Vålerenga 3, Liverpool 3: It’s Only Preseason

By: Noel | August 1st, 2011

liverpool valerenga valarenga
Vålerenga 3 Strand 14′, Ogude 19′, Fellah 94′
Liverpool 4 Carroll 43′, Agger 83′ 88′

A moving ceremony and a Vålerenga side made up of reserves plus three players airlifted in from an affiliated 3rd division club set the stage for an unsurprisingly friendly and low-key start. The pace was hardly frenetic, but Liverpool started strong in possession, playing a lopsided 4222 to start the game before moving to a fairly orthodox 4231 in the second half. Still, it was a game that began like a glorified training session, though one where Liverpool failed to turn their possession into any kind of meaningful attack.

And with Vålerenga soon coming to realise they weren’t facing a side intent on playing like a Premier League juggernaut, the Norwegian club began to grow into the match. It’s only preseason, of course, but it’s hard for opposition to get much weaker than the 218th ranked side in Europe playing their reserves, and with a number of open questions raised by previous poor Liverpool performances this preseason, what transpired was unprofessional at the very best—and a hugely concerning continuation of worrying trends at worst.

Liverpool’s defensive woes began in midfield with Charlie Adam, partnered as he was with Jay Spearing and often barely willing to even jog back in defense. Spearing meanwhile looked out of place trying to operate as the disciplined, deepest-lying midfielder, losing runners and struggling with the urge to wander after the ball. Then there was Glen Johnson, on his first game back at right back, looking tentative and lost on an island while to the inside Jamie Carragher frequently looked a step off the pace.

Or course, it’s only preseason. But it’s not as though preseason exists in a bubble, and especially in defence it seems as though each passing game only further highlights Liverpool’s problems, no matter the personnel or opponent. And all of those concerns were pushed to the fore again when Lars Iver Strand slotted home a low cross to put the hosts up. It was a well worked break, but it existed because Spearing didn’t properly track the goalscorer’s run, Johnson was tentative closing down the wide-man, and then Carragher didn’t step up to cover the player Spearing had lost when there was nobody else in the penalty area for him to worry about. Any of the three making the right decision would have meant no goal.

Even worse, that first was soon followed by a clumsy Adam challenge that gave Fegor Ogude the chance to cooly tuck away a penalty and put Vålerenga up 2-0. It wouldn’t be Adam’s last poor challenge of the day, though at least it would be his only penalty conceded. Together with a series of wild efforts from range and a tendency to dwell on the ball, it was hardly the sort of performance from Liverpool’s new midfielder to convert any remaining doubters, and next to Spearing’s display—positive on the ball but indisciplined off it—it provided yet more proof of just how much Liverpool needs Lucas, the club’s only viable defensive midfielder, to stay fit.

Late in the first, Carroll would finally give Liverpool fans something to cheer about, volleying home from a well worked corner. It appeared as though he may have used his arm to help bring down the cross at the far post, but with how frustrated he has looked at times in the preseason, one expects both he and anybody watching with a rooting interest will eagerly take it. On the other hand, though the aerial delivery to Carroll—especially from a lively Stewart Downing in the first half—was the best it’s been so far, there was an at times worrying insistence on looping crosses into the box at the expensive of passing football, as players sought out Carroll’s head dogmatically. Despite talk of him being more than just a big, lumbering target for headers, it often seems as though when he’s on the pitch those around him become locked into one mode of attack, which wasn’t supposed to be the case six months on from his transfer.

*

The second half saw things head back to where they began: Liverpool possession without a great deal of conviction in the final third. Downing, a bright spot on the right in the first, surprisingly looked less effective on the whole in the second half when he was moved to the left of an attacking three behind the striker. Meanwhile the combination of Adam and Henderson in the middle appeared a work in progress, while on the whole Vålerenga themselves showed little ability to turn their occasionally slick triangles into anything meaningful.

It all seemed set to wind its way to a depressingly sleepy finish after a once again sloppy start. It may have been preseason, but this was something not too far off Liverpool’s best eleven—especially with the growing concerns over Steven Gerrard’s long-term fitness—and it all appeared just a touch apathetic. But Alberto Aquilani coming on with around twenty minutes left would change everything, as the Italian midfielder who by varying reports either wants away or is wanted away made an instant impact. Looking lively from his first touch, a pair of cracking efforts from range were both followed by setting up Daniel Agger goals from corners. And just like that it was 3-2 Liverpool, with everybody reminded of just how good a player Aquilani is.

Which of course now means that his agent will be out in the press talking about his impending move that may or may not in fact be impending. Blame Christian Purlsow’s antics last summer, or blame Aquilani’s agent’s antics this year, but no matter the specifics behind the scenes it’s depressing that a player who has so positively impacted every match he’s been involved in this preseason appears to have an irreparable relationship with the club.

A late screamer would draw Vålerenga level in stoppage time, giving the hosts something tangible to take home with them, and while Liverpool looked a lot better at times in the second—especially after Aquilani came on—it would be hard to look at the performance from start to finish and see a great deal of good in it.

When it comes to the defence, there will be talk of it being preseason, and of Liverpool playing down to an opponent that at least on paper was at a much lower level. And there will be some truth to both of those things. But preseason has hardly been smooth sailing for Liverpool, especially defensively, and it would be foolhardy to expect the club and players to suddenly flip a switch and begin performing like title challengers against Sunderland on the 13th. It’s only the preseason, but it’s getting to the point where the obvious problems that remain unfixed are cause for real concern when it comes to what can be expected once the games do start to matter.

So despite a smattering of good performances, once again Liverpool walks away with a pile of questions, chanting the mantra “It’s only preseason.” Hoping that the problems on display yet again can be cleared up before the start of the Premier League season.

Gotta tell you Ed and Noel, caps-lock-shouty-dalglish-hating-guy is starting to make me think twice about scrolling down past the end of the post lest i get a little sick into my own mouth.

Also, serious negativity ahoy! Yes, Jonno was so rusty you could hear the creaking. This, allied to some uncharacteristically bad positioning by Carra resulted in valerenga's first two goals. Okay, not good. Agger, however was excellent as was Robinson. Charlie Adam can't defend? Well, no shit!! He certainly wants the ball and with Lucas, Kuyt, Downing, Suarez and Carroll in the same 11 you have to be optimistic. With the injuries to Raul, Skrtel and Stevie it is likely that the afore-mentioned front 6 will play against Fat Head Bruce's lot. And shit, I for one, am excited and I think I'm gonna leave that ejector seat button untroubled just yet.

  • ProfAugusteBalls

Robinson didn't look that good to me. He got caught out a couple of times.  Wasn't he responsible for the one-on-one that Reina saved? Okay, so no eject button just yet, but how about one that turns on a bat signal like thingy, but that has a logo of a left and center back on it for John Henry to see over the Boston skyline? Was Johnson injured, why is he playing his first match in August?  And where is Skrtel? Agger is going to have a back spasm in about two weeks and we will need him.Isn't preseason supposed to be the opportunity to get fit and playing in sync? Neither seems to have been accomplished, just a run out of a lot of players that hopefully will be used very sparingly (or not at all hopefully) and another who is on his way to Italy.

  • Gally

Skrtel is crocked and Robinson was impressive given his age and and experience...and the fact that Jamie and Jonson were poor. Tend to agree with redtrev here ( and generally, damn his logic-based positivity! ) but i'm loving your bat-signal/transfer-plea idea for communicating with John Henry!!

  • ProfAugusteBalls

I agree I think that Robinson looks good for his age and I am excited at the up-and-comers getting some experience. But when we are conceding that many goals, perhaps they should have a longer deputization period.  Anyway, we just signed Enrique, so that is good news. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/spo... While I can't say I like kenny (the poster shouting at us with the all caps) he has a point about the Westham's dreadful defending last year. Here's hoping that Mr. Clark is the dominating influence as he worked wonders for us when he first came aboard.

  • Hey, looks like Luis Suarez made The Onion.  Easily the best omen I've seen in two weeks

  • Jake_LFC

I don't see the point in panicking at least until the Sunderland game. "Dirk Kuyt believes Liverpool will be ready to fire
on all cylinders when they face Sunderland in their Barclays Premier
League curtain-raiser – despite some mixed results in pre-season."

  • lfc80uk

At the moment Aqualani seems to be THE only player performing in pre-season. It will be such a shame if he leaves. Depth is one thing, but I would rather have the midfield combination of Meireles and Aqualani than that of Henderson and Adam any day of the week.

  • premblog

Agreed with the general sentiment. Friendlies shouldn't be overanalysed. Results used to not even make the dailies, for example; these days they are moneyspinning exercises, which puts unnecessary pressure on teams which should just be preparing for the season.

However, from a neutral perspective... I think Liverpool's defence was in need of reinforcement last season and it's surprising to me that Dalglish has yet to address it. Scott Dann has been linked; perhaps he'd be a logical successor to Carragher?I don't worry about Liverpool going forward. The likes of Stewart Downing look expensive on the face of it, but Dalglish clearly has a gameplan based around his supply to Carroll (blog on the subject: http://www.premier-league-blog.... I think Arsenal will finally wobble this season, and it'll be between Liverpool and Spurs to take advantage. You're pretty well placed to do so.

  • Jay Wright

One thing not mentioned is that we looked far better defensively in the second half when we moved to a 4231 and had players proactive pressing the ball all over the pitch, rather than falling into banks of 4 and allowing the opposition to walk about with the ball deep in our territory as in the first half.

I think that u were a bit generous with ur assessment of Downing's performance also, but other than that I'm pretty much on side with the round up; not many positives to take from preseason so far, especially when considering that the best performer looks set to leave for such a ridiculously low fee!

  • ProfAugusteBalls

It's preseason for everyone else and the aren't shipping goals.  And one of the excuses? That Lucas is not in the side. Crikey, never thought I would hear that argument... But he has improved and that's what's important. So, Mascherano > Lucas > Spearing.  Fantastic. And Mascherano sits on the Barca bench most of the time. And we want to be world beaters.

I thought the Carroll buy was the "I know he's expensive but we need somebody and he looks the best of the lot and it's January" type of thing. But then came Henderson.
But a week and half away from Sunderland and frankly, I would rather see Maxi in then the latter . And there are reports of Warnock coming back?

  • Deestinct

All I can say is this result is damn disappointing...we can only win 1 game in preseason? Great...

  • GalahadThreepwood

I've been one of those urging patience with our preseason perfromances, but this match has me officially worried. We can't defend & are struggling to keep up with third-class opposition (no offense to Hull, Galatasaray and Valerenga). By contrast, look at how Arsenal played New York on Sunday. That's how a top four team handles lower-level opponents.

We're seeing the early fruits of Kenny's English experiment and right now I'm incredibly nervous. This is starting to look very much like a pattern, and feels unlikely to get better by August 13. I'm still hoping for good things this season, but now that hope is starting to mix with anxiety, and it's an unpleasant feeling.

At least in the words of Billy Bragg, Scousers never buy the Sun.  A
great song I heard on "Democracy Now: The War and Peace Report"(US
public radio) this afternoon, on the ride home.  So hey we got that going for us.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Additionally I risked my employment for about 40 minutes of dross
streaming that meaningless match against the 218th ranked side's
reserves in Europe (I looked it up too after we gave away the 2nd)
Short of meteoric changes inspiring LFC to more than 3-3 to a side
ranked below European monsters such as FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and
Queen of the South FC and perhaps Noel's Sunday 5-a-side squad reserves
leaves me leaving rather timid of predicting a better season than
lasts.  But again suppose it is only a friendly, right?

  • Guest

I hate that I'm saying this, but the signs were apparent in last summer's World Cup and they're only increasingly apparent: Jamie Carragher is over the hill. The man cannot close down on the man with the ball anymore. His pace is only getting worse, and I do feel his confidence on the pitch is now lost. I was expecting some of this last season but he managed fine then. I do think Agger-Skrtel is best CB pairing we can muster right now, but once Agger gets struck by lightning/bitten by a rabid Doberman/swallowed by an octopus/eaten by Stewart Downing after a helicopter crash, then we're probably screwed.

  • etipok

Once again Aquilani showed his class. If we're to have any chance of challenging for honours, surely, he has to be part of the team.

  • bobbiDanger

Not so bad. Many positives. Too much talk about the defense, preseason must be tough because they must back off quite a bit from the crunchy tackles, yeah? Everybody is running and the peppy forward attack minded players have more fun, wouldn't you think? All in all I think we saw some good in most of the players, Charlie Adam doesn't look nearly as bad as all that. Good run out and no home games, makes it more difficult, agree? At least Poulsen didn't play so no one can blame him for those first 2 goals...ouch : )

  • kenny

DALGLISH IS A CLUELESS MORON WHO HAS TO GO!!!!!15 goals conceded in 5 games.Steve clarke has given up on his job of organising the defence. If Hodgson was performing like this we would be on the cusp of revolution. But King Kenny cannot be criticised. We have never replaced mascherano-WHEN DID YOU EVER SEE ANY OF OUR FULLBACKS LEFT ONE ON ONE WHEN MASCHERANO PLAYED?Spearing trys hard-but no brain.Lucas is a very good player but he is no mascherano.Downing is left footed so why isnt he on our left wing spreading the opposition defenders as wide as possible and  discouraging opposition wingers from attacking our own full backs. The minute downing plays on the right cuts in move breaks down, johnson is left one on one against the other teams winger.BOB PAISLEY always said keep it simple.INSTEAD OF DISMISSING ME AS A TROLL JUST EXAMINE EACH OF THESE 15 GOALS AND THEN COME BACK TO ME.WE CAN FIX THIS BUT EVERYONE MUST FACE UP TO THESE PROBLEMS.

  • CSD

    Troll.

    /dismissed

  • Bill Shankly

NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO SPEAK ABOUT KING KENNY LIKE THAT !

SO RESPECT THE  KING OR GET OUT OF LIVERPOOL OFFSIDE......!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • kenny

Do you remember the horriffic defending that got west ham relegated last season?Game after game they conceded endless goals and looked as if they could concede every minute.Thank god the man who coached them so well at defending never moved to coach liverpools defenders. Its such a relief.Imagine if the man whose name is Kevin Keen was now coaching our defending in these 5 pre season games.Id expect us to have conceded 3 a game minimum.HOLD ON EVERYONE-last seasons good coach steve clarke has moved up to assistant manager and our new coach is wait for it............K.E.V.E.N. K.E.E.N.-you couldnt make it up!!!!!!!!hired by EMPEROR KENNY.

I'm not sure most people here hold Dalglish up to some infallible gold standard.  He gets criticism when it's due.  So does the team.

If he churns out dross during the season the way Hodgson churned out dross, he'll come in for the same response from fans.  If Kenny insists on incessant hoofing, throws players under the bus, consistently sets mediocre targets, or proposes to purchase Carlton Cole, he will have fans calling for his head.  Though since most of that hasn't happened, he's safe - not just because his name is Kenny Dalglish and there's a song with his name in it about some fields, and a road, and a highway somewhere out to the side...
I guess you don't qualify as a troll anymore since you have been posting of late.  Paragraphs and sentence spacing would help though.  And recognition that our modern keyboard contains some keys that just aren't as widely used as others - caps lock being one of them.

  • Purify

Not too surprising today. For example:

    - Carroll does only one thing well: powerful attempts at goal. Everything else he's low level and he has very little guile or technique. The number of poor touches between him and Kuyt is shocking.
    - Without Kuyt or Lucas to cover him, Johnson is easily exposed.
    - With Carroll, Kuyt, Spearing, Adam, and Henderson all playing at once, we are very very slow.
    - Many players haven't developed chemistry yet (at least this can improve). When we broke, they consistently looked confused where to pass next.
    - Henderson makes good runs forward from midfield thru the back line of the defense, but is otherwise anonymous.
    - Adam is not a great defender.
    - Shelvey is improving all the time.
    - Suarez is a fantastic player.

Yes, I mentioned Suarez...because he's amazing and every time he's absent we look awful. :)

  • Mike

Suarez Lucas Miereles....keep buying english...and I'll keep hoping these guys come back soon.

  • Rexy_27

Three 20mil midfielders played tonight, Downing, Henderson and Aquilani, and we're trying to sell the one who best justified the price tag at a discounted price?

  • Jake_LFC

There are only two options, since I refuse to believe Kenny and Clarke et al aren't seeing what we're seeing:

    a) Aqua really doesn't want to be here.
    b) The reports are completely false.

I honestly can't imagine any other scenario.

  • I have to relunctantly agree with option "A" and think that perhaps he just doesnt want to be here. I would be a bit disappointed to see him go, i think he has a lot to offer, with evidence being the last 10-15 games of the season before he was sent on loan and the contributions he's made in friendly's,though i dont put too much faith in friendly performances.

  • Ravenilli

I would go with B as Liverpool as a club this summer have let nothing outside the doors of the club when it comes to buying or selling players. Although I think everyone would like to see a bit more selling done eg Cole Polsen etc etc. Can't believe that KK would be thinking of letting Agua man go as I do believe he is a great player.

  • Couldn't agree more there, I feel like I'm really missing something with regards to Aquilani. There just doesnt seem to be too much of a movement for him to stay at the club and no outcry when offers are made, for example there was hardly indignat outcry with the Fourintina offer.

  • Red2death

    Dear Sir,

In your article you made mention of a mysterious switch which, when flipped, would cause Liverpool to begin performing like title challengers against Sunderland on the 13th.Where may I find this legendary object?  I would very much like to seek it out.

  • Guest

    He said there wasnt one

  • CheekyFellow

    Well, damn.

  • Mr Clueless

any chance of them "internet terrorists" rising up to spear head an "Aquaman plz stay" campaign?

  • Suarez from the car park...

missed the first half because you displayed the KO as 1800GMT  rather than BST.  doh! Clearly didn't miss much though.

Well, to sum up, Kenny's changing Rafa's team of talented mainly foreign players to English players.  And it's far from convincing.  Adam needs to seriously get a grip and stop charging into players from behind.  Aquaman coming on showed what a classy mf looks like.  Surely we can't get rid of him now.  Adam will be at least 6 months improving his game.

Downing's ok, but is there really an end product?  He's quick and more of a winger than we've had in a long time, but I can't help thinking Nzogbia is a better player.

Spearing needs to get those hollywood passes out of his game.  Sure Carra won't change at this point but they need to be cut out.

Henderson didn't impress particularly.  it's not easy to see why we paid a lot for him and at this stage except that he's seen as a right midfielder with a cross.

Defenders were out of sorts aswell which is definitely a fitness thing.

Just as well our 1st team didn't play Gala, that would have been depressing.

  • Ed

Apologies on the time screw-up, I'm particularly absent-minded when it comes to numbers, using numbers, using numbers with time zones, and using numbers to try to understand different time zones.

  • FalloniusMaximus

I've tried to remain calm through these recent spat of friendlies, but I think it is ok to hit the panic button now. With the exception of a few potential starters that was a very strong LFC 11 against a Norwegian reserve side rounded out with players from ANOTHER TEAM. Shipped three goals...were losing 2-0 at one point....yikes. Very, very worried.
