Weekly POLL: England’s Midfield Problem
By: CSD | October 8th, 2008It’s no secret that Gerrard and Lampard have some difficulty coexisting in the central midfield position on the England squad. Ok, it’s actually a f*cking disaster. Josh Burt at The Spoiler ran a poll asking if the Fab one should play the two together. He worded it, however, from the angle that Lampard was the obvious choice and that Gerrard should be left on the bench. It’s okay to have that opinion, after all, drugs are a hard habit to kick.
Personally, I’ve written quite the opposite saying that Lampard should be left out all together so that Gerrard can partner with Villan, Gareth Barry. So now, internet people, what do you think?

I say leave out Gerrard altogether so that he’s rested and uninjured for Liverpool games. To hell with England, nobody cares about them anyway.

‘To hell with England. Nobody cares abou them anyway’…Well, apart from several hundred million supporters, I guess not, no. Really, if you support Liverpool and are foreign, thats no problem, I am in the same position, but have some respect for the country the club is from, and especially the capitan who plays for both…
Also, I think that Gerrard and Lampard should be played together. It’s only a physcological thing stopping them working well together. I really believe no bullshit Capello is the guy to make them work together. If he succeeds, we could see a beautiful work of two artists, maybe like Iniesta and Xavi. Barry is good, but I would prefer two world-class players in my team.

Why doesn’t England play a 4-5-1 with Gerrard and Lampard attacking and Barry holding. Its not like they have more than 1 good striker anyway…

If we look at this completely from a rational point of view, then it should be Gerrard making way for Lampard at the mo.
Firstly, Lampard was part of the Croatia turnaround, and if he’s dropped after such an impressive win, it seems pretty harsh.
Lampard has been on brilliant form this season as well, he’s looked great. Gerrard has also been good, but more on and off due to injury.
Lampard links up better with Rooney. Gerrard’s strength is the fact he can drop a 50 yard pass on a 50p. That’s great, but we don’t have good arial threat – Rooney is crap in the air, Defoe is too short, and Crouch isn’t even that great in the air. Gerrard used to link up a treat with Owen, but Lampard links up better with Rooney for me.
I still hold the opinion that a strong manager could get them to play together. Sven couldn’t because he pandered to them a bit, and McClaren was shite. If a manager made Gerrard stick to being the holding midfielder, and Lampard stuck to playing Att Mid, they should play together fine.
Sorry that I was Long.

this poll only proves one thing: people love gerrard and hate lampard, regardless of the current circumstance. gerrard has only recently returned to fitness, while lampard has been fit and in phenomenal form for chelsea (and england) in the past months. lampard averages 20+ goals a season in the premiership and gerrard averages 8. now, gerrard is AMAZING and scores some incredible goals – I’m not discounting his heroics. but most of you who voted are discounting lampard’s. I say a fifth option should be implemented – play lampard in the center and gerrard on the left. gerrard has proven himself to be more than proficient on the wings in a 4-4-2 formation, he’d contribute to the team in that position.

What do you expect from a poll on the Liverpool blog? 8-P

francesco, you’re right, I am not from England. Furthermore, if you talk to anyone from Liverpool (I have), most consider themselves Scouse first and English a far distant second.

Lampard scores a good portion of his goals from deflections & penalties ..
Gerrard scores un-rivaled crackers that would beat a brick wall ..
the choice should be obvious ..Posted from
