Nothing’s Happening, So Watch These Videos

By: Ed | June 24th, 2011

filming I’m greatly appreciative of those who found yesterday’s post worthwhile despite the lack of anything happening that anyone actually cares about—as I mentioned, trying to find news and/or inspiration on a daily basis during the summer months is absolutely maddening, especially when you’re trying to find news that isn’t a rumor that makes you want to stab someone. So yeah, nice to get good feedback on yesterday’s post.

But if there was nothing going on yesterday, today is positively stagnant, with little to look forward to other than Noel mowing people down on Twitter. I could probably put together another rant about Raul Meireles and the idiots that think he should be should, but I’m tired of that and tired of them and we’ve covered that ground plenty. Besides that, the news that Alberto Aquilani’s likely headed back, and that Charlie Adam, his receding hairline, bulging waistline, and dragon-slaying left foot are arriving soon for real, there’s nothing I’m particularly fond of covering.

So, like any good blogger, I’m going to punt and put up lots of moving pictures. Since Noel started the trend a while back, we’ve tried to make a point of including videos along with posts that allow for it, and while none could ever top the break-dancing gorilla from yesterday, I figured now’s as good a time as any to eat up some space with things that don’t require any real work on my part. Never question my commitment.

1) Liverpool-Focused Football Video

There’s actually a really cool Steven Gerrard Greatest Goals Compilation that was just released earlier this week, but the mother-Poulsens that put it together disabled embedding, rendering it useless for the sake of my time-wasting project here. But really that was the impetus for me to post this one, which was essentially one of my gateways into following Liverpool. I watched this video countless times, to the point that I had (and still have) the commentary memorized.

2) Liverpool-Focused Football Video if You’re a Sucker for Transfer Rumors

Nolan Roux is one of the more recent names to be linked with Liverpool—earlier in the week the club put in an offer for the young Frenchman, but then everyone said “just kidding.” The only thing that really came out of the story was that he’d be a not-terrible signing, as he fits the bill of what Liverpool might be looking for up front and could potentially have an impact much sooner than some might think. There was also talk about him looking like Fernando Torres, but I consulted with my wife, who’s a 2007-2010 Fernando Torres Expert, and she expressly denies any similarities.

3) Non-Liverpool-Focused Football Video

The Gold Cup is one of the three international competitions going right now, and while I can’t say that it’s been the most captivating, Saturday’s matchup between the USA and Mexico is one that almost always delivers on some level. Last time they met in a Gold Cup final it delivered on the “complete asskicking” level, with Mexico scoring three goals in ten minutes in the second half and cruising to a 5-0 victory. There’s no interest for Liverpool fans, but it’s football, and it’s bound to be competitive, so you might as well watch. Just have the mute button ready, as there will unfortunately be lots of Eric Wynalda, Alexi Lalas, and Taylor Twellman. If you don’t know who these men are, count yourself lucky.

4) Tripping Balls Music Video

If you’re handling the transfer season like any good supporter (read: copious amounts of hallucinogens), you’ll enjoy the first-ever music video from Explosions in the Sky, an Austin-based instrumental group. They’re one of my favorite bands anyway, and even though I don’t think it’s their best, the new album is excellent. Bonus if you’re already hallucinating and your hands just turned into orchids.

5) Not Quite Break-Dancing Gorilla Good But It’ll Have to Do Random Video

Because you’ve never thought about having your friends chuck you off the roof of a ten-story building, have you?

That Stevie G compilation was one of the reasons that I became a Liverpool fan when I first started to really get into following football. That and there's a lot of Man U fans in America that are kind of douchey in addition to the people that just get jerseys to look cool, who know nothing of the sport by the way, and invariably choose a Man U one because it's probably the most well know club besides Barca.

  • Bgurakan

The Stevie G compilation - goosebumps and some tears - " ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?"

  • Geza

Cool vids, thanks Ed. By the way if you guys are bored today, don't forget that the U21 Euro final is on at 8.45pm CET. It's definitively agame worth watching, not only for the usual Spanish suspects (Mata, Jeffren, Bojan, etc.) but as well for some brillant raw Swiss talent. Watch-out for the likes of Shaqiri, Emeghara and Mehmedi. Shaqiri especially has I think already what it takes to easily make the LFC bench and maybe more.

  • I kind of wanted to hate you for posting that 5-nil trouncing of the Yanks ... but then you followed it with an amazing video from one of my favorite bands.

    You son of a bitch.

    Well done.

  • Ed

I had no idea everyone would take it so hard. From now on I'm all USA, all the time.

But I can't fully endorse anything where someone says "Benny with his jets." Wordplay!

  • matt

alright alright here ed c'mon now.  that 5-0 (while totally fucking humiliating) was played at a Gold Cup where the US sent their B/C team to try out new talent.  the one that counted to go to the Confederation's Cup, in 2007, the US won with their A team.  out of all the non-liverpool related videos out there ya just had to snag the five-nil debacle.

  • Ed

I know, I know, but it's the most recent, and if I committed to going back any further, all of a sudden I'd have to do actual work. Plus it was all in service of railing on Wynalda et al., so it made no difference to me. Many apologies.

  • matt

well everyone enjoys a good bashing of Eric Wynalda, though may I recommend John Harkes as a future target?

also, great smorgasbord of videos and hope you don't mind if i add another music for everyone who trips to trip to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

a final note to liverpool: PLEASE SIGN OR SELL SOMEONE, EVEN A MEMBER FOR THE GROUNDS CREW.  I CAN'T TAKE ANY MORE RUMORS

  • Capgundamgirl

i personally think this one is more catchy, imho.

I hate John Harkes.  He and Alexi Lalas make it unbearable for me to watch the US play.

  • TheTurnAroundKing

Ed, you and Noel are doing a grand job keeping the home fires burning. Not quite a messianistic water in to wine, but not far off. I particularly enjoyed watching our beloved captain smashing them in from 30 yards. People seem quick to forget what an absolute genius that lad is. Only last week i was having a 'discussion' with a fellow red who reckoned he shouldn't even be in the first team. What a fucking joke. Anyway, back to the self-hate fest that is the transfer rumour mill….

  • Ed

Thanks, glad to have you around to share in the self-hate. Think Gerrard's obviously a first-teamer when fully fit and probably even when not, for better or worse. Still as good as they get, but I wonder about how often he can pull off the partially-fit appearances---certainly detrimental to him at this stage of his career, and while they're better with him than without, it's probably time to make sure he's back at full strength.

  • TheTurnAroundKing

Couldn't agree more Ed, after all he is melting http://tomkinstimes.com/2011/0...
As PT and other posters here have said, i wish he'd retire from ingerlund duty, but i can't see it. Anyway, let’s hope a decent rest this summer will see him back to his best in 2011 -12. With the shitness of the hodges tactics, and suspension and injuries under Kenny, it will be like having a brand new world class player.

  • Suarez from the car park...

well, 2-6-2 will be a b*tchin formation.  A rammed midfield you can't slide a cigarette through - we won't concede before December!!  Amazed Allardyce hasn't tried it.

I'm afraid I'm not getting the explosions in the sky thing.  A classic Pink Floyd number just does it for me, makes me feel alive.  Happy you're getting off on it though.  Must go back to playing some more.

Anyone play a weird instrument out there?

  • Dirk Kuyt Industries

Aquilani looks set to return allegedly..

       LS/AC
    AA/SG/RM
         LL

That's tasy front 6. If we grab Clichy, there's width down both flanks. Hendo/Dirk depth. If we just commit to Aquilani, it feels like so much stuff falls into place..

  • Cheekyfellow

Hmmm that's dirty. Though it's imperative we get a left back.

  • poorscouserbobby

Dear Lord in Heaven.  Can I have that swing?

  • kenny

I just saw Explosions In The Sky two months ago in LA. They're amazing live. And Take Care, Take Care, Take Care is my favorite album... In my opinion it's the best... but that's just me...

  • Ed

Postcard from 1952 might be one of my favorites from them, seeing them live in September. Sort of excited.
