Fernando Torres passes his medical
By: Brian | July 3rd, 2007El Nino cut his holiday short so he could come to Liverpool today for a medical. At least that shows he is eager to join us. The Is will be dotted and Ts will be crossed tomorrow and then he’ll be formally introduced as a member of the club.
Am I the only one who isn’t excited about this signing? I’m gonna have to pull myself together and set myself straight before I expound on Fernando. Right now is just not a good time, Luis Garcia leaving is still affecting me.

I made this same move a long time ago on Football Manager 2005 (after a bidding war with Chelsea), and so I’m happy Rafa finally caught up.

I still think that we could have done better with such a big transfer fee. In something like 30 million we could have had David Villa if we would have tried a little harder. I am not convinced that Torres is Villa class. And it’s still not sunk in that Luis Garcia is leaving. How could we give kick him away so easily? It doesn’t make sense. He’s done the job for us in big matches(think of FA Cup semi-final vs. Chelski) and yet we discard him. On top of that we’ve lost another competent winger.
I just hope that Torres doesn’t find the pressure on him too hot to handle. I’ve faith in Rafa and hopefully he has seen things that we can’t.
Lastly, Luis it was a pleasure watching in the Red Jersey and ‘YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE.’Posted from

To answer the above question, Torres ended up being an absolute scoring machine… I set him up with Morientes and Swedish forward Mikael Dahlberg and rotated them. Worked like a charm for some reason. I think I probably had set up a candidate for oddest striker situation known to man.

Let’s hope he rediscovers his form from two years ago, because this past year he was singularly unimpressive, with many of his goals coming from penalties. Definitely not worth the 30m – but then aren’t transfer fees always inflated these days.

One big signing like torres wnt buy a premiership.Im a scouser throughout, being part of the liverpool academy id love to c the premiership back in the anfield trophy cabinet.Year after year there is hype that its liverpools year, maybe this is their year.Chelsea is finished, lampard is unsettled, mourinho has his balls crushed by that russian gay boy abramovich, and a few players have left. Its up 2 united and lpool.I hate 2 say it but man utd are all class.Only 1 way 2 win a title and thats for rafa the gaffa to offload cisse and bellamy, then we have kuyt, crouchy and torres up front. We have a gun of a midfield in xabi, pennant, and stevie g.All rafa has to do is buy 1 top defender like heinze and then were in for a real chance. If torres is as good of a buy as berbatov, then sir alex can kiss rooneys ass and send the title back to merseyside.

A few things to remember…
1. Atletico was not a good team at all this year
2. The only strikers in La Liga that have had a better goalscoring record than Torres over the last 4 years are Villa and Eto’o, who both play in far, far, far superior teams.
3. He’s 23 years old. He’s still got a lot of room to grow.
4. Villa wasn’t going anywhere. Certainly not to us. Same with Eto’o.I can’t see any reason not to be excited about this.

Inara, I think the transfer fee and contract are about right. If he makes £100k a week, he’ll end up costing about £56m over 6 years. If you consider Ballack, Sheva, and Veron, he’s a steal just on age and potential alone.
Kewell 7, Chelsea did all the right things this offseason. I’ll write more about that later this month when I make my EPL predictions, but I’m not worried about Man U.
Andrew, all good points. It amazes me that a team with Maxi Rodriguez, Costinha, Maniche, Martin Petrov, and El Nino did so poorly last season. No Europe at all, ridiculous. I think Rafa did the best he could in Spain, I just wish Tevez would come on too.
