The Legendary Tommy Smith Agrees With Me, So the Rest of You Are Wrong

The man, the myth, the legend, someone who’s actually won trophies has struck out at Benitez with harsh criticism. I took some flack yesterday when I said that Rafa had not put a serious team out against Barnsley. Here’s one person who happens to agree with that.

In the programme for yesterday’s game Benitez said cup competitions are always dangerous if you think you can beat teams easily. So why on earth didn’t he put a strong team out against Barnsley?

At the end of the day Bill Shankly used to tell us you’re only as good as your last result. How on earth does Benitez think he’s going to win stuff if he puts a second-class team out?

Because Liverpool’s squad is not as strong as I think he thought at the beginning of the season. I don’t think he’s even got a strong first XI. How could he leave (Jose) Reina, (Steven) Gerrard and (Javier) Mascherano out?

The first person you put on the team-sheet is Gerrard. How on earth could he sit on the bench for 75 minutes and watch that…then he (Benitez) talks about chances. Well, they’ve gone. You can’t score after the game finishes.

You’re only as good as your last result. Remember that next time when any of you start to say what great players we have. They’re only great if they play great, otherwise, they’re just names on a roster. I agree that we have talent, but after seeing the last match, it’s painfully obvious that they’re being terribly mismanaged.

  Benitez paid the price for not paying Barnsley enough respect!!! Simple really and he got what he deserved.

  I am so happy liverpool lost. this is karma for pulling your shenanigans against clubs like luton town. they ask for money to save their club which is about to go under which amounts to pennies for liverpool, liverpool denies it, and then gets LUCKY to pull a draw at luton town. I can’t stand liverpool and I am so glad they’ve being put in their place by smaller clubs and in the premiership.

  i really don’t think anybody can say the team out there was “second class”.
  true, they played like rubbish, as we have been playing for most of this season

  but anybody would expect a team containing:

  1. the israeli national captain
  2. brazilian under-23 captain
  3. (not so long ago) dutch international striker
  4. england international striker
  5. alonso, integral part of our “world-class” midfield
  6. the “next thierry henry” (so says van basten)

  to not beat barnsley? (with all due respect to them)

  there is something very wrong with our players right now
  be it belief, desire, or whatever
  we need someone to come in and instill a winning mentality

  i agree with the guy from Singapore .. we’re absolute pants! if our “second team” can’t beat a league one side, with all the internationals out there, we’re in some dire straits (money for nothing?) ..
