Babel due in Liverpool tomorrow for medical

If reports are correct, Ryan Babel will be in Liverpool tomorrow for a medical. Wow, that was fast. Apparently the 20-year-old striker/left winger has expressed strong interest in joining LFC. Surprisingly, it appears Ajax will be letting him go for the £6.75m initial offer with performance clauses increasing the deal to upwards of £10m. Babel’s agent has said that no contract terms have been reached, but shouldn’t be that large of a hurdle.

I’m pretty blown away right now to tell you the truth. I actually thought this was some sort of leverage maneuver and not a serious bid, but apparently not. Hopefully we’ll lock this kid down to a long term deal as well and not have any more issues on the left or up front for a long, long time. If and when this becomes official, I wonder what’ll happen with Harry Kewell?

i’ve read reports about how great this kid is supposed to be, potentially. but someone who can barely score 8 goals and make 2 assists a season doesn’t sound all that fantastic to me

true, he’s only 20 yrs old. but look at michael owen when he was 20…

Well, raist, I don’t think we’re bringing him in to score goals, we’re bringing him in to play left wing and not necessarily immediately. I think we’ll keep Kewell around for next season to break the kid in slowly, but the year after he’ll be our starter.

yea maybe we are not bringing him in to score goals, but 2 assists? (both coming in european games, not a single assist in the league for the 3 seasons he was at ajax) i do hope he comes good, though.

having said that, i saw a pretty heartening clip of him on youtube (yes, it’s not exactly a great source. but hey, i wasn’t impressed by Cisse’s clip on youtube. not at all… this guy is an improvement…)

    still, i’d prefer quaresma anyday
now that is a great player.

Well, it looks like he was predominantly used as a forward/striker for Ajax, so the lack of assists are understandable. Who knows, maybe we’re going to use this kid as a forward?

I agree that I’d rather have Quaresma for the left, but I don’t think he really wants to come here. At least Babel has the desire to come and has three years on Q.

I think we still might be in talks for Sabrosa though.

Very sneaky of Rafa to get Babel right under Wenger’s nose…

    He’s a quality signing.

I still think its a positive step, maybe not “top notch”, but a move in the right direction, and seriously if 1/4 of the young talent we’ve signed this offseason turn out to be first team quality we’re going to be amazing in a few years. (granted 1/4 success rate is asking for a lot, but 1/8 still…)

Either Arsenal is going after Robinho or something is going on behind the scenes financially with the club or maybe Wenger doesn’t think Babel’s worth it. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

i was pretty keen on simao a couple years back when we were first linked with him before benfica backed out cos their fans protested or something

but isn’t he kinda old now

i’m glad we didn’t get malouda because at 27, he’s never going to improve much, if at all

23 is a great age (personally i prefer slightly younger even), so Quaresma may be just what we need

Babel is even younger so maybe he does have a lot of room for improvement. the stats on wikipedia show that he plays 25 to 29 games in the league for ajax and only scores 8 and makes 0 assists

the thing is, does he play from the start or are most of the appearances as subs? if he really plays mainly in the first eleven and that’s all he can do, you must admit it’s kinda rubbish, whether as a forward, or as a winger…

babel is very potential player..we just can’t compare him with owen or other young players..he got his own talent.I can see that.
I think rafa won’t put him as a striker..as he said “what we need now is a winger” .. and now he found BAbel.
    He’ll be good signing.

Babel is a Right signing,go on reds,we have him at least 9 years.1 year to improve and the rest to have impact,do not forget he’ll be under Master tactician(rafa).see what he’s done to pennant,he’s Quality!welcome babel.

rafa needed 2 wingers, another good option is Quaresma, then no one will be able to stop reds.this season we are champs or second with 80plus pts.

At Babels age and with the current talent he already posseses i think he would be a great signing for us long term.

I think some1 messed up on the stats cause giving assists is all he does. (Look at some reruns of the EC u-21 to see what i mean) Furthermore i dont think he is what the Reds need since he is NOT a goalgetter. Plus for his sake I wouldnt join the Reds if I was him since he has to compete with 6 or 7 other guys for 2 spots. Torres will play so thats 1 spot taken already….

The problem with stats like assists is most European leagues give crap all about them. It’s a very American stat that honestly has little merit. I mean, you could make three passes the whole game and all three may be to a guy that scores, but the rest of the game you could throw away the ball everytime. It has little meaning and is even less important than say, passing accuracy, but that’s getting even more complicated.
