Top 50 Premiership Players?
By: ed_ | December 29th, 2007The guys over at The Score have come up with their list of 50 top players in the EPL right now.
Can’t really argue with too many off them, although I’d like to see Torres a little higher come the end of the season – he’s been great, but he can be better.
Also, apologies on the lack of posts over the holiday period. I’m enjoying some down time in the mountains and finding an internet connection is just about the last thing on my mind.
The list, in full, after the break – discussion in the comments!
50. Patrice Evra (Left back, Man Utd)
49. Benjani (Striker, Portsmouth)
48. Steve Finnan (Full back, Liverpool)
47. Yakubu (Striker, Everton)
46. Ashley Young (Winger, Aston Villa)
45. Jolean Lescott (Defender, Everton)
44. David Bentley (Winger, Blackburn)
43. Tomas Rosicky (Midfielder, Arsenal)
42. Olof Mellberg (Defender, Aston Villa)
41. Marcus Hahnemann (Goalkeeper, Reading)
40. Tim Cahill (Midfielder, Everton)
39. Owen Hargreaves (Midfielder, Man Utd)
38. Martin Petrov (Winger, Man City)
37. Ryan Giggs (Midfielder, Man Utd)
36. Obafemi Martins (Striker, Newcastle)
35. Edwin Van der Sar (Goalkeeper, Man Utd)
34. George Boateng (Midfielder, Middlesbrough)
33. Joe Cole (Midfielder, Chelsea)
32. Micah Richards (Defender, Man City)
31. Richard Dunne (Centre Half, Man City)
30. Gabby Agbonlahor (Forward, Aston Villa)
29. Ricardo Carvalho (Centre Half, Chelsea)
28. Gael Clichy (Left back, Arsenal)
27. Javier Mascherano (Midfielder, Liverpool)
26. William Gallas (Centre Half, Arsenal)
25. Emmanuel Adebayor (Striker, Arsenal)
24. Jamie Carragher (Centre Half, Liverpool)
23. Gareth Barry (Midfielder, Aston Villa)
22. Nicholas Anelka (Striker, Bolton)
21. Elano (Forward, Man City)
20. Shay Given (Goalkeeper, Newcastle)
19. Robbie Keane (Striker, Tottenham)
18. Xabi Alonso (Midfielder, Liverpool)
17. Alex Hleb (Midfielder, Arsenal) – This is my biggest gripe. Hleb shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near the top 30, let alone rated above Xabi Alonso. He’s been better this season but that doesn’t say a lot considering some of his displays last year were worse that inept.
16. Petr Cech (Goalkeeper, Chelsea)
15. Carlos Tevez (Forward, Man Utd)
14. Dimitar Berbatov (Striker, Tottenham)
13. John Terry (Centre Half, Chelsea)
12. Rio Ferdinand (Centre Half, Man Utd)
11. Mikel Arteta (Midfielder, Everton)
10. Fernando Torres (Striker, Liverpool)
9. Wayne Rooney (Striker, Man Utd)
8. Kolo Toure (Centre Half, Arsenal)
7. Frank Lampard (Midfielder, Chelsea)
6. Nemanja Vidic (Centre Half, Man Utd)
5. Michael Essien (Midfielder, Chelsea)
4. Cesc Fabregas (Midfielder, Arsenal)
3. Steven Gerrard (Midfielder, Liverpool)
2. Didier Drogba (Striker, Chelsea)
1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Forward, Man Utd)

I think Tevez is better than Rooney.

The list is crap.
Hargreaves made the top 50 and he’s barely been playing this season. Rooney’s within the top 10, and he scores a goal.. never.
Fabregas is behind Gerrard.. does that make sense?
Elano is not within the top 10, and he’s been saving Man City’s ass ALL season.
Torres should be higher… the man averages a nearly a goal a game.
This list is moot.

Eirik – Rooney WAS on a tear this season before his latest foot ailment.

All these lists are crap. It’s a bunch of guys sitting in a break room pulling names out of their asses. As 50 people, you’ll get 50 different lists.

santa cruz inconsistent? He’s scored 10 in the league so far…

Rooney is the only one that really sticks out as wrong to me. He’s done nothing to earn a top ten placing, not even a top 50. And Shay Given is the second-best Prem keeper right now? a-Whaa? I’m not even a Liverpool fan, and I think Reina gets a pretty serious shaft here. If he’s on any list BELOW Cech, Given, Van der Sar and Hahnemann, I must be watching a different league than whoever made this list.

Why no Sol?
Why no Distin?

Adebayor belongs in the Top 5. And this is coming from a Man Utd fan.
Gerrard at 3 is a joke.Posted from

evra, bentley, Adebayor, rooney & tevez should be much higher. lampard is most over rated player in the premiership. gerrard should swap with fabregas.

i really think that torres should make number two. he’s been a threat to every opponent’s defence and adapted very well to english style of football.

cmon guys im sure that not one of you could publish a list that wouldnt be met with a page full of criticisms. I think the list is good because it combines an even balance of stars from the big four clubs with extremely effective players from the lower clubs like elano, cahill and arteta etc. It’s hard to criticise the rankings because thats his opinion and they dont appear to have any bias towards certain clubs.

look in my opinon the only correct call u mad is that C.Ronaldo is at no.1 , with the form he is in i wont be surprise to see him get uefa player of the year!! he is a class act with increbile enthusiasm on the ball! he isn’t even at his peak yet!
