Harry (not so) Kewell
By: Brian | June 8th, 2007Take a wild guess how many games King Harry has played for Liverpool in the last calendar year? You can count them on your hand. Hell, a chicken can count it on it’s foot. It’s three. And not a single one of those matches was he on the pitch for even half the match. In fact, if you add up all the total minutes he’s played, give or take about six minutes for injury time, he’s played about 77 minutes. 77 f’n minutes! Here is a guy who gets paid a base salary of £40,000 a week plus image fees. You read that right by the way, image fees. His agent pulled a rabbit out of his ass on that one because instead of getting the normal performance bonuses, he gets a little extra every time the club uses his likeness. Well, actually, he probably shot himself on the foot on that one since most people forgot what he looks like this past season.
You might be wondering why I’m getting so worked up about this, so let’s take a trip back in time to May 13 of last year. It’s the FA Cup Final and Kewell is in the starting line-up, but gets injured shortly after the half and has to be taken out. It turns out he had a torn groin muscle. No problem, he has the summer off to heal, he’ll be back, fit and ready for the start of the EPL season, right? No. What does he do? He decides that he wants to play for Australia in the World Cup.
Representing your country on the world’s biggest stage is admirable, but doing so at risk of re-aggravating an injury and chancing that you won’t be able to return to your team that pays your salary, puts food on your table, and assures your children a bright future is just selfish. So what do you think the 77 minute man decides to do for this summer’s upcoming Asian Cup? You got it, he’s going to play for Australia, his country. Ugh.
This is ridiculous. If he gets hurt again, there’s no way we’ll be able to transfer him, if that’s the plan. Of course, if he stays healthy and plays great, it could pay off, not that I want him gone. I hope they made him sign a contract that said if he gets injured and is unable to play at least 50% of our games next season, he not only loses his contract, but he also has to pay us back a prorated sum for the amount of time he missed last season, all but those 77 unforgettable minutes. I love Harry Kewell and was glad to have him back late in the season last year, but come on, at some point he’s got to say to himself, ‘Hey, self, club football pays the bills and I’m not going to be able to play forever.’ I guess he could come to the MLS in a couple of years and make a fast buck, that’s if he’ll still be able to walk. Not to mention his wife can further her ‘acting’ career here.

I’ve read lots of vicious opinions on Harry Kewell. I realise that Liverpool fans are frustrated by Harry’s injuries. However, I’m sure that Harry himself is twice as frustrated. I’m quite sure that Harry has not gotten injured on purpose and would not choose the fate that’s been bestowed upon him. I’m really sick of hearing him put down and bagged for getting injured. I seriously don’t understand why he deserves this. I think, maybe, that instead of fans worrying so much about how it affects them, that maybe they should instead have some empathy for a fantastic player that has had an absolute horror run of bad luck in relation to injuries - something that has totally overtaken all the positives that Harry Kewell has bought to our beautiful game. As an Aussie and Liverpool fan, he is one of my favourite footballers. I am a Harry Kewell supporter, regardless of anything else and will remain a supporter regardless of what fate has in store for him. I can’t wait to see him back on the football field. For those that want to be vicious and attack him, you obviously do so from a position of ignorance sitting on the sidelines, and are happy to do this. I will never understand this negative, blame mentality. As a supporter, I’m a supporter through the good and bad! Go Harry!

Kewell plays for Australia he gets bagged.. Gerrard doesnt play for England but fronts up for Liverpool and he gets bagged. Its a Lose/Lose situation, elite sportsmen will always cop criticism by us envious fans.
I hope he comes back and sticks it to the knockers, He is clearly one of the most talented players around. Put the ball at his feet and magic happens, Stick Kewell on the left and Liverpool become a far more dangerous outfit.

Liverpool obviously aren’t looking after him. when he plays for Australia he is wrapped in cotton wool anyway. when he gets injured he comes back to oz and our doctors fix him up. The critics will be shown how good he is when he gets back playing. hopefully liverpool will look after him from now on

Rafa wake up to yourself !!…your team is hitting the ground fast ! Bring on Kewell..let him spark things up and create opportunities for your so called big name strikers !…(oh and tell Gerrad to go on a long holiday, then come back when he’s feeling like he doesnt need to be a hero at every game !) Harry is your answer Rafa. Stop procrastinating and show some faith in a legend of the game.

Well, when Kewell signed for us, I was way excited. He looked like a bargain at 5 mill, the way he had played at times for both Leeds & Oz. However, he has spent way too long injured, & frustratingly, these injuries occur after representing his country. It seems like he prioritises Australia over Liverpool, much like Michael Owen did England I might add, which is his perogative, & some people, ie Aussies, will applaud. However, you Aussies must then understand why us English Liverpool fans have had enough of him & have lost patience.
Personally, I’m very disappointed with how this has panned out, but its time to admit a mistake was made, & nobody will be upset when he leaves Anfield next summer.Posted from

I wish people would get their facts right before they make statements, saying that Harry’s injuries occur after representing his country. Harry’s latest injury came from a pre-season game for Liverpool. He went into the World Cup for Australia with injuries sustained during games playing for Liverpool. It was this groin injury (as well as the foot injury from the World Cup) that kept him from playing for Liverpool for so long. I don’t know of too many injuries that Harry has actually sustained while playing for Australia. Harry has, on occasion, chosen club over his country (which as a Liverpool and Socceroo supporter, I can live with). I wish the Harry basher’s who support Liverpool would get their facts right. Obviously Rafa doesn’t blame Harry and Australia, so why should the supporters! (maybe because Rafa has his fact right!!!!)

i am really giving up on liverpool. after living in england for 2 years i reallised that most liverpool fans are frikkin wingers. they cut the throat of anyone who has a bad run and then pretends to be florence nightinggale when there is a turn around oferring bandages and tlc for any wounds caused by their thoughtless two edged sword toungues.. every one of you wuold play for your country given a chance. and considering how much turmoil and pain has gone into getting australia where they are now especially with our players scattered over the globe. brian you are a tosser. an ignorant tosser. harry kewell has done more for football than you can imagine. you are so jealous you dont make 40,ooo pounds a week.

brian brian brian!!!!!! oh how right you were. harry is finished, washed up even. The walking wounded. its amazing how much of an influence a cripple can have on the most important game of this year. two assists and liverpool are through to the knockouts. imagine how good he could be if he was healthy…

I am so fucking excited !..Harry you are a legend man. Harry is back and so so Kool !! What a performance against OM to make the knockout phase. Have you guys noticed that since Kewell started first team appearences again, even as a substitute, liverpool have looked more of a threat. Gone are the days of mere draws and lucky 1 goal advantages. Linking Kewell with either Torres or Crouch, and taking Babel out of that left wing position, has changed Liverpool into a winning side with massive winning margins. Go Kewell !! What would be really Kool though for him would be to now score on of those famous long-range Harry Kewell goals we have seen him score in the past for both Liverpool and Leeds..that would cement him another contract for certain ..so up your Brian !

Kewell has been a class act. But has it not got tiring as people still keep picking on Australians wanting to represent their country? All the mentioned tournaments are big, major, important tournaments; and they are not like the African Nations cup which goes for a month DURING the EPL season. Now if the Liverpool captain or Terry were to represent their country not many would dare question them… so why the double standards?
By the way Liverpool got Kewell for a bargain price which they ripped off Leeds for… we all remember the investigations and all; and his talents were probably not best suited to the Liverpool style; so all in all there is not a huge case to complain about.
Its not like he intentionally went out to injure himself.Posted from

Im a Liverpool fan and a fken proud Aussie, i love Harry and i think the sun shines outta his butt. But i hate seeing “fans” especially Liverpool fans bag Kewell.
The guy was gold when he was at Leeds, he turned down bigger money from the Mancs to play for the team he loves, but maybe he should have signed for Man U, I’m sure they would have protected their investment better than Liverpool have done.
Maybe if Liverpool had treated his injuries properly in the first place Kewell would still be shredding teams. Now when he gets injured wheres he go? Back to Australia bc the doctors here know what the F*CK theyre doing here.
I hope Liverpool release him to another EPL team and he comes back to bite you all in the ass for having no faith.

yeah I agree Me myself and yep I. I now want Harry to leave and score many goals against Benitez and the unfaithful LFC supporters. (i’ll still be a LFC supporter), but if Harry joins another team and scores against LFC I’ll be more then pleased for Harry. Maybe this is the only way Harry can get back to full fitness form and then maybe back to LFC…by leaving and getting games. For the record….Rafa…you suck !
