Benayoun on board
By: Brian | July 10th, 2007It looks as if it’s official. Yossi Benayoun is now a member of the Liverpool Football Club. If he’s beaten out Ryan Babel as the second signing of the off-season has yet to be determined, but it appears so.
I think he’s a great pick up. He’s creative, versatile, and has proven he can take the beatings of the Premiership doing so the last two seasons at West Ham. What kind of playing time he’ll get though might be less up to him and more up to the performances and health of his competition in the midfield.
The Hammers primarily used him on the right, but I doubt he’ll be able to take that spot from Jermaine Pennant. JP was dazzling at times last year and put in a good performance in Liverpool’s opening pre-season match with Wrexham. On the left, if all goes as planned, Kewell and Ryan Babel will be splitting time. Though Benayoun has a chance to play at that spot, the competition will be fierce as King Harry will try to redeem himself of two years in the physio room and Babel will looking to prove his transfer worth. Save unforeseen consequences which would put Gerrard and Alonso out, chances of him playing in the middle are scarce.
In regards to injury, he might become invaluable, but it’s pretty certain that he’ll get plenty of pitch time if he can carry the team past the early stages of domestic cups. Whatever happens, at least now we have added depth and quality to our side.

I think Benayoun is a good move. Not the most spectacular player, but as long as we’re picking up good players in other positions (and it looks as though we finally are this season) Yossi’ll be a great utility player for us.

I’ve always admired Benayoun — I reckon he’s a very good, cheap pick for you guys. He must be chuffed about the move. Of course the minute wears all red, I’ll have to hate him!

That article says three things:
1.) If he were to come here, he would ONLY play Striker. No left winger. So now what? If we do get him, and don’t sell Crouchy, we are looking at having 5 strikers fighting for 2 positions (possibly more with Idizaj (sp) and others being urged by Rafa to make runs at the First Squad).
2.) 13 and half million for this guy? Who would probably not get any playing time if the only striker thing is adamant? No freaking way, let’s pony up 17 Million for Quaresma instead, or maybe even less for Simao, two guys who will actually play Left Winger for us.
3.) He doesn’t sound too excited about playing for Liverpool anyway. I thought our big thing this summer was to only get players who actually dream of playing at Liverpool.
Yossi on the other hand is an amazing signing. When I heard rumors of 7 or 8 million for him, I said no way, but 4 million is just perfect for a guy that can play anywhere in the midfield.

I don’t think Quaresma wants to leave FC Porto.

Brian, he’ll play where Rafa wants him too or he won’t be coming. He’ll play on the wing, how far up is yet to be determined, if not, we won’t sign him.
