Liverpool complete deal for Degen
By: JRW | May 20th, 2008
Just days after Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard made it known that the team was falling behind in the transfer period, Rafa comes up and nabs his first signing (albeit a free one) of the summer in Borussia Dortmund right back, Philipp Degen.
I’ll be the first to say that I haven’t seen Degen play much of this past year, however I do know that he was part of the 2005-06 Champions League squad for FC Basel that lost in the third round of qualification to Werder Bremen, and that he started 10 games last year for Dortmund. That might be the solid news on him. What I didn’t want to find out was that Dortmund conceded the most goals in the Bundesliga this season (62).
To be honest, I would have rather seen us get into the mix for a certain Brazilian right back that Chelski and the Mancs are chasing, but considering how quiet Hicks and Gillett have been on funds, who knows how much is really in the transfer kitty.
Regardless of my concern, I’ll just say that I’d like to welcome Degen to the squad, and like everyone else, I’ll always back Rafa and his signings until I have the chance to see them on the pitch for myself.

He’s a decent player.
But that’s exactly what he is… DECENT.
Yet another average squad player signed e.g. Pennant, Lucas, Agger, Aurelio.
These aren’t players good enough to be part of a title winning squad. This is another sign that Liverpool just aren’t going to win the league, or even compete.
Players like Degan should be joining Uefa Cup teams for example POMPEY!!!

@ b-man: I totally agree with you, but considering he’s free, I’ll take the risk on him. Like I said in the post, I wish we would have tried for Alves, but who knows if we even have the funds to make a legitimate bid for him. But in the end you’re right, decent doesn’t get it done.

aurelio and agger are NOT squad players - those guys start every game when they are fit. Aurelio has skill, but is made of glass. Agger is a very good player.
I will agree that Pennant is a squad player, as is Vornonin, Crouch, and Benayoun. It’s not really fair to put Lucas in that category as he is only 20. I am not really thrilled by the signing, but at least want to give him a chance to prove himself.

I agree that signings of Degen’s calibre don’t exactly capture the imagination, but we should give him benefit of the doubt. After all, not many of us had heard of Skrtel or Agger before they came to Liverpool and both of them have definitely proven their worth. At least Degen hasn’t got a pony-tail
