lug and a woefully off-form Dirky foraging up top.

That said, Kenny-out types need to have a fucking word with themselves and stay out of my general orbit. Sorry, but that's an imbecilic attitude. Poor Man-kini is being cut all sorts of slack after losing Yaya and Silva for a couple of games. At moneybags Citeh...?! Kenny's missing Suarez and Lucas (and the only straight swop we've got in Jay) and some numbnuts on Cau%$t Of$$*de want his head?! Bore off.

I love this club and it fucking kills me that we aren't top of the league and will likely miss out on top 4. However, when one stops shouting, throwing remotes and ringing talk-radio to have a whinge, one should note that there is a sea-change occurring at LFC.

Sorry knee-jerks and 'gimme-NOW!!'-types. I don't enjoy this and I sure as hell ain't advocating blind faith, but step-back. See the bigger picture. It is seriously unpalatable, but this, my friends, is a building process.

  • poorscouserbobby

Word Trev, word.   the money sir, on the money.  Is it slightly disappointing that we're not top of the league, sure and in the words of the king, that'd be a wee bit romantic wouldn't it?  All good things take time.  We've had some very poor luck.  The woodwork seeming to hate us, Lucas going out for the season for a minor collision, wee jay crocking himself with no one around.  But the ground work has been laid, The back 4 are solid, the midfield is only going to get better, when the pistolero returns he'll have taken a long lay off that honestly he needs,  and we'll be the better for it.  We are coming.   Hell's comin' with us.  We're going to rule the country like we've always done before!

Oh, and I miss big Sami Hyppia.

  • redtrev73

The imperious form of Martin Skrtel has caused me to reflect on Sami of late. Top man, an LFC legend. Love your passion and hope, as always bobby.

It's SO understandable that people are dejected after dropping 14 points at home. Hell, I'm sickened by it. I could easily be done for aggravated asault if I was to find myself in a lift with Chaz or Stewpot. The selection and tactics are sometimes an unpleasant mystey to me. My hero is clearly fallible and this does not please me. But some people need to give the guy until the end of the season and have a bit of respect.

  • poorscouserbobby

If we don't have hope, why bother?

  • I agree RedTrev, but I don't believe the owners will let Kenny continue if he doesn't make the goal of top4 this season. Kenny fits poorly with their management ideals, but was still given the job as he was available immediately and had history with the club.

  • redtrev73

I feel you could be right on this MPS. FSG's mommas didn't raise no fools and Kenny will come under scrutiny but it remains my dearest wish that he leads us to the title

  • deadlydirk_killerkuyt

exactly. rebuilding takes a bit of time. whatever the results we got so far, i still see improvements compared to last season. which is what we wanted for at the start of the season.
lets reserve judgement until the end of the season.

  • redtrev73

Perspective dirky-lad. It's all about perspective. Dropping points and poorly performing expensive signings all add up to high blood pressure and a desire to smash shit for me but Sweet Jeebas, let's acknowledge the loss of important players, the 20-odd woodwork encounters and the fact that performances like yesterday's are ATYPICAL.

  • justin

The whole knee-jerk thing is what Football Manager games do to people all so commonly now.

  • redtrev73

Have to say Justin, I do believe the modern 'fan' has a skewed sense of what it is to run a club and manage a team. As Gally says, some idiots do believe their Xbox prowess leaves them equipped to call someone like Kenny out but as Jonny says below, much of the criticism of yesterdy's performance was warranted.

  • Suarez from the car park...

nothing to do with it.  people get p*ssed because we couldn't put bodies in the box to beat Stoke, and most people did say that Downing, Carroll, Adam, Hendo were not good enough to cause damage.

The tactics weren't terrible, but it had to have midfield bodies in the box to support the one striker/2 strikers.  We have to ask why?

  • Gally

Some sense...yes, what Trev said. I hate not being the finished article and it's good and important to be critical and pissed off. Especially when things are as shitty as they are now. But please, look through the shitstorm of underachievement and media-driven hate and see how much good there is now. Then, if you must, ring Talksport and have a cry about how you are a better manager than kenny...on your Xbox

  • redtrev73

Talksport is bad for your health Gally. And thanks forthe support, it's a little weird out there. For some reason I feel like having KFC..??!

  • Redarmy

This game finally changed my mind.
I think I'm perfectly fine with us not finishing in the top 4.
Look, what happens if we we somehow get in: we spend another 40-50 mill on two or three players who are probably not worth it and we moan about the same things over and over again.
If we don't get UCL money, perhaps we're finally forced to 'BUILD' rather than 'BUY'.
I'm fine with wathing Coates, Sterling, Morgan and others fight it out on Thurdays in not so meaningful EL games - just like Spurs this year.
Perhaps we're finally forced to play Kelly and Shelvey and whatever other promsing young players we have week in week out.

by gosh…what a wimp and flop carroll is..for the ridiclous amount of money he has cost us, i was shaking my head with disbelief after the draw with stoke yesterday…

    1) He steps into the pitch with the wrong boots and keeps slipping and falling..now thats a major no no for professional players..you have to pick the right studs to suit pitch conditions…im sure he had a run out and warm up in the hours before the match to practice his boots on and check suitability..people like sir alex at manure pay that much attention to their players preparations and even suggest the right boots to wear for a particular game..i remember he sold a player who didnt listen to his advice during a game…

    2) Next carrol dosnt look sharp at all..sluggish not decisive…worst part was when he blocked the shots of two liverpool players which were on target….stoke must have been laughing their heads off when he came on..he is only suited to take his pony tail to a pub and become a bartender….

    3) Overall i think we were too defensive in our mindset and thats why we ended up with malodorous draw..no risk no gain…more importantly we need a goal machine quick…splash the cash n save the season…its time to cut our losses with carrol..and the good servant though that kuyt has been for but us he is in decline.he is a classic centre foward and yet he couldnt tuck in an open header with no one marking him..it will make sense to sell and cut our losses with him too…

4)carra was also not sharp yesterday..long lay off perhaps he shouldnt have started..maybe from now he should only play in parcels as a rolling substitute

On the plus side coated played well….not bad for a first start in the BPL…its time jonjo started instead of henderson and downing..they have played well in bits this season but overall im sorry they are generally ineffective..when are we going to put faith in our youth system and bring our young players on??

and i dont agree with replacing kenny..he is the king..he needs time another season probably..we were shittier under hodgson compared to know..at least we are passing the ball around...the only reason we would let kenny go is mourinho came and took over and no one else...thats a personal wet dream..

please please buy a goal machine before the window closes..whatever the price…we need a player like der bomber to come in and tuck in our chances…carrol is such a p***y….YNWA.

  • fastrail

Yes...it is the fact that we spent 35m on that good for nothing Carroll and 20m on another one annoys me, when they contribute nothing at all. And yeah I feel you about Carroll, he seems to easily fall down while he should be our so called big and strong striker. So much for that.

  • Suarez from the car park...

The tactics  needed  midfielders to advance into the box to join the 1 striker.  It just didn't happen, that was the problem.

Instead, KK bought Carroll on but he's no asset right now, and you still need midfielders getting into the box.  Didn't happen.

Carroll simply doesn't have the movement or touch he had last season when he was joint top scorer in the league with Berbatov before his injury.  All his problems stem from that, everything else falls apart, touch, attitude, wisdom, fight etc.

Liverpool are not getting him fit or his movement sharpened up and he'll be a real waste of money if they don't sort that.

The problem is though we had Enrique and Johnson playing most of the game as wide midfielders, Hendo/Adam/Gerrard just didn't do that getting forwards into the box.

Gerrard's the only one who knows how to do it and even he didn't.  Hendo doesn't know where/when to go.

I think you made the point fastrail that losing Leiva takes away the balance in the middle of the pitch being the holder letting the others get forwards while he holds the river back.

Adam has to have his hand held, Hendo never tackles and Gerrard doing it is a waste of his forward movement.

  • brother jon

the most frustrating part for me is that our attackers, these days, seem more concerned about preventing a counter attack than being in position to score a goal. even on set pieces we're as likely to have as many men on the ball as in the box.

and that, i fear, has as much to do with lack of lucas as it does lack of creativity.  without a lockdown cdm, our mids can't/won't commit to the box cause they (rightly) don't trust the other guys to do the job defensively. this is especially true when both 14 and 26 are starting and when 19 gets the nod too?...it's a dull blade to attack with. yes, it'll be different when Stevie and Luis get to play together, but

added to that built-in attacking timidity, post-lucas, is that because charlie or jordan aren't in danger of winning the ball back too often, Andy has to track back way too much for his body type. he does enough work lugging Huths around the box to have to consistently scramble around in our half. even if he knew where to be and what to do (and he has in the past), he'd execute better if he weren't always half a step late.  (and even better if the service was more helpful and less hopeful. more juicy tomato, and less hot potato). not sayin he's aces. and yeah, he's just as likely to sulk about as help out. just sayin that LOL is fucking up his game too. his type need to stay fresh to be sharp. (i think somebody round here mentioned ibra the other day as a possible role-model - i'd settle for Grant Holt.)

sooo when i read that Kenny's saying he's good with who he's got, and no january additions?? he's gotta be talking shit, right? we need: either a cdm that'll 'allow' our current mids to, at least, threaten the goal- a de jong type (or yeah, coates); or, we need attackers that actually can AND DO attack.

missing out on CL next season will make it harder to get in the year after that. and if we miss out because we thought the current parts were gonna finally come good...

  • Parkje04

Gentlemen, we can all agree that the result today was poor.  But let's not lose focus on the real story: how impressively soul-crushing Stoke are to the sport of football.  I mean honestly, we can bemoan the terrible day for LFC - how we had nothing going forward, a continued lack of finishing, and how we have struggled so mightily at home.  But there's an upside here that we all need to look at.  We could all be Stoke fans.

Imagine that?  Imagine being HAPPY after watching that match.  About watching that atrocious 90 minutes of "football" and celebrating?  And I'm not just talking about the result.  Because sure, for a team like Stoke, travelling to Anfield and walking away with a point is a success.  But you have to remember, this is how they play every game.  With the clear goal to make football as uninteresting and uninspiring as possible.  Give them credit, they get results that far outshine their level of talent.  But at what cost?  AT WHAT COST???

The beautiful game was sullied today, but we are the lucky ones.  For next weekend, when we fire up our computers and search the streams, we're not looking for Stoke.  We won't have to watch that garbage next weekend.  Sure, LFC could shit the bed again.  But it's still better than clicking on a link, hoping for a 0-0 draw.

THAT is what I take solace in today.

  • deadlydirk_killerkuyt

pretty sure a hint of smile made its way across my face after reading that.
    just a hint.

  • GalahadThreepwood

Once again a weaker side comes to Anfield, concedes most of the possession to us, parks the bus and dares us to find a way to break them down.  And once again, we fail to do anything with our dominance.  This is the story of our season so far, and it's an ugly one.

I want to be patient, I really do.  I understand that this is a work in progress, Rome wasn't built in a day, greater things are coming, etc., etc., etc.  But it's frustrating to see a squad that had so much promise make a hash of its opportunities again and again and again.  We should be comfortably holding one of the Champions League places right now, not limping along in 6th place and struggling to get wins against teams that have no business on the same pitch with us.

I think Kenny has to come in for some blame for where we are now.  He brought in Downing, who started well but has tailed off severely in the last couple of months, and Adam, who's been exactly what Noel warned us about in the offseason.  I'm pretty sure he also had some significant input in the decision to sign Carroll, who may become a great striker someday but is clearly a long-term project at this point and doesn't deserve a regular place in the starting 11.  Those selections have hurt our chances, as have his on-again, off-again tactics, and his odd insistence on starting the same lineup game in, game out, regardless of performance, opponent, etc.

That being said, I don't think Kenny should leave after this season (although if Rafa wanted to come back, I would definitely consider it), but some real changes need to be made, and soon, if we want to get back into contention for the Champions League.  I think we need to move Downing, Adam, and Carroll to the bench for the time being.  I would also like to see us move for a young striker to complement Suarez when he returns, and a holding midfielder to back up Lucas.  It would be great to see Bellamy and Maxi start more games, too.  I'm still too much of a tactical novice to suggest changes in formation, but clearly we need to make some adjustments there as well.

Obviously those are not the only options available, but I think we need to do something now, before the opportunity to make top 4 disappears completely.  We can still make it--Arsenal and Chelsea are vulnerable, and Spurs are starting to come back to Earth--but not without some major changes and much better execution.  I hope it happens, because I love this club to death, and want it to succeed more than anything.

  • fastrail

say what u want about benitez but truth is,out of the 7 matches we drew at anfield,he wouldve won 4 atleast.
the team seems to have gotten worse compared to when kenny first took over.last season we easily beat stoke at home
as much as all liv fans love and respect kenny, with the vast money hes been given,if he doesnt get us into the top4 this season,he should be sacked, plain and simple

  • brother jon

at the risk of contributing to (another) rafa review...
one of the things i think of when he comes up is that season (09-10?) when we limply claimed 12 draws. i also think of istanbul, mind, but he has directed a few snooze-fests in his time too.

as for CL or bust for Kenny - i think plain and simple is best left for lubricant. our claiming top 4 was always a can-do for this year, not a should-do. demanding top 4 after two transfer windows is VERY high standard.

    GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!

  • purify_the_body

Well, I had the game on delay and just finished watching it. When I saw us come out with 5 at the back I immediately said "0-0" and that's how it turned out. I didn't see why Agger being injured meant we had to bring in 2 CBs to replace him and handicap our own side at home. Our lineup was designed for 100% defense and bringing on a 2nd striker for 30 mins wasn't enough because we took off another attacker to bring him on.

Right now it does not look like Dalglish is very interested in that 4th spot. To play 5 defenders at home when our problem is getting goals is very negative and doesn't bring us any closer to solving our scoring problem. Clearly none of Gerrard, Henderson, or Adam were instructed to get forward into the box and we were toothless. The reality is we are now so afraid of Stoke that we are playing 5 defenders at home. Not good.

  • Suarez from the car park...

enrique and johnson played a lot of the game in the other half which they could do ok.
The problem wasn't defenders, it was no midfielders getting in the box to support the striker.

  • Khaine

I get the frustration, but some of the comments here right now are borderline histrionic.

Excluding the Spurs game, no side has dominated us. Convert a few penalties and see some of those off the post efforts in the back of the net and we're deep in the CL spots, and looking well worth it. A toothless (offensive) effort against a huge physical side that has caused us trouble at Anfield ever since they were promoted, parking the bus inside their own box isn't changing that.

We're lacking the cutting edge creativity needed to unlock tight, organized defenses satisfied to play for the one point (think we've done pretty well, really, clinicality and luck being qualities I've missed more), but the players lacking that creative spark have still made league leaders, reigning champions and champions league sides alike look decidedly average.

I'd say we're one or two deft signings and a well earned rub of the green away from being a fairly awesome side. Not guaranteed we'll get that, but we're definitely not in anywhere near as bad a shape as the comments right now make us out to be.

Downing has still been shit though.

  • purify_the_body

"No side has dominated us"...well, whoopee f***ing doo. We'll be in 7th place again in 24 hours. That's not the Liverpool standard and you know it.

And don't start with that "rub of the green" bull**** either. We've scored 24 goals in 21 games and luck has nothing to do with it. We have the worst attack in decades and it's because our attacking players suck.

  • Khaine

Whether it's "Liverpool standard" or "good enough for Liverpool" or whatever other vague phrase you'd like to assign doesn't really matter. It's reality. This club has not won the league in 21 years. Placed 7th and 6th in the past two seasons. European football recently has been wet nights in Bucharest and Urziceni. A certain tempering of expectations might be practical unless you enjoy drunkenly screaming and cursing at strangers on the internet two nights a week. Our goal should be to get back to that standard, but given the situation for the past couple of years (yeah, remember H&G?, that was our standard only 18 months ago), it was never going to happen overnight. Long term thinking and reasoned decision making is the only way we're ever going to get back to that level.
Our attacking players are so shit we're top 4 in chance creation on the season. 24 goals, 18 hit posts. Luck has NOTHING to do with it? That's not a reasoned argument, it's blind ranting. Also, I'd prefer if you didn't curse at me.

  • tony

Man, luck avarages out for everybody. Statistically you get your breaks. But bad luck for 5 months? And you don't think skill was a problem. I don't see other teams whining about missed chances like we do here.  If you care to watch a few Spurs matches, perhaps you will realize what missed chances are like. They led Bolton by one goal at the half where the broadcaster said it could have been 7-0....and they didn't count those open nets where Adebayor and Dafoe had wished their feet were a couple of inches longer.

  • Khaine

Meh, the luck evens out sentiment is completely void of substance though, there's no data to back that up. If it proves true, we'll be knocking out five-nil wins by the dozen before season's end (in which case I'd love for you to be right).

Spurs have been sneaking wins and points in even matches though (look no further than last week), we haven't, all year.

Spurs get goals from a range of forward players and midfielders.

We don't get goals from Hendo, Adam, Carroll, Downing, Kuyt, only a few from Maxi, Gerrard, Suarez.

    There is your problem.

  • Khaine

Spurs have 10 goal scorers this season, 7 of which are forward players, we have 9, 7 of which are forward players...

  • purify_the_body

You're right, all 11 of our players slipped on a banana peel today, so the ball didn't go in. Otherwise, we would have definitely scored.

  • Khaine

Sarcasm. My favourite way to reasonably argue also (see, we can all play).

  • fastrail

Glad someone is on the same page as me. Dominating and all is good but it's worthless if you're not killing the game. I've said this again and again and I'm gonna say it again, it's not just this game, it had been like this for lots of games. I could be settled if it was a game or two where we dominated but haven't got the result. But it has been this way for lots of games this season, and that comes at Anfield. No excuses to that. Don't keep making excuses to cover our mediocrity. We are not a low standard club to be satisfied with such a result.

  • Khaine

No, this game wasn't representative of our season at all, bar the lack of goals. We usually dominate possession AND create chances aplenty, today we were only able to do the former. With regards to the "standard" comment, I'll refer you to my comment above.

  • Luis Suarez dentist

I'm glad that someone else still thinks that been in sixth with a chance of scraping top 4 is not good enough for Liverpool.

We are in trouble because we have let go of Mereilles, Torres and Aquaman and brought in Carroll, Henderson, Adam and Downing.

  • Zach

Was about to just write somethingn along those lines altho I think you put it much better that I would. The gist is that Kenny is still the man and you cannot lay all the blame at his feet. I'm not saying he's perfect but some players have not been performing, I'm sure he wasn't counting on missing lucas, having suarez suspended and hitting the bloody woodwork 79 times. However there are other coaches and trainers with Kenny too annd they're all having an input. The players just need to step it up and the fans, altho frustrated, must keep a clear head and stay behind the team now cause that's what were to do. Otherwise jog on over to manchester or Madrid for all I care. Also, I know everyone bloody misses Meireles but half the time he was here we had Hodgson and if 30 people say they miss Meireles in the comments each week it's not going to make him come back so they can shut it.

Anyways I agree with you Khaine that we've been set close for success and that a signing or two could have us making the goals rain and scaring other teams right off the field. So props to you for staying reasonable and I'm with you. Stay true lads, YNWA

  • purify_the_body

Kenny is the manager, isn't he? So who is supposed to get the blame if not him?

I am not calling for his head, but to suggest the manager is not responsible for the results is absurd.

  • Zach

I'm not calling for no blame for Kenny but he should'nt be slain.

  • Ed

Agree that it's not end of days stuff, and I'm not on board with any sort of "Dalglish out now" type of talk. But expressing frustration is fine with me, especially when so often any sort of criticism is brushed away as someone just not "believing enough" or other head under the rug stuff like that.

  • Khaine

I'm all for criticism, preferably of the measured, accurate and constructive kind. Mostly lots of shouting here today, which is fine, but not very useful.

  • Ed

Unless it's shouting for more liquor. Then it's very useful.

  • fastrail

Well, I hope mine was useful. No? :P

  • Khaine

    The best shouting onsite ;)

  • fastrail

Aww damn it. Now I looked like a villain lol.

  • fastrail

    Edit: accidentally clicked this..shit lol

  • fastrail

You can't blame them (or me) cause we'd expect something more after spending almost 100m for players.

I'm not going to be a douchebag here, just want to clarify some things. No side had dominated us, yes because they expect that and after a few months even the shittest of manager (okay that was too much) knew if they let us dominate and park the bus we won't be able to break them. Yes luck still plays a part in that (most notably the fucking crossbar moment) but we can't just rely on luck on getting our team anywhere. Lack of creativity? I wonder whose fault is that. Lack of clinicality? Still wondering the same.

And you do have a point on Stoke making some good team look average but we are at home, and it's not just this game. That's why it's frustrating.

Spot on about Downing. You're missing Adam and Carroll though. I do hope I'm proven wrong and they instead turn out to be like Lucas. But so far they're not showing that on the pitch. Sorry.

And sorry if any of you supporters feel angry towards me about many of my negative comments. But truly, I had been like you guys before. I had decided to stick with the team no matter how badly we performed before. Hell, I was even mad to people who are being negative like me now (*cough LSD *cough). But if we even want to go forward, a performance like this is not acceptable. Remember, we are Liverpool. Not just some club who'll settle for a draw at home.

  • Reds

I totally agree with you ...

  • Khaine

Yeah, we struggle to break them down, and lack that creativity of a Silva, Mata, Modric, Hazard, fuckit even Luis Garcia. But there's a limit to how many players like that you can have in a balanced side, which is why I say we're one or two players away. I think that's a fairly accurate assessment.

Is your wondering producing any answers? Love to hear.

Yeah, expectations as a result of our finally having funds are unavoidable. How big steps can we take in a single transfer window though? Our squad situation a year ago was pretty horrific. Fighting for 4th was always going to be our goal this year (people were talking about the league, again, making all of us sound deluded) and just because we're not front runners in that particular competition (which is stiffer than ever btw) right now, doesn't mean we can't get there, and the squad has shown enough promise to make me think it's still a very real possibility.

  • fastrail

About the funds, we could have taken a big step if that was managed wisely, which I think it didn't (my opinion anyway).

Which brings me to the wondering, if we had bring in proper players for that kind of role (creativity and finishing) and we should have with the amount of funds given, we would be better than we are right now. I'm not sure who, but people who managed the transfer was who I meant (KK?Comolli?not sure).

Which brings me to your first point, we lack that creativity as you said, and are one or two players away from it, but that could have been solved 6 months ago, which we didn't, due to poorly managed transfers. And it seems like we are not getting any players this window either (I know KK works behind the scene, but his conference suggest that he's happy with the squad he has, and seems likely that he won't sign anyone this time around, I do hope I'm wrong).

And yes, I do understand your point about us being close to the fight for top 4, but it's frustrating when we had the chance to close the gap we didn't, and it's not easy to get those chances (I mean it's not easy to see Chelsea and Arsenal losing or drawing with lower sides) while we are the one who seem to be blowing our chances with these kind of draws.

Well your optimism do gave me some hopes though, that we could still nick the 4th place in the end, but yeah as you said we need one or two signings who can bring this team, but not just another overrated footballer who cost 20m for nothing.

  • Khaine

    These are great points.

The Carroll transfer I don't really like discussing, due to the amount of variables that dictated that fee. I think he was always an odd fit for Liverpool though, regardless of the fee. He'd looked great in the Newcastle shirt though, and availability of proven strikers was always going to be an issue on January 31st.

Hendo for 16 to add depth and potential to our central midfield, I agree with. I liked this transfer in July and I still do.

Adam was cheap, I think the number of quality creative players available at that price is next to nil. Gerrard's injuries means we've had to rely on Charlie a lot more than most had probably hoped too. Neither loving nor hating this transfer. He shows enough to make me hope he can provide us with what we need, and then does something preposterous that makes me want to punch his children's faces (shot from 50 yards today anyone?).

Bellamy, free? Excellent piece of business.

Enrique? Best left back in the league for under 6 mill is fantastic shopping.

Coates is another one in the Hendo class for me. The management decided we needed center half depth and potential rather than overpriced starters (although we did go pretty hard for Phil Jones) and he fits the bill perfectly, having been dominant at every level he's ever played, including the senior international level. The defensive performances so far this season proves Kenny right as well, as we have a fantastically solid back four at the moment.

Which brings me to the big flop. Downing has been horribly weak. At 19 mill, he represents (so far, at least) a tremendous waste of money. I wish wish wish Noel's analysis pre-season (stats over perceptions and all) will come true, but I'm just not seeing it. These funds could, and should, definitely have been allocated elsewhere.

To finish this impromptu transfer policy analysis on a positive note, Suarez is on this list as well. Not much need to comment on that.

This topic is really big though and this post is running too fucking long. I'll try to wrap it up.

Looking at the list above, a huge 19 million hit in place of Stewart Downing and everything looks a lot brighter to me. There are factors at work here though, like the fact that maybe the exodus of international players and our well-documented struggles both on and off the pitch may contribute to us not being able to attract the absolute top level of players right now, new-found funds or no. Sadly, I don't really have a solution for that, other than perform better and get back in the CL, looking smashing in red. There's definitely room for a discussion about transfer policy on board level though. It may need to be reassessed.

    Fucking Iliad. Sorry.

  • Suarez from the car park...

The CHAD transfers are always going to cause a problem in the blogs given the price paid.

I'm annoyed that we didn't seem capable of putting players in the box alongside the one striker, and I don't know why that was the case.

Just where did Kenny think the goals were going to come from with one guy in the box against Stoke's back 4?

Adam was complemented in the media for putting balls through and presumably he is supposed to allow others to go forwards and support attack, but it didn't work.

  • Khaine

I agree, the support from midfield yesterday, particularly considering our 3-back line and how deep Stoke were, was embarrassingly conservative.

  • Luis Suarez dentist

Bloody hell does that make me a psycic because I saw this coming!  ;)

  • fastrail

What? Me being like you? lol

  • Luis Suarez dentist

    lol"!

  • fastrail

Well, I turned like this when you said something like we are Liverpool so this kind of performance and/or players is not acceptable here. And I thought for a second that you did have a point, hoping for something to be better when it is clearly not is not going to get us anywhere. People needs reality check sometimes.

  • fastrail

Some people are calling for Kenny's head. TBH I don't know how to answer to that. It's 50-50 to me. It might be too soon to call for Kenny's head right now, seeing what he had achieve last season. But yeah he did make some dodgy signings, some dodgy tactics, and some dodgy calls with the substitution. And yes I'm being slightly biased here as I really respect him. But honestly he needs to correct thing now, and QUICKLY or it might turn ugly.

Like the owner said, not getting into the Champions League this season will be considered a failure, and honestly , like LSD said we are looking nowhere like a team worthy of Champions League slot. Yes our defence are fantastic and all, but it's worth nothing if we can't score.

  • Very_Angry_Brand

I respect KD too, But he is just not good enough to lead LFC to top4 spot. hmm...some ppl said give them some time...but hey ! we just left 17 matches to go, do you think we have enough time? honestly, I don't think so If KD don't wake up and still maintaining his dodgy tactics !
