Anfield Banter: Ricardo Quaresma, Shunsuke Nakamura, Craig Bellamy, Peter Crouch, Robbie Fowler, Harry Kewell, Peter Beardsley, & Steve McManaman
By: Brian | July 5th, 2007* Apparently a bid for FC Porto’s wonder winger Ricardo Quaresma was rejected, but it was insinuated that a slight raise of the offer might be accepted. The initial offer was for £13.5m and it is believed that a bid of £15m would be sufficient. If you’ve never seen Quaresma play, you’re missing out on one of the most talented young football players in the world. He tends to score some amazing benders of the outside of his foot. Hopefully signing Torres will sway players like Quaresma to come on board.
* Gordon Strachan is adamant about keeping Nakamura in a Celtic kit. I think he’s quite erroneous in comparing the Henry situation to Nakamura’s though. First off, Shunsuke is only 10 months younger than Henry. If the Japanese midfielder was 24, than I would concur, but he’s not. Also, if he wants to test the waters in a more competitive league, he’s going to have to do it now, before he gets too old. TH14 has nothing to lose or gain by going to La Liga, Nakamura doesn’t have that luxury. So to put it in my perspective, in order of potential left winger we could acquire, it would go like this:
1. Quaresma – Young, talented, fun to watch, great player and honestly only a great season away from being at the ‘World Class’ level. He’s that good.
2. Mort Gamst Pedersen – EPL experience, reliable, good player, not sure if Blackburn would sell him though
3. Shunsuke Nakamura – The SPL and Celtic are about as close to EPL style as a team and league can get, so I think he would adapt easily and quickly
4. Yossi Benayoun – Like Nakamura & Quaresma, he’s very versatile and can play anywhere in the midfield. Also his EPL experience is a definite plus, not to mention he’s also not half bad and will be the least expensive fee
5. Florent Malouda – prefers Chelsea, which means we don’t want him
6. Simao Sabrosa – experienced, good, though lack of EPL experience and his age scares me a little
7. Mancini – He’s tough enough, good enough, tends to disappear here and there, but overall, is a solid player, not sure if he’s a realistic acquisition
* West Ham looks to be the front runners in the Craig Bellamy sweepstakes, while Rafa has told Peter Crouch that he will not be sold, but will have to fight for a spot. Personally, I’d rather keep Bellamy, but it probably won’t matter with Torres and Voronin coming on I don’t see either Bells nor Crouchy being higher than fourth on the depth chart.
* Cardiff City is going after Robbie Fowler with a ‘unique’ pay package that would make him the highest paid player at the club. I don’t really see God playing in Wales for a Championship side that could have easily been relegated last season, but I guess if the shoe fits.
* King Harry is vowing to give his all next season if Rafa keeps him around. Harry, Harry, Harry, let’s just see that you make it through the summer without injury.
* Finally, two former players made headlines recently. Peter Beardsley, one of the most beloved players ever, helped open a new all-weather pitch at Full Sutton Prison near York. I don’t get it. A ceremony to open an all-weather pitch at a prison? Are you kidding me? In brighter news, Stevie Mac will be joining Birmingham in an advisory role. Expect the players to have better hair next year.

Quaresma would be brilliant…absolutely first-class addition. Signing him would make the Tevez to ManU rumors easier to take.

Man U adding Tevez makes about as much sense as us adding another central midfielder. He and Rooney are basically the same player and I don’t see them coexisting together on the same field, but what do I know? So that rumor doesn’t bother me at all.
If we get Quaresma, it’ll take plastic surgery to get the smile off my face. At least for a day.

Agreed Tevez would be an awkward fit at Man U, I just hate entertaining the possibility of United signing him just because they can.

I’d bet on Nakamura staying this season and then being sold this time next year. I actually think Lawwell and Co. are going to be planning for that eventuality. As I mentioned before, I think a bid of 10 million pounds would be very tempting at the moment, provided Naka doesn’t go public with any displeasure he might have about being in Glasgow to force a move sooner. All indications are that he is happy, and it’d be out of character for him to go public.
I wouldn’t take the Henry reference too literally, I just think he meant that people should get used to speculation on Naka’s future. He’s a valuable commodity that someone will always want to try to take away.
Any idea what kind of wages Bellamy’s on? Would 6 million be his fee?

I don’t see how Man U can, honestly. They are drowning in debt and I can’t fathom how they could get this deal done without something shady going on. If they truly are going to splurge the £25-30m, I’ll be shocked. I’m not sure why he would want to go to a team where he might not even start. Then again, stranger things have happened.
JT, if Naka wants to come to Liverpool, I think this will be his only window of opportunity. We won’t spend £10m for a thirty-year-old winger, no matter how good and fit he is. Bellamy’s valuation has been set at £6m and I’m guessing he makes about £50-60k a week. I would love to see him go back to Celtic and I’m sure he would to. Are you guys interested? Have only heard that West Ham and Blackburn are the frontrunners.

I hope you guys sign Simao, who is more reliable than his Lusitanian counterparts. Quaresma is erratic, self-absorbed, and has shoddy defending. For a team that is famous for its solidarity, he’d be an awkward fit at Liverpool. And he’s only scored six goals this year, which is poor considering that you can’t even accuse him of tracking back to help defensively.
As for Mancini, he’s talented, but he’s been massively overrated since his goal at Lyon. I appreciate his talents, and I know why Roma prices him so high, but why him when Simao is the same price and about the same age?
Granted, Simao is older than Q and just as expensive, but it’s not like he’s on the shelf. He’s consistent and doesn’t disappear in big games.
About Malouda – it’s just a case of neither the club nor the player finding an agreement with each other. Not all players want to play for Liverpool, as hard as it is to believe, and in the same vein, while Benitez might have identified him as an early target, he later must realized that Malouda isn’t what he needs. (I don’t disagree with people when they say that Chelsea is luring him with money, but Lyon was always going to sell to the highest bidder, and Malouda and Drogba have been wanting to play together since they split apart four years ago).

Inara, I agree about Q’s defensive inability, but he’ll have Riise behind him and if we want to go defensive we’ll bring in Aurelio to play there or to push Riise up. We also still have Kewell…
I think this will be the last off-season where we’re linked to Sabrosa and I don’t see it happening. If it does, awesome, if not, oh well. He has said in the past he’d link to join us, but all talk about him has cooled significantly.
We have made it very clear that if you don’t want to come to Liverpool, we’re not going to splash cash in your face to convince you otherwise. Even if Malouda has a turn about in his opinions of LFC, I think that window has been shut.

Brian, I can say that the fan consensus is that we’d love to have Bellamy back, and his name has been swirling around the net, especially in light of Rafa’s comments yesterday. He’d be a great foil for Vennegoor. I think they’d complement each other very well. As for what the brass is thinking, I’m not sure. Strachan and Bellamy were together at Coventry and got along, so who knows?
Now if we could get some of these worthless shits off our squad, maybe Bellamy’s wages wouldn’t be a problem. But it’d still be an issue.
Just for fun, how bout this. Naka for Bellamy + 4 million and we’ll throw in Jarosik for free! We’d play a 4-3-3 w/Bellamy on the right in place of Naka! Hmmmmm.

I think we’d take that deal in a second, though I think we’d probably cut Jarosik as I don’t see him getting off the reserves squad.
I never understood why Rafa didn’t try Bellamy on the right and move Pennant over to the left. JP was quite effective the few times he and Gonzalez switched wings and Bells’ best performance of the year, at Camp Nou, was very winglike.

Quaresma? I was just hearing that he was suppose to be headed out to A. Madrid along with Forlan with the Torres money. Guess I heard wrong. If we got him though, I think I would shit myself. He is such a young amazing talent, they call him the next Ronaldo in Portugal for Christ sakes.

LOL, don’t worry, Malouda won’t. But I have to wonder, do you expect all players that come to Liverpool do so because they love the club? I see this in a lot of fans (especially in MU and Madrid ones, who assume that all players want to play for their club), and to be honest, I think it’s a naive view to take.
Most players out there go to clubs for professional reasons. I know Torres said that he loved Liverpool as a child, and maybe it’s true, but what if he hadn’t, and his decision was motivated by guarantees, not by some childhood ideal? Would you still want him? And is it wise to say that a player has to love a club to play for them? Because it stands to reason that just because someone doesn’t love the club doesn’t mean he can’t grow to love it.
I guess I’m asking because at Lyon, we see the opposite happening. Most players come to Lyon for professional, not emotional, reasons (understandable given that Lyon is a second tier club), but there are some players who grow to love Lyon, like Juninho, Coupet, and Cris, even though they have been offered far more lucrative offers from bigger clubs.
Club want the best players to wear their colors, and they realize that not all of them are there because they dreamed to be but because it suited them at that moment.

No, I definitely don’t think everyone wants to play for Liverpool. A good example is Wayne Rooney, who took his tryout with Liverpool, if you can call it a tryout, as a joke and wore an Everton kit to it. I would like to believe that every player who comes to our club is aware of our history and desires to become part of that history. I would rather have a club full of players who love wearing that kit and representing our team with pride and not be the most talented players in the world. For example, Igor Biscan, would he be a cult legend if he had played anywhere else but Liverpool? Doubt it.
I honestly do believe that Torres is a huge LFC fan. He talks about when he was growing up how he and his friends were all huge Liverpool fans and how most of his close friends have ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ tattoos. They were also the same friends who gave him that now-notorious armband. I don’t think he would have left Atletico if he didn’t want to play for us. He could have joined Man U the past two seasons if he just wanted to win Cups for just anyone.
I think Rafa has just realized over the past year or so that other than the really great players (a la Gerrard, Ronaldinho, John Terry, etc), there really isn’t much difference in talent level and desire is what wins Cups. Wearing a Liverpool kit should go hand in hand in representing your country, in my opinion. Unfortunately, that’s also becoming more of a personal gain issue and less of an honor these days.
